From the Principal’s Desk… Thanks to everyone for their participation in last week’s fun activities for National Literacy and Numeracy Week. Special thanks to Miss Zhang for organising the Mathlympics for Workout Wednesday and Miss Kirk for organizing the Effective Communicators Assembly on Thursday. Last week was also SASS Appreciation Week. The school is extremely fortunate to have so many dedicated, hard-working staff who perform lots of duties “behind the scenes” to ensure the seamless daily running of the school. Thank you to: Our office staff – Karen, Jodie, Brigid & Lynnette The SLSOs – Annette, Lita, Irene & Laurence and our GA – John.
A tour was organized last week for interested parents to view the new building under construction. Thank you to the 10 people who took advantage of this opportunity. Feedback from the group was all positive and they are very excited about the progress and scale of the new facilities. At last week’s P&C meeting, the school began conversations/discussion with the school community about future enrolments, boundary changes and the impact on school programs for 2017. As a result, the school values community input and is reviewing the enrolment policy and is seeking parent/carers representatives to assist with the process.
If you are interested in being part of the policy reviews, please email me asap:
[email protected] Due to the overwhelming response by children willing to join the chess club, under the coaching of Nye, the numbers will need to be capped for Term 4 and plans are being made to reschedule the club’s timeslot to before school. More information will be sent home updating everyone on changes to the chess club for Term 4. On Friday the school welcomed back Mrs Ghunaim after being on leave all year. She was very pleased to see everyone and was overwhelmed by the changes that have happened so quickly at Bourke St PS in less than a year. Everyone was enthusiastic to hear her exciting news that she will be expecting an addition to her family very soon. Peter Johnston Principal ----------------------------------------------------------------------- Chess News Well done to the BSPS Chess Team who came 9th in the NSW State Interschool Semi Finals on the 24th of August. TUNING IN TO KIDS:
EMOTIONALLY INTELLIGENT PARENTING Dear Parent/Carer
You are invited to join a parenting program that could make a positive difference to your child’s
development. Tuning In To Kids is six-week group program for parents. It can help you to
teach your child the skills of emotional intelligence. This letter is to give you some information
about what the group is about.
What is Emotional Intelligence?
Emotional Intelligence is about using your emotions to guide you through the world. It is about
being able to use your knowledge of emotions to make decisions, to calm yourself down, to
manage anger and conflict, to help you in your relationships with people, to understand what is
happening in social situations, and to assist you in any aspects of life that involves you and
another person.
Why is Emotional Intelligence important?
Children with greater emotional intelligence have been shown to:
have greater success with making friendships and be more able to manage conflict with peers
have better concentration, which means they are more likely to be successful academically
be more able to self soothe when upset or angry
tend to have fewer childhood illnesses
have more stable and satisfying relationships as adults; and
have greater career success ... emotional intelligence may be a better predictor of academic and career success than IQ!
When parents focus on helping their child learn about emotions, the child is more likely to have
higher emotional intelligence. In this parenting program we will teach parents what to do to help
these skills develop.
Program details
The program will run for six weeks for two hours at a time and presented by Rachael Spitzer Program Facilitator. It will be held at Bourke Street Public School in Term 4.
If you would like to participate in the workshops, an “Expression Of Interest”, please complete
the attached form and return to Bourke Street Public School by Friday 9th September 2016.
We look forward to hearing from you.
Kind Regards,
Peter Johnston Principal
