You, the members, are the most important part of our Association,

Dear Members This is my first report to you after the change of committee at the Queensland Conference and AGM. It was a wonderful experience with a great program and entertainment. As this edition of Bowen News is so full I will keep this first address as short as possible. I follow Cathy Butlin, who has been carrying an amazing work load for a long time; as State President in SA and National President for the BTFA for a number of years, as well as doing Admin2 work in the last few months. Her legacy has culminated in the Association being in extremely good shape; now she deserves time with her family and regaining some normality in her life. Thank you Cathy, your shoes will be difficult to fill! Cathy will have a lower profile now as Admin2, taking on the CPE financial processes among other things, as we move into the ONB, i.e. as the State bodies de-register and come under the BTFA banner. Cathy is still a great mentor and ongoing support to me and the new committee. With the new committee of BTFA, I will be part of the process enabling all the States to achieve the goals set in motion by the ONB. One major improvement this year is the introduction of a computer based accounting system

that will enable monthly reconciliation to take place and a comprehensive audit at the end of the year. Each State will have its own records to show their available income and expenditure as they de-register – mostly used for CPE purposes. This was a concern for some members, but is proving efficient, accurate and easy to

record. Like all committee members before, we will use our expertise and efforts on the current and

future demands and requirements expected for our Association. You, the members, are the most important part of our Association, so as we ‘learn the ropes’ and face challenges, please be reassured we will do the best possible job we can for you. With the invaluable assistance of Cathy Butlin and our National Admin, Gladys Arnold supporting our efforts, the year ahead will be busy, but rewarding, so I thank them in advance. May you and your loved ones have a safe and Happy Christmas period and a Prosperous New Year! Steve Payne-Ross, President

I am very pleased and excited to report that the implementation of the last major planned tasks, the hosted databases, has been completed.

24th October 2011

The databases loaded onto the Virtual Private Server (VPS) in a data centre located in Melbourne have been undergoing extensive testing during October. The testing was completed on 23rd October and I approved the use of the databases for BTFA business from 24th October. This was certainly the realisation of a long held dream and completes the last stage of providing authorised access to BTFA membership and financial information independent of where the officers and staff are geographically located. This is important to provide the needed flexibility to the BTFA organisation into the future.

Local Printers

One of the surprises in obtaining full functionality from the VPS was enabling printing to be done at the BTFA administration locations (Gladys Arnold and Cathy Butlin) just as if they were using their local computers. This involved resolving technical issues with the VPS by Web24, our hosting company as well as us installing software for our printers on the VPS. The surprise was that not all printers have software which enables them to work in conjunction with the VPS. Fortunately the BTFA National Office (Gladys Arnold) printer is compatible. However we need a suitable compatible colour business class printer to be purchased for Admin2 position (currently Cathy Butlin). The cost will be approximately $400.

Administration

The administrative activities for the second admin position (presently Cathy Butlin) are quickly ramping up now as BTANSW & ACT, BTAV and BTAQ State Associations are preparing to windup and the first CPE registrations for South Australia are being received and processed. Also the new certificates for members transferring to BTFA membership need to be progressively prepared, printed and posted. This represents a busy time with a significant amount of ‘one off’ activities to get the foundation administration work completed. These activities need to be documented – an important task which cannot be overlooked or delayed.

Where to from now?

Reviewing the brief of the BTFA President (Cathy Butlin 2009)

The Role of the Steering Committee

To look at the feasibility of a One National Body for our Association members instead of the current system of the BTFA as an umbrella organisation.

To put together a feasible time line of events for the outcome of such an event.

To look at all the legal and financial ramifications, and

if possible, offer solutions towards overcoming any obstacles in implementing the One National Body. Legal and other expert advice to be sought!

To ultimately put together some models to present to the BTFA committee for their consideration while taking into account the concerns and needs of the committee and the BTFA, along with the legal, financial and any other matters

To report back on a regular basis and be accountable to the BTFA committee.

In reviewing the task the ONB Steering Committee was given, the structure which it has recommended and is now significantly implemented, I conclude that the work of the ONB Steering Committee has now finished. The administrative tasks within the new structure will require fine tuning as new tasks are identified through ongoing experience with the new structure. Accordingly I thank the BTFA for the opportunity to assist in bringing the dream of a One National Body to a reality and thank the members of my Committee for their work and support over the past two years.

Barry Samels Chairman

The BTFA Council of schools subcommittee is formed by the principles of each of the BTFA recognised Bowen Therapy colleges or schools in Australia (and a BTFA committee representative). These people meet at least once a year (or more often when required) to discuss training options in Bowen Therapy. They consider any proposal for training in Bowen Therapy put forward to the BTFA for recognition as suitable Bowen training for members. This peer review process enables all of the schools to have their say on proposed course material, and to ensure that it meets the high standards required by the BTFA committee. The CoS members continually monitor the standard of the Bowen Therapy manuals and material presented by the co-members of the committee. If a school or college changes more than 20% of the information delivered to the students within its course material, it is required to present all of its course content to the CoS for review. This review usually takes place at the BTFA annual conference (but can be done whenever necessary) where the CoS members peruse the material presented by any particular school. Members also review information put forward by member schools for the purpose of CPE.

Any decisions made by the CoS committee are put forward as recommendations to the BTFA committee for their consideration. This peer review and recommendation process and committee decision-making ensures a high standard of the course material is presented to students in Bowen Therapy via the BTFA recognised schools. The CoS always carefully considers the future of Bowen Therapy when making their decision. The transition from the very basic training that was available when the BTFA was formed in 1998, to the higher standards of the Certificate IV in Bowen Therapy, and the very high standards of the current Diploma of Bowen Therapy and the Advanced Diploma of Bowen Therapy have all been achieved through the negotiations between the BTFA CoS and the BTFA committee. The CoS committee members play a very important role in ensuring the standards of Bowen Therapy are maintained or indeed improved by the use of peer review at the highest possible level, the principals of the colleges or schools.

I would like to thank all our members who have contributed in no small way during this year

Dear Fellow Victorians, As I write this it is the last day of October we are awaiting the outcome of the vote to wind up our State. By the time you read this the vote will be over. I have no doubt that this time around we will have a positive outcome and we will be well under way to becoming part of the Federation. I would like to thank all those who have been involved in this process both at the National and State levels. It had been a time consuming and at times frustrating process. We have learnt much and have grown with the process. Please check our State Newsletter for more up to date information. Our Education guru, Sharon Hopkins, is hard at work organising more items of interest to educate and entertain us though out 2012. If anyone has an item to suggest or the name of a person who could speak, Sharon would be interested to hear from you. Contact Sharon on 93708777. It can be a hard task to be one person finding varied education items and many hands make light work. We are also looking for suggestions from our country members of ways in which we can help with their education. Please don’t be shy in putting forward your requests. If you don’t ask we can’t help. Are you aware of a particular event that could promote Bowen to the wider public? Suggestions please from one and all. We can get together and see how to make this possible. Volunteer opportunities are a good way of publicising Bowen, John Curtis and I have volunteered at the Police

and Emergency Service Games over the last 10 years and have used Bowen to great effect, if anyone is interested in this please contact either of us as we will be again looking for volunteers/ promoters of this wonderful modality. Again more information will be in the State Newsletter. On the subject of the State newsletter, Olive Lane our skilled editor, is always on the lookout for items of interest to publish. Call her on 0408960920. We would like case studies either positive

or not, put up your cases. However they must be Bowen content only. If you are having a problem

resolving a clients issue write in and let the wider Bowen Community know, someone else may have had the same issues and found a resolution. Finally, I would like to thank all our members who have contributed in no small way during this year with their presentations, attendance and offers of help at Education Days, their freely sharing of information and all the co-operation we have received, bouquets to your all. May 2012 be an even more positive time of re-connecting, sharing and growing. May your Festive season be joyful, safe and rejuvenating. May 2012 be bountiful in every way. Sept 16th

Nov 11th. As at writing this we have not booked speakers for these dates but will advise you all via email as to what is happening closer to the dates. If there is anything you would like us to present or have any ideas please contact me, I do appreciate the ideas. I would love to introduce part of the day with a real client on the table and all attendees discussing what they see as the issue and discussing the solution. Enjoy thinking about this and we can talk further when I see you on the 20/11/11.

MEMBERS. As you should be well aware by now that the BTAV is being dissolved and we will all be under the membership of the BTFA. Please do not feel like you are being abandoned at a State level, as we will still have a small subcommittee volunteering their time to organise such things as Education days etc. This will continue to provide an avenue for our Victorian members to achieve their required CPE points at a reasonable price, and hopefully allowing them to gain more knowledge and wisdom. Once the BTAV is dissolved and we operate as “One Body” under the BTFA, all CPE days may be booked and paid for online through the BTFA website, but we will keep you informed on this, until then please feel free to contact me regarding anything to do with Education Days. Many Thanks Sharon Hopkins 0416 494 476 Email: [email protected]

On Friday 12th of August, Ron Phelan, founder of the Tom Bowen Legacy Trust Fund, came all the way from Geelong, Australia to The Kings Centre in Leicester to present a swing to a 12 year old local boy, Amer Singh. The Leicester Children’s Bowen Clinic knew that Amer needed vestibular stimulation to improve his balance and successfully applied to the Trust Fund on his behalf. Amer will now get the stimulation he needs in a fun way, with a sturdy garden swing. Amer has attended the Leicester Children’s Bowen Clinic for the past three years where Bowen therapy has helped to improve his walking ability a great deal. However, he now needs further help to improve his balance. The therapists at the clinic knew of The Tom Bowen Legacy Fund, which is well established in Australia and has just this year started in the UK. They applied to the fund for a swing on Amer’s behalf, as recommended by his occupational therapist. The swing will help Amer to improve his balance and agility whilst providing him with some well deserved fun. The Leicester Children’s Bowen Clinic is one of a network of 36 not for profit children’s’ clinics around the country run by BTPA (Bowen Therapy professional Association) members. The therapists give their time free of charge and are run either free or for a small donation to cover running costs and enable many hundreds of families to bring children for treatment of a wide range of conditions from bed wetting to cerebral palsy. Bowen is a simple technique which encourages the body’s own healing processes. It was founded by the Australian, Tom Bowen who used it to successfully treat people for a wide range of muscular skeletal conditions from the 1950’s through to his death in the

1980’s. He found it to be particularly effective for children as it is so gentle. In 2003, the Tom Bowen Legacy Trust Fund was established in his honour. Ron Phelan has this year brought the Tom Bowen Legacy Trust Fund to the UK where it is being run by Bowen therapists David and Birgitte Howells. David Howells says “The presentation has been a way to support Amer’s occupational therapy. The use of this equipment stimulates the body’s natural responses and that is also what is being done with the Bowen Technique. We are hoping that the presentation of equipment like this will become a regular annual event.” All money held by the charity is raised by Bowen trained therapists to purchase electronic

communication or mobility equipment to improve the quality of children’s lives. In the UK BTPA members have donated over £300 so far since March and it is this money that has been used to purchase the swing

Susan Chattaway has asked me to put together some information on how CPE training days will work once the States are deregistered and State members have transferred to the BTFA. As BTASA was the first State to deregister, I would like to share with you on how we, the BTASA committee, set up CPE days for our members. We were lucky enough to have been using a large centrally based community centre over the last few years. Deb (Hart) and I had always booked the room 12 months ahead, and we ran SA CPE training days every 2 months. The committee organised guest speakers, training, first aid and other appropriate training for members, and including a ‘subway’ lunch, morning tea and room hire, the cost was around $20 per head per day, a cheap way to assist our members to gain CPE points. The committee discussed how best to manage these days once it became a BTFA event and it was decided that we would book and pay for the use of the room until the end of 2012. Our hope was that if we set up as much as possible prior to deregistration, it would allow for continuity for our members and the CPE events that had become essential for many of those members.

In March, SA deregistered at our final AGM and Conference. At that time we had our CPE days organised until the end of 2011 and the room had been booked and paid for, with a small committee of volunteers to open/shut up the venue and pick up lunches. These volunteers are spearheaded by Deb and are happy to take on the occasional role of coordinator for events. It appears that as there is no requirement to have an official committee, members are only too happy to “help out”! As Admin2, I am now responsible for organising finances for the CPE days run by the volunteer groups in deregistered States. For those groups organising a CPE event for their States, there is a form available so that I have notification and can forward advertising to State members. My role as Admin2 is to make sure that the venue, guest speakers, lunches; is paid for and that members payments are processed. This funding comes from the amounts preserved for each State in the BTFA bank account. Remittance Forms can be found in the members State pages or by ringing me on 0427 518 537 or by emailing [email protected]. If you have any queries, please feel free to ring me or email me. Kind regards, Cathy Butlin, Admin2

In approximately 1998 shortly after the SA Association began; a group of Bowen therapists rallied together to form an Association for the ACT and region because there was no NSW Association. As a result the process was initiated and the ACT & Region Association commenced. John Ison became the first President and together with several dedicated therapists the Association was up and running. Several years later for a variety of reasons mainly membership numbers the ACT & Region Association folded. In 1999 State Associations of SA, Vic, WA, ACT & Region and Qld were up and running. NSW was the last of the State Associations to be incorporated and has remained the smallest in number. We began with 5 members. The First meeting at the Centre

Randwick October 1999

Pat Piper instigated and worked toward developing the new Association. The preliminary meeting was advertised and held at Randwick in Sydney. The

first committee was Pat Piper, Liz Thornton and Joan Orsmond. We had a chairperson, secretary and treasurer! First Committee 1999-2002

Pam Geering the then President of ACT & Region travelled from Canberra to support the developments. Hence the foundation was set for the close connection between the two Associations.

We adopted our constitution from the SA format under the guidance of Brian Smart, the then Chair of SA and the BTFA. Our meetings were held by phone and it was later disclosed that there was usually a bottle of wine shared at the Sydney location by the first secretary and treasurer. Our AGMs were held in Sydney, Canberra and the neutral ground of Bowral. In 2002 NSW and QLD co hosted the BTFA conference in Coolangatta. Pat Piper and Leo Camm worked very closely together to bring this about. So much so that even today Pat’s husband Allan says the regular phone conversations were used for a ‘get out of the washing up card’. When the ACT association closed and joined the NSW Association we became BTANSW&ACT. Membership grew quickly and the ACT members took on many of the executive roles. Pam Geering became chairperson and Di Krebs was membership secretary for a long period, during which time many modifications were made and many hours devoted to the job at hand. Sandra Freshwater was also an excellent

secretary at the time, assisting with the many legal documents, like upgrading the constitution to fit the new training requirements. The office

The office appears very ordinary and unassuming but believe me this is where many an idea came to fruition. It was handed on faithfully in this manner from Joan Orsmond to Sandra Freshwater, Sonia Barton, a short time to

Sandy Borgeest and finally Pat Piper and is now safely tucked away at Tura Beach (retirement). Much was achieved; a new Constitution was developed and adopted. Statistics were held and records kept.

Banner

A new Logo was developed combining both state flowers, the Waratah and Bluebell with much assistance from Rosemary Taylor one of

our hard working treasurers. Our meetings continued to be held by phone ‘conference calling’ which proved very successful. Small groups would meet in each area. It did come to light though that Canberra continued the tradition of a wee drop of wine following or was it coffee!!!!! Pat drew the short straw always on her own so we are not sure what sustained her and she is not telling. We have always had an enthusiastic committee willing to meet the challenges. We may have been small in number, but we have more than made up through the many new and innovative ideas put forward on a regular basis, which at times were accepted and taken on board by the BTFA. One very relevant proposal being the formation of the now ONB! Committee 2002 - 2003

We were very fortunate to have some excellent treasurers as well, commencing with Liz Thornton, Gloria Fane, Rosemary

Taylor, Suzie Williams and finally our very competent Marisa Swifte. They held us in good stead despite our small numbers. In addition during the past 12 years our members have

supported many charities; The Carer’s Association Day, Cancer Fun Run, Dragon Boat Race to name a few. With our membership and committee being spread from Tweed heads,

Sydney and Canberra this has been quite an achievement. In 2004 NSW&ACT hosted the BTFA Conference at Rydges Lakeside in Canberra. In 2008 we returned to The Centre at Randwick Sydney for our AGM.

A decision was made that the AGM in 2009 be an opportunity to come together and celebrate our 10

Cutting the Cake!!

Fun and work at the AGM 2009 at the Hartzer Park in Bowral

1 11

Huge result 2009 AGM was the first truly successful meeting with our best numbers ever at Bowral. We made it a weekend for

the first time. And Pat’s dream was fulfilled with great celebrations over two days for our 10th Anniversary.

Throughout the weekend many talented speakers some from within our own ranks shared their expertise. And the celebrations concluded with Lunch on Sunday and a beautiful chocolate mud cake decorated especially for the occasion

In the early days training for our therapy was very basic usually 3 to 4 days. We were not recognised by health funds and people knew very little about Bowen Therapy. Many of our therapists trained and developed their skills in other modalities to gain recognition. Well mum look at us now. Our therapy has come a long way due the dedication foresight and hard work of many people over the years. And we all owe them a great debt for the many voluntary hours given without expectation at both State and National level. Many talented people kept working towards improving the entire Association. As in all states some members also worked very hard on the BTFA committee and in recent years Sonia and Keryn made their contributions in the difficult times of forming the ONB. Pat also worked on the ONB steering committee with the tireless worker and chair Barry Samels. In 2010 our last AGM was held in conjunction with the National Conference at Bowral. Looks like we are going out with a big bang!!!

BTFA Representatives for South Australia are:

Hi All, Well, there goes 2011! It has been an eventful year for the BTASA but hopefully the transition to direct membership of the BTFA has been seamless from your perspective. With all the same benefits of membership and the provision of easy ways to accrue CPE points the SA CPE Team are ensuring that the changes are barely noticeable! Many have asked me if Maggie Lindop will be presenting Happy Feet again in Adelaide. She had said that she would be pleased to come again next year if there are enough people interested. If you would like Maggie to come back please email her on [email protected] and register your interest. We still have a couple of bundles of the current BTFA brochures and a few of the old ones. Bundles of 115 are available for $15 plus postage & packaging or you can pick some up at our CPE Days. It was disappointing to have to cancel the CPE Day on September 11

th but with only

5 registrations it simply was not viable to run the day. Unfortunately a few people rang me the week before to book in. Due to the changes in administration we absolutely must close all registrations by the date specified and cannot accept bookings during the week before the event. Bookings do also need to be made through the CPE Registration Line, details are below. We will not be running the Senior First Aid Refresher at Enfield Community Centre, instead we are directing members to contact our training provider State Training Services on 1300 766 086 to update their certificate as required. Their venue is at Marleston and they are constantly running courses. Let them know you are an SA Bowen Therapist and they will look after you. 2012 CPE Dates are booked for Sunday March 18

, Sunday July 15th

, Sunday September 16th

and Sunday November 18

th and we are lining up some great

speakers. We will be in the Hall at the Enfield Community Centre, 540 Regency Rd, Broadview starting at 9am sharp and finishing at 4pm. The cost of our CPE Days remains at $20 if paid 2 weeks in advance or $30 for bookings 1 week in advance. No bookings will be accepted during the week before the event.

Sunday March 18th

2012 9am-12 noon Helen Stevenson – Food as Medicine Helen is an herbalist, naturopath and nutritionist practising in the Adelaide Hills. She is passionate about using commonly available products as medicines. This workshop will introduce you to the use of foods as medicines, and to the use of products commonly found in the kitchen cupboard. Did you know you can reduce the incidence and severity of gout attacks by simply eating more cherries? Do you know what are common anti-inflammatory foods? What products in the kitchen cupboard help relieve arthritis? How do you help reduce coughs? These questions and more will be answered at this workshop. From 12 – 1pm we break for lunch and share a platter of Subway. If you do have individual dietary needs it is

appreciated if you let us know when booking and bring your own lunch.

1pm – 4pm Peter Fulwood - Patient Stance and Movement Patterns

Peter is a long standing and well respected member of the SA Bowen Therapy community. His workshop will focus on looking outside the square and assessing what our clients bodies are really saying through stance and posture as they accept their pain patterns as the ‘norm’. His

particular interest is in problems and pain that do not resolve after a few treatments. If you or a client has a particular problem and they are happy to be part of the presentation please let me know and we will make sure

Peter gets to work on them so we can all benefit from the experience. Peter has also developed some successful moves for lower back and shoulders and is pleased to share his insights. Coordinator - Deb Hart - Registrations close March 9

In future we will be placing CPE information for each State and hopefully any feedback and articles from each State once they have de-registered. This is YOUR magazine and we will be relying on you for input (from your State) to make it informative and interesting. Write to me with your ideas ~ what do you want to read about? If I don’t hear from you, then it will up to my imagination! The Editor

HORMONAL RELEASE the BOWEN WAY

This brilliant work by the late Trevor Rose will enable you to lift your Bowen to greater heights. I first undertook his course in 2007 and was very privileged to spend time with Trevor just prior to his untimely death in February.

The main part of the course is based on menopause and you will be able to successfully treat: ● Menopause ● Period Pain ● Endometriosis ● Vaginal Dryness ● Fertility ● Pregnancy ● Birthing ● Infant procedures ● Libido in Female and Males ● Enlarged Prostate ● Bladder control

The results from those who have already learnt Hormonal Release are fantastic. It has been wonderful to see so many successful outcomes achieved for people following their hormonal treatments

A little about your presenter: I, Lynda Harris have been on the Sunshine Coast since 1995 as a Registered Training Organisation and a Registered Provider of Massage, Myopractic and other Bowen Therapies.

Investment for the workshop: $ 425 with provision for early payment $ 375

Melbourne Saturday 11th & Sunday 12th February 2012 Adelaide Saturday 18th & Sunday 19th February 2012 Townsville Rockhampton Western Australia OR YOUR AREA????

For further details and registration form please call LYNDA HARRIS on 0405 059 802 or 0427 777 722

PS….. A word from Christine Hayman, who graciously coordinated the Rockhampton workshop for me and I quote “That is the best money I ever spent on a workshop”. Isn’t she wonderful??????

Hi There all Members This is the first of many Presidents reports, and as I am new at this bear with me. Welcome to all the other new committee members also. Like me I am sure they will be taking baby steps as we feel our way through the maze of rules, regulations and commitments over the next year. Just a few things! Take the time to write the date of our conference in your 2012 diary, it will be held at the Perth Novotel. Perth is a great place to visit, just ask all the CHOGM dignitaries. Must be a great place if we can get the Queen to visit! It would be great if interstate members could set aside this weekend and have a fantastic holiday in Perth and the surrounding area while you are here. Just because we

are a long way from the rest of Australia, doesn’t mean we don’t have a wealth of beautiful places to visit and know how to put on a great conference with some amazing guest speakers. Also put in your diary the date for the Xmas get together on December 4th, at 4pm. It’s a great time to catch up with everyone, do some networking have a drink or two or three. Looking forward to that, so see you all there Cheers!! Beverley Nota President

Dear Editor I am so looking forward to becoming a member of the new

National Body, and can hardly wait for all the necessary

paperwork to be finalised by the joining states! Please can

you tell me if I will need to "register" with the new body now

that I will be an individual member of that body - and if so,

how do I do that, and when? Also will there be a new

publication of the manual and regulations governing the new

National Body, and when will we receive our copies? In excited anticipation

Tasmania Thank you so much for your question. It’s all good news. In order to

keep things straight forward for our members, as each State de-registers

each person automatically becomes a member of the BTFA, so you do

not need to do anything. To keep costs to a minimum for members, you

can access the Constitution and the Regulations on the BTFA member

website. Each member will receive a new Certificate of Registration as

soon as possible. The Editor

Thanks for the CPE points made easy. Could you please send me a blank

Thank you to all the members that have volunteered in various roles throughout the years of BTAQ, we are indebted to you

Greetings Queensland members, Sunday 23rd of October was an historic day for QLD as a special resolution was accepted unanimously, to wind up BTAQ. It was a day where we reminisced about the past and planned for the future. On that day, Jeannie Brown, a member of the original BTAQ committee, spoke passionately about a shared vision to create an association for Queensland that supported Bowen Therapists. They were creative thinkers who cleverly found ways to advertise and gather members. They were hard workers who did business without email and the many technology conveniences we are now accustomed to, and take for granted. Our gratitude is extended to Jeannie for preparing this trip down memory lane, but also for her passion and dedication, and that of her founding colleagues, in supporting Queensland Bowen Therapists. Following the meeting was a discussion that generated ideas about how we continue to support Queensland. Many members volunteered to form a group that will meet informally. Our vision is to :

Promote Bowen Therapy

Support students/practitioners/

therapists

Provide networking opportunities

Plan for professional learning

opportunities and

Grow our members. Heidi Degen and Rosemary Toohey will represent members on the BTFA committee and continue to write articles for the Bowen News. Qld members will continue to be kept informed of events via emails from either Rosemary or Heidi. Our special guest was Heather Edmonds who spoke passionately about her father Tom Bowen, sharing beautiful and sometimes funny stories from her childhood.

Heather shared the challenges of being the daughter of a man more famous in death than in life, and also the ever present task of ensuring that her father’s work continues to be shared and honoured with integrity. We feel very blessed that she accepted the invitation to join us on this momentous occasion and know that all present left with new found knowledge about the founder of the therapy we share each

day. We honour him and celebrate in gratitude that he had a vision for

healing and a passion for developing a therapy to help his fellow man. Finally, the Queensland committee thank you for your support throughout the year. We feel a great sense of accomplishment in 2011. Much has been achieved with shared vision, hard work, great determination and energy. Thank you to all the members that have volunteered in various roles throughout the years of BTAQ, we are indebted to you. Your contribution to supporting others in their work is one of the greatest gifts you can share. Together we have made a difference and together will continue to make a difference in the lives of many. Continue to ‘Expand the Vision of Bowen’, not just for Queensland but for Australia, as we move towards membership of The Bowen Therapists Federation of Australia. Never underestimate what you do every day when you share your gift. Warm Regards The outgoing BTAQ Committee

Thank you to all the wonderful and experienced people I have had the pleasure to work with

Hello to everyone At a state level our work load has been less demanding following our decision to accept the creation of One National Body (ONB). The process of formally closing our State Association so as to become members of BTFA is in the final stages. All documentation necessary for winding up the BTANSW/ACT and transferring the funds to the BTFA have been submitted to the Registry of Cooperatives & Associations to be reviewed. The procedure is continuing and if all goes according to plan it should be final in a matter of days. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the committee members who have stayed on during this time of transition. And a special thanks to Marisa Swifte and Pat Piper. We still need someone to co-ordinate CPE within the State. Pat Piper is happy to co-ordinate Northern NSW and Gold Coast and Canberra as her travels take her to these areas. An organiser will be sent necessary forms and details including a list of paid up attendees and support from BTFA. This process has been put in place and is ready to commence. This definitely is my final Chairperson’s report, so to conclude Pat and I have tried to put together a brief history of our Association. If I have missed anyone’s contribution I am truly sorry.

To that end I thank all our committee members over the years. I did do a little reminiscing putting the history together. The past 12 plus years has been a wonderful journey and learning

opportunity for me personally. Thank you to all the wonderful and experienced people I have had the pleasure to

work with, in that time. You have taught me a great deal but mostly you have offered your friendship and it has been through this friendship much has been achieved for the benefit of our modality Bowen Therapy and membership, namely professionalism. For Pat Piper it has been a wonderful journey with many friends made and much learnt. I look forward to continuing to see all friends at the Conferences and wherever we may go. This will be our last hoorah; thank you and many blessings. Remember be kind to yourself, play a little and receive a Bowen treatment. Shalom. Pam Geering

Thomas Ambrose Bowen 18.4.1916– 27.10.1982 As promised, this conference is about a journey, from Bowen’s humble beginnings to where we are now. In order to have a clear vision and move forward with integrity, it is important to remember where we have come from, and honour the man that first planted the seed of an idea. In cherishing the past, we can embrace the future. To do this, I endeavour to present only a very brief overview of the Bowen story. In the 1940’s– 1950’s, Tom spent time with Ernie Saunders – “a legendary manipulator” – and others. He developed his own technique due to his exceptional observational and palpation skills. His intuitive healing skills became apparent. It is important to remember that he was never formally taught – Tom Bowen had no formal qualifications. In 1959, Tom approached the Department of Health, asking permission to register to practice his therapy. In his own words.......“They did not care what I called myself as long as it was not a physiotherapist”. So he called himself an osteopath. We suggest that he should now be called “The First Bowen Therapist”. He never saw his work as a finite modality – but rather as a work in progress. At this point we ask you all to consider an Oscar Wilde quote, which reads:

“Education is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing worth

knowing can be taught”. Many assume today – not always accurately – that ANYTHING worth knowing HAS to be taught. We challenge this notion, based on the experiences of the past. In the 1960’s-1980’s we saw a sharing of knowledge amongst six men who have affectionately become known as “Tom’s Boys”. These men were Oswald Rensch, Nigel Love, Kevin Neave, Keith Davis, Romney Smeeton and Kevin Ryan. Each one brought their individual skills and knowledge over a period of many years, to a constantly evolving “Bowen” technique. All good things must come to an end, and in 1982, Tom passed away. To honour the seed planted in Geelong, The Tom Bowen Memorial was erected in 2002 to mark the 20th year of his passing. The Memorial shows Tom’s healing hands, cradling an open sphere which represents the worldwide acceptance and practice of his technique, the resting head of the client, and the six “boys”. So, how did we come to be “Expanding the Vision of Bowen” - Bowen the Man, and Bowen the Therapy?

In 1986, after 10 years of utilising Tom’s methods in his clinic with his wife Elaine, Ossie Rensch commenced teaching the Bowen Technique. He formalised the tuition and developed the techniques. In 1987 they established the Bowen Therapy Academy of Australia, and were the first to teach it overseas in the 1990’s. Bowtech is now taught in over 30 countries worldwide, many of which have their own training academies and associations. As practitioners and recipients of Bowen Therapy, we owe them a debt of gratitude for being the inspired initiators who took Bowen Therapy to the world. From 1987 – 2000, significant and skilled individuals expanded their vision of Bowen in Australia. Our apologies to anyone who is not on the list. Many are in this room today. We also owe these people a debt of gratitude. Without them, most of us wouldn’t be in practice!

Ross Emmett TBT (Tom Bowen Technique)

Meanwhile, from 1988-2001, an International Expansion of Bowen Therapy was occurring and some in Australia were unaware of what was happening. Overseas, most practitioners were originally Bowtech trained, but by bringing their individual talents to the technique they questioned, practiced, researched and value added...and the result is now a number of international schools of Bowen Therapy, each with their own application.

Michael Nixon-Livy - Neurostructural Integration Technique, France

Milton Albrecht - First Bowtech trained practitioner outside Australia, he went on to found Bowen Therapy International USA

Gene Dobkin - Neural Touch USA, Bowen Bridge Class USA 1992 First taught in Canada

Brazil Ireland Spain

Bulgaria Israel Slovenia

Canada Italy Sweden

Czechoslovakia Netherlands Switzerland

China New Zealand United Kingdom

Cyprus Norway USA

Denmark Philippines Zambia

France Poland Zimbabwe

Germany Portugal Romania

Greece From little things, big things grow...... We started with Tom Bowen, followed by six fortunate, qualified, visionary men in Geelong, Victoria...... 50 years on, we have 35,000 fortunate, qualified, visionary practitioners in 37 countries around the world...... In expanding the Vision, we know that Tom did not wake up one morning “inspired” with the Bowen Technique as we know it. All those who spent any time with Tom were exposed to the originator of an evolving technique, but along a timeline of many years – changing, developing, learning, discarding, improving and searching. It is not surprising therefore, that others have interpreted Tom’s work differently, influenced by their individual skills and backgrounds. The Bowen World is rich, colourful, multicultural, different, innovative and challenging.........but one fact is indisputable..... all those who receive it, say IT WORKS! In looking at the future of Bowen, we admit that we have always known that Bowen Therapy works, but we

didn’t really know why. Well, now we do! Current Fascial Research, much of it being conducted overseas, is now providing that “why”. Researchers like Dr Robert Schleip, from the Fascia Research Project, Division of Neurophysiology, University of Ulm, Germany, and Christopher Pringer, from the Fascia Memory Project USA, are leading the way in this regard. And so an originally intuitive therapy is now being increasingly validated by scientific research and education. We encourage you to never forget the basics, and welcome this new information as a friend. Whether you are here today as a delegate or a presenter; a teacher or a student; all your knowledge, skills and opinions are valid; as you uniquely expand your vision of Bowen. Bowen Therapy arose as a descendant of the healing heart and hands of a man named Tom Bowen. May it continue to thrive in the healing hearts and hands of its many practitioners today. “The world is run by those who show up!” Aren’t we glad that Tom showed up? Thank You Tom Bowen! And we thank YOU all for showing up! In appreciation for your attendance at this conference, for the time you take and the knowledge you constantly seek to make such a difference in people’s lives every day in your clinic, the BTAQ committee takes pleasure in presenting you all with a “thank you” bag of goodies, which will now be handed out. Fellow Bowen Therapists – enjoy your gift, enjoy your conference, enjoy each other’s company, respect your differences and celebrate your strengths.

Flatter me, and I may not believe you. Criticise me, and I may not like you. Ignore me, and I may not forgive you. Encourage me, and I will never forget you.

Summary of Health Funds Providing Rebates For Bowen Therapy

The introduction of the Private Health Accreditation Rules on July 1 2009 means that only therapists registered with an accredited association recognising the modality claimed can be eligible for rebates. Please include BTFA on your receipts as this is the accredited association. It is fraudulent to write a receipt for a service other than that which is provided.

BTFA is working hard on your behalf to gain increased health fund recognition.

Please remind your clients it is their responsibility to check with their fund for rebate information. We have found recently that “Wellness” type packages are constantly changing.

Members are automatically excluded from health fund listings if un-financial or if insurance, first aid or continuing professional education points are not current. Receipts must clearly show your name, clinic address and membership number. Some funds issue a provider number and this also must be included.

Therapist Members are automatically registered with the following funds via the monthly BTFA Health Funds List. AHM CUA Health Fund Ltd (formerly Credicare) Queensland Country Health Health Care Insurance Ltd Commonwealth Bank Health Society (CBHS) NIB Teachers Federation Health Fund Reserve Bank Health BUPA Australia (BUPA, a large fund incorporating HBA Health and Mutual Community and MBF, require new listings to hold a Diploma from July 1st 2009. They now recognise the BTFA as an accredited association and only details of Therapist Members who hold a Diploma in Bowen Therapy are sent by BTFA each month.) Bupa forward new provider numbers to the BTFA who will notify you.

These funds receive the monthly BTFA health Fund List but would like you to contact them to register.

SGIC/SGIO/NRMA Health Partners Australian Unity/Grand United

These funds use the information from your receipt and will check that the BTFA is an accredited association. Please make sure your membership number is on your receipt. Railway Transport Health (RTHealth) Transport Health Westfund Health

Medibank Private You will now have been issued with your own Provider number. Medibank Private has advised that they will not recognise “Mobile” as an address, so you will need to provide us with a Physical address for that practice. The BTFA have been asked to send WEEKLY reports to some health funds which increases the importance of maintaining the currency of your First Aid and Insurance. Unfortunately your name will automatically be dropped off lists if either of these are even one day out of date.

Defence Health and HCF have ceased to recognise Bowen Therapy. If you have clients with these funds please ask them to contact their fund to request that they reconsider. HCF has also ceased to recognise a number of natural therapies.
