Refugee Crisis Date For the Diary: Monday 5th October We know that many parents are keen to collectively contribute to the aid effort to help the current refugee crisis, and the school and PA have been exploring ways to achieve this. The crisis will be discussed with the children in school over the coming weeks in an age-appropriate fashion, and we have also partnered with The Salvation Army to organise a col-lection of various items which they can convert to funds within their shops to help the cri-sis. There is much red tape and legislation surrounding the donation of items to the refugees directly, and we are assured by The Salvation Army that all the funds raised from our collec-tion will go directly to their refugee appeal. Each child will receive a Salvation Army collection bag in their bookbag next week. If you wish to donate some items, filled bags should be brought to school at drop off on Monday, 5th October. The bags will be collected in the blue room library. The items requested by The Salvation Army are the following:

Clean clothes Shoes in pairs

Fashion accessories Household linen and textiles

We also encourage any parents who wish to discuss the crisis with their children to look at the following website: http://blogs.unicef.org.uk/2015/09/11/talk-children-refugee-crisis/ If parents are keen to volunteer their time on the morning of the collection, please contact Harriet Turnbull on [email protected]

Sponsored Charity Programme Update As parents will by now be aware, the trustees of our 2015-16 Sponsored Charity, Kids Com-pany, have very sadly decided to close the charity and have applied for it to be wound up. As such, it was no longer possible for us to donate the funds we raised last year to Kids Compa-ny. The PA Operating Committee met at the beginning of the school year to evaluate our options, and after careful consideration, we proposed that the funds be split among the four charities that were "runners up" in the sponsored charity selection process in 2014-15 and 2015-16. This proposal was on the basis that these charities, like Kids Company, all benefit children and young people in the UK; that they all meet the criteria for the GHPA Sponsored Charity programme; and that they all have enjoyed significant support from the Garden House parents. We asked parents to let us know via electronic ballot whether they were happy with this proposal, and we are pleased to report that the proposal from the Oper-ating Committee received 94% approval. The PA will be in touch with the relevant charities soon to distribute the funds raised. We thank you for your support.

PA Volunteering If parents are interested in hearing more about any of the PA committees for this year, please sign up on the notice board outside the dining room. Parents are also able to express an inter-est through the volunteer form which has been distributed by the class reps

Quentin Blake’s “Mr. Magnolia” is every bit as entertaining as you would expect. Beautifully illustrated, of

course, the book became a classic in the 1980s and remains so today. It is essentially a nonsense poem about

the eccentric Mr. Magnolia who has a number of unusual possessions, including a frog, a toad, a newt, some

very fat owls learning to hoot and some green parakeets which pick holes in his suit. Oddly, however, and as

the reader is constantly reminded, one of his boots is missing! The book is an excellent introduction to the

concept of rhyming words but is much more than that. Of universal appeal to younger readers, it is fun, crazy

and stimulating. Garden House Literacy Mouse

Use of Photographs At Garden House School, we are an open and inclusive community that is very proud of all of the achievements of all of our pupils

in their academic, artistic and sporting endeavours. We often celebrate these by using photographs of the children and their

achievements. Images of the children are securely stored on our internal server and systems and only accessible by staff members at the School.

However, we will often use photographs of the children on our newsletter and in the teachers’ weekly emails to parents. Photo-

graphs that have been taken during the year are often shared in yearbooks or on CDs and given out to parents at the end of the year.

They may also be used for promotional purposes, on our website, in our school magazine and prospectus.

As stated by school policy, any photographs shared by us with parents, or taken by parents at school events are for family use only

and should not be published on the web or elsewhere in any other media outlet or publication, in either printed or electronic form.

If you do not consent to images of your child being shared through any of the mediums outlined above, please let the relevant office

know. If we do not hear from you, we will assume that you are happy for us to continue to use photographs of your child in this way.

Assembly Miss McDonald’s USII boys were our hosts this week. They decided to talk to us about some of the things they had learnt over their years at school, especially with regard to how we should speak to one-another. They used the acronym “THINK”, standing for Truth, Helpful, Inspire, Necessary, Kind. We should always think before we speak. What we say should be truthful, helpful, inspiring, necessary, and kind. They each gave us examples from their own lives about why these things were important. Very well said boys! After weekly winners, we welcomed and congratulated this year’s School Council members. The boys were reminded what an important and valuable role they will play in improving the school and the children’s experience at school. Well done to George Wormald, Arun Lal, Alaric Afriyie, Har-per Heyman, Vincent Giancola, and Aden Si-Ahmed all of whom join the School Council this year. We also congratulated our artist of the week, Jamie Charters. Show and tell for 2015/16 got off to an excellent start with a talk by Aden Si-Ahmed on caving. He told us about his caving adventures on a recent trip to Mexico. Aden showed us some of the kit you need for a successful caving expedition. This included a helmet and head lamp, a wetsuit, and a stout walking stick. We were told about how these caves featured in Mayan mythology and about some of the wildlife that can be found in them. Apparently Aden explored a cave that was almost three miles long. Well done Aden for speaking entirely without notes! William Ponset told us about his recent visit to the D-Day landing beaches in Normandy. He was full of fascinating facts about this invasion. William told us about the seaborne and airborne parts of Operation Overlord and some of the clever ruses that were adopted by the allies. These included dropping dummy parachutists and using chaff to disrupt radar. Alaric Afriyie gave us a confident and entertaining talk about his favourite amphibian, the crocodile. In particular the salt water or American crocodile. They have the strongest bite of any animal, yet their jaw muscles are actually quite weak. They can also go for weeks without food because they have a very slow digestive system. Alaric informed us that salt water crocodiles are extremely heavy; heavier even than Garden House teachers! After the terrifying description of these creatures it was with some relief that we heard that, so far as Alaric is aware, no salt water crocodiles live in the River Thames. Alfred Afriyie then stepped up to speak about diamonds. Alfred told us that the word “diamond” de-rives from the ancient Greek work “adamas” or “unbreakable”. Diamonds are the strongest natural-ly occurring substance and they are often used for drills. They need to be heated to 1292oF before they will melt. The ancients thought diamonds were tears of the gods or pieces of a falling star. Al-fred explained that in fact they are complex carbons. Diamonds can be found in many countries and it is often volcanic activity that pushes them up towards the surface. Recently a diamond was sold for £30m! Congratulations to Willow, our first winners of the weekly House Cup!
