Dear Friends, Today we begin the holy season of Advent. The Church teaches that Advent has a twofold character: We await and expect Christ to come again at the end times and we look back to his first coming as Jesus of Nazareth, his birth in Bethlehem. From today to December 16 we re-flect on his coming at the end. From Dec 17-24 to his birth at Bethlehem.

Our gospel for this year is Luke. Tomorrow we gather for the Sacrament of Penance at 7 pm at St Barnabas Church. If you cannot make this date, I will be present at Ss. Cosmas and Damian Church in Twinsburg on Sunday, Dec 16 at 6.30 pm. I will be on retreat this week from Monday to Thurs-day. No Masses will be celebrated Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday. Morning Prayer instead will be celebrated at 8.30 am in our adoration chapel Tuesday-Thursday. Friday evening December 7, at the 6:30 pm Mass we will celebrate the Solemnity of the Immaculate Con-ception. It is a holyday of obligation and the patronal feast of the United States of America. Mary con-ceived without sin, pray for us!

Mark your calendar: December 12 is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Bishop Amos will be with us to cele-brate the 6:30 pm Mass and our fiesta follows in our parish hall. God bless you,

The Liturgy of The Word

* 1st Reading: Jeremiah 33: 14-16 *

The days are coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfill the promise

I made to the house of Israel and Judah. In those days, in that time,

I will raise up for David a just shoot ; he shall do what is right and just in the land.

In those days Judah shall be safe and Jerusalem shall dwell secure;

this is what they shall call her: “The LORD our justice.”

The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

* Response * Robert J. Thompson Psalm 25: 4-5, 8-9, 10 and 14

1. O LORD, make me know your ways, Teach me your paths. Guide me in your truth, and teach me; for you are the God of my salvation. I have hoped in you all day long. ♫

2. Good and upright is the LORD; he shows the way to sinners. He guides the humble in right judgment; to the humble he teaches his way. ♫

3. All the LORD’s paths are mercy and faithfulness, for those who keep his covenant and commands. The LORD’s secret is for those who fear him; to them he reveals his covenant. ♫

* 2nd Reading: Thessalonians 3:12 – 4:2 *

Brothers and sisters: May the Lord make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we have for you,

so as to strengthen your hearts, to be blameless in holiness before our God and Father at the coming of our Lord Jesus with

all his holy ones. Amen.

Finally, brothers and sisters, we earnestly ask and exhort you in the Lord Jesus that,

as you received from us how you should conduct yourselves to please God and as you are conducting yourselves

you do so even more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus.

The word of the Lord. THANKS BE TO GOD.

* Gospel *

Luke 21: 25-28, 34-36

Jesus said to his disciples: “There will be signs in the sun, the moon, and the stars,

and on earth nations will be in dismay, perplexed by the roaring of the sea and the waves.

People will die of fright in anticipation of what is coming upon the world, for the powers of the heavens will be shaken.

And then they will see the Son of Man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

But when these signs begin to happen, stand erect and raise your heads because your redemption is at hand.

“Beware that your hearts do not become drowsy from carousing and drunkenness and the anxieties of daily life,

and that day catch you by surprise like a trap. For that day will assault everyone who lives on the face of the earth.

Be vigilant at all times and pray that you have the strength to escape the tribulations that are imminent

and to stand before the Son of Man.”

The Gospel of the Lord. PRAISE TO YOU, LORD JESUS CHRIST.

Verses 1. O Lord of Light, our only hope of glory, your radiance shines in all who look to you, come, light the hearts of all in dark and shadow. ♫ 2. O Spring of Joy, rain down upon our spirits, our thirsty hearts are yearning for your Word, come, make us whole, be comfort to our hearts. ♫ 3. O Root of Life, implant your seed within us, and in your advent, draw us all to you, our hope reborn in dying and in rising. ♫ 4. O Key of Knowledge, guide us in our pilgrimage, we ever seek, yet unfulfilled remain, open to us the pathway of your peace. ♫ 5. Come, let us bow before the God who made us, let ev’ry heart be opened to the Lord, for we are all the people of his hand. ♫ 6. Here we shall meet the Maker of the heavens, Creator of the mountains and the seas, Lord of the stars, and present to us now. ♫

Open the eyes of my heart, Lord!

December 2, 2018

Today begins the new liturgical cycle: Cycle C, Gospel of Luke. The liturgy of Advent seeks to prepare us to enter fully into the mystery of Jesus Christ’s coming. The first and second Sunday of Advent centers around the future coming of Christ. The Third Sunday focuses on the present coming. The Fourth Sunday is on the birth of Jesus. Advent and Christmas form a unity. We cannot engage in one season without reflecting upon the other. We are reminded during this beautiful season of Advent that we are able to find signs of hope even in the most troubling times and moments of our lives. Luke tells us that we are not to be greedy but to share with the poor and the less fortunate. Just as Jesus called His followers disciples, we too are called to discipleship. It is not an easy task, but we cannot work on our own terms. The gospel says that perseverance is required. We are always to be prepared and ready! Such readiness can only take place through prayer and conscientious living of our lives. Luke’s gospel is known as the gospel of compassion, mercy and forgiveness. Luke’s Jesus was caring toward all people, freely offering salvation and forgiveness to those who turn away from sin. Luke’s gospel is also known as the gospel of prayer. The apostles are to devote themselves to teaching and fellowship, breaking of bread and prayers.

“All-powerful God, increase our strength of will for doing good

that Christ may find an eager welcome at His coming and call us to His side in the kingdom of heaven,

where He lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit One God. For ever and ever. Amen.”
