How about doing it when you’re a “PAR BOWLER,” averaging 200!! How about that Scott Filipi!!! With a 218 book average, Scott expected to have a big summer. Then he started like Tommy the turtle. After a month he was at 200. The ru- mors spread that it was a bad barrel of oil. Everyone won- dered how long it would take to use up a barrel of lane oil. If it was the oil, the barrel was empty after a month. We know because Scott surged after the first month. For the next four weeks Scott rattled off four 950 or better four game sets. He started with a 966 (226 - 237 - 228 - 275) against my team and hasn’t slowed down since. Dear friends, you have to av- erage a whopping 237 to score 950. Scott is leading team- mate KEVIN STAPP into the league playoffs and is grate- ful for the BOWLING NEWS recognizing his surge. LA HABRA — The Hall of Fame ceremony to honor the 78th and 79th inductees into the coveted “Hall” went smoothly. The ceremony took place at 1 PM Saturday, August 4th at the home of the Orange County USBC Hall of Fame, La Habra 300 Bowl. The ceremony was well attended by many friends and family of the two honorees as well as the Orange County USBC board and graced by the presence of many (12) past Hall of Famers: Barry Asher; Helen Petrowski; Bud Pinchot; Ramona Clark; Alvin Uttecht; Glenn Allison; Libby Buck- ley; Scott Kraye; Mickey Cur- ley; Cheryl Huntington; Terry Brent and Rose Williams. The installation of the 2013 officers and directors to the Orange County board was conducted by PBA member and Hall of Famer, Barry Ash- er. We thank him for that! I read Shirley Anderson’s bio and impressive list of bowling accomplishments and past Orange County Hall of Famer, Libby Buckley, read mine. You always seem to learn a little more of the per- son you are honoring by lis- tening to their bio’s as they are read; very interesting in many respects... Like, who knew I was a figure skater, played base- ball, volleyball and ran track and field (?). Shirley and I were pre- sented a lovely coursage of white roses and a beautiful piece of crystal etched with our name and engraved with our accomplishment with our “special day” noted from the Orange County Association. Also presented was a certifi- cate recognizing our induction from USBC. The day was cemented by the serving of ice cream punch and a yummy cake emblazoned in bright blue, with “Congratu- lations Shirley & Joy”. Lots of congratulatory hugs, pictures, more gifts from adoring fans (only kidding), but there were some lovely, unexpected and thoughful re- memberances given....most appreciated! NATIONAL DEAF BOWLING NEWSby Connie Marchione

RESULTS OF PACIFIC COAST DEAF MASTERS AND DEAF SENIOR MASTERS

AFTER 3 DECADES SERMENO FINALLY WINS PACIFIC COAST DEAF MASTERS

FEDERAL WAY, WA — There were 31 entries in the 51st annual Connie Marchione Deaf Mas-ters held under sponsorship of Tacoma Bowling Association of the Deaf in Secoma Lanes at Fed-eral Way, WA. The event was named after this writer who started the first ever copy of prestigious ABC Masters for the nation’s deaf bowlers in 1961. The competition’s popularity drew a record entry of 429 deaf and hearing impaired bowlers at Reno, NV in 1991.

On May 26 in the Deaf Masters 4 games qualifying round Mark Terry, WA led the 31 men bowl-ers with 198-223-244-202/867. Followed by Roger Lewis, AZ in 2nd with 212-148-243-224/827 and former champion (2007) Ralph Collier, HI in 3rd place. (This writer regretted not having the handicapped list of these round scores,) Defending champion Tim Estes also qualified 7th.

The Pacific Coast Deaf Bowling Association officers decided to reward the 31 bowlers by hav-ing all qualified for positions in the 32 bowlers double elimination bracket system with the top qualifier Terry getting a bye in first round. Unfortunately as a result, the rested for first round Terry lost to a already warmed up newcomer from Hawaii Darren Neizman two games matches with handicap 418-459. Terry moved in the losers bracket and won in Round 3 but lost in round 4 to Ed Bazen, CA 371-428.

Meanwhile Neizman was on a roll, winning for 3 rounds and faced in round 4, the eventual winner Jose Sermeno, AZ who way back as a young bowler, was the runner-up in the 1979 Deaf Masters event at San Francisco. Sermeno was also o a roll wining his 3 rounds and beat Neizman 437-404. Then Sermeno faced another bowler on a roll, David Carson, WA who won all his 4 rounds matches by beating Lewis, Estes and Collier on the way. In this 5th round match, Sermeno beat Carson 403-391 and moved to top seed in the title finals.

There were excitements in the losers bracket with both former runner-ups seeking to win the title, Bazen and Nickolas Rivera, HI, both on a roll there wining 4 rounds. Bazen had eliminated Estes and himself got eliminated by Rivera in round 6. Then Rivera himself got eliminated in all Hawaiian match by Neizman who then moved to another all-Hawaiian match against his buddy Collier. The round 8 match was close with Neizman winning by 2 pins 412-410.

The newcomer Neizman had his first experience in this Masters moved on to face and eliminate Carson to move into the title finals against the waiting Sermeno, There Neizman got his revenge but giving Sermeno his first loss 424-419 but the experienced Sermeno bounced back and beat the tired Neizman 428-342.

Finally after 3 decades Sermeno got the title and $550 and Neizman as runner-up got $275. Carson got $150 for 3rd and Collier $120 for 4th and the prizes went down to$35 for 16th

place. Neizman as a young star newcomer may not need to wait long to win this title.

WESLEY KAY FINALLY WINS A BIG TITLE, DEAF SENIOR MASTERSA long time bowling leader for Angel West Club, Wesley Kay did not wait long like Jose Ser-

meno to win a Masters title. The Santa Ana right-hander was the runner-up in the 2005 Pacific Coast Deaf Senior Masters at Pearl City. HI and last May 27 Kay finally won the 24th annual Don Miller, Jr Deaf Senior Masters at Federal City, WA.

There were only a record low 7 entries and the PCDBA officers decided to proceed with the tournament with all 7 bowlers in 8 men one game matches with handicap double elimination brack-et. Gorman Low, CA as the top qualifier got the bye spot.

In winning, Kay won all his 3 rounds matches without a loss to get in the championship finals waiting for someone from the losers bracket. Larry Truett, WA lost in the first round to Steven Schmidt, WA , and in the losers bracket won 3 rounds matches before beating Schmidt in the 5th round to get in the title finals against Kay.

In the title finals, Truett beat Kay 204-194 with handicap, giving Kay his first loss. That required another match in which was a close and exciting one with Kay winning by two pins 165+36/201-164+35/199. Regardless of the small entries Kay won his first 165+big title and $250,Truett as runner-up get $125, Schmidt 3rd $100 and Howard Sultan 4th $90..

Next year’s 72nd annual Pacific Coast Deaf Bowling Association tournament will be at Vacav-ille in Northern California.

DEAF TRAVELING LEAGUE MEETING SUNDAY AUGUST 26 AT KEYSTONEThe meeting is at 12 NOON, not at 1 PM like in the past. You must show up to be counted in on

a team. If you can not make the meeting and want to be counted on a team, please contact Pres. Ed Abakumoff, Vice-Pres. Sharon Caldwell or Secretary-Treasurer Bob Taylor to let them know. Or tell your friend who will bowl, to let them know.

PBA’s Tournament of Champions Returns to Traditional Exclusive Field

Field of 48 current PBA Tour champions to head to Indianapolis for 2012-13 winter segment finaleSEATTLE – The 48th edition of the Professional Bowlers Association Tournament of Champions will return to its traditional roots

in March of 2013 when it will feature an exclusive field featuring 48 PBA Tour champions plus any previous TOC winners who elect to participate.

The Tournament of Champions will be held at Woodland Bowl in Indianapolis, March 26-31, concluding with a live five-player stepladder final airing on ESPN.

“Since its inception in 1962, the PBA Tournament of Champions has gone through several adaptations given the circumstances of the day and has maintained its unique appeal. But for this year and moving forward we have concluded that the simple variables that made the TOC the PBA’s signature event should be restored,” said PBA Commissioner Tom Clark.

“The two most important variables include returning the Tournament of Champions to an elite field – allowing the drama of trying to qualify to unfold – and utilizing a classic PBA tournament format of 48 games with all entrants starting on equal footing.”

PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia, who won the 1971 Firestone Tournament of Champions in Akron, Ohio, in his first step toward completing the PBA Triple Crown, is pleased with the return to an exclusive field.

“This is wonderful news,” Petraglia said. “I’m so happy. I’m a past champion and if I’m allowed to bowl, I’ll go even if I don’t think I have a chance to win.”

Newly-inducted PBA Hall of Famer Jason Couch, the only player to win the TOC three consecutive times, also likes the deci-sion.

“I loved the old way when we had the bubble list every week,” Couch said. “It was great to watch on television, unless you were the guy on the bubble. I can certainly see myself coming out of retirement to bowl in it.”

The 2013 TOC will feature a core field of 48 players. To make up that field, precedence goes to PBA national champions who are Touring 1 or 2 players (those who bowled in at least 60 percent of PBA Tour events last year). For the upcoming season, 46 PBA Tour champions fall into that category. Because there are 46, the remaining places on the roster will be filled by the most current title win-ners who did not attain “touring player” status last season. The current list (see below) may change during the 2012-13 season. Any new champion will bump the last eligible player – Robert Smith is currently on the “bubble” – off the eligibility list.

Additionally, all former TOC champions have a lifetime invitation to compete. Any past champions who currently are not Touring Players (see below) who elect to enter would increase the field to more than 48.

The 2013 Tournament of Champions will get underway on Wednesday, March 27, with two eight-game qualifying rounds. After a third eight-game round on Thursday, the top 24 players will advance to eight-game match play rounds Thursday evening and Friday. The top five after 48 games advance to Sunday’s ESPN finals. A pro-am program and the PBA Hall of Fame induction dinner will highlight Saturday’s schedule.

First prize in the TOC will be $50,000. All players will cash. Last place will pay $1,450.The Tournament of Champions has provided many of the most memorable moments in PBA history – the PBA’s first nationally-

televised 300 by Jack Biondolillo in 1967, Don Johnson’s emotional 299 in the title match against Dick Ritger in 1970, Kelly Kulick’s historic victory for women in 2010, Mika Koivuniemi’s 299 on his way to a record $250,000 prize in 2011 are among many others.

“The PBA Tournament of Champions has always provided electric moments,” Clark said. “In 2013, we expect more of that kind of drama: 48 champions, 48 games and live nationally-televised finals with history riding on every ball. It’s going to be a great way to conclude the winter segment of our 2012-13 schedule.”

All qualifying and match play rounds will feature live coverage on PBA’s Xtra Frame online bowling channel.

3 PMSteve: Uh, Lillian.....Lillian: She’s not here yet. You can go back to sleep.

9 PMSteve: Yawn. Well?Lillian: She called about four hours ago. She said she wouldn’t be in tonight, so you can just do an article on your own.Steve: On my own?!Dean: Hey, Steve! Could you move it? I’ve got a paper to put together and I can’t wait much longer, geez!Steve: Huh? Okay.......where’s the email bag?Dean: Carol’s got it. Now, get a move on! Let’s go! Steve: Carol’s got it? What am I supposed to write about?Dean: Think of something, “Snoopy”.......FAST! Steve: Okay! Okay!........ Man, I got nuthin!........C’mon Steve, THINK!....Snoopy? What would Snoopy do? That’s it! Dean! You’re a genius.Dean: Yeah? Well, I’m a genius with a deadline! Get busy! You have ten minutes!Steve: Ten minutes? Oy!

It was a dark and stormy night. The last pinsetter had been turned off and the crew relaxed as they waited for the league bowlers to exit the building. Doors were locked and the real work of running a bowling center began. Shoes were sprayed and put away, vending machines refilled and restrooms cleaned. Trash was discarded and taken out to nearly full recycling bins. Floors were swept and buffed, carpeting vacuumed. Channels and ap-proaches were dusted, tables and seats wiped clean. League post-ings were updated. In the back, a list of problems was hung on the wall so the mechanic would know where to focus his efforts in the morning. All that remained was to dress the lanes. This would be done in the morning so patrons would have the freshest conditions possible.

Hours had passed since the last bowler left and everyone was tired. The owner prepared to leave the building. He had a deposit to make and scheduling meant an early return the next morning. Before relocking the doors, he called back to the crew, “Make sure you turn everything off before you leave!” For a brief mo-ment he envied them. He remembered back when.... He smiled, walked to his car, started it and left.

Inside, lanes one and two came back to life. Total quiet was replaced by the mechanical clanking of tenpins being restocked into robotic pinsetters. This was the time “the crew” lived for. They would spend hours honing their skills, bonding, and en-joying the place that would someday cause endless ringing in their ears. Why? The answer was simple: Passion! They loved this game!

Maybe their parents owned the place. Maybe they were lucky enough to be the first to answer an ad that read, “Pin-Chasers Needed!” Who knows? For each of them the story is different, but this is how future elite and professional bowlers are born. This is part of the “dues” they pay.

WHITTIER — We re-turned to Friendly Hills where we saw 193 entries come out on Saturday and bowled on a fair, but tough shot. The cut scores on Saturday night were +26 for the men and -30 for the women. The Super Seniors added to the board (2 men and 1 female) were Bud Zagorski +19, and Jack Trongale +7. For the women it was Wendy Soo Hoo -63 Yes True:_)) Super Seniors are men 63 and over, and for the women you just need to be a young 55. That would give us 48 bowlers making it to the semi-finals.

Top qualifier for the Men was Rodolfo Martinez with a +111 and for the women it was Faye Josafat with a +86. They will get a paid entry into a future regular ABTA event. Each week our top seed overall draws the Match Series score and this time it was worth $1,776. Rodolfo drew a 675. We had no bowl-ers that bowled this score. We will estimate the Match Series at $800 at West Cov-ina Lanes Saturday.

The last bowler up for the 3-6-9 roll-off was Rithy Ath, who got 2, Count ‘em 2-9’s or better a record!! We had only 11 people qualify for the roll-off this week due to the tough lane conditions. Rithy would miss on his second shot, so

Jiradej harnpatanakitpanich wins in his 2nd abTa championship Match Game again $3,500 • 3-6-9 will be $1,300 • Match Series estimated at $850

ABTA at West Covina Lanes for final week HDCP Specialshe takes home a consolation of $50. The pot is $1,300 at West Covina Lanes.

In our optional doubles, finishing in first were Wilson Cheung and Samson Kong with a 1353 for $120. Finish-ing in second was William Zarek and Mark Andrews with a 1318 for $100. There was a total of $950 paid out in doubles and 17 paid spots with low to cash of 1261.

After the 3 game Semi-finals, finishing in first was the low qualifying female to make it to semis, Beth Borci, with a +93. She did this with a big third game of 287 with hdcp. Finishing in 2nd was Bonnie Roberto at a +85 so will sit out the first round of the single elims . Our top seed in semi-finals had the honor of drawing the Match Game worth $3,500. Beth drew a 220. After a review of all the scores bowled, we had no bowlers who shot that score, and so it will continue to carry over. There are three full pots, with a 4th pot that is currently over $900.

This would bring us to our top 16 Match Play finals. In the first round, the seven los-ers were Faye Josafat, Thom-as Licauco, Chris Romero, Benjamin Chung, Wilson Chung, Steve Brode, and Tres Catalsan. They received checks of $100 each. In the

second round, the losers were Ricardo Baca, Carlos Umana, Rodolfo Martinez, and Bonnie Roberto. They received checks of $107.50 each. The weekly horses paying a low of $44 (BK) to a high of $101 (Ada Wong-Hum). In this round we saw Jiradej “BK” Harnpatanakit-panich (11th seed) bowling Greg Kokanour (3rd seed). We would see a match where the scoring would be close throughout the match. Greg held the lead most of the match, but opens in the 7th and 8th frames brought the match close and allow it to be decided in the last frame. BK came up first in the 10th frame and he would get a double. This would force Greg needing to mark. He left the 10 pin on his first ball and would need to pick this up to advance. He missed it to the right and that sent BK on to the semi-final match with a 214 to 209 finish. In the other match we saw Ada Wong-Hum (13th seed) bowling Tony Leogrande (12th seed). In this match, it would also come down to the end. It was Ada who would hold off Tony with a 233 to 203 to advance to the semi-final match. Greg and Tony finished in 4th and 5th get-ting checks for $115 each.

Our semi-final match was

all set, and would pit the 13th and 12th seeds. In the weekly “horses” we would see BK paying $44 and Ada paying $101 if they would win their match. In this match it was another battle, led the match early as BK had 2 opens in the first 4 frames while Ada would continue to mark. Ada came through with a double in the 5th and 6th frames but followed that up with two opens that allowed the match to get close as BK only trailed by 17 pins. But that is when he came alive and would throw the final 5 strikes to finish the match and advance with a 206/252 to 172/226.. Finishing in 3rd place was Ada Wong this week for $200. For those lucky “inves-tors” that had BK as a horse, he paid $44.

The title game was set. It would be B. K. against the top qualifier Beth Borci. She elected to go first, and she would start with a spare. BK would come up and get marks in both his frames. That would bring up Beth and she would get a strike, then leave the 1-3-5, and pick up only two of those pins. BK would open in the third frame and he had a four pin lead at this time. He would get a mark in the fourth and Beth would open in the fourth and get a spare in the fifth. BK would get marks in his two frames and build his lead to 16 pins. Beth would open in the 6th thru 8th frames with BK opening up in two out of those three frames. After eight frames he had a 37 pin lead and would cruise to his 2nd ABTA Championship with a 170/216 to 138/177. He would take home $1,000 for 1st place, $1,700 in Cash and Carry, for a total of $2,700. Finishing in 2nd place for $500 was Beth Borci.

scoTT newell WINS PBA EAST

REGION’S RICHEST TournaMenT

MIDDLETOWN — Scott Newell of Deland, Fla., de-feated Rick Graham of Lan-caster, Pa., 194-165, to win the $10,000 first prize in the PBA East Region Appletree Classic at Mid-County Lanes in Mid-dletown, Pa., Sunday.

Newell, who posted a 9-3 match play record, earned the top position for the stepladder finals by 84 pins by defeating Graham, 267-198, in the posi-tion round match. The win was Newell’s fourth career PBA re-gional title. He earned his first PBA Tour title in Columbus, Ohio, in February.

Newell’s $10,000 prize matched the largest payoff in PBA East Region history, matching the prize earned in the same event last year by Dick Allen of Columbia, S.C. The tournament, sponsored by Appletree Answering Service for the second season, drew a field of 148 participants.

And further good news for PBA East Region competi-tors: Appletree has already an-nounced it will renew its spon-sorship for 2013.

NORWALK — Derek Eoff is off to a blazing start as a PBA Midwest Regional “rookie,” advancing to the title match in his first five tour-naments over a span of six weeks. But if anyone knows how Eoff feels after finishing second in all five events, it’s probably Sean Rash, who de-nied Eoff his first PBA title in his most recent event.

Rash, who lives in Mont-gomery, Ill., defeated Eoff, 215-208, in the title match of the joint PBA Midwest/Central Region Dragon Palace Open at Orland Bowl in Orland Park, Ill., on Sunday, July 29. It was the former Team USA member and University of Nebraska collegiate All-American’s fifth runner-up finish in his first five events since joining the PBA in late June.

Whether the runner-up string is a record is unknown because it’s not a record cat-egory the PBA maintains, but “I can’t imagine anyone, at least in their first five events as a member, finishing second in all of them,” Eoff said.

Eoff, who recently moved to Madison, Wis., from Ar-lington, Texas, is employed by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

“I’m bowling well; I can’t really complain although ob-viously I want to win,” Eoff said. “It’s aggravating when you bowl that well for all those (qualifying) games and it comes down to one game at the end, but obviously I haven’t bowled as well as my opponent in that last game.

“I’m not questioning my abilities by any means. You can’t take away what I’ve done to get to the title match-es. I have no doubt it’s going to happen.”

Rash, who ended a per-

HAMMOND — The 2012 PBA Senior Tour heads into its home stretch next week with the Senior South Shore Open pre-sented by DV8 at Olympia Lanes in Hammond, Ind., and both the PBA Senior Player of the Year and Senior Rookie of the Year races are on the line.

While PBA Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr. of Ocala, Fla., holds a commanding 16-point lead in the Player of the Year race, the Senior Rookie of the Year contest – which will be de-cided by news media-PBA member balloting at the conclusion of the season – is wide open. Thus far in the season, “rookies” Lennie Boresch Jr., Bob Learn Jr., Amleto Monacelli and Mike Edwards have each won a title.

The Hammond tournament is set for Aug. 6-9, followed by the end-of-season Senior Decatur (Ill.) Open at Spare Times Lanes Aug. 11-14. Other highlights as the curtain falls on the Senior Tour season is the return of PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia after mid-season surgery on his non-bowling shoulder, and the final event in fellow PBA Hall of Famer Dave Soutar’s 51-year bowling career in Decatur. Xtra Frame will provide live online coverage of the Decatur event.

RASH HANDS EOFF HIS FIFTH CONSECUTIVE RUNNER-UP

FINISH IN PBA MIDWESTsonal four-year PBA Tour title drought when he won the PBA Tournament of Champions in April, knows was Eoff is go-ing through.

“It comes down to a one-game match and everyone wants to win,” Rash said. “Derek is a phenomenal play-er, a great talent and he has been for a long time. The only advice I have for him is to keep doing what he’s doing.

“I’ve been in his position; I know what it’s like to finish second,” Rash added. “All you can do it put yourself in posi-tion to win. I want to see him succeed, but it’s an individual game. I hope he wins soon. Just not against me.”

During his streak, Eoff lost title matches to PBA Hall of Famer Pete Weber (248-217 in Oak Forest, Ill.); Dale Tra-ber (by 10 pins in a 19-game total pinfall event in Wheaton, Ill.); Dave Beres and Lennie Boresch Jr. (459-439 in dou-bles event with partner Wayne Webb in Johnsburg, Ill.), and David Traber (226-223 in Peru, Ill.)

Our prize funds are always guaranteed, not based on en-tries, and are normally paid at the conclusion of each event. The founder of the ABT, Ken Daleiden, retired in 2004 and the Company’s administra-tion was taken over by My-ron Mitchell, the then owner of the Salt Lake area. Myron brought with him the perma-nent sponsorship of Storm Bowling Products, Inc., the largest manufacturer of high performance bowling balls in the world. ABT and Storm have been working to improve competitive bowling together since 1996 and are paying out over a million dollars each year in its national events and another two plus million a year in the local events. The ABT has paid out more money in the past thirty five (35) years than the PBA has in it history. There are currently over 16 branches of ABT nationwide. There are several more that will be opened in the next 18 months, including the north-west, southwest and Eastern seaboard. There are also fran-chises available in other metro areas. Contact our national of-fice for more details at [email protected].

Warm up Squads have been added to the SoCal branches. This is a special squad where the entry fee is only $20 for a 2 game squad. You must be in Mega for this squad. This spe-cial squad is normally the first squad of the day.

The SoCal territory is also changing the entry fee to $45.00 for Gold members that participate in the Mega Pot. All others (including Gold members) add $10.00. Most events have squad times of 12:00 PM, 1:30 PM and 3:00 PM with match play finals to follow. This means even if you are there for the championship match, you should be done by 6:00PM and on your way home with your winnings. First place in all tournaments will be guaranteed a minimum of $1000 with Mega. SoCal ABT offers up to four chances each weekend to win the $1000.00 first place in all four parts of the Southern California area.

PBA Senior South Shore Open Field of approximately 120 Senior Tour players to

compete in next-to-last event of 2012 season

HAMMOND, Ind. – As the 2012 PBA Senior Tour season draws to a close, a field of approxi-mately 120 players will compete in the PBA Senior South Shore Open presented by DV8 Aug. 6-9 at Olympia Lanes in Hammond, Ind. The Senior South Shore Open is the second-to-last event of the season which wraps up with the Senior Decatur Open presented by Brunswick Aug. 11-14. Here are a few storylines heading into the Hammond event:

Walter Ray Williams Jr. hopes to clinch first Senior POY crown: Heading into the final two tournaments of the PBA’s 2012 Senior Tour season, Hall of Famer Walter Ray Williams Jr., holds a commanding lead in the Senior Player of the Year points race. As the Senior Tour’s only two-time winner this season, the 52-year-old holds a 16-point lead over fellow Hall of Famer Amleto Monacelli and Mike Edwards. If he can clinch POY in Hammond it would be his first Senior honor to go along with a record seven PBA Tour POY awards. Williams was also the 2010 Senior Rookie of the Year.

Return of Johnny Petraglia to 2012 season: PBA Hall of Famer Johnny Petraglia will make his return to the 2012 season after a three-month absence because of shoulder surgery. Right before his surgery, Petraglia, a 14-time winner on the PBA Tour and seven-time winner on the Senior Tour, be-came the only bowler in PBA history to win a PBA Tour or Senior Tour title in six different decades when he won the Senior Dayton Classic in May. Fellow PBA great Dick Weber also won titles in six decades but his final tournament win was a PBA regional title.

Former Tour players make their mark on Senior Tour in first year of eligibility: This season four players have scored wins in their first year of eligibility including Lennie Boresch Jr., who won the Sun Bowl in The Villages in his Senior Tour debut; former PBA Tour player Bob Learn Jr. (Senior Mooresville Classic), Amleto Monacelli (Senior U.S. Open) and Mike Edwards (USBC Senior Masters). All are in contention for Senior Rookie of the Year honors which is determined by a vote by PBA members and selected bowling media.

Harry Sullins hoping to defend his title: In 2011, Harry Sullins, a winner of five PBA Tour titles, won his second Senior Tour title of the season and third of his career by defeating eventual Senior Player of the Year Ron Mohr of Eagle River, Alaska, 246-221, in the championship match of the Senior Lake County Open.

PBA legend Dave Soutar’s career coming to a close: After more than a half-century competing on the PBA National and Senior Tours, Hall of Famer Dave Soutar of Bradenton, Fla., will call it a career at the conclusion of the 2012 Senior Tour season. Soutar has logged 51 years in PBA competition and a record 257 Senior Tour tournaments heading into the Hammond event. He is an 18-time PBA Tour winner and seven-time winner on the Senior Tour which includes the 2002 Senior Lake County Open.

Hammond’s own Kenny Parks hoping for first title of the season and second of his career: Kenny Parks of Hammond, the winner of the 2008 USBC Senior Masters, will be trying for his second career Senior Tour title. His best finishes this season are a seventh and 11th and he finished fourth in last year’s Senior Lake County Open.

BOWLING NEWSAugust 9, 2012 Page 11

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Aug. 3, 2012) – Eight of the nation’s best high school bowlers – four boys and four girls – are headed to New York City’s Grand Central Terminal for a two-day battle Tuesday and Wednesday, competing for a $64,000 “full ride” scholarship prize which will be awarded to the winner of the 15th annual Teen Masters Grand Championship.

Kamron Doyle of Brentwood, Tenn., at age 14, and last year’s 14-Under champion Ashley Dunn of Palmdale, Calif., 15, will lead their respective divisions into the finals after winning their respec-tive qualifying events held in July at Freeway Lanes in Wickliffe, Ohio. Also advancing in the boys’ division are Jacob Ettinger, Lafayette, Colo.; Greg Young, Viera, Fla.; Aaron Yuratovich, Olathe, Kan. The other three high school girls are Haley Rubin, Brandon, S.D.; Jessica Davies, Cape Coral, Fla., and Melanie Hannon, Cheektowaga, N.Y.

All competition will be conducted Tuesday, Aug. 7, and Wednesday, Aug. 8, on a unique one-lane bowling installation inside Grand Central Terminal’s Vanderbilt Hall, just a few feet away from a steady stream of thousands of commuters who visit New York’s historic transit hub every day.

Doyle, who will graduate from Brentwood High School in 2016, is a Junior Team USA member who became the youngest player in U.S. Open history to advance beyond the preliminary qualify-ing rounds, finishing 61st in a field of 385 of the best professional and amateur bowlers from around the world earlier this year in North Brunswick, N.J.

Yuratovich, 16, will graduate from Olathe East High School in 2014.

Ettinger, 18, is a 2012 graduate of Centaurus High School in Lafayette and is headed to Webber International in Lakes Wales, Fla., this fall.

Young, 16, will graduate from Viera High School in 2014.

Hannon, 16, will be a member of the Maryvale High School graduating class in Cheektowaga, N.Y., in 2013.
