Each of our thirteen boats is bespoke – designed and hand-built by us. We lead the way in narrowboat design in the UK with such features as a home cinema, an on-deck hot tub, four-poster bed, wood-burning stoves and bow thrusters. In fact, some of our boats are not even very narrow! They range from an Edwardian-style boat for two to a wide Dutch barge for six. Whichever vessel you choose, be prepared for your immaculate boat – painted in classy British racing green and cream – to be admired as you cruise past other holiday-makers.

Considered by many to be Britain’s most picturesque waterway, the tree-lined Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal has a unique attribute – it’s high up. For much of its route from Brecon to Cwmbran, the canal hugs the mountainsides overlooking the Usk valley at around 300 feet above sea level, so you’ll be rewarded with incredible views of the National Park with virtually no effort. And it has one of the longest lock-free stretches of waterway in Britain – over 25 miles from the southern terminus of the canal. So you can spend a week on one of our boats without having to operate a single lock. In its entire length of 36 miles it has only 6 locks. But it’s not short of fascinating heritage: a 375-yard tunnel, an aqueduct, 5 lift bridges (including one where the traffic stops for you!) and an abundance of stone bridges,

lime kilns and historic wharves. Our own wharf at Llanfoist dates back to the early 1800s and features in Alexander Cordell’s bestseller, Rape of the Fair Country. Located within Blaenavon World Heritage Site, it was built to transfer pig iron from the tramroad, which came down the side of the Blorenge mountain to the canal, and then across the world via the port of Newport. Originally a hive of industry, Llanfoist Wharf is now a tranquil spot nestled amongst the trees. The Grade II-listed buildings and a replica dram remind visitors of its past. The warehouse is our home and office, and provides facilities for our customers; Wharfinger’s Cottage, originally the home and workplace of the man in charge of the wharf, is our self-catering holiday cottage for 6 people.

Quite simply, we aim to provide you with the best narrowboats and the highest level of service you’ll find on any of Britain’s waterways. While annual inspections from Visit Britain cannot tell the whole story, each of our boats has been awarded the coveted 5 stars. From the initial designs to the finishing stage, we set out to give you every possible comfort and convenience on your holiday. In fact this is probably the only fleet of 5 star boats on the entire UK canal network. Unlike some cruises, holidays with Beacon Park Boats do not start from an untidy boatyard shared by several hire firms. You will arrive at our historic wharf, park your vehicle in our gated car park, be welcomed with coffee and cake and learn the ropes from us.

5 reasons to choose Beacon Park Boats

Welcome to Beacon Park Boats, a family-run business offering narrowboat holidays on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in the Brecon Beacons National Park, South Wales. We – Alasdair and Sarah Kirkpatrick – run every aspect of the business from our private wharf at Llanfoist, just outside Abergavenny. In Beacon Park Boats we combine our love of design, craftsmanship, boating, engineering and hospitality.

Right from the start we set out to be different. Here’s the nitty-gritty so you can see exactly what we offer.

1. Individually-designed boats 2. The perfect canal 3. Five star

As a family that’s used to messing about on boats of all kinds, we’ve picked up a great deal of useful information over the years. We use this, together with our local knowledge, to provide those extra things which can make the difference between a rough holiday and one that’s plain sailing. We believe we can provide most landlubbers with a holiday experience on water that runs smoothly. Perhaps you’re considering going on a canal for the first time or maybe you’ve narrowed it down to a few waterways – please ask us any questions and we’ll give you honest answers. All our customers receive a bespoke Information Pack containing:

• a 40-minute DVD (produced by Beacon Park Boats) explaining how to operate your boat

• a copy of John Norris’ indispensible guidebook The Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal

• details of what’s on your boat (or in the cottage), to avoid bringing unnecessary things

• recommended itineraries to help you get the most out of your holiday

• simple directions to our wharf.

Then when you arrive here at Llanfoist Wharf, one of us (Alasdair or Sarah) will spend time giving you a detailed handover, which is audited and approved by the British Marine Federation. Before you set off you’ll know how to handle the boat and the equipment aboard, and you’ll take a practice cruise. In the unlikely event that you need help during your holiday, we’re always on call and will endeavour to be with you within the hour.

On a boating holiday, there is always plenty to do on the water itself, not least steering your boat, but our fleet is designed with relaxation in mind. All our narrowboats have large cruiser-style open rear decks so the helmsman need never be alone. For effortless manoeuvring around bends choose one with a bow thruster – jets of water which can move the front of the vessel sideways with the simple push of a button located on the rear deck. Usually found only on privately-owned boats, it’s a major selling point for many of our customers, who prefer not to use the traditional barge pole. All our boats are powered by quiet and efficient diesel engines, which are in immaculate condition; we’ll show you during the handover.

Choose from a long weekend, a midweek break, a week or, for even better value, a holiday lasting 10, 11 or 14 nights. Holidays can start on Mondays, Fridays or Saturdays, and with just a few boats starting on each day we’re never in a rush to get to the next customer. We also offer a two-centre holiday which combines time on a narrowboat with a stay in Wharfinger’s Cottage at Llanfoist Wharf.

Our narrowboats are available for hire from 15th March (when the canal re-opens to navigation after its annual period of winter maintenance) until 4th November. Wharfinger’s Cottage may be booked right throughout the year. So you can now experience the delights of the Mon & Brec – as locals call it – in every season.

All our boats have large open rear decks so the helmsman need never be alone.

Firstly, your boat will feel spacious inside. These are not dark, cramped conditions where you’ll be falling over each other. There’s at least 6’ 2” headroom and we’ve placed large windows in the open plan living areas to maximise light and let you enjoy the magnificent views. There’s room for your belongings; under every bed and settee you’ll find pull-out storage which is easy to access. Each boat has an LCD television/DVD player and CD/DAD radio with IPOD dock. In our larger boats these are found in the private cabins as well as in the lounge. In Osprey you’ll get a complete cinema system, with a 3ft pull-down screen and surround sound!

A good night’s sleep is essential for a happy holiday, so all our boats have fixed beds with sprung mattresses. Other beds convert to seating during

the day, and all use the highest quality cotton bed linen. Owl has a 5ft four-poster bed, Harrier a 5ft half-tester, Kestrel a wonderful airy 5ft double and Osprey, our largest boat, has two 5ft x 6ft 6in doubles..

The bathrooms have porcelain sanitaryware, a shower with doors (not curtains), a toilet which flushes at the push of a button, a constant supply of hot water, fluffy white towels and Gilchrist & Soames toiletries. Some boats have two bathrooms, Harrier has a roll-top slipper bath, Owl has a hot-tub on the deck and Heron has a luxurious wet room with his and her basins and mirrors.

In the galley, clever design ensures space for a full-size fridge and cooker, and most boats also have a microwave and a Dualit toaster. We provide a picnic table and enough chairs for everyone.

Use them on the canal bank or, if you hire one of our five wide beam barges, there’s room to put them on the rear deck of the boat.

The electricity supply onboard will power the appliances guests typically wish to bring on holiday, including mobile-phone charger, laptop, video game consoles and hair-straighteners. But many hair-dryers are too powerful so we provide a suitable one on each boat.

It almost goes without saying that within the smartly-painted strong steel hull, you’ll find the very highest specification finishes: oak, beech, mahogany, walnut and ash panelling and flooring, granite worktops, brass light fittings, wool carpets and designer fabrics.

Unrivalled luxury

beaconparkboats.com

‘Luxury’ is not normally the word used to describe a narrowboat. But then our boats – all named after birds – are not normal, not off-the-peg. At Beacon Park Boats we design luxury into each boat and we never compromise on quality.

Don’t book this holiday unless you’re prepared to slow down. With an average speed of just 2½ mph, you’ll have little choice. This change of pace inevitably leads to a fresh appreciation of the people and places around you. You’ll be spoilt with opportunities to get close to nature, without even leaving your boat. Feed the ducks. Spot a kingfisher, a heron, a red kite. Listen to the spring lambs bleating. Watch the cows watching you. Try and hook a carp. Capture it all in a sketch or photograph.

Step onto dry land and you’re in walking country – from the gentle towpath to the challenging mountains. Near the canal you’ll also find bike hire, horse-riding and the beautiful river Usk – one of Britain’s best salmon rivers. The bustling town of Abergavenny, complete with markets, castle, Priory Church, independent shops and annual Food Festival, is just 1½ miles away from our base

at Llanfoist Wharf. Heading north, the canal passes through a number of old villages where you can buy your daily paper, milk and bread – try Govilon, Gilwern, Llangynidr and Talybont. Picturesque Crickhowell is a gentle stroll away, over the 17th century stone bridge which crosses the river Usk. At the very end of the canal, the historic town of Brecon, is a lively mix of old and new, with its cathedral, military museum, markets and canalside theatre.

Back on deck, settle down with a good book and a glass of wine or simply relax with your family and gaze at the constantly-moving scenery, delighting in pointing out each feature in the landscape. Even cooking in your high-spec galley can be a leisurely affair or there’s the choice of many canalside pubs and restaurants.

You’ll find plenty of space on the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal. That may surprise you, considering the queues of boats on some other waterways. But being unconnected to the rest of the British waterway network has its advantages. This spacious feeling is enhanced by the vast vistas round every corner, the breathtaking mountain peaks and the fact that you can choose when to move and where to moor up. Find a beautiful spot and stay there for a few hours, or perhaps overnight. More likely than not, you’ll have it all to yourselves. Well, you and the wildlife.

It’s an adventure suitable for all ages – one of the easiest ways of going on holiday together and keeping all family members happy. Children usually have more freedom than they do at home and four-legged friends will relish the outdoor life. Many of our customers bring their pets (and we do not charge for them) but our cleaning is so rigorous you’d never know.

The Mon and Brec canal has just 36 miles of navigable water, which sounds like a morning commute for many people. Certainly, there are plenty of UK waterways where you can cover huge distances but, then, you may need to – in order to grab an empty mooring spot or just to find the next interesting place to visit. In our laid-back world in the Brecon Beacon National Park, the Mon & Brec’s relatively short length offers an abundance of things to fill a week or two, let alone a short break. Hardly 100 yards pass without spotting some friendly wildlife, anticipating the next historic feature round the corner or arriving at a delightful village to explore. As a general rule, a leisurely round trip to Talybont-on-Usk will fill a 3-night break, while a week will take you to Brecon and back.

You may also wish to start your holiday on a particular day of the week, so note that certain boats have specific start days, and some are available for short breaks. Each of our boats is inspected annually by Visit Britain and we indicate the grading as . Visit our website for detailed information and photographs of each boat.

Here are plans of our fleet of thirteen boats to help you decide which one is best for your holiday. Consider in particular how many beds you need and whether you prefer fixed beds or beds that convert to seating during the day. If a boat sleeps 6, with 4 people in fixed beds and 2 sleeping on the converted settee, we indicate this as + . In the majority of our boats with a rear cabin, it’s possible to sleep a third child on a mattress between the two single beds, increasing the maximum capacity of the boat; please ask us for further details. And remember in general - the wider the boat, the wider the beds. For really easy manoeuvring, choose a boat with a bow thrusters (see page 4).

Stay at Wharfinger’s Cottage, on our private wharf, and you’re holidaying in a fascinating piece of history. Situated in the most admired location on the Mon & Brec, this Grade II-listed building is our holiday cottage for 6 people.

Originally built as the home and office of the wharfinger (the man who managed the busy wharf), it offers accommodation on three floors. The kitchen, utility room and dining room are on the ground floor with a large lounge on the first floor, having extensive views of the surrounding mountains. There are three double bedrooms, one of which can be made up as twin beds. One bedroom is en-suite and there is a large family bathroom. Flagstone floors, beamed ceilings and wood-burning stoves combine with thick pocket-sprung mattresses, contemporary bathrooms and a well-equipped kitchen complete with Aga to make this the perfect holiday home. As with our boats, prices are inclusive of utilities, logs and pets, and we provide all the essentials including cleaning materials, dishcloths, tea towels, towels and toilet rolls.

The lawned garden fronts onto the canal and there are several outdoor seating areas. Behind the cottage,

as well as parking spaces, you will find an extensive broadleaf woodland on the slopes of the Blorenge mountain, just waiting to be discovered.

Wharfinger’s Cottage is ideally placed for you to explore areas out of reach of the canal. Located in both Blaenavon World Heritage Site and the Brecon Beacon National Park, there are endless destinations within a short drive. Go down Big Pit, take a trip on Pontypool and Blaenavon railway, visit castles galore, walk in the Black Mountains, discover ancient churches, young vineyards and thriving craft centres. No more than an hour’s drive away is Cardiff and, a little further afield, some of the best beaches in Britain.

Wharfinger’s Cottage is available all year. Stay here before or after exploring the canal on one of our boats; we offer flexible stays of 3, 4 or 7 nights. Or simply book the cottage on its own and enjoy the Mon & Brec from your garden. Come in the height of the season and watch the canal spring into life each day or escape here after the boats have stopped cruising and see a different side to this amazingly beautiful waterway.

Combine your canal holiday with a stay in our historic cottage.

AT LLANFOIST WHARFPuddLeRS

Limited edition Mon & Brec bookAlasdair and Sarah’s interest is not just in hiring luxury canal boats, but in the history of the ‘Mon & Brec’ canal. A few years ago they started collecting works from a local artist and historian Michael Blackmore, which interpret depicted scenes from the canals past.

Prompted by the 200 year celebrations we teamed up with Michael to publish a book which celebrates the Monmouthshire & Brecon Canal through some 40 detailed illustrations by Michael and succinct notes by Alasdair appear alongside each illustration, providing insightful commentary on the much-loved Mon & Brec.

The significance of the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal in the area’s industrial past and its key position today in the Brecon Beacons National Park and Blaenavon World Heritage Site is vividly brought to life in this highly-collectable book.

Price: £20 plus £2.70 postage FREE DELIVERY if you purchase the book at the same time as booking your holiday.
