Are you ready for another Sizzling Summer of Fun, Sun & Relaxation in Boyne Country?
The sun is out, the birds are chirping and the snow is nowhere to be seen. That means only one thing: Possibilities. You see, summer in Boyne Country is more than just another season in just another neck of the woods. Our people have a tendency to dance in the streets; and the thunder you hear rolling in off the water may be followed by cheers of jubilation. We celebrate art and tractors, fast cars and mushrooms ... and strolling our streets can be so much more than a walk.Whether you’re a bachelor up with your buddies for a fishing trip or a family in
town to celebrate one of our many festi-vals, the Boyne area has the luxury and economy lodging, world-renowned at-tractions, signature events, great golfing and natural beauty to make your stay a memorable one.Nestled along the southeast portion of Lake Charlevoix, Boyne City and the surrounding communities of Boyne Falls and Walloon Lake are replete with lush lakes, rustic camping opportunities, artisans, fine dining and crisp, clean wa-ter for boating and swimming. So, are you ready for possibilities this summer? Are you ready for Boyne Country?

The Memorial Day Drag Race event is coming on May 29, from noon to 6 p.m.The action will take place at the Boyne City Airport.“I thought about it one day while I was looking at the air strip. We put it together and fortunately it worked out,” said Randy How-ard, Boyne City’s Police Chief. “This event started back in the fall of 2003 on labor day week-end.”Racers will be competing down a side by side 1/8 mile runway, at least 660 feet, and will be record-ed on advanced systems present. Randy Howard also stated, “We have high 80s low 90s attending, last fall we had 110 racers pres-ent.”
Aside from muscle cars you will also find diesel trucks and snow-mobiles competing for best times and new records. You can get in for free if you are under 12, and for adults it’s $10. For $15 you can obtain a pit pass, which will get you down to see the cars only feet away.75 percent of the proceeds go to the Boyne City Airport, and 25 percent goes to the police depart-ment.The Boyne Valley Lions Club will be supplying food and bev-erages.The drag race happens every La-bor Day weekend and Memorial Day on Sundays. The events draw people from many different places.

Everyone’s favorite patriotic pastime gets the traditional hometown treat-ment in Boyne City. Our 4th of July celebration kicks off bright and early with a 2-mile and 10-K race at 7:30 a.m.Then, at 10 a.m., the Grand Parade filled with performers, service clubs, clowns and characters marches its way from the corner of East and Wa-ter streets and proceeds west down Water Street to Lake Street then north on Lake Street up to Glen’s Market. The Boyne Valley Garden Club hosts its scrumptious pie sale and the Boyne City Rotary Club barbecues enough chicken downtown in the park to make Colonel Sanders jeal-
ous.A good old-fashioned pie-eating contest and kids’ games are held af-ter lunch. And then the sweet summer air is filled with the sounds of live music in Veteran’s Park from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. At 2 p.m. those looking to cool off may enjoy the Boyne River Raft Race.Attendees will also get the chance to win up to $1,000 in cash with the an-nual Boyne River Duck Race.An afternoon soap box derby will test the nerves of young drivers and then the day’s events culminate in a breathtaking fireworks display over Lake Charlevoix.

Now in its eighth year, “Dancin’ in the Streets” started with little more than two dozen patrons. “Now we have hundreds,” Ma-lin said. “So, we must be doing something right!”Come on down and enjoy this free event for great music, hot dogs, popcorn and refreshments. The event is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. on both days.
