The 2015–16 academic year has been an exciting one! This marks yet another year that our aerospace programs rank among the top four in the nation according to U.S. News & World Report. The College of Engineering Graduate Program is also now ranked #6, which is a rank ahead of UIUC, Georgia Tech,and Purdue, with whom we were tied last year. We are delighted to celebrate such an honor and accomplishment and hope you will join our excitement!

In addition to these new honors, we continue to be proud of our department’s over 100-year heritage and have made new additions to the History section of our website. Our emeritus faculty, Harris McClamroch, Elmer Gilbert and Robert Howe, have put together an extensive record of events about the development of the Flight Dynamics and Control (FDC) area of our department. Their history recounts the early days of FDC in 1968, when it was a joint program called Computer Information Control Engineer-ing (CICE), all the way to its standalone exis-tence today. Visit our website to view this 20-page history along with an archive of our course listings as far back as 1917 and other historical publications.

As we adapt to this dynamic field and prepare for curriculum changes going forward, it is useful to reflect on how the curriculum has changed over the last 100 years. Our Industrial Advisory Board (IAB) and faculty have begun to discuss strategic plans related to the curriculum and in particular how to embrace computing in a more direct way. Through several retreats and meetings this past year, our strategic planning statement has been revised to:

will revolutionize aerospace engineering for the benefit of society.Since our last newsletter, we also welcomed sev-eral faculty into the department: Dr. Dimitra Pa-nagou, Dr. Venkat Raman and Dr. Henry Sodano. Dr. Panagou joined our FDC group. She received her Ph.D. in engineering and diploma degree in mechanical engineering from the School of Mechanical Engineering at the National Tech-nical University of Athens, Greece. She was re-cently nominated for and received the College of Engineering’s 2016 Willie Hobbs Moore Award. Associate Professor Venkat Raman joins our Gas Dynamics group and specializes in computational models for turbulent reacting flows with applica-tion to combustion. Dr. Venkat received his Ph.D. from Iowa State University in chemical engineer-ing and joins us after nine years as a faculty mem-ber at the University of Texas at Austin. Dr. Venkat was recently honored by becoming an associate fellow of AIAA. Finally, Associate Professor Henry Sodano joined our Structures and Materials group. Dr. Sodano’s research lies in advanced aerospace materials with a focus on composite materials, multifunctional materials, additive manufactur-ing, ceramics and nanotechnology. In 2005, he received his Ph.D. in mechanical engineering from Virginia Tech, where he also received his M.S. and B.S. in 2003 and 2002, respectively. He was re-cently named an ASME fellow.

Our faculty members continue to be recognized with various honors and awards (see pages 28-29). Many of our faculty have given numerous invited lectures and keynotes at conferences, illustrating the extensive contributions our fac-ulty and graduate students have made to aero-space research.

Specifically, we also congratulate Peretz Fried-mann, Francois Xavier Bagnoud Professor, for his recent selection as the recipient of the 2016 Meir Hanin International Memorial Prize. He was awarded the Hanin Prize in Israel, where he gave two lectures including the Hanin Memorial Lecture at the 56th Israel Annual Conference on Aerospace Sciences (IACAS).

Even further, the high level of our faculty was perhaps most publicly illustrated in February 2016 when the University of Michigan Board of Regents selected Professor Alec Gallimore as the next Robert J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering. Alec succeeds David Munson Jr., who held the post for two terms, or 10 years. Dr. Gallimore was also recognized as the recipient of the Richard F. and Eleanor A. Towner Professorship with a spe-cial reception on April 8th. In addition to these accomplishments, Dr. Gallimore’s research also received notable attention by NASA, who select-ed his thruster as part of its Next Space Technol-ogies for Exploration Partnerships, or NextSTEP program. The spacecraft engine prototype will help take humans to Mars. We look forward to seeing the College of Engineering continue to be in such capable hands.

There have also been other changes to the de-partment including new hire Jessica Jones, who joined our staff in February as the Human Re-source Generalist. Jessica received her bache-

lor’s and master’s degrees in human resources from Eastern Michigan University, and we excit-edly welcome her to U-M.

While our faculty continues to rise to the chal-lenges of the present and future, our students are making preparations and accomplishments of their own. Incoming undergraduate enroll-ments have been steady at roughly 100 per class, and we also graduate nearly that number each year. Our 2015 graduate class included 82 students — 25 Ph.D. students and 56 master’s students — bringing our total number of grad-uate students to 280, about half of whom are in the Ph.D. program. We are proud that over 34 percent of our new Ph.D. students are female.

Our current students also continue to excel, with several winning awards for best papers and na-tional design competitions. For example, two of our undergraduates students, Christopher Weston and Ariel Sandberg, received the 2016 Aviation Week 20 Twenties Award. The Universi-ty of Michigan chapter of SEDS, Students for the Exploration and Development of Space, recent-ly placed third in an international competition to design a satellite network around Mars, and, when SpaceX President Elon Musk challenged student teams to design the best pod for the Hyperloop, a futuristic transportation system, a new student team was created. Assistant Pro-fessor Mirko Gamba has led a group of our un-dergrads and students from other universities to compete in the Hyperloop competition, and their team, Openloop, advanced to the final round in August. We congratulate all of our students and wish Openloop all the best this summer.

In addition, our alumni are constantly in the news for their notable achievements in the industry.

Alums Danny Ellis and Tom Brady’s successful drone company, Skyspecs, has developed auton-omy and analytics software to make industrial inspections and other enterprise drone applica-tions safe and easy. The company is backed in part by NSF and is geared up to carry out thou-sands of wind turbine inspections.

While on the topic of industry, we are pleased to announce that our Industry Advisory Board has expanded over the last few years. Newer mem-bers include Trudy F. Kortes, chief, Space Tech-nology Project Office at NASA Glenn Research Center; Robert Meyerson, president of Blue Or-igin; and Joseph Ensor, VP and GM of Northrop Grumman Corporation. We will convene at our annual meeting on October 20th, the day before Homecoming Weekend.

Finally, the faculty and I have been on a journey toward a strategic plan to improve our curric-ulum and increase our research areas. We are working hard to propagate a legacy of excellence in teaching, research and service related to the future of aerospace.

As mentioned at the start of this letter, it has cer-tainly been a whirlwind of an academic year! While many fruits of our labors are already becoming evident, we look forward with anticipation to what the future holds. Thank you for joining us in cele-brating this exciting news, and thank you for your constant support of our department.

AERO WELCOMES JESSICA JONES

Jessica Jones is a human resources (HR) professional at the University of Michigan. She joined the Department of Aerospace Engineering as the Human Resource Generalist in February of this year. Jones earned her B.B.A. with honors in business administration and her M.S. in human resources and organizational development from Eastern Michigan University. Before returning to the

higher education setting, she was an HR coordinator at a healthcare facility in Ann Arbor, where she gained expertise in many disciplines, including recruitment and selection, employee relations, training and development, compensation and benefits. Throughout her career, she has been a guest speaker on multiple occasions discussing the HR field in today’s society, and was even featured as a recruiter in a television commercial. Jones is a member of the nationwide Society for Human Resource Management (SHRM) and the Greater Ann Arbor Society for Human Resource Management (GAASHRM). From horrible tragedy can come the start of something incredible. When the Space Shuttle Challenger exploded in 1986, Trudy Kortes — then a junior at Farmington High School — was inspired to become an aerospace engineer.

“I WAS ALWAYS GOOD AT MATH AND SCIENCE,” she explained. Growing up, her father was an engineer and supervisor at the Ford Motor Company and consistently encouraged her to pursue an engineering degree. “One of his favorite things to say to me was, ‘No one can ever take that away from you.’ But my true journey began on January 28, 1986.

“My teacher, Mr. Krupka, immediately rolled in a TV on an audiovisual cart, and we spent the rest of class watching the television coverage of the aftermath of [the Challenger disaster],” she said. “I was fascinated and inspired to go into aerospace engineering from that point forward, because I wanted to work in an environment surrounded by really smart people and be inspired to do great things for our nation.”

Almost 30 years later, Kortes is doing just that. Today, she works for NASA on an assignment as the program executive for the Technology Demonstration Missions Program, which advances cutting-edge technologies to a state in which they are proven and ready for use. She also serves as NASA’s John H. Glenn Research Center’s chief of the Space Technology Project Office, where her job includes supervising 13

project managers and managing millions of dollars in project costs.

Before her career at NASA began, however, Kortes graduated from the University of Michigan in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in aerospace engineering. During her time as a student at Michigan, she remembers Professor Powell and the late Professor Faeth as influencing her the most. “They encouraged me to apply to various internship programs,” she says, “and taught me the difference between theory and a testing/laboratory environment.”

Having been influenced so strongly by her professors, Kortes warns current undergrad-uates against being shy in asking for help. “You never know when you are going to meet someone who can be a mentor or provide an opportunity or guidance you need at various turns in your career,” she said. “Even though you are a data-driven engineer, don’t underestimate the power and importance of using your own gut instinct in making important life decisions. …And, finally and most importantly, work hard and be persistent. It always pays off.”

Even beyond her experience as a student, Kortes continues to embody the true meaning of the Michigan Difference. “I think of that phrase not just as a university advertising slogan, but I truly take it to heart,” she said. “Find the intersection of the things you enjoy doing and the things you are good at, and find a way to have someone pay you to do that. It’s the best way to make a living and be happy along the way, too.”

Now a successful and influential engineer years after her high school dreams, it is safe to say that Kortes has found that intersection, and the University of Michigan Aerospace Engineering Department is delighted and honored to welcome her to our Industry Advisory Board.

During her time on the board, Kortes hopes to advance the strategic success of the department by using her experience to help faculty align courses for student success. She also aims to assist in recruiting science and engineering students, alerting the department to internship experiences and expanding university-industry collaboration.

To alumni looking to give back to the department, Kortes encourages attending recruiting events, speaking with students and helping them make connections to begin their careers. “Come back to campus from time to time and see for yourself what’s going on and how things have changed since you graduated,” she remarked.

“AND, ALWAYS, CARRY YOUR ‘GO BLUE!’ WITH PRIDE! TOGETHER, WE ALL COLLECTIVELY MAKE UP THE ‘MICHIGAN DIFFERENCE.’ ” When she isn’t working, Kortes enjoys indoor cycling classes, quilting, watching her children play sports, cheering on the Michigan football team, and practicing her talents as a standup comic or humorous corporate speaker. She is married to Andrew Kortes (B.A. Economics ’91) and has two sons and a daughter.

EXPERIENCING THE FUTURE OF NASA

I often worry that, to most of the world, NASA died after Apollo 11. Even the most disinterested student at least knows that humanity landed on the moon, but what about the rest? When the world thinks NASA, I fear they remember only the beginning…and the budget cuts.

Standing on the floor of NASA’s famous Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB), however—the same floor where Apollo Saturn Vs and Shuttle rockets were assembled—I was struck not by worry, but by awe. Instead of wishing only that the world would notice the past and present, I longed for them to experience this taste of the future.

…But first, the beginning.

THE NEW GLORY DAYSIn 2009, NASA founded what would eventually become NASA Social. To bring the public into their work, NASA Social invites social media users to come behind the scenes to events closed to the public, like press conferences or rocket launches. Earlier this fall, they released an application to go backstage at Kennedy Space Center for the launch of a resupply mission to the International Space Station (ISS). As the social media coordinator for the aerospace engineering department, I optimistically applied and was astonished to find that I had been accepted.

Ultimately, this is how, with the shadow of Finals Week looming over me, I found myself standing on the floor of the Vehicle Assembly Building watching, of all things, construction work.

As it turns out, Kennedy Space Center is not a museum to history. The VAB is not a towering testament to days gone by, and the launch pads are not reminders of stale missions. Instead, a hum of something different lingers in the air….

At Kennedy, new glory days are about to be born.

THE COMMERCIAL SPACE ERAUnfortunately, NASA has been unable to launch astronauts from American soil since the Shuttle program ended in 2011; instead, we’ve been spending millions to buy rides to orbit with Russia. Soon, however, that will change.

Although the commercial space industry has been around since the 1960s, it is entering a new era. Not only are companies like Boeing, Blue Origin, United Launch Alliance (ULA) and SpaceX working toward a taste of the heavens, but they are doing this together with NASA, and this is nowhere as evident as with NASA’s Commercial Crew Program (CCP).

The Commercial Crew Program is a joint venture with multiple companies to once again launch Americans from U.S. soil. Though NASA has always used contractors, the CCP allows them to work more directly with these companies, and the companies in turn operate their own spacecraft and infrastructure.

In 2017, the CCP will send astronauts to space on a new rocket: SLS, or Space Launch System. SLS is the most powerful rocket NASA has ever created, and they will use it to send astronauts to the ISS, Mars and perhaps beyond.

A TASTE OF THINGS TO COME

In light of this, Kennedy is abuzz with antici-pation. As I traveled with NASA Social through its 140,000 acres, exploring launch pads and meeting engineers, there was energy every-where. The entire facility is wrapped in that feel-ing of a child on Christmas Eve: the feeling that something beautiful is coming — something wonderful — and that it is about to arrive.

When the resupply mission finally launched December 6th (three days late, thanks to the weather), it was the first commercial cargo mis-sion ever sent to the ISS. With a rocket by ULA, a spacecraft by Orbital ATK, and payloads from around the country — including a CubeSat, CADRE, created by U-M’s Michigan Exploration Laboratory-Strato and led by Associate Pro-

fessor Jamie Cutler — it marked a momentous step in this new space age.

Despite any doubt, the future of NASA is bright. To see construction workers scurrying about preparing for SLS…to see that all up close was entirely magical, and those preparations are not the only things happening at Kennedy. Swamp Works (Kennedy’s equivalent to the Lockheed Martin Skunk Works) has developed 3D printers that craft buildings out of moon dust. Scientists are helping astronauts grow lettuce and tomatoes in space. Engineers are creating new oxygen/nitrogen tanks and satellites to study the atmosphere and more — everywhere I looked, there was always more.

Spend a moment in the halls of Aerospace En-gineering’s François-Xavier Bagnoud Building, and you’ll find this enthusiasm among all of the aerospace majors — but, perhaps strangely, I’m not studying aerospace at all. When I graduate this spring, my degree will actually come from the psychology department, and perhaps that’s a testament to how beautiful space exploration really is. After all, it doesn’t take an engineer to see the beauty of creation. Even artists have always been captivated by the stars — so why can’t we all be, if only for a moment?

Space, after all, is not just for rocket scien-tists. For engineers and artists, scientists and schoolteachers, a grand, human adventure waits just beyond the horizon — but with the work NASA is doing today, maybe adventure has already begun.

On March 13, Senators John Thune (R-SD) and Bill Nelson (D-FL) submitted a bill proposing increased FAA control over how universities handle unmanned aircraft. As explained by Dr. Ella Atkins, however, such a call for increased regulations has the strong potential to harm educational and research efforts.

Much of Atkins’ work has focused on autonomous aircraft technologies, and her teaching and research have been directly impacted by FAA regulations. As federal policies have evolved, she said, they have placed restrictions on universities that hinder teaching, prevent students from gaining valuable experience and dramatically slow or halt research efforts.

PREVIOUS REGULATIONSUnder previous regulations, anyone looking to operate a unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), even for low, non-intrusive flights, was required to obtain a certificate of authorization (COA). While seeming-ly harmless, this process had two significant drawbacks: (1) All craft were required to operate within a set of GPS coordinates, which meant that science vehicles were unable to conduct research out-side their pre-determined testing area, and (2) COAs were only available to public institutions, mean-ing private colleges or universities were barred from legally operating UAVs for teaching or research.

Regulations like these arose out of miscon-ceptions about unmanned aerial vehicles. While UAVs are well-known for their failures, Atkins stressed that these stories are not representative of most UAV use. The work conducted by universities, for example, can be supervised by faculty and review boards and takes place in areas far from larger aircraft, such as at Academy of Model Aeronautics (AMA) fields or university-owned or -leased properties. Unfortunately, the amount of pub-licity received by UAV blunders, made primar-ily by uninformed hobbyists, has cast the en-tire category in an unfavorable light, and the regulations have continued to increase.

WHY THE CONTROL? How is it possible for the FAA to have so much control? Much of it has to do with their claim to property rights of American airspace. Ac-cording to the U.S. Code, Atkins explained, all navigable airspace is considered the sov-ereign property of the United States, and the FAA has the right to regulate it as they choose fit. Although this code was intended for large, manned aircraft at higher altitudes, with the advent of UAVs, the FAA now considers all air-space down to the ground navigable and has been imposing regulations as such.

Are they legally able to consider all airspace navigable, however? The Supreme Court case United States v. Causby (1946) casts doubt on the claim. In this case, it was determined that navigable airspace is actually that above the “minimum safe altitude” of 500 to 1000 feet. In Causby’s situation, the aircraft passing overhead were only 83 feet off the ground, and the Supreme Court ruled that this airspace was actually part of Causby’s property and that the federal government did not have jurisdiction over it. Despite this ruling, however, the FAA operates today as if all airspace to the ground is actually under their authority and control. This raises issues and questions of its own.

The additional control was ultimately imple-mented in order to address Congress’s privacy and safety concerns regarding UAVs. However, these regulations are likely too strict to be reasonable. For privacy to be violated, a drone must carry a camera or recording device. The FAA takes this a step further and considers the vehicle itself an invasion. In addition, while

safety concerns are valid, tight FAA policies which, while effective at managing safety, also stifle all practical use of UAVs.

THE ADVENT OF TEST SITESIn order to address their safety concerns, the FAA has established test sites where UAVs can be flown legally. The FAA is putting pressure on Congress so that any UAV reauthorization automatically favors these new sites. While this sounds like a solution, the sites—which the Nelson-Thune bill strongly support—have the potential to bring university UAV research to a halt.

Not only are the test sites few and far between — the closest one to Ann Arbor is in Alpena, Michigan, a four-hour drive — they are also expensive and require extensive paperwork. Besides being unrealistic for a research pro-posal, this process also makes student aero-space engineering teams’ use of test sites vir-tually impossible. These teams, which operate under the “design, build, fly” model, gather most of their data by frequently flight testing. If each flight took months of paperwork and hundreds or thousands of dollars to complete, it would be unrealistic to learn anything or pre-

pare any craft for competition. This invaluable learning opportunity, which launches most students into internships and careers, would be impossible.

In addition, new developments from Section 2152 of the FAA reauthorization bill have the potential to institute even more limiting restric-tions beyond the test sites. Under this propos-al, no state would be free to pass its own laws regarding unmanned aircraft, but would have unlimited authority to ban and fine violations of FAA policy. Although ridiculous-sounding, this in effect allows local authorities and land-owners to ban or fine but not to authorize a thrown football if the FAA decides footballs are dangerous to airspace. It removes virtually all

power from states and places it in the hands of the federal government. While this preemp-tion may be useful to protect higher altitude airspace and airport areas from rogue drones, it instead goes a step further into regulating backyard and park airspace.

Unlike what is stated in the reauthorization bill, Atkins believes that local communities should be given the power instead. Commu-nities are more able to address the needs of their citizens than a federal institution, and by allowing cities to establish “drone parks” and property owners to decide who flies in their immediate reaches airspace, more reasonable policies would be outlined to the benefit of all.

MOVING FORWARDShould these strict regulations continue, it will remain difficult for both students and researchers to make valuable contributions to the field of unmanned aerial vehicle research. In order to develop a policy that keeps both the interests of the general public and aerospace engineers in mind, policymakers must understand the realities of UAV flight and what is at stake for the future of engineering, education and research.

ecently award-ed a $6 million grant from the Air Force Office of Scientific Re-search, a group

of researchers will be first to produce the most detailed analysis of bird flight ever made for an aerospace engineer-ing project. The project is headed by Daniel Inman, the Clarence “Kelly” Johnson Professor and a professor of aerospace engineering at the Univer-sity of Michigan, with researchers at Stanford University and the University of California, Los Angeles leading parts of the effort.

The team will use a model to explore how birds use their tails for stability. While aircraft have vertical tails, the tails of most birds are horizontal. While modern, rigid-wing airplanes use drag-inducing flaps and slats for control, birds manipulate individual feathers or clusters of feathers on their wings, creating surfaces that control flight without wasting energy.

“With new materials, advanced sensing and control techniques and inventive methods for observing birds in flight, our team will begin to bring avian efficiency and agility to aircraft,” said Inman.

Better efficiency will make battery- powered unmanned aircraft more prac-tical, whereas many now rely on fossil fuels. The team will also explore whether new wings and tails could work on small, crewed aircraft.

Rather than burdening small birds with sensors to measure airflow, pressure and other forces, David Lentink, an assistant professor of mechanical en-gineering at Stanford University, has developed a system that measures pressure disturbances in the air around the bird.

This model of an airplane wing can change its shape while maintaining a continuous surface. “It is really exciting that we can now finally study bird flight with an engineering eye,” said Lentink, who is also a biologist. “The time- resolved forces on the wings, in com-

bination with 3D wing shape measure-ments at 1,000 frames per second, are key to deciphering how birds change shape to control the aerodynamic force they generate.”

Other biologists on the project will mount cameras on the backs of large species such as eagles. These will pro-vide closeup views of the wings as the birds take off, glide, maneuver and land. A third group will explore how wing mus-cles work together to manipulate the shape of the wing.

The engineers will investigate a variety of avenues toward producing morphing wings for aircraft. They’ll test materials that alter wing shape in response to stimuli such as temperature changes or electric current. The researchers be-lieve they can assemble structures re-sembling the bone and muscle in birds wings through 3D printing.

develop sensors that can be distributed through the wing like nerves. These will report airflow and pressure data back to the computer—information that birds instinctively collect and use in flight.

“A biological neural network can process signals at a speed comparable to a supercomputer while weighing only one millionth as much and consuming one millionth the power,” said Yong Chen, a professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering at UCLA. Brain-like circuits will be able to quickly and efficiently process information from the sensors,

using it to choose the best wing shapes to maneuver the aircraft.

The engineering team includes Darren Hartl, a research assistant professor in aerospace engineering at Texas A&M, who will develop components for changing the wing shape using shape memory alloys. Inman and Henry Sodano, an associate professor

of aerospace engineering at U-M, will explore new materials and ways to structure the wings. Fu-Kuo Chang, a professor of aeronautics and astro-nautics at Stanford, will build distributed sensing systems for the wings, working closely with Chen.

Douglas Altshuler, an associate pro-fessor of zoology at the University of British Columbia in Canada, will study tactile feedback in birds and work with Lentink on the analysis of bird flight. Richard Bomphrey, a reader in biomechanics at the Royal Veterinary College in the UK, will use cameras to investigate how birds alter the shapes of their wings to control flight. Graham Taylor, a professor of mathematical biology at Oxford University in the UK, will provide data that he previously collected on bird flight.

new way of computing could lead to immediate advances in aerodynamics, climate science, cosmology, materials science and cardiovascular research. The National Science Foundation is providing $2.42 million to develop a unique facility for refining complex, physics-based computer models with big data techniques at the University of Michigan, with the university providing an additional $1.04 million.

The focal point of the project will be a new computing resource, called ConFlux, which is designed to enable supercomputer simulations to interface with large datasets while running. This capability will close a gap in the U.S. research computing infrastructure and place U-M at the forefront of the emerging field of data-driven physics. The new Center for Data-Driven Computational Physics will build and manage ConFlux.

The project will add supercomputing nodes designed specifically to enable data-intensive operations. The nodes will be equipped with next-generation central

and graphics processing units, large memories and ultra-fast interconnects.

A three-petabyte hard drive will seamlessly handle both traditional and big data storage. U-M’s Advanced Research Computing — Technology Services provided critical support in defining the technical requirements of ConFlux. The project exemplifies the objectives of President Barack Obama’s new National Strategic Computing Initiative, which has called for the use of vast datasets in addition to increasing brute force computing power.

The common challenge among the five main studies in the grant is a matter of scale. The processes of interest can be traced back to the behaviors of atoms and molecules, billions of times smaller than the human-scale, or larger questions that researchers want to answer.

Even the most powerful computer in the world cannot handle these calculations without resorting to approximations, said Karthik Duraisamy, an assistant professor of aerospace engineering and director of the new center. “Such a disparity of

scales exists in many problems of interest to scientists and engineers,” he said.

But approximate models often aren’t accurate enough to answer many important questions in science, engineering and medicine. “We need to leverage the availability of past and present data to refine and improve existing models,” Duraisamy explained.

This data could come from accurate simulations with a limited scope, small enough to be practical on existing supercomputers, as well as from experiments and measurements. The new computing nodes will be optimized for operations such as feeding data from the hard drive into algorithms that use the data to make predictions, a technique known as “machine learning.”

“Big data is typically associated with web analytics, social networks and online advertising. ConFlux will be a unique facility specifically designed for physical modeling using massive volumes of data,” said Barzan Mozafari, an assistant professor of computer science and engineering,

The faculty members spearheading this project come from departments across the university, but all are members of the Michigan Institute for Computational Discovery and Engineering (MICDE), which was launched in 2013.

“MICDE is the home at U-M of the so-called third pillar of scientific discovery, computational science, which has taken its place alongside theory and experiment,” said Krishna Garikipati, MICDE’s associate director for research.

The following projects will be the first to utilize the new computing capabilities:

• Turbulence. When a flow of air or water breaks up into swirls and eddies, the pure physics equations become too complex to solve. But more accurate turbulence simulation would speed up the development of more efficient airplane designs. It would also improve weather forecasting, climate science and other fields that involve the flow of liquids or gases. Duraisamy leads this project.

• Clouds, rainfall and climate. Clouds play a central role in whether the atmosphere retains or releases heat. Wind, temperature, land use and particulates such as smoke, pollen and air pollution all affect cloud formation and precipitation. Derek Posselt, an associate professor of atmospheric, oceanic and space sciences, and his team plan to use computer models to determine how clouds and precipitation respond to changes in the climate in particular regions and seasons.

• Material property prediction. Material scientists would like to be able to predict a material’s properties based on its chemical composition and structure, but supercomputers aren’t powerful enough to scale atom-level interactions up to bulk qualities such as strength, brittleness or chemical stability. An effort led by Garikipati and Vikram Gavini, an associate professor of mechanical engineering, will combine existing theories with the help of data on material structure and properties.

“It will enable a fundamentally new description of material behavior—guided by theory, but respectful of the cold facts of the data. Wholly new materials that transcend metals, polymers or ceramics can then be designed with applications ranging from tissue replacement to space travel,” said Garikipati, who is also a professor of mathematics.

” Big data is typically associated with web analytics, social networks and online advertising. ConFlux will be a unique facility specifically designed for physical modeling using massive volumes of data.”

NASA gave the dream of travel to Mars new credibility

by funding a spaceflight propulsion system to be built around a tabletop-sized thruster developed by Alec Gallimore, the Richard F. and Eleanor A. Towner Professor of Engineering and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor in the U-M Department of Aerospace Engineering.

The agency selected the thruster as part of its Next Space Technologies for Exploration Partnerships, or NextSTEP program. NextSTEP encompasses a set of projects aimed at im-proving small satellites, propulsion and human living quarters in space. These are milestones toward sending humans into orbit between the Earth and the moon in the 2020s and to Mars the following decade.

NASA awarded $6.5 million over the next three years to Aerojet Rocketdyne for the develop-ment of the propulsion system, dubbed the XR-100. Gallimore’s thruster, the X3, is central to this system, and his team at U-M will receive $1 million of the award for work on the thruster.

The XR-100 is up against two compet-ing designs. All three of them rely on

ejecting plasma — an energetic state of mat-ter in which electrons and charged atoms called ions coexist — out the back of the thruster.

But the X3 has a bit of a head start. For thrusters of its design power, 200 kilowatts, it is relatively small and light. And the core technology — the Hall thruster — is already in use for maneuvering satellites in orbit around the Earth.

“For comparison, the most power-ful Hall thruster in orbit right now is 4.5 kilowatts,” said Gallimore. That’s enough to adjust the orbit or orienta-tion of a satellite, but it’s too little power to move the massive amounts of cargo needed to support human exploration of deep space.

A Hall thruster works by accelerating the plas-ma exhaust to extremely high speeds. The pro-cess starts with a current of electrons spiraling through a circular channel. On their whirlwind journey from the negative electrode at the ex-haust end to the positively charged electrode on the inner side of the channel, they run into atoms (typically xenon gas) that are fed into the chamber. The collisions knock electrons off the xenon atoms and turn the xenon into posi-tively charged ions.

The electrons’ spiraling motion also builds a powerful electric field that pulls the gas ions

out the exhaust end of the channel. Just enough electrons leave with the ions to

keep the spacecraft from accumulat-ing a charge, which could otherwise cause electrical problems.

“When they’re ionized, the xenon atoms can shoot out at up to 30,000 meters per second, which is

about 65,000 mph,” said Gallimore.

The X3 contains three of these chan-nels, each a few centimeters deep,

nested around one another in concen-tric rings. The nesting is what allows the

Hall thruster to operate at 200 kilowatts of power in a relatively small footprint.

Aerojet Rocketdyne will be building two major components around the X3. The full-fledged propulsion system will need a power process-ing unit to deliver electricity from a spacecraft’s solar arrays to the thruster, and a system for feeding xenon gas from high-pressure tanks into the channels where the action happens.

Scott Hall, a doctoral student in Gallimore’s lab, will use the funding to put the X3 through a battery of tests, running it up to 60 kilowatts in the Plasmadynamics and Electric Propulsion Lab at U-M and then up to 200 kilowatts at the NASA Glenn Research Center in Cleveland, Ohio.

Meanwhile, another doctoral student, Sarah Cusson, will investigate a tweak that could al-low the X3 to remain operational for five to 10 times longer than its current lifetime of a little over a year.

“If we do our jobs over the next three years, we can deliver both projects,” said Gallimore. “If I had to predict, I would say this thruster would be the basis for sending humans to Mars.”

Peretz Friedmann Selected as the Recipient of the 2016 Meir Hann International Memorial Prize The Meir Hanin International Memorial Prize (M.H.I.M.P.) Committee, at the Technion, in Haifa, Israel, announced that Peretz P. Friedmann, François-Xavier Bagnoud Professor of Aerospace Engineering, was the 2016 winner of the International Hanin Prize. The Hanin Prize is awarded to honor prominent researchers from any country around the world who have made substantial scientific and/or technological contributions to the advancement of aerospace sciences and have ties with the Technion. The Hanin Prize will be awarded to Friedmann in Israel, where he will give two lectures, one at the 56th Israel Annual Conference on Aerospace Sciences (IACAS) and the other at the Technion for the faculty of aerospace engineering.

Benjamin Jorns to Join AERO Faculty in 2017 Benjamin Jorns received a B.S. in physics from Yale University in 2007 and an M.A. and Ph.D. in mechanical and aerospace engineering from Princeton University in 2009 and 2012, respec-tively. Since 2013, he has been a technologist in the electric propulsion group at the NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. His work at JPL combines experimental and an-alytical techniques to investigate plasma-based propulsion systems for the next generation of NASA robotic missions. Jorns also holds a lectur-er appointment in the mechanical and aerospace engineering department at UCLA, where he teaches an upper-level undergraduate elective on space flight.

Jorns will join the aerospace faculty at the University of Michigan in January as a co-director of the Plasmadynamics and Electric Propulsion Laboratory (PEPL). This group, founded by the College of Engineering’s Dean Alec Gallimore, is one the leading centers for advanced propulsion research in the world. Jorns’ research topics at PEPL will include wear mechanisms and stability in electric propulsion systems, turbulence and nonlinear processes in low temperature plasmas, developing new plasma diagnostics, and investigating breakthrough forms of in-space propulsion.

Jorns and his wife, Jenna, are originally from Illinois and are very much looking forward to starting this great opportunity so close to home.

Henry Sodano Becomes a Fellow of ASME The American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) has elected Associate Professor Henry Sodano an ASME Fellow. The Society’s Fellow Grade recognizes significant engineering achievements and contributions to the profession.

Sodano’s research lies in advanced aerospace materials with a focus on composite materials, multifunctional materials, additive manufacturing, ceramics and nanotechnology. His laboratory uses a cross-disciplinary approach to enable rapid advancement in the current state of the art of advanced materials and structures.

Dimitra Panagou Nominated for Willie Hobbs Moore Award Assistant Professor Dimitra Panagou has been nominated for the Aspire, Advance, Achieve Mentoring Award for her outstanding work with students. This award, given as part of the Willie Hobbs Moore Award, is presented by the Women in Science and Engineering Program (WISE). Willie Hobbs Moore was the first African-American woman to earn a B.S. and M.S. in electrical engineering at the University of Michigan and was also the first African-American woman to receive a Ph.D. in physics at any institution.

The University of Michigan Board of Regents has appointed U-M Aerospace Engineering Professor Alec Gallimore as the next Robert J. Vlasic Dean of Engineering. He took office in July. Gallimore succeeds David Munson, Jr., who held the post for two terms.

Propelling the College Forward

Alec Gallimore has 24 years of service as a scholar, educator and administrator at Michigan Engineering. He is the Richard F. and Eleanor A. Towner Professor and an Arthur F. Thurnau Professor.

Gallimore has mentored dozens of Ph.D. students — some of whom he now competes against for NASA funding. The students, post-doctoral fellows and research scientists in his lab have conducted fundamental plasma physics research in support of space missions such as NASA’s Deep Space 1 and Dawn. His lab is currently working on the thrusters that might take humans to Mars. Gallimore also holds the distinction of being the only “rocket scientist” ever to be interviewed by Chewbacca

on a national tech blog. (It was about that Mars thruster.)

He has pushed for hands-on learning, interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in the classroom and the research lab. He describes himself as passionate about diversity in engineering and academia, and serves as co-chair of the college’s committee on diversity, equity and inclusion. Gallimore is one of the founders of NextProf, an annual workshop that aims to prepare underrepresented graduate students and early-career scientists and engineers from around the nation for careers in academia.

“ When I started here as a 27-year-old ‘kid,’ nowhere in my wildest dreams could I have imagined that about 25 years later, I’d be named the dean. But I’m really looking forward to working with the faculty, staff and students to take an already world-class engineering college and make it even better.”

In 2015, a team of students from the University of Michigan chapter of SEDS (Students for Exploration and Development of Space) took third place in an international satellite design competition. The Satellites Around Mars competition was held jointly between SEDS-USA and the Society of Satellite Professionals International. As the name suggests, each student team designed a global satellite communications network around Mars, and designs were presented in Boston, Massachusetts at SpaceVision 2015.

Representing the University were Robert Gitten (BSAE ’17), John Behrendt (BSAE ’16), Joshua Aviles (BSAE ’17) and Jason Wallace (MBA ’16). Beginning in February, the team worked through the summer until the September deadline, juggling internships and other plans to complete this undertaking.

“[The competition] wanted us to design a system of satellites that could provide continuous, 24-hour communications coverage to most of Mars for both human and robotic missions,” described team lead Robert Gitten. “This is a tremendous step up from NASA’s current communications system, where missions like the Curiosity rover can only get good reception with Earth for a few minutes each day.”

Although the team built off previous satellite designs from Associate Professor Jamie Cutler’s AERO 483 course, there was still extensive work to be done. AERO 483 provided the basic framework for the SEDS team — a constellation of 36 satellites, 32 small CubeSats and four carriers — but most systems had to be redone. Gitten and his team redesigned the network’s radios, antennae, relay systems, thrusters, solar panels and radiators. Much of this work was electrical engineering and computer science, not aerospace engineering, which drove the team out of their comfort zone. “Things moved at a snail’s pace, and there were times I thought no one had the will to finish the project,” Gitten admitted.

When SpaceVision 2015 arrived, however, M-CONeCT 2.0 was complete and came away with third prize and a wealth of experience.

“Most student contests are about designing really big things like space colonies or human missions to Mars,” explained Gitten. “Designing these grandiose projects is fun, but you get the feeling that it is of little to no practical application. The satellite project, on the other hand…was a chance to learn about the process involved in designing an actual working satellite. There are companies out there right now trying to do the same thing as M-CONeCT, only they’re providing Internet access to the developing world instead of supporting the missions on Mars.”

Although he has worked on other projects like this before, Gitten called M-CONeCT 2.0 the first spacecraft he has designed that he is proud of. “The smaller scale and ambition forced me to work like an actual engineer,” he said.

BUILDING THE FUTURE OF HYPERLOOP TRANSPORTATION

When SpaceX founder Elon Musk launched a competition to revolutionize the future of transportation, U-M students jumped in. Aerospace Engineering students Nic Roberts, Shivam Sharma, Derek Lukacs and Hossein Zabihian are members of an intercollegiate team called Openloop. Started this year, Openloop has designed a prototype Hyperloop pod that tests the beginnings of a revolutionary transportation system — one that could turn a four-hour car ride into a 30-minute trip. They will compete against 30 other teams and test their 4’ tall prototype in Hawthorne, California.

In June 2015, Musk challenged student teams to design the best pod for the Hyperloop, a futuristic transportation system. In the Hyperloop, pods powered by linear induction motors travel along rails, similar to modern bullet trains. However, using either compressed air skates or magnetic levitation (maglev), the pods hover above the rails in a low-pressure vacuum tube. Ultimately, this results in a transonic transportation system that dramatically reduces transportation time. Musk’s competition proposal was simple: design the best Hyperloop pod.

With Openloop, U-M students teamed up with students from Cornell, Princeton, Northeastern, Memorial University of Newfoundland and Harvey Mudd. The project was split into five different subsystems: fuselage, compressed air, suspension/air skates, controls and electrical, with Michigan designing the fuselage.

“A NASA article on Hyperloop published last year gave us a starting point for our design,” explained team member Nic Roberts, “and the mentorship of our advisor, Dr. Mirko Gamba, also proved critical to keeping us on track. We took inspiration from aircraft frames when designing our fuselage substructure, but other than that, it was a fairly original design tailored to interface with the SpaceX propulsion device.”

Perhaps the most innovative feature of the Openloop design, however, is the air skate system. Such a system has never been widely tested or used in low-pressure environments like the Hyperloop track. So the team had to start nearly from scratch.

With some assistance from U-M, the Cornell, Northeastern and Memorial University teams

created a brand-new system using only basic aero- and thermodynamic principles. According to Roberts, the team has already carried out a series of tests at Northeastern University and will continue to refine the design for the competition weekend.

Because of the short competition timeline, Openloop nearly became a full-time job, with the team averaging 20 to 30 hours per week on its design. Considering that the Michigan team is primarily freshmen, who are also grappling with classes, jobs and their first semesters of college, it was a whirlwind experience that Roberts admitted was “not easy at all.”

After over 100 student teams presented their designs for consideration at January’s Design Weekend at Texas A&M University, Openloop was only one of about 30 teams to advance to the final round. At this summer’s competition, they will test a large-scale model of their design around SpaceX’s one-mile, six-foot-diameter test track outside their California headquarters. U-M will continue work on the pod’s fuselage, with construction to occur in the Wilson Center.

REYNOLDS RECEIVES AEROSPACE DEPARTMENT LEADERSHIP AWARDThis year’s recipient of the Aerospace Depart-ment Leadership Award was senior Christopher Reynolds.

Reynolds, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, is the first in his family to attend college and plans to begin his master’s degree next year at Michigan in the SUGS (Sequential Undergraduate- Graduate Studies) program. His interests mainly lie in conceptual aircraft design and optimiza-tion along with structures. M-Fly has been one of the highlights of his experiences in the depart-ment; he cites the people on the team as having greatly impacted his personal growth. Reynolds helped begin Aerospace Day with the help of two other strong leaders in the department: Cauê Borlina and Rebecca Hill. Reynolds is also active in promoting diversity and inclusion, specifically among first-generation college students, and socioeconomic diversity. “There are so many humble leaders in this aerospace community at Michigan that go unrecognized, yet they all exemplify the qualities of this award,” he said.

Reynolds was presented with the leadership award and the $1,000 prize it entails at a ceremony in April.

BORLINA TAKES HOME COE DISTINGUISHED LEADERSHIP AWARDCongratulations are in order for aerospace engineering senior Cauê Borlina, recipient of the College of Engineering’s 2016 Distinguished Leadership Award.

This award is presented to CoE undergraduate and graduate students who have “demonstrated outstanding leadership and service to the College, university and community.” Borlina, who was nominated by faculty members, has demonstrated significant leadership abilities and initiative through his work with multiple student groups, research positions and other academic involvement.

Borlina is currently serving as a scientific collaborator for the NASA Mars Science Laboratory Mission (Curiosity Mission) and is also a research assistant in the Department of Climate and Space Sciences and Engineering at the University of Michigan. His interests include planetary formation, surface processes and climate evolution and impact in different planets of the solar system. Borlina is the president of Students for Exploration and Development of Space and, in the past, helped establish Aerospace Day as the chair of the outreach committee of the American Institute of Astronautics and Aeronautics Michigan Chapter. He has also been involved in leading the Aerospace Honors Society for the last two years.

CESNIK AND JONES EARN RECOGNITION FROM THE ROYAL AERONAUTICAL SOCIETYPh.D. candidate Jessica Jones and Professor Carlos Cesnik were recently notified by the Royal Aeronautical Society that they have won a Bronze Award for their research.

The award honors “Preliminary Flight Test Correlations of the X-HALE Aeroelastic Experiment,” a paper they co-wrote on HALE—an experimental, flexible-wing aircraft — and published in July 2015. They will be honored in November at the organization’s Innovation Conference and also in The Aeronautical Journal, the Society’s monthly publication.

The Royal Aeronautical Society, based in London, is the only professional body dedicated to the entire aerospace community.

MICHIGAN AERO IMPROVES FLIGHT STABILITY AT AMERICA’S CUP

The University of Michigan and ORACLE TEAM USA are collaborating on controlling the flight of racing yachts. ORACLE TEAM USA is Defender of the 35th America’s Cup — the oldest trophy in international sport. For the 35th America’s Cup in Bermuda in 2017, the teams will be match racing foiling yachts. These boats are catamarans that use their daggerboards and rudders as wings to lift the hulls off the water, greatly increasing their speed. A key element to winning races is to maintain stable foiling. Ricardo Bencatel, Associate Professor Anouck Girard and Professor Ilya Kolmanovsky, from the Department of Aerospace Engineering, are using their expertise and working together with the ORACLE TEAM USA design team to develop advanced flight controllers to improve “flight stability” of the boats.”

GRADUATE STUDENT SANJAYA AUTHORS 1ST-PRIZE PAPERDevina Sanjaya, a Ph.D. candidate in aerospace engineering at Michigan, was awarded first place for her paper and presentation, titled “Improv-ing High-Order Finite Element Approximation Through Geometrical Warping,” associated with the 6th AIAA CFD Student Paper Competition at the 2015 AIAA Aviation Conference. There were 36 papers entered in the competition. The paper was co-authored by Krzysztof Fidkowski, a Michigan aerospace associate professor.

Before her doctorate study, Sanjaya earned a bachelor of science in aerospace engineering with a minor in mathematics from Michigan and a master of science in aeronautics and astronautics from Stanford University. Her research focuses on the development of algorithms to improve the robustness and accuracy of computational fluid dynamics methods, error estimation and adaptive methods. Currently, she is working on combining geometrical warping with hp-adaptation to further improve high-order finite element approximation power.

WESTON IS HONORED AMONG AVIATION WEEK’S 20 TWENTIESAviation Week’s 20 Twenties program honors 20 rising aerospace and defense students from around the world for their impressive academic and extracurricular accomplishments. In 2016, Michigan’s Chris Weston, a sophomore from Houston, Texas who is studying aerospace engineering with minors in math and music, was among those honorees.

Weston is an active member of multiple student organizations: volunteering with the student chapter of Tau Beta Pi, the national engineering honor society; serving on the professional development committee of the student chapter of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics; and working on M-Fly. Outside of class, Weston enjoys playing the clarinet, is an avid member in the campus bands and plays soccer on intramural teams. Last summer, he worked as an undergraduate researcher in a supersonic flame laboratory at Texas A&M University.

Weston and his colleagues were honored in March at Aviation Week’s Annual Laureates Awards dinner in Washington, DC.

ARIEL SANDBERG EARNS MULTIPLE AWARDS, MAKES A PRESENTATIONLike her colleague Chris Weston, aerospace engineering sophomore Ariel Sandberg was selected as one of Aviation Week’s 20 Twenties for 2016. This award, sponsored by the American Institute for Aeronautics and Astronautics, is given to 20 highly qualified candidates from around the world. Sandberg was honored for her academic performance as well as for her ability to communicate her design and research developments to a broader community.

As a research assistant for the Michigan Exploration Laboratory, Sandberg is spearheading efforts to improve methods of solar panel fabrication to increase the reliability of small satellites. She also seeks out opportunities to advocate for and represent the aerospace community, recently interning at National Public Radio as a science journalist and advocating before Congress for continued NASA funding. She takes a special interest in encouraging female participation in the aerospace industry as a mentor for the Women in Science and Engineering Residential Program and as a founding member of the first dedicated women in aerospace organization on campus. This past summer, Sandberg interned at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, where she worked on cable harnessing for the 2020 Mars Rover.

Additionally, Sandberg was awarded the Mack Essay Award for her piece “The Battle Cry: Taking Space to Capitol Hill,” published in October 2015 in the U-M Students for the Exploration and Development of Space blog. This annual award, presented by the Michigan Engineering Technical Communication Program, was established by the late William H. Mack to honor engineering students for non-technical writing pieces.

Sandberg’s piece discussed the gap between what engineers know and what the general public knows and believes. She also recounted her Capitol Hill trip with Citizens for Space Exploration, during which she spoke to many members of Congress about these issues.

SANDBERG SELECTED AS A FINALIST IN SMALL SATELLITES STUDENT COMPETITIONAriel Sandberg was selected as a finalist in the AIAA/USU Conference on Small Satellites Student Competition for her paper “Streamlining CubeSat Solar Panel Fabrication Processes.” Sandberg’s paper was chosen from an international competition base by a group of judges from industry, academia, and government based on its scientific merit, industry relevance and clarity of writing. As a finalist, Ariel will receive a monetary prize and present her work during the Small Sat Conference.

Solar panel characterization and assembly is a critical facet of small satellite fabrication. Though capable of producing flight-quality solar subsystems, traditional methods of solar panel fabrication contain intrinsic inefficiencies and in-consistencies that compromise the subsystem’s overall performance. This investigation sought to streamline the solar panel fabrication process to increase its yield, cost effectiveness and con-sistent production. In the short term, this proce-dure, which passed rigorous verification testing, will be implemented on Michigan Exploration Laboratory’s upcoming TBEx satellite mission. In a broader sense, this process, through its improvements to solar panel reliability and manufacturability, contributes to the knowledge base that allows small satellites to be used as meaningful tools of science.

The University of Michigan Athletic Department presented the Big Ten Medal of Honor to its 2015–16 recipients at its annual Student-Athlete Recognition Celebration on April 12th, with senior Mason Ferlic receiving the honor based on his proficiency in scholarship and athletics.

The conference’s most exclusive award was the first of its kind in intercollegiate athletics to recognize academic and athletic excellence. The Big Ten Medal of Honor was first awarded in 1915 to one student-athlete from the graduating class of each university who had “attained the greatest proficiency in athletics and scholastic work.” Big Ten schools currently feature almost 9,500 student-athletes, but only 28 earn this prestigious award on an annual basis. In more than 100 years of the Medal of Honor, almost 1,400 student-athletes have earned this distinction.

Ferlic is the 20th men’s track and field student-athlete at Michigan to receive the honor, with the last being Jack Greenlee in 2013.

Ferlic, an aerospace engineering master’s student, was a USTFCCCA Academic All-American in 2014 and a Capital One Academic All-America second team (2015) and third team (2014) honoree. In 2015, he was named a Big Ten Distinguished Scholar. He has earned

USTFCCCA All-Academic honors during the cross country (2014–15) and track and field seasons (2013–14–15) and has accumulated six total Academic All-Big Ten accolades. On the track, Ferlic is a four-time USTFCCCA All-American, including first team honors in 2016 as a member of Michigan’s first All-America distance medley relay (DMR) team in nearly a decade (2007). Earlier this year, Ferlic ran the anchor leg of the DMR group that broke U-M’s 12-year-old program record long held by the 2004 national champion relay team. He owns a pair of Big Ten titles in the indoor 5,000-meter run (2015–16) and another in the outdoor 3,000-meter steeplechase (2015), to go with six Big Ten Athlete of the Week awards, one national Athlete of the Week accolade, three All-Great Lakes Region honors (2013–14–15) and three All-Big Ten recognitions (first team; 2014–15, second team; 2013). Last fall, he helped the team to its most successful season in nearly 20 years by leading the Wolverines to their first Big Ten Title since 1998 and the program’s first Big Ten Regional title sweep since 1997, led by his individual title at the Great Lakes Regional.

The transition of a boundary layer from laminar to turbulent state bypasses the classical Tollmien-Schlichting path in

the presence of heightened levels of freestream turbulence. Such transition takes place, for example, on the turbine blades of gas-turbine/jet engines, profoundly affecting the heating of the blades by the combustor exhaust gases and therefore the overall efficiency of the engine. The bypass transition process is initiated via the formation of low-speed streaks, which grow in strength with downstream distance and eventually become unstable, leading to the formation of turbulent spots. This presentation describes a systematic series of investigations aimed at evaluating the capability of a plasma-actuator-based, feedforward-feedback control system to weaken streaks induced “synthetically” in a Blasius boundary layer via dynamic roughness elements.

ALUMNUS AIDS IN THE DISCOVERY OF LARGEST KNOWN PRIME NUMBEROn January 7, a network of volunteers rang in the new year by discovering the largest prime number in history, now known as M74,207,281. Although a mouthful in its own right, M74,207,281 is short for 274,207,281-1, a num-ber with 22.3 million digits. The new number was found by members of the Great Internet Mersenne Prime Search (GIMPS) and is over 5 million digits larger than the last prime, which was discovered by GIMPS in 2013. Among these members was Aerospace Engineering alum-nus Ernst Mayer (Ph.D. ’93), whose MLucas software was used to verify the primality of the new Mersenne prime.

Founded in 1996 by George Woltman, GIMPS is a group of mathematics and computer science enthusiasts who use freely available software to try and calculate the largest known primes. Specifically, the group is after a special class of numbers, Mersenne primes, and generates over 450 trillion calculations per second on their quest.

Mersenne primes, named after the French monk who studied them in the 17th century, take the form 2n-1. Though they have been discussed since 300 BC, only 49 primes have been discovered, and GIMPS members have found the most recent 15.

When Mayer stumbled upon GIMPS in the late 1990s, he was an assistant engineering professor at Case Western Reserve University. He found the group while looking for novel ways to teach his students the Fast Fourier Transform algorithm, which the GIMPS software utilizes to multiply massive integers (more on FFT algorithms). Fascinated, he began working on his own code for

testing Mersenne primality. Many years, lessons in C/C++ and assembly programing, and lines of code later, Mayer had developed MLucas, the world’s second fastest Mersenne prime code for Intel x86 computer architecture.

“Being where I am code-wise permits the privilege of being party to the independent verification of any new prime,” Mayer reflected, “and getting here has been a fascinating and dare I say unique learning experience.”

In addition to his work with GIMPS, Mayer researches another class of numbers, Fermat numbers, that take the form 2^(2n) +1. In the late 1990s, he collaborated with Richard Crandall, who developed an algorithm on which the GIMPS software is based, and together they tested the primality of the 24th Fermat number. At the time, this 5 million digit figure was the largest ever subjected to such an extensive test. Mayer is currently trying to improve his code’s basic algorithm so that it may one day test the now-smallest such number of unknown character, the 33rd Fermat number, which has over 2.5 billion digits — over 100 times as many as the new Mersenne prime.

“Given that folks like me…who are not doing nuclear-weapons design, climate modeling or high-frequency stock trading do not get dedicated access to true ‘big iron’ supercomputers, this is of course a major challenge,” Mayer admitted. “Nonetheless, I optimistically estimate that the needed compute power will become available around roughly 2025. In the meantime, there is still lots of coding and number-crunching work to do!”

That there is. Though the new prime was just discovered, the hunt is already underway for the next number. Congratulations to Dr. Ernst Mayer and GIMPS for their incredible accomplishment.

CHEN CHRONICLES FLYING TIGERSAero alum Bill Chen M.S.E. ’61 recently co-authored an article entitled “From Railroad Workers to Flying Tigers: A Legacy of Progress,” paying tribute to three Chinese-Americans who became Flying Tigers under the legendary General Claire Chennault, commander of the 14th Air Force (Flying Tigers) in the China-Burma-India theater during World War II.

The pioneering Chinese railroad workers, who helped to build the transcontinental railroad, would never have envisioned that among their descendants in the 20th century would be fighter and Hump pilots contributing to the victory in World War II. One of those Flying Tigers was Chen’s father, H. Moon Chen, B.S.E. Aero ’32—an airline pilot, U.S. Army Air Corps Hump pilot, airline and aerospace company executive and recipient of a Distinguished Alumni Service Award.

Chen’s article coincided with the celebration of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, nationally designated as the month of May. His own legacy of progress includes having the distinction of being the first Chinese American to wear the rank of major general in the U.S. Army. His Michigan aero education laid the foundation for him to be a leader in Army missiles and missile defense. As a major general, he had two capstone assignments: as the commanding general, U.S. Army Missile Command, Redstone Arsenal, Alabama and as the program executive officer for Missile Defense, in charge of all the Army’s national and theater missile defense programs. He retired from the Army in 1993 after 32 years of active duty and then worked in the defense industry for 18 years.

JENNIFER DUKE AWARDED 2016 AEROSPACE DEPARTMENT MERIT AWARDThe Department of Aerospace Engineering is pleased to announce that Jennifer Duke (B.S.A.E. ’92) has been selected for the Aerospace Engineering Department Merit Award for the 2016–2017 academic year. The award is to recognize a high-impact accomplishment in research, teaching or service benefiting the department and the college.

Duke is the director of aerodynamics at Pratt & Whitney. Duke has been with Pratt & Whitney since 1992 and has held roles of increasing responsibility in the Performance Systems Analysis, Turbine Aerodynamics and Turbine Module Center organizations. She was the performance systems chief for the Operational Commercial Engines group and the executive assistant to Pratt & Whitney’s chief operating officer. Since 2013, she has sat on the industry advisory board for the University of Michigan Aerospace Engineering Department and the advisory board for the University of Connecticut Department of Mechanical Engineering. She received her B.S. degree in aerospace engineering from U-M in 1992.

GE TO SPEND $200 MILLION ON ‘ROCKET CITY’ PLANTS FOR JET-ENGINE SURGEBy Rick CloughSource: Bloomberg

General Electric (GE) plans to build two new factories in Alabama’s “Rocket City” to produce advanced materials for jet engines as the company prepares for a surge in aircraft output later this decade.

The twin plants will be placed in Huntsville, a city with a long history in aerospace manufacturing, and employ 300 people. GE will invest $200 million alongside funding from the U.S. Air Force for the facilities making ceramic matrix composites, which can withstand the lava-like temperatures inside turbines.

“We’re on the way to being 25 to 50 times bigger in supply chain capacity than we were,” said Sanjay Correa, vice president of GE Aviation’s CMC program and a Michigan Engineering aerospace alumnus.

GE, the world’s largest jet-engine maker, is look-ing to keep pace with a record order backlog as the new Leap powerplant is deployed on updat-ed Boeing Co. and Airbus Group SE narrow-body planes. It’s a critical offering for GE, which is betting on the aviation unit and other industrial operations while shedding consumer-focused and lending businesses.

Advanced Materials Advanced materials are central to the Leap’s promised fuel-efficiency gains. A competing engine made by Pratt & Whitney, a unit of United Technologies, relies on gears to boost performance.

The new factories will work in concert to produce what are known as CMCs — durable, lightweight materials that can replace heavier metal parts in the turbine’s hot section. Temperatures inside a jet engine can reach about 2,400 degrees Fahrenheit (1,315 degrees Celsius).

One of the plants will make silicon carbide ceramic fiber. That facility will receive $21.9 million in funding from the Air Force Research Laboratory’s Title III office, GE said, and the Defense Department will be a customer. CMCs will also be used for some gas-turbine parts in GE’s power and water business.

The work is sufficiently complex that it made more sense for Fairfield, Connecticut-based GE to build new plants rather than try to outsource production as engine orders mount, Correa said. The Leap is due to enter service in 2016 and reach annual output of as many as 1,800 engines by 2019.

“We have committed so many resources across the company into this stuff that we were going to have to teach other people or do it ourselves,” Correa said. For GE, “this is very much past the science experiment and engineering marvel, and it’s very much now a production-execution phase.”

FORMER NASA ENGINEER MAKES MILLIONS WITH STEMBOARDBy Lynne D. JohnsonSource: Ebony

For Aisha Bowe, CEO and co-founder of STEMBoard and former aerospace engineer at NASA’s Ames Research Center, starting a tech company in Silicon Valley was a no go. “We went to the Valley to raise money and the reception wasn’t what we had hoped for, so we decided we knew what we wanted to do and that we were going to make it work. I continued to work at NASA for two years until we got the company off the ground,” says Bowe.

The resilience paid off for the co-founders of the innovative tech company who partner with defense and enterprise clients to create smart systems and software solutions. “I’m so happy that we didn’t raise a single dime. I run a profitable, sustainable company that I own 51 percent of outright without any significant debt,” says Bowe.

Here, Bowe—a Michigan Engineering alumna— talks about her path to NASA and founding STEMBoard as well as choosing the government as her source of capital.

EBONY.COM: How did you figure out that you wanted to work in engineering?

Aisha Bowe: I sort of fell into it. I remember being aware that technology was changing very rapidly, but not necessarily thinking I wanted to be part of that shift. When I was in community college, I realized that I had an aptitude for math and I became interested in space and exploration while reading science fiction and novels about deep space, satellites and spaceships. Interestingly NASA has a tagline, “We turn science fiction into fact.” So I was seeing all of this, and when the idea presented itself to choose the path of aerospace engineer, I knew it was something that I would always be excited about. The idea that we’ve perfected cruising at 35,000-plus feet in a pressurized tube boggles my mind. It’s safer than driving. And you now have WiFi and you have TV, and it’s amazing when you think about what went into creating that.

EBONY.COM: How did you end up at NASA?

AB: I was fortunate to be in a program that combined undergraduate and graduate studies.

There was a professor, Thomas Zurbuchen, who had an instrument with NASA called Mercury Messenger. The director of engineering at NASA at the time came to visit my professor, and he asked me to take him on a tour of the campus. When I met the director, it was one of those moments where you know it is meant to be. He asked me why I didn’t submit my resume, and I realized at that moment that I didn’t think I was good enough. He said, “Let me be the judge of that.” Within two weeks, I was offered a position in the intern program.

At that point, I realized I needed to redefine how I think about myself and what’s possible for me, so I started setting really ambitious goals. “I want to be a distinguished employee.” “I want to do this with public service.” “I want to do this with technology and outreach.” So I published papers. I spoke to school groups. I was a recipient of NASA’s Equal Opportunity and Diversity Medal, which is one of NASA’s highest honors given to individuals within government who are champions of diversity and inclusion programs or display those characteristics within the workplace. I was part of the African American advisory group. I created a career shadowing program for students. There are so many talented people out there, but they don’t have the access and exposure that they need to succeed, and I want to help with that.

EBONY.COM: How long were you at NASA?

AB: I was at NASA for six years as a federal employee and then for two years as a contractor. My entire career there, I wanted to advocate for the underserved and underrepresented. Working there as an engineer really changed my life. Besides what it did for me, it even helped me uplift my family and help them do many things.

When we started the company, I continued to work at NASA and signed a work agreement so there was no conflict of interest. It’s been a year now that I’ve been running the company full time and we’ve been a company for three years.

EBONY.COM: What was the journey like from year one to year three?

AB: We have 12 engineers on staff. If we don’t do anything different, we’ll make a minimum of $2 million this year. If we win a fraction of the work that we’re planning to bring in, we’ll earn between $10 and $20 million this year. We’re an incredible force. We were able to ink a three-year deal, where we are incubated out of the Department of Defense. That agreement alone is worth $5 million easily, and we’re in the second year. In terms of our overall growth, going the route where we bootstrapped and

bid on government business, our growth has been phenomenal. Our money isn’t short term. Our contracts are for five years. I know where we stand for five years. The work that we do is diverse: we do hardware, software, frontend and backend. The technologies that we touch are 10 to 20 years ahead of what’s in the commercial sector. While we come up with custom solutions for our government work, we have the flexibility to extend those products for our commercial clients where it makes sense.

EBONY.COM: What’s the difference between governmental funding and VC funding?

AB: Fewer than 1 percent of U.S. companies receive funding from venture funds. The U.S. government has $400 billion a year that it spends on stuff. They have set-aside requirements that are geared toward helping minorities and disadvantaged groups. All of this is considered in the government’s budget from year to year. And so they have organizations that can help African Americans run a business successfully. The reality is that when you deal with the government, they are incentivized to help you and there is money already allocated for you. You can obtain a certification say for being a Women-Owned Small Business, so when you bid on work it makes you eligible to be considered for certain things.

The government puts out announcements asking you to address a problem. And you can respond. With the Small Business Innovative Research Fund, you can take your company from idea to working with the government. You get $100,000 to develop your concept and then you can get more money to turn it into a product. For us, we might get on teams with other capable companies to respond to a proposal or we might create a white paper to show our solution. Every agency has a team of people that can help you with the process. You can also go to FEDBIZOPPS to learn about opportunities. When we talk about VCs, the process is not as straightforward.

One of the things that gets slept on is developing businesses that are sustainable. Our customer is a $100 billion agency and they are going to be around for 10 to 20 years. We’re focused on not going into debt, where as when you’re raising VC funding you’re operating in debt. For us, that’s not appealing. I’d like to empower others to do exactly what I’m doing. They’re talking about how I raised $13 million dollars; I’m saying I made that. We are also scaling across the Caribbean and Africa, and we’re turning into a global company.

We run tech, but we also run education. We want to take the same skills we use to build our

products to turn it into educational content for students. We hired Dr. Jarvis Sulcer, who was the director of education at Level Playing Field in California, to run our education program full time. We teach cybersecurity fundamentals to students at HBCUs on a grant from the government. We are in our third year running a STEM camp in the Caribbean. We created HackIT, where we combine technology with entrepreneurship to offer students a mini incubator to launch their ideas. We want to touch hundreds to thousands of students within the next year. When you raise money from venture, you have to go to a board to decide those things. There’s no board to tell me what we are and are not going to do.

RICHARD AUHLL SETS UP $100,000 CHALLENGE FUND FOR AEROSPACE STUDENTSIn honor of Aero’s centennial year in 2014, alum Richard Auhll challenged fellow alumni and friends to match up to $100,000 for new endowments for Aero student support.

Auhll founded the Circon Corporation and served as chairman of the board, president and CEO for 30 years. Under his direction, Circon grew to be the largest producer of medical endoscopes and color video systems for minimally invasive surgery in the United States.

His time is now dedicated to supporting education at all levels of society, whether it is the PAL Board, the Seton School for Developmentally Disabled Children or the University of Michigan through service on the Department of Aerospace Engineering’s Industrial Advisory Board and support to establish the Richard Auhll Professorship of Biomedical Engineering.

Auhll is a licensed, instrument-rated, solo jet aircraft pilot of his Citation Jet, and divides his time between Santa Barbara and Aspen.

Danny Ellis and Tom Brady completed undergraduate and graduate degrees in aerospace engineering at the University of Michigan between 2010 and 2013, both specializing in aerospace controls. In 2009, they founded the Michigan Autonomous Aerial Vehicles (MAAV) team, which still operates today out of the Wilson Center. MAAV took first place in the International Aerial Robotics Competition in 2012. Taking what they had learned from MAAV about robotics, fundraising and managing a team, Ellis and Brady, with partner Sam DeBruin, founded SkySpecs.

SkySpecs develops autonomy and analytics software to make industrial inspections and other enterprise drone applications safe and easy. The company has raised over $3 million in funding, is backed in part by NSF and is geared up to carry out thousands of wind turbine inspections on multiple continents in 2016. Ellis and Brady have completed the Techarb program, a Techstars Accelerator in New York City, taken first place in the Accelerate Michigan Innovation Competition in 2014 for $500,000 and were recently recognized in Forbes’ 30 under 30 for Manufacturing and Industry.

10th ANNUAL GERARD M. FAETH MEMORIAL LECTURE

Each year, the Faeth family and the Department of Aerospace Engineering coordinate a memorial lecture in honor of Gerard Faeth, who was the Arthur B. Modine Professor of Aerospace Engineering at U-M from 1985 until his sudden passing in 2005. He was an exceptional scholar in the fields of combustion science, heat transfer and aerospace engineering. He served as an editor-in-chief of a major journal in each of his fields: Combustion and Flame, the ASME Journal of Heat Transfer and the AIAA Journal. He was a member of the National Academy of Engineering and a fellow of AIAA, ASME, AAAS and APS. He received the Combustion Institute’s Alfred C. Egerton Gold Medal (2004), NASA Public Service Medal (1999) and ASME Heat Transfer Memorial Award (1988). He was an outstanding teacher, well-respected and appreciated by many students who were fortunate to take classes from him. The 52 Ph.D. students he mentored are now established leaders and active contributors in industry, academia and federal agencies.

The Annual Faeth Memorial Lecture is free and open to the public. A pre-reception and post-ice cream social are also part of this event.

AEROSPACE DAY OUTREACH GROWS!By Rebecca HillSource: U-M Aerospace Engineering

A blimp crosses the finish line in the atrium of the François-Xavier Bagnoud Building, and five students cheer as their time is announced to the to the bystanders: in the end-of-semester competition for their class, they’re currently in first place. Behind them, a stream of middle school students and parents follow their group leaders into the student lounge. Scattered throughout the building are volunteers, just a few of the 90 students who dedicated part of their Saturday to introducing the visiting students to the world of aerospace engineering.

THIS IS AEROSPACE DAY. December 5, 2015 marked the third semester in a row that the University of Michigan aerospace engineering department hosted Aerospace Day. This event is more than just a year and a half old, though: it’s a project a decade in the making.

Aerospace Day has become the department’s biggest outreach event, bringing in young students from across Michigan, but at its core are two introductory aerospace engineering classes. The freshman-level Introduction to Aerospace Engineering (ENGR 100), where students build and race blimps, was first taught ten years ago; the sophomore-level companion class AEROSP 205, where students build and compete with hovercrafts, came about a few years later. Dr. Pete Washabaugh, the professor for both courses, explained that he wanted to provide students with the opportunity to build a complete system early in their academic careers to expose them to the challenges they would face later in industry, so they can make mistakes now instead of on larger projects where lives may be at stake.

Each semester, these two classes culminate in a final competition, giving students, generally in teams of five, the opportunity to present their projects to an audience and compete against other teams. But Washabaugh wanted the final competitions to be bigger than simply an academic exercise. After years of trying to build a partnership between these competitions and student organizations on campus, he finally found the right group: the student branch of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics, or AIAA.

Aerospace Day, built around these two competitions, started in the fall of 2014. It began in part to support the competitions for Washabaugh’s classes, but to its founders Chris Reynolds and Cauê Borlina, both current aerospace engineering seniors, the event meant much more than that.

Reynolds and Borlina wanted to reinvent outreach to make it bigger, spanning more topics and including more students.By the first Aerospace Day, the two-year-old AIAA outreach committee was looking for ways to expand. “The events we started with were exciting with rocket launches and balsa gliders,” said Reynolds, who started the outreach committee when he was a freshman, “but we quickly noticed that it is sort of the same event every time.” Reynolds and Borlina wanted to reinvent outreach to make it bigger, spanning more topics and including more students.

With that, Aerospace Day was born, meant to increase exposure of the two competitions and provide a diverse set of experiences for the visiting students and parents. “Aerospace Day is a showcase of Michigan engineering, specifically aerospace, and how we can be leaders in almost anything we do,” said Reynolds.

This semester, the outreach committee made its mark once again with the largest Aerospace Day yet. More than 500 students, parents and staff filled the Francois-Xavier Bagnoud Building and the neighboring Gorguze Family Laboratory on December 5. These numbers included 120 visiting students, aged 6 to 16, ranging from families in Ann Arbor to engineering clubs as far away as Midland.

Throughout the seven rotations that made up Aerospace Day, these students had the opportunity to learn about student project teams, explore the department’s resources

and build part of a giant blimp — the newest addition to the Aerospace Day activities, giving students the opportunity to contribute to their own engineering project before watching it fly through the FXB atrium at the end of the day. From paper airplane competitions to wind tunnel tours to hovercraft flying, there was never a dull moment; even the lunch break provided a learning opportunity, as students and parents had the chance to speak with Corey Brooker, a Michigan aerospace engineering alum who currently works at Lockheed Martin as the Orion lead systems integration engineer. And, with volunteers stationed throughout the building, there was never a shortage of current students who wanted to share their stories and inspire future Michigan engineers.

“Volunteering for Aerospace Day was a chance to generate excitement in the next generation of engineers and to give back to an incredible place that I’ve been blessed to be a part of,” said Aaron Lu, a sophomore in aerospace engineering. He was part of the team that designed the massive blimp and, along with three other current engineering students, led a team of visiting students through the seven stations.

“Seeing how much the students enjoyed learning about aerospace engineering made it all worth it.”

Lu isn’t alone in this sentiment. Almost universally, he and the other volunteers not only enjoyed working with the visiting students but also wished something like Aerospace Day had existed when they were younger. “I volunteered at Aerospace Day because I knew that this was an event that I would have enjoyed as a middle schooler,” said sophomore Arman Aznavorian.

“Seeing how much the students enjoyed learning about aerospace engineering made it all worth it.”The visiting students and the volunteers weren’t the only ones who had learning experiences that weekend. At the same time that the students were going through the seven rotations, more than 100 freshmen and sophomores were presenting and racing their blimps and hovercrafts. “AEROSP 205 is definitely the highlight of this fall semester,” said Lu, who also participated in the ENGR 100 blimp course last year. “It was a class that pushed my comfort zones…. In the end, it culminated in Aerospace Day which was an incredible day filled with success and failure, excitement and disappointment, but above all there was the incredible feeling of satisfaction and happiness.”

Between the volunteers, student project team representatives and students competing with their blimps and hovercrafts, close to half of the entire aerospace engineering undergraduate student body came out to the FXB on Aerospace Day to share their experiences with the visiting students — a truly incredible testament to the passion and camaraderie these aerospace engineering students feel every day.

Moving forward, the biggest challenge is size: there are more people interested than Aerospace Day, at this point, can handle. This semester, registration filled up a mere 36 hours after it opened in early November. By the end of November, there were an additional 70 students on the waitlist.

As of right now, there isn’t much space in the FXB for the event to grow larger. Next semester, one of the AIAA outreach committee’s primary goals will be expanding Aerospace Day to accommodate more students and increase its impact on prospective engineers.

It’s a good problem to have.

“Looking back to when we did the first one… I cannot feel happier,” said Borlina about how quickly Aerospace Day has grown. “People love to experience engineering and get to know our department.”

IN MEMORIAMCharles William (Bill) KauffmanKauffman, a retired Professor of Aerospace Engineering at the University of Michigan, died on May 25, 2016 at St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. Born in 1939 to Charles and Florence Kauffman, he spent his early years in Waynesboro, PA. He earned Bachelor and Masters degrees in Physics from the Pennsylvania State University and a PhD in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1971. Kauffman taught and did research for six years in the Aerospace Engineering Department at the University of Cincinnati and worked at NASA Lewis Research Center in the summertime. He returned to the University of Michigan in 1977 where he had an active research program in combustion and taught on that topic and aircraft design. His interest in combustion processes led to subsequent work on the causes and prevention of dust explosions that occur in grain elevators, coal mines and manufacturing plants. His investigations of major grain elevator explosions ultimately led to the development of new standards by the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) that reduced dust contamination and subsequent risk of explosions in grain elevators and had a direct bearing on the prevention of explosions related to fine dust particles in other manufacturing processes, such as sugar refining and pharmaceutical production. His extensive international collaborations included helping colleagues in Poland solve problems with dust explosions in the coal mining industry. Kauffman’s knowledge and expertise in aircraft design made him the “go-to” person for local television and radio stations when aircraft disasters occurred. He had the abllity to simplify complex processes and explain how such disasters could happen and how they might be prevented. He worked with the Federal Aviation Administration to prevent fuel-vapor explosions on board aircraft; after retirement, he collaborated frequently with colleagues in the aerospace industry in Russia. Kauffman is survived by his wife, Carol, a professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Michigan Medical School and Chief of the Infectious Diseases Section at the VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System. His brother, Roger, and sister-in-law, Renee, live in Hayden Lake, Idaho. Cremation has taken place, and a memorial tribute to celebrate Kauffman’s life will occur at a later time. Kauffman loved animals, from the many cats he protected and took into his home to the endangered species of sea and land that he worked so hard to save.
