She was born on Abt. 1825 in Saxony, Germany. She died on 01 Apr 1868 in Utica, NY[1]. Notes for John Baumann Sr.: I believe John Baumann came to Utica in 1853. That was the year he first showed up in the Utica City Directory. At that time he was living at 23 S. Hamilton St. was working as a Cartman. The name at this time in the City Directory was Baumann. 1855 Utica Census (ward 6 pg. 86) says John Bouman was born in Germany. The 1860 Census spelled the name Bomann and says he was born in Switzerland. He was a laborer and not naturalized. Believe he died in 1864. Census says his wife was a widow in 1865. In the 1860 Census, it showed a Rosina Hintenmuth, age 59, living with the family. In 1870 the children were living by themselves with no parents alive. The name was spelled Bauman. In the baptism records of his children, his name was listed as Joannis Baumann. According to the family story, John left his family and never returned. His wife died of a broken heart. Generation 1 1. John Baumann Sr.-1 was born on Abt. 1826 in Saxony Germany. He died on Abt. 1864. He

married Martha (Martina Kohlhammer) Baumann on Abt. 1850. She was born on Abt. 1825 in

Saxony, Germany. She died on 01 Apr 1868 in Utica, NY[1].

Notes for John Baumann Sr.: I believe John Baumann came to Utica in 1853. That was the year he first showed up in the Utica

City Directory. At that time he was living at 23 S. Hamilton St. was working as a Cartman. The name

at this time in the City Directory was Baumann.

1855 Utica Census (ward 6 pg. 86) says John Bouman was born in Germany. The 1860 Census

spelled the name Bomann and says he was born in Switzerland. He was a laborer and not

naturalized. Believe he died in 1864. Census says his wife was a widow in 1865.

In the 1860 Census, it showed a Rosina Hintenmuth, age 59, living with the family. In 1870 the

children were living by themselves with no parents alive. The name was spelled Bauman. In the

baptism records of his children, his name was listed as Joannis Baumann.

According to the family story, John left his family and never returned. His wife died of a broken

heart.

Notes for Martha (Martina Kohlhammer) Baumann: 1855 Census (Utica) lists her name as Martha Bouman born Germany. This census also says she

was not naturalized and had been living in Utica for 4 years. 1860 Census lists her name as Martina

Bomann born in Switzerland. 1865 Census lists her name as Marthina Bouman born in Germany and

a widow.

In 1883 August Hahn sold to George Bowman and his wife, property located on Hamilton Street,

Utica, NY. (40' frontage, 100' deep.)

Notes for Rose Hahn Bowman: She

died of Typhoid Malaria Fever.

Buried in tier 29, grave 2 Lived at 150 Schuyler Street, Utica, NY at time of death. Member of

the Zion's Lutheran Church.

Notes for David Bowman: I believe David was born in May 1880, according to the 1880 Census. I don't

think he lived to be very old as the brothers never mentioned him.

Notes for Edward Bowman: Newspaper article: A man found dead in a highway ditch between Nelliston and

St. Johnsville this morning was believed to be Edward Bowman of Jersey City, NJ.

Two of his brothers live in Utica. Believed to have been struck by a car operated by a hit and run driver while hitch-

hiking to Utica to visit his brother Walter J. Bowman. Victim 58 years old had a cut

on his head and bruises on his arms and hands. His clothes were torn and his

false teeth were found lying near the body. Edward, who had been a frequent

visitor to Utica, had sent his traveling bag to Utica after writing his brother that he

would pay him a visit. The American Railway Express receipt for the bag was

found in the man's pocket and this, with the fact that the man had false teeth and

had planned to visit Utica, let Utica relatives to believe that he was Edward

Bowman. He had been unemployed for several years. Relatives expected to

view the body during the day to make certain about the identification. The body was

discovered at 8:15 a.m. by Francis O'Brien, St. Johnsville, driver of an oil truck. He

stopped and investigated when he saw a hat lying on the shoulder of the highway.

The body lay in a pool of water in the ditch. O'Brien notified Sheriff Gerald Nellis,

Fonda, who began an investigation. A piece of some sort of vehicle was found

nearby and this with injuries suffered by the man led the authorities to believe that

he was a victim of a hit and run driver. Coroner Clark Congdon of Fort Plain was

notified and he ordered the body removed in the Graves funeral parlors in Fort Plain

for an autopsy. Besides the brother mentions, Mr. Bowman is survived by three

other brothers, George Bowman, Utica, Thomas, Jersey City, Noble, Albany. Also a

sister Viola, Jersey City. His body was interred November 1, 1938 in Utica, NY, New

Forest Cemetery. Buried tier 40,grave 13

Jersey City. He was listed as Joseph and was born in New Jersey. The 1910 Censes showed

George living with this brother, Walter, in Utica, NY and said he was born in New York. In the 1920

and 1930 Census, he was married and living with his in-laws in Utica. Said he was born in New

York.

Obituary: George F. Bowman, 65, of 226 North Genesee Street died unexpectedly in his home, Jan. 8, 1957,

a week after he retired from the Bossert Division of the Rockwell Spring & Axle Co. Dr. Preston

Clark, corner, said death was due to heart attack. Bowman was born in Utica, December 18, 1891,

a son of the late George and Rose Hahn Bowman. On Sept. 16, 1916, he married Etta Sifer in St.

Joseph's Church. He was a member of St. Peter's Church. For the past 23 years he had been employed at the Bossert Division, retiring Jan. 1, 1957. Besides his wife he

leaves a son, G. Marvin Bowman; a daughter, Mrs. Gordon Emery, Sauquoit; a brother Thomas,

Jersey City, NJ; a sister Mrs. Violet Valet, Albany; four grandchildren and several nieces and

nephews. The funeral will be held Friday morning from the Langdon Funeral Chapel, 630 Varick St.,

and from St. Peter's Church. Burial will be in St. Joseph's Cemetery.

Taken from Utica Daily Press September 7, 1916. The marriage of Miss Susanna Sifer of 1108 Sunset Avenue, daughter of Mr. & Mrs. George Sifer, to

George F. Bowman of 1107 Walnut Street took place at 9:00 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Rev. Phillip

Friedman officiating. Thomas E. Ryan played the organ and the young ladies choir of the church

sang the mass. The attendants of the bride were Miss Margaret Urtz, her cousin, as bridesmaid, and

Miss Ida Rivers of Rome, another cousin, as maid of honor. Thomas Holland and John Swertfager

attended the groom. The bride wore a gown of white moire, with georgette crepe trimmings, and

wore a white veil trimmed with orange blossoms. She carried bride's roses. The bridesmaid was

attired in pink taffeta with chiffon trimmings, and wore a wreath of pink roses. The maid of honor wore

yellow taffeta, with white trimmings and a wreath of yellow roses. The couple left for a wedding trip to

New York, Jersey City and Philadelphia, after a wedding breakfast at the home of the bride's parents.

The groom is employed at the Savage arms plant and has many friends here. The bride was the

guest of honor at variety showers held by Miss Emma Fehlner, Miss Margaret Bamberger and Miss

Margaret Urtz. The couple will reside upon their return at 1106 Sunset Avenue, and many friends

will wish them happiness.
