    Session TwoCreating a Revolved component : Bottle Stopper

    .

    Learning objectives:

    By the end of this session you should:

    Be aware of:

    revolved features and how they can be used to create 3D components.

    Understand:

    how to mange your Pro/ENGINEER files

    the concept behind creating features based on internal sketches inPro/ENGINEER.

    Be able to:

    use Pro/ENGINEER to create revolved features using internal sketches.

    use sketching and editing tools to create valid profiles suitable for revolving.

    Use the Dashboard to control revolved 3D features

    1.0 Setting the Working Directory

    Your first task is to set a new workingdirectory - left click on File menu and leftclick to select Set Working Directory.

    In the Select Working Directory dialoguebox that opens, browse to your own folderwithin the ProENGINEER_TRAININGfolder.

    Left click on the New Directory iconat the top of the dialogue box.

    Create and name the new directory,'Bottle_Stopper'

    Left click everything you nowdesign to do with the bottle stopper will besaved to this location.

    Left click the File menu and select New.

    The New dialogue box will open - left clickPart and create a name for the new part, inthis case 'STOPPER'

    Aim of the session:In this session you will be shown how to usethe sketcher inPro/ENGINEER to draw a 2Dprofile that is then revolved to create a newcomponent the Bottle Stopper shown

    2.0 Selecting the datum plane foryour sketch

    This time, you will be creating an 'internalsketch' which has a number of advantagesoutlined in the introductory notes.

    2.1 Left click the Revolve tool

    In the Dashboard that has appeared at thebottom LH side of the screen, left click onPlacement > left click Define

    2.2 You now need to define the datum planeon which you want to sketch.

    Left click on the Front Datum plane - theSketch dialogue box will open at the top RH

    corner of the screen.

    The default settings will be

    Sketch Plane - FrontReference Plane - Right

    Left click on Sketch to accept these

    The Front plane will re-orientate to fill thescreen and is now ready for you to sketchon.

    3.0 Creating the profile for yourBottle Stopper

    3.1 To create a revolved feature, you onlyneed to draw half of the profile. This is thenrevolved around a straight lineor axis.

    So your first step is to create an axis for therevolution

    On the Sketcher toolbar, left click the

    Centerline tool from the Lineflyout menu.

    Let the cursor snap to the vertical axis lineand left click the left mouse button. A yellowcenterline appears, attached to the cursor.

    Move the cursor to rotate the centerline tocoincide with the axis line; left click to placeit.

    Middle-click to exit the tool.

    3.2 You are now ready to sketch the profileof your stopper design

    Left click on the Circle Tool inthe sketcher tool bar and sketch a circle with

    it's centre on the centreline - some wayabove the Top datum plane - as shown onthe right.

    Left click to finish sketch - middle cljck toexit tool (again - don't worry aboutdimensions at this stage)

    Now double left click on each dimension inturn to create the dimensions as shown inthe sketch on the right.

    3.3 Left click to select the Linetool to complete the profile shown on theright

    Left click to select the Trim tool andremove the part lines part lines to create acomplete 'half' profile for your stopper on theright.

    Middle click to complete - a number ofrandom dimensions will appear

    (Note: Dimensions can be selected andmoved to another position to make themmore easily visible - use left click drag )

    Double left click on each dimension in turnto convert them to the sizes shown below

    Left click to exit sketcher

    3.4 The Revolve dashboard will appear atthe bottom LH side of the screen and themodel

    should have generated to give you a 3Drevolved profile -

    Note that the revolution can be edited in thedashboard - for example to 270 degrees toprovide you with a 'cutaway' sketch

    4.0 Adding the O ring groovesYour final task is to add the grooves for theO rings. To do this you will need to go backand edit the sketch.

    4.1 Left click on the + sign at the side ofthe revolve icon and then right click on thesketch (called S2D0001 by default)

    Left click to select Edit Definition

    The sketch will re-appear.

    Left click to select the Circle tooland sketch two small circles as shown -

    Note: you should notice if you draw thesecond circle carefully, that it snaps at onepoint to be the same size as the first.

    Left click to select the Trim tool anddelete the outer lines until your sketch lookslike the one below.

    Middle click to finish sketching - randomdimensions will appear, and these need to beedited to match those shown below.

    4.2 You are now ready to re-instate themodel -

    Left click to finish the modification tothe sketch and your 3D model should re-appear complete with grooves for the Orings.

    Go to the File menu and left click Save > OK

    This will save the part to the Bottle_Stopperworking directory.

    5.0 Design Task:What would you need to do now to createtwo new parts for the rubber seals?

    Note : How to add a dimension :To place the 6mm dimension between thetwo circles

    Zoom in so that you have a clear view of the

    two circles - left click to select Createdefining dimension

    Left click on the centre axes of each circle inturn - they should turn cyan to show that theyhave been selected.

    Middle click to place the dimension

    Left click OK on the Select box to acceptyour dimensions
