“Be the Change

in the World”

Dear BPW Sisters, First and foremost, thank you for carrying on without much leadership this year. In visiting locals this year, I am amazed at how much you have accomplished in your communities. It was great meeting so many wonderful members who are “women helping women” every day. I would also like to thank the Executive Secretary, Executive Board, and Committee Chairs for all the behind scenes work you have done all year long. This organization would not exist without your efforts and support. This year has flown by for me. When Covid-19 hit in March, my work-life took on a new life that has consumed me. We will be staying in custom-made cabins with porches and green spaces set among tall cedars and oaks. Maybe the weather will cooperate and we can sit around a campfire, catch up and share some laughter. We all could use a little laughter.

I’ve learned a few things about myself during this pandemic. Stress for me comes out as manic behavior. I also let fear

and anxiety take over, I get snappy, I pull away from others, I lash out and have pity parties, I put off making decisions or completing tasks. None of these behaviors are healthy. But you know what? CALL TO CONVENTION

By virtue of the power vested in me as President of the Kansas Federation of Business and Professional Women’s Clubs, Inc. I do hereby call the Hundredth and First Annual Convention to meet at the Acorns Resort, Milford, Kansas from September 18 – 19, 2020. Dana Rickley, President BPW/Kansas 2019-2020

President Elect’s Message

BPW/Kansas:

“A League of Our Own.”

Are YOU batting 1000?

If any of you are like me, when the seriousness of COVID 19 set in and I realized that life as I knew it was gone for the foreseeable future, I started making an ultimate to-do list. I thought ‘if I can’t get out and about then I am going to spend time doing this … and this … and that and before you know it, I will be ALL CAUGHT UP!!!’ Did you do that also? Did you smack all of those to-dos right out of the ballpark? I’m still working on my list and while I am making progress it isn’t going quite as fast as I thought or hoped it would. I don’t want to take away from the seriousness or devastation this virus has cast upon us – many have suffered great loss in a variety of ways. However, I want to encourage you to take some positive from it as well. Did you get to slow down a little bit and miss some meetings without feeling guilty? Did you get to work at home in your comfy pajamas? Do you still have your job? Did you get to spend more time with your family? Did you receive a stimulus check to help offset additional expenses and hardships? Have you gotten to this point without contracting the virus? Is your family healthy? I pray that even if you couldn’t keep that perfect batting average, that you still kept it high! President Dana had an amazing year planned for us. I’m so sad for all of us that we missed the opportunities of bonding, learning, and laughing that she lined out for us. I’m also tremendously saddened for her. She put a lot of time, effort, ideas, and energy into planning three meetings for us and only gets to carry out about 1 ½ times what she planned. When you see Dana at Convention/Fall Conference please let her know how much you appreciate her! I hope she will give it another go in the future!

I’d like to say that I am 100% ready to be installed as your President. In heart, I most definitely am! My mind and my heart are racing with enthusiasm and ideas that I am so excited to share with you. But let’s face it, it’s hard to plan that first meeting when you don’t even know if you’re going to be able to gather in person! So, I graciously ask that you stay in my dugout and keep rooting for our team! Just in case you haven’t noticed – my theme is tied to the sport of baseball. I don’t want to give it all away now – but I suppose I owe you at least a tidbit so … my theme for 2020 - 2021 is BPW/Kansas: A League of Our Own. We each leave a unique mark – a legacy if you will – and together we create a league of amazing women! I look forward to exploring everything that means with all of you this coming year. We may not have ‘America’s Game’ in its normal fashion this year. We might not even have it at all. But we WILL have baseball in BPW/Kansas this year. So, while working on wrapping up that isolation to-do list or anything else for that matter – swing for the fences! Jenny Myers, President Elect

COVID PRECAUTIONS FOR STATE

CONVENTION/FALL CONFERENCE 2020

====================================== We need to take every precaution to keep ourselves safe and healthy. This starts with taking care of ourselves by staying hydrated, eating a well-balanced diet, getting plenty of rest and daily exercise. The responsibility begins and ends with each of us. We are very lucky to have such a secluded venue with plenty of open spaces. At Acorns Resort, we will be able to social distance by the way the meeting room is arranged. Hand sanitizer will be available as well. Please bring a facemask for your personal use and the protection of others. When we aren’t able to be socially distant, we should wear a face mask. Below are some other strategies we can use.

● Maintaining social distance.

● Washing hands frequently with soap and water for

at least 20 seconds.

● If soap and water is not available, use hand

sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

● Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth.

● Distance yourself from others, especially if you are a

senior or have a medical condition that puts you in a

high-risk category

● Cover your mouth and nose with a cloth mask when

in public. Governor Kelly signed an Executive

Order mandating mask use beginning July 3.

● Cover coughs and sneezes with an elbow or tissue,

throw the used tissue away and immediately wash

your hands.

● Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces

daily -- including phones, keyboards, doorknobs,

handles and light switches.

Your executive committee looks forward to an educational and fun filled weekend and hopes you are able to join us as we combine State Convention and Fall Conference!

DUES $ 0.16 per day; $ 5.00 per month; or $ 60.00 per year - no matter how you look at it - it’s one heck of a deal! (More on this amazing ‘value’ at Fall Conference … ) Some locals are willing to accept installments for next year’s dues on a monthly basis. $5.00 per month is sometimes easier to find than $60.00. Check with your local treasurer, if this option appeals to you. Membership dues are due as of July 1st. Dues need to be submitted to Treasurer Miranda Naylor, 1751 NW 38th St., Apt 108, Kansas City, MO 64116. If you have any

ISSUES MANAGEMENT ====================================== Women’s Suffrage In a case that generated controversy, Susan B. Anthony was arrested for voting in the presidential election of 1872. The judge directed the jury to deliver a guilty verdict. When he asked Anthony (who was not permitted to speak during the trial) if she had anything to say, she responded with what historians have called “the most famous speech in history of the agitation for woman suffrage”, she said, “You have trampled underfoot every vital principal of our government. My natural rights, my civil rights, my political rights, my judicial rights, are all alike ignored.” The judge sentenced Anthony to pay a fine of $100. She never paid it. Although he wanted to place her in prison, it never happened. By August 1920 – women were finally granted the legal right to vote. This was established over the course of more than half a century. Susan B. Anthony led the first National suffrage organization for women. Women fought hard for this right, they were imprisoned, jailed, and tortured. August 4 Kansas will vote in the primary election if they are registered as a Democrat or Republican. (Must declare a party to vote in the primary election in Kansas.) As we gear up for a November Presidential Election, 100 years since women were given the right to vote, please encourage everyone to get out to vote if they haven’t already. As part of Issues Management, keeping up with current issues is one way in which we can support all the suffering women had to go through to earn the right to vote. It emphasizes the rights we are privileged to have today. Whether we are reminding each other why it is important to vote, or preparing others by reminding them where we have come from since the late 1800’s, it is imperative that we exercise our rights. Being the ‘keeper’ of data for Woman of the Year and Business of the Year is almost complete. The voting has happened, all we need to do is acknowledge the achievements. We have people to honor! Come and help us share in these recognitions. You know how important it is to acknowledge these special people from each of our communities. I look forward to all of this happening in September. Please encourage participation from all whom you can to attend our joint convention and conference. Shalom. Cindy Simons, Issues Management Chair

NOTES FROM SHARON CARPENTER ====================================== (Editor’s note: Chuck, Sharon’s husband passed away April 4, 2020. He accompanied her to many state meetings and was a friend to many BPW members,)

5/14/2020 Dear BPW Sisters, I cannot say how deeply your words, cards, letters and donations to our scholarship foundation mean to me. Chuck enjoyed coming to the meetings and looked forward to seeing several he considered a friend. It was so nice you welcomed him. I am having tests to see if I can get my hip replacement maybe 1st of June. I am staying with my daughter at 20542 W 201st Street, Spring Hill, KS 66083-8371. 7/2/20 Dearest BPW friends, Thank you seems inadequate to say to all you wonderful BPW members. All the cards and letters of encouragement have meant so much with the passing of my husband and my recent hip surgery. My hopes are to get to convention/conference in September. It is so sad we have this virus to keep us from enjoying life as we know it. My thanks for the donations to Foundation Scholarship in Chuck's name. He enjoyed coming with me to the meetings and loved the friendship you extended to him. Love and thanks to such great friends, Sharon Carpenter

WANTED: ITEMS FOR SALE

====================================== Foundation Clothes Closet and Silent Auction Kansas BPW Educational Foundation will host a gently used Clothes Closet and a Silent Auction during the BPW/Kansas state convention/fall conference September 18-20, 2020. Bring an item or two for display for others to bid on and of course you might find treasures that you can take home. With everyone having time to clean out closets, I’m sure many have found treasurers they would like to share and help benefit Foundation and the scholarship program. A rack will be available for the clothes and a table for the silent auction treasures. Persons donating silent auction items set the beginning bid price. If an item does not sell, the person donating retains ownership. As always thank you for your ongoing generosity to the Kansas Business and Professional Women’s Educational Foundation. Your faithful commitment to providing educational dollars to those in need is gratefully appreciated.

POLICY AND PROCEDURE CHANGE

======================================

A recent review of the BPW/Kansas Bylaws and Policy and Procedures manual (P&P) shows there is a need for an update to current policy and procedures. A member running to fill a state office must submit three items, one of which effectively prohibits a member-at-large from seeking or holding an elected position, such as President-Elect, Vice President, Secretary or Treasurer. Several of the state members do not have a local close to their home locations and have opted to become a member-at-large. In order to enable all who might consider one of these positions, changes to the procedure need to occur. The suggested change would eliminate item A.1.a.(1.) Copy of minutes of the local organization meeting at which the candidate was endorsed. It would then rename (2) and (3) as (1) and (2). Item A.4. the statement “endorsed by local organization” would be deleted in keeping with the above change. See the current Policy and Procedure page below. The change is to the P&P therefore a vote may be conducted at any meeting of BPW/Kansas to enact this change.

BACK-UP PLAN

======================================

For Convention/Fall Conference

Let us start by saying that we can’t wait to see you all! We are REALLY hoping that when we SEE you that it is literally seeing you IN PERSON. However, as we are sure you’ve all heard and seen, COVID 19 cases are once again on the rise in Kansas and perhaps maybe with even more fury than the original wave. We are putting a lot of time and thought into preparing a fun filled (and we do mean FILLED) weekend that will encompass both the Convention and Fall Conference in September.

We have already missed a Spring Conference and we have business that needs addressed… With that said, we are also working on a back-up plan in the event that it is unsafe for us to meet in person in September.

This back up plan would be in the format of a virtual meeting. Most likely this would mean locals gathering and using one connection to join an electronic meeting. This is being planned only as a last resort but we wanted you to be aware that it is a possibility.

As we continue to work on ALL of our plans, we will continue to send any and all notifications through LewAnn Schneider, Executive Secretary. Keep an eye on your email inbox!

We both wish to thank you as you have been very patient and understanding while we have had to make difficult decisions. Your support is felt and genuinely appreciated by both of us!

Dana Rickley, President Jenny Myers, President Elect
