NOBLEMAN AND WARRIOR

The Foremost Man of the KingdomJohn de Vere, Thirteenth Earl of Oxford (1442-1513)JAMES ROSS The first book to deal with de Vere’s life and extraordinary career, during the Wars of the Roses and beyond.

ɶ Paperback début ɶ The only complete account of one of medieval England’s

greatest noblemen ɶ The life of a key Lancastrian and commander at the Battle

of BosworthEarl of Oxford for fifty years, and subject of six kings of England during the political strife of the Wars of the Roses, John de Vere’s career included more changes of fortune than almost any other. He recovered his earldom after the execution of his father and brother for treason, but his resistance to Edward IV led to a decade in prison. He escaped in time to lead Henry Tudor’s vanguard at Bosworth in 1485 and subsequently enjoyed twenty-five years as perhaps “the foremost man of the kingdom”, virtually ruling East Anglia for the king.JAMES ROSS is Senior Lecturer in Late Medieval History at the University of Winchester.A well-written, well-researched and extremely engaging look at an influential player during a pivotal time in British history. THE RISE AND FALL OF REBELLIOUS EARLS

The Bigod Earls of Norfolk in the Thirteenth CenturyMARC MORRIS An acclaimed study of the powerful but rebellious Bigod Earls.

ɶ Paperback début ɶ Marc Morris is well-known for his many books and television

appearances (Castle and Time Team) and regular contributions to magazines and journals

ɶ An aristocratic family of national significance, the Bigod’s powerbase was in East Anglia where they owned castles at Orford, Bungay and Framlingham

Descended from Roger Bigod, a Norman knight who established himself in East Anglia during the Conquest, the Bigods were one of the most powerful and important families in thirteenth-century England and this is the first full-scale study of the two great earls, Roger III Bigod (c. 1209-70) who famously led the march on Westminster Hall in 1258 against Henry III, and Roger IV Bigod (1245-1306) who confronted Edward I in a similar fashion in 1297. The book explores in depth the reasons that led each of them to take the extreme step of confronting his king and scrutinizes their private affairs, relationships with friends and relatives, their building works, and even their personalities.MARC MORRIS is a much-published historian specializing in the Middle Ages. His books include The Norman Conquest and Castle, which accompanied the television series he presented for Channel 4.Engaging and tremendously informative. THE MEDIEVAL REVIEW

The Other FriarsThe Carmelite, Augustinian, Sack and Pied Friars in the Middle AgesFR ANCES ANDREWS An absorbing look at the origins, development and contrasting destinies of four medieval monastic orders.

ɶ The latest volume from our popular Monastic Orders series to make its paperback début

ɶ Reclaims the ‘lost’ orders from obscurity ɶ Covers a period of great development and change for the Church

in EuropeIn 1274 the Council of Lyons decreed the end of various “new orders” of Mendicants which had emerged during the Church’s great push for evangelism and poverty. The Franciscans and Dominicans were excluded, while the Carmelites and Austin friars were allowed a stay of execution and eventually acquired approval, but other smaller groups like the Friars of the Sack and Pied Friars were forced to disband. The histories of those threatened by 1274 is laid out here, and of particular interest are those of the discontinued friaries, which are given in full detail, from their origins, spirituality and pastoral impact, to their music, buildings and runaways.FRANCES ANDREWS is Professor in Mediaeval History at the University of St Andrews.A fine study.... REMEMBERING THE FALLEN

The Great War, Memory and RitualCommemoration in the City and East London, 1916-1939MARK C ONNELLY Reveals how both survivors and bereaved sought to come to terms with the losses and implications of the Great War.

ɶ First time in paperback ɶ A timely study of a little-discussed subject ɶ Reconnects with the original motivation behind our now

ubiquitous war memorials: the urgent need to remember lost family, friends and colleagues

Disputing the modern belief that the Great War was regarded as a futile waste of life by British society in the disillusioned twenties and thirties, Mark Connelly demonstrates the ways in which communities as diverse as the Irish Catholics of Wapping, the Jews of Stepney and the Presbyterian Scots of Ilford shaped the memory of their dead and created a very definite history of the war. Close focus on the planning of, fund-raising for, and erection of war memorials expands to a wider examination of how those memorials became a focus for a continuing need to remember, particularly each year on Armistice Day.MARK CONNELLY is Professor of Modern British Military History, University of Kent. The war memorials of the 1914-1918 war are to be found everywhere in the British Isles.... Through the meticulous scholarship of Mark Connelly, we can once again hear the voices of those who created them. ENGLISH HISTORICAL REVIEW

GOD, WAR AND AMERICA

God and Uncle SamReligion and America’s Armed Forces in World War IIMICHAEL SNAPE This authoritative and timely book sheds new light on the role of religion during the Second World War, and its impact on post-war American society.

ɶ A ground-breaking examination of religion’s role in America’s ‘Good War’

ɶ 2015 is the 70th anniversary of the end of the Second World War ɶ “Offers a new perspective on the way the United States made war.”

Richard J. Overy, author of The Bombing War and A History of War in 100 Battles

America’s armed forces were the products of one of the most diverse and dynamic religious cultures in the western world and were the largest ever to be raised by a professedly religious society. God and Uncle Sam shows that religion played a crucial role in helping more than 16 million uniformed Americans through the ordeal of World War II, a fact that had profound and far-reaching implications for the religious development of post-war America. This timely book draws on meticulous research in US archives and is informed by contemporary films, photographs, posters, and sound recordings.MICHAEL SNAPE is Reader in the Department of History, University of Birmingham.

THE ROOTS OF LAW

Law, Liberty and the ConstitutionA Brief History of the Common LawHARRY POT TER A new approach to the telling of legal history, jargon-free and replete with good stories, essential for anyone wishing to know more about the common law, the backbone of the English body politic.

ɶ A beautifully clear account of a sprawling subject ɶ Detailed, concise yet highly readable, it has no direct competitor ɶ Published on the 800th anniversary of the signing of Magna Carta

This history of English common law is unique in being learned, thought-provoking and hugely entertaining at the same time. It tells how the law evolved from a means of ensuring order and limiting feuds to become a supremely sophisticated dispenser of justice and the primary guardian of civil liberties. This development owed much to the English kings and their judiciary, who, in the twelfth century, forged a unified system of law – predating that of any other European country – from almost wholly Anglo-Saxon elements. Yet by the seventeenth century this royal offspring – Oedipus Lex it could be called – was capable of regicide. Since then the law has had a somewhat fractious relationship with that institution upon which the regal mantle of supreme power descended, Parliament.HARRY POTTER is a former fellow of Selwyn College, Cambridge, a practising barrister specialising in criminal defence and has presented The Strange Case of the Law for BBC4, for which he won a Royal Television Society Award.

ARTISTS IN WARTIME

Unposted LettersCorrespondence, Diaries, Drawings, Documents 1940-1942 FR ANCISZKA THEMERSON & STEFAN THEMERSON Edited by JASIA REICHARDTLetters, diaries, drawings and official documents tell the wartime story of Franciszka and Stefan Themerson, artists, writers and film-makers in exile.

ɶ The personal wartime story of two leading figures of the avant garde

ɶ Founded the ground-breaking Gaberbocchus Press which published Alfred Jarry, Kurt Schuritters and Bertrand Russell

ɶ Their films remain highly influential (e.g. Quay Brothers) and Franciszka’s illustrations and book design remain refreshingly contemporary

When artist Franciszka Themerson and her writer and film-maker husband, Stefan, moved from Poland to Paris in 1938 it was because Paris was the world centre for the arts. War broke out, and Franciszka found herself in London while Stefan remained in France as a soldier. From 1939 until 1942 they lived apart. 150 of their letters survive, as do 150 telegrams, Stefan’s diaries, official papers and Franciszka’s drawings. The documents in this beautifully produced and highly illustrated book articulate the inner life of two remarkable individuals who are borne along by an erratic course of events over which they have little control.
