dear friends,

i’d like to share a story about a young woman who was helped by boys & girls aid programming. her name was anna floyd. at the age of seven, anna found herself alone – her father had passed away when she was a baby, and after neighbors reported her mother’s abuse and neglect, anna was removed from her home. anna spent five years in three foster home placements until, at age 12, boys & girls aid found a loving and dependable rural oregon family who adopted her.

this success story could easily be one from our fiscal year 2008-2009. but it is not – anna came to boys & girls aid in the 1890’s, more than 120 years ago. What can we learn from the similarities between anna’s circumstances, and the circumstances of the children we serve today? We can see that a serious problem endures – children are without safe places to stay, and stable, loving adults to care for them. but while the problem endures, so does boys & girls aid.

We have been serving oregon’s children for 125 years. i continue to be moved by the generosity that has made our work possible. for a century and a quarter, donors like you have seen children in need in our community, and have selected boys & girls aid as the right agency to provide the solution.

it is my honor to report on our accomplishment during this busy past year and to share more stories of the children we have had the privilege of helping.

Warmest regards,

Michael h. balter executive director

i met Molly in 1963, while i was a social worker in Chicago. When i met her she was about six months pregnant and scared. she was a pretty girl, in her mid twenties, with long brown hair and brilliant green eyes. i remember thinking, “i hope the baby has her eyes.”

Molly’s boyfriend left soon after finding out about the pregnancy. in that era, being pregnant and not married, adoption was Molly’s only option.

at the time, babies were matched with families based on physical characteristics and economic class. Molly’s baby would go to a blue collar family with a similar education level as Molly and similar looks. a committee of social workers would be in charge of sifting through families to make the match. Molly had no role in choosing a family for her baby.

to avoid embarrassment for her parents, Molly was sent away from her hometown during the pregnancy. after the baby’s birth, Molly never saw the child, and she was expected to return to her home and never speak of the experience, pretending that nothing had happened.

recently, in my current work as supervisor of the infant adoption Program at boys & girls aid, i met a young pregnant woman named emily. about the same age, and with the same sparkling green eyes, emily took me back to my time with Molly. i was struck by how drastically different the experience of adoption was for these two women.

today, emily plays the key role in making choices for herself and her baby. emily came to adoption as a choice, after understanding all the options available to her. When her baby was born, she called boys & girls aid to find the perfect family. she looked through books with pictures and stories from families waiting to adopt an infant. she was struck by Mark and ellen, but wanted to meet them in person to be sure they were the right family for her child. after a face-to-face meeting, emily chose to sign the adoption papers, assured that she had made the best choice for her baby’s future.

emily, Mark, and ellen have an open adoption. Unlike Molly, who was not even allowed to see her baby, much less maintain contact, in today’s adoptions having continued contact is expected. birthparents share their medical history and exchange letters and pictures with the adoptive family. families also frequently have face-to-face meetings, according to a contract established during the adoption. this openness is much healthier for all involved – birthparents, families, and children.

although we believed the adoption practices of the 60-70’s were in the best interests of everyone involved, i am so thankful that today’s practices are very different. now the birthparents choose the adoptive family and can make the choice to have contact with the child. the adoptive family has information to share with their child as they grow up, and the child is able to have ongoing contact with the birth family.

ben is 13 years old, and he has been waiting in foster care for more than nine years. during that time, he has lived in 20 different homes. because ben is one of the children waiting longest in foster care, he was selected as a Wendy’s Wonderful Kid. this program, founded by the dave thomas foundation for adoption, provides skilled recruiters who put an extra effort into finding a permanent adoptive family for these special kids. boys & girls aid is the only agency in oregon working with this program.

While finding a family for ben is our staff’s first priority – we don’t stop there. this past fall, ben’s recruiter Kendra Morris-Jacobson noticed that the cast & crew of the deadliest Catch were attending a festival in astoria. her mind immediately went to ben, a big fan of the television show. she contacted the festival and convinced them to sponsor a trip-of-a-lifetime. ben traveled with his department of human services caseworker to the coast where he attended a private reception with his heroes.

When spring rolled around, Kendra’s mind was once again on the coast, and on plans to return ben to his favorite destination. she coordinated a truly special saturday that included a Maritime Museum visit; a fishing boat boarding; and a delicious salmon dinner. best of all, ben brought along his crab pot -that the astoria folks had given him in september - and used it to catch crabs on the beach. “these were two very special days for ben, and he’ll remember them forever,” said Kendra.

“the need is absolutely basic – every child needs and deserves a family to love them and a home to call their own.”

lucia was only 16, but the conflict with her mother had been going on for a long time. her mother suffered from mental illness, and this contributed to an unstable home, and recurring fights. lucia reached out for help, trying to live with her father, her siblings, friends and relatives across the state of oregon. Ultimately none of these were successful.

lucia heard about our safe Place shelter through friends. she knew that the shelter served homeless and runaway youth in the hillsboro area, the only one of its kind. she called to find out more, and to see if the program was right for her. after several phone conversations with staff, lucia moved into safe Place, where she lived for nearly three months.

in that time, with a stable living environment, lucia excelled. she completed her ged and researched long-term living options and colleges. in group and individual sessions with counselors and case managers, lucia learned the skills she would need to live on her own. today, lucia is living with a friend in California where she has enrolled in college and is awaiting scholarship money to help with the cost.

* new avenues for youth, return on reception, intervention, and case management, 2008.

$1 invested in early intervention may result in nearly $7 in cost savings by preventing and resolving problems before they become chronic.*
