Page 1: Boy critical essay

“Boy” by roald Dahl is a story of Roald's entertaining and exciting anecdotes during his

childhood. His life was very different from kids nowadays and that is why it’s enjoyable as it

teaches you about life in the 1900s. It also talks about how his childhood influenced his

books. “Boy” is an interesting book to read if you like to know about famous people’s lives

and hilarious anecdotes. There are characters that also influenced his books. The funny

anecdotes also make the book fun and not boring. This story has many aspects to explore

such as anecdotes, lifestyle, school style, characters and vivid descriptions. But I will explain

the ones I liked the most.

The book is about Roald's childhood and he did a good job retelling fun anecdotes in this

book. My favorite one was in the chapter "The Great Mouse Plot". In this chapter he tells us

that he loved candies and hated the woman who sold them and the joke he and his friends

played on her. It was an enjoyable chapter thanks to it's vivid descriptions, interesting and

catchy anecdotes.

Many characters were present in his book, but not all of them are important. Many of them

seemed to be but weren’t, like his father. In my opinion there were three main characters:

The Matron, Mrs.Pratchett and his first headmaster. This were the most important as they

were very present in his book. Mrs. Pratchett got him into candies and that is why he wrote

“Charlie and the Chocolate Factory”. The Matron is important as she was very annoying to

Roald and lit his hatred towards adults. His first head master is important as he is mentioned

a lot for many reasons but mainly for being like a bodyguard and not letting him act as he

wanted.

This story let’s us know funny and interesting moments of Dahl’s childhood. He gives

detailed descriptions and very fun ones. The one I liked the most was when he faked to have

appendicitis to go home. He was able to pull it off as he had seen his sister’s symptoms. I

liked this anecdote because I felt identified with his excuse to go home. When I was in

primary school I used to fake headaches and stomach ache to go home and be with my

family.

To conclude, “Boy” by Roald Dahl is an interesting story for many reasons like the ones

above. I would recommend it to anyone who likes good stories. In my opinion this book is

interesting and fun to read.
