One Hundred Scouts

Of the one hundred, rarely will one ever appear before a juvenile

court judge. Twelve of the one hundred will be from families that

belong to no church. Through Scouting, these twelve and many of

their families will be brought into contact with a church and will

continue to be active. Six of the one hundred will become pastors.

Each of the one hundred will learn something from Scouting.

Almost all will develop hobbies that will add interest throughout

the rest of their lives. Approximately one half will serve in the

military, and in varying degrees profit from their Scout training. At

least one will use it to save another person's life and many will

credit it with saving their own.

Only two of the one hundred will reach Eagle rank, and at least one

will later say that he valued his Eagle above his college degree.

Many will find their vocation through merit badge work and

Scouting contacts. Seventeen of the one hundred boys will later

become Scout leaders and will give leadership to thousands of

additional boys. Only one in four boys in America will become

Scouts, but it is interesting to note that of the leaders of this nation

in business, religion, and politics, three out of four were Scouts. Of

the 24 men to travel to the moon, 21 were scouts and the first man

on the Moon, Neal Armstrong, is an Eagle Scout. All the

astronauts on Apollo 13 – the mission known as the successful

failure - were all scouts.

This story will never end. Like the Golden Pebble of Service

dropped into the human sea, it will continue to radiate in ever-

widening circles, influencing the characters of men down through

unending time.

Tim’s Eagle Project

The original idea for my project stemmed from the need for a snack shack on the San Ramon Valley High School pool deck. The 50 year-old pool recently had its existing building torn down along with the school’s old gymnasium. As far as anyone knew, there would not be a new structure for at least five years, if at all. Since the snack shack brought in money for both the swim and water polo programs, both of which I competed with. I decided that I would like to build a temporary structure to serve the fundraising purpose of the demolished snack shack.

By the time I had drawn up the plans and gained approval for my project, however, the old pool had been condemned and San Ramon was on its way to having a brand new pool. As we didn’t know if there would be need for my project at the new pool, I instead decided that it should benefit all school events and programs.

My project was to construct and deliver a portable display case with shelves for the use of San Ramon Valley High School events. The unit is eight feet long, two feet deep, and four feet tall with a Plexiglas face, internal shelving, and thematic color scheme. It has back facing shelves for display of sellable items. Spanning over three days, the planning and construction took a combined effort of 318.5 scout and adult leader work hours, 105 of which I spent myself. The case was later painted green and gold and it now serves as a portable multi-purpose storage and display case with a counter used to sell food and spirit wear to benefit school clubs and activities.

Kyle’s Eagle Project

I worked with Mr. Dowlern, the Director of Tech Arts Ministry at Community Presbyterian Church in Danville, CA, to inventory all the audio and visual equipment of the church. There are 1400 registered members of the church and the Tech Arts /Music Ministry needed to categorize its 7 rooms of audio-visual equipment inventory in an electronic format. This would allow the church to document ownership of the equipment, list the equipment’s replacement value for insurance purposes, and have a working locator inventory list.

A numbered labeling system was created to identify the items. An online inventory application that allows simultaneous multi-user input was used. I was able to document the name, description, location, make, model, and serial number of the inventory items. Photos were taken of items with high value and spaces were left for Mr. Dowlern to document the replacement cost.

As a member of the Tech Arts Ministry, I was eager to try my hand at a new generation of Eagle projects procedure. My project required no materials funding but had great value to the church. The scouts and volunteers came with their computers, tablets and phones and logged onto the online application website. The work crews logged in 54 youth service hours in 3 days and inventoried 390 items.

My objective for this project was to create an easy to maintain inventory system for the church that could be shared by the many members of the Tech Arts and Music Ministry. It will serve as a reference resource for the weekend service setup volunteers so that they know where the tech and music items are stored and where they are supposed to go after they are used, resulting in a faster and more efficient setup time for events and services and less misplaced and/or lost items.
