CHAIR & CEO

The beginning of 2011 was marked by a series of major natural disasters. The Queensland floods and Cyclone Yasi had a devastating impact on communities right across the state.

While the majority of clubs survived these disasters unscathed, some weren’t so lucky. A number of clubs were badly hit when floodwaters swept through the state.

These clubs have worked tirelessly over the last 12 months to get business back to some form of normality. They should be commended on the efforts of their members and the community.

Bowls Queensland assisted as best it could under the circumstances and was able to distribute financial assistance through a fund that was established directly after the disaster.

Once the turmoil that greeted us in the New Year subsided it was business as usual and 2011 proved to be a successful year both on and off the green.

The bowls season started directly after the Annual General Meeting with the Australian sides being played at Nelsons Bay in NSW.

Queensland’s ladies provided the perfect start to the year, winning the series. The men performed admirably, however they were unable to repeat the performances of the past three years.

Our bowlers then ventured to the nations capital for the test series against the ACT and completed a clean sweep of the men’s, ladies’ and under 25 competitions.

Unfortunately, the next test series against NSW didn’t deliver the same results, with NSW winning all tests. The juniors, although struggling against NSW in their test series, were extremely successful at the Australian Championships

winning gold in the girls pairs and triples, silver in the girls singles and boys pairs, and bronze in the boys singles. The girls’ performances saw them win the overall championship.

The Over 60’s visited Warilla in NSW for the Senior State Sides Championships, where the men won their fourth national title. The ladies finished a creditable second in their first year of attending this event.

While the state teams continued to perform well, the Board, which was elected at the AGM in March, continued the good work of the previous custodians and was successful in completing the constitution to a level that saw it adopted unanimously by the council.

In conjunction with the constitution, new by-laws and a new disciplinary policy have also been put in place. This sees the organisation now having clear and concise governing documents that enable decisions to be made without the contradiction of the previous documents.

The boundary review was also continued, however, with the proposed change in the poker machine legislation the board determined that until the outcome of this legislation was finalised and the impact on bowls clubs throughout the state fully known the boundary review would be placed on hold and revisited in due course.

2011 also saw Bowls Australia obtain funding to enable them to employ staff to conduct development and coaching programs. The development program will see the role of development in each state come under the control of Bowls Australia. However, the Bowls Queensland board, after three separate meetings with Bowls Australia and upon careful consideration of all the information in relation to this program, determined that the existing Bowls Queensland development team would continue to perform this role as employees of Bowls Queensland.

The National Coaching program will see this role support national squad members in conjunction with the talent identification of prospective squad members. The employment of these positions is being undertaken. As a result of the implementation of both programs Bowls Queensland will no longer receive Nation Merchandise Program monies. These funds will be redirected to Bowls Australia.

In addition to these programs, Bowls Australia is investigating and looking to implement an insurance program. The program has a representative for Queensland on the panel and information will be forwarded as it received.

Throughout the year the CEO and a member of the Board visited districts to discuss everything Bowls Queensland related. These meetings where extremely well received by both the members and club officials, as they enabled questions to be asked and comments to be made in regards to Bowls Queensland operations.

Successful year...on and off the green

This was beneficial to Bowls Queensland as the feedback will be used to develop the strategic direction of Bowls Queensland for the next 10 years.

As you will read in the development report, every club had an opportunity for a visit in 2011, however some clubs declined. Along with this, through the development department, some changes have been made to the All Schools Cup and this year saw the event host more competitors than ever before.

The inaugural disability championships were held at Chermside this year. The event attracted 70 players and was extremely successful. The results of this event will see successful players selected to represent Queensland at the Australian Open. Bowls Queensland will support this team financially through monies receivedfrom government grants.

The Bowls Queensland Committees have continued their invaluable work throughout 2011. They are to be commended for their effort.

Overall 2011 has been a successful year for Bowls Queensland and bowls throughout Queensland. The feedback taken on board at the district meetings will be implemented as part of the strategic planning process early 2012.

As we move into 2012 Bowls Queensland will continue to receive feedback to ensure what is being done at state level assists clubs in making a solid foundation for our sport of bowls.

Development

State Development Manager, Brett Murphy

It is with pleasure that I present the annual report for the Development Team for 2011.

StaffingThis year has seen a continuation of increased activity in all

areas of development which we commenced in 2010. This would not have been possible without the support of the state development officers. Unfortunately, we started and finished 2011 with the loss of staff members. Sam Hunter left us early in January and was replaced by Vicki Stein, and Josh Thornton left us to take on a role with BA in November. Fortunately we have successfully recruited Steven Tong to replace Josh and we will commence the New Year uninterrupted.

Vicki has fitted into her role well and has shown a keenness to learn and eagerness to take the development of the sport to the next level. Unfortunately Vicki was involved in a horrific accident in August and she is not expected to return to work until sometime in 2012. In the interim we are employing a new development officer on a contract basis.

We are well prepared for the arrival of any new staff members in development, as the groundwork has been laid for replacements to step straight into the roles and continue the good work with no disruption to day to day proceedings.

We have also received funding through the Department of Sport & Rec Jobs Plan to put a regional development officer in the Toowoomba area, commencing in February 2012.

This role will be a great help and asset to the clubs who are involved in this project. Hopefully other regional districts will become involved in the next round of funding. It would be wonderful to have staff in all major regional centres.

Club VisitsWe continued club visits in 2011. There are several reasons

for these visits; the first and foremost being to offer assistance and support in certain areas at club level. These areas included strategic planning, grant writing, membership and volunteer recruitment and retention, promotional activities including barefoot, social and corporate bowls as well as come and try days, sponsorship, working with people with a disability, school bowls and junior programs.

We also surveyed clubs to ascertain participation numbers and to get more information on each club for inclusion in a club locator which will be included on our new website. These meetings are open for any interested members to attend and gives the opportunity to discuss these areas as well as any other issues that had arisen since our last visit.

Due to circumstances (Vicki’s accident & Josh’s departure) we haven’t managed to visit every club. At the time of writing we had visited 324 of our 341 clubs, with the hope we may be able to visit another 9 clubs prior to the Christmas break.

However if we don’t get to these clubs we will be there early in the New Year and will conduct a double visit. Then there were another 6 clubs who weren’t interested or couldn’t find the time to have a visit from the team. That is of course their prerogative, clubs are autonomous, but I do believe we will return to them next year once committees change.

Unfortunately 2 clubs (Ithaca and Highfields) closed before we could arrange visits for this year. These clubs, along with Maroochy Swan and Eton North, make up the 4 clubs that have closed this year. With Kingscliff choosing to move to NSW, it sees us end the year with 337 clubs in the Queensland.

Promotional VansThe promotional vans proved popular once again this year with

usage in 2011 the highest we have seen. The vans were used at a wide variety of functions including sports expos, school fetes, shopping centres and shows. The vans were used by 18 clubs, 3 districts, disability groups, government departments and private organisations.

On the 38 occasions that the vans were used, 5801 adults and children took the opportunity to try the sport in their own comfort zone. Hopefully we can see a flow on from these days and gain new members across the state.

Coaching CoursesWe have arranged and conducted 25 coaching courses again

this year (17 Club & 8 Introductory Courses). We will continue to work with districts in 2012 and arrange and conduct courses as required.

Partnerships2011 saw us further strengthen our association with our

Sports CONNECT partners (Sporting Wheelies, Lifestream, Deaf Sport & Rec Qld and Qld Blind Bowlers) by continuing our support of their events and holding our inaugural Multi-Disability State Championships. This event attracted 57 entries, from which a state team was selected to represent at the 2012 Australian Open to be held in Melbourne.

We were fortunate enough to receive funding through a Sport & Rec Active Inclusion grant, which enabled us to attend several school sport expos conducted by the Lifestream Foundation.

Additionally we conducted coaching courses for bowlers with a disability, enabling them to become coaches and coach their own players.

A flow on from our Sports CONNECT partnership has seen us working with the Endeavour Foundation and Spiral Inc, promoting the sport to their members.

All Schools Cup ChallengeThe All Schools Cup Challenge was once again successful

in 2011, with the format changed to pairs and district winners being able to contest the state final. This year 15 of our 20 districts entered a team and I hope this will increase in 2012 with the easier format.

2012 will also see us start implementing a primary school version of the above competition. We will also be continuing the work we have done in the past two years as outlined above.

High Performance

High Performance Manager / State Coach, Bill Cornehls

Bowls Queensland’s High Performance Program has been established to support and assist the development of players across the state. The role of High Performance is to assist bowlers in achieving at the level they desire.

The High Performance resources are available on the Bowls Queensland website. The program documents encompass representing expectations, mindsets, team positions, training drills, competition debriefs and several other areas involved in the game for districts, clubs and individuals.

Over the course of 2011 it has been another successful and busy season for Queensland. Queensland had a long season on the interstate competition front with the Australian Sides Championships, National Super 6 competition, Senior Sides, Australian Under 18 Championships, and then interstate competitions against Victoria, ACT, NSW, for the open and under 25 teams, and the annual under 18 interstate series against NSW. In addition to the competitions a number of training camps for the Queensland squads were conducted at Coorparoo Bowls Club.

Queensland returned victories in a number of events including Ladies Australian Sides Championships, Australian Under 18 Girls Championships, Men Senior Sides, Ladies Pairs National Super 6 Competition, and victories against Victoria and ACT in ladies, men, under 25 ladies and under 25 men. Throughout the year the performances by Queensland representatives have been good and as any bowler is aware you have your good days and bad days and this is the same with the state representatives but overall our representatives have performed extremely well when representing the state.

2011 saw another Bowls Queensland initiative implemented which enabled High Performance to assist the members throughout the state via coaching clinics. I have visited 2 districts and 19 clubs with approximately 500 members going through the clinics with more already scheduled for 2012. I conducted

the clinics at several clubs and worked with many members in Queensland to assist in improving their game. The Coaching clinics I have conducted follows on from the high performance program which I trialed in November 2010 in Tropical Far North Queensland. The clubs and districts visited throughout 2011 are Sunshine Coast ladies district, Brisbane district, Dalby, Tara, Chinchilla, Miles, Taroom, Rockhampton, Burnett, Merthyr, Kallangur, South Suburban Mackay, Tewantin/Noosa, Springwood, Brothers Edmonton, Babinda, Nambour Heights, Maroochydore Beach and Yeppoon.

To start any new program requires planning and development

of the program to create pathways for under 18’s and under 25’s. This ensures progression through the ranks into senior competitions and not just at state level but even club and district levels takes time and resources.

Early in the year I contacted Auckland Regional Bowls Centre to follow on from the visit to Queensland in 2010. After many e-mails and discussions it was decided a pathway development event for under 18’s and under 25’s be held in December 2011, where 24 players were sent an invitation and if accepted would tour Auckland to assist in their own personal development.

The tour will be an ongoing event after negotiations with Auckland and a return visit will take place in Queensland in 2012 and each year on a rotating basis. The event had a development training day and then competition over the next three days. The learning and development of skills is the main focus. The competition was 13 test matches in each age section over singles, pairs, triples and fours competition. This event will give the opportunity for youth members throughout Queensland in years to come to develop within the sport.

As we move into the 2012 season we will continue to modify and adapt what we have in place to ensure that Queensland bowlers are at the forefront.

Audit and risk

The main issues undertaken this year have been the updating of the Board Governance Policies, and the setting up of an Extreme Weather Policy for the Association.

Further to that we have upgraded the BQ Communications Policy to bring it into line with modern technology and communications streams.

The Governance Policy required some alterations that had become outdated and the Communications Policy required coming up to date with current processes such as Twitter and Facebook.

We had no Extreme Weather Policy and now BQ does for the protection of all members and players.

We also went through the Members Protection Policy and made several recommendations to bring it into line with the new BQ Constitution and By-laws.

Those recommendations are now before the association’s solicitors, Mullins Lawyers, for final acceptance and approval.

Committee Chairman, Doug Murray

Umpires

Since our appointment after the last AGM the committee has remained the same, comprising of Percy Tesch, Ivor Boon and myself, John Dawson. At our request, the board at the end of last year approved the expansion of our committee to 4 members in total. To date the extra position has not been filled. We spend a lot of our time interpreting laws and adjudicating on matters that have arisen from real situations. During each month we also mark exam papers for measurers, level 1 and 2 new umpires and reaccreditations, which we then approve or otherwise before recommending their appointments to Bowls Australia.

It was intended to continue appointing district umpire committees, who showed sufficient expertise, to be responsible for approving the accreditation of their own level 1 umpires and measurers. Unfortunately this was not part of Bowls Australia bowls officiating policy and has had to be discontinued. This ruling does not reflect adversely on any district umpire committee’s skills.

The number of new applications for umpire and measurers courses throughout Queensland is dropping and we must find a reason. The board have approved that the Umpire Committee should visit up to five districts each year. The purpose of these visits will be to have discussions with district umpire committees and also, if they wish, for us to attend umpire forums or discussion groups. In the first instance we would welcome invitations from any district who are interested.

This Committee was represented at a few of the Bowls Queensland events during the last year. They were the District Sides and State Championships in Brisbane North, the Champion of Champions at Bribie Island and the State Pennant Finals at Tweed Heads. I, independently, attended a number of other Bowls Queensland and Bowls Australia events. The reason for our representation at these events is so that we can give an immediate ruling on any umpiring issue or appeal that might otherwise have to be referred to the State Umpire Committee. This committee attending such events gives the assurance to the controlling body and players that should such an appeal arise the games are not going to be delayed because of having to fulfil the associated administrative procedures.

We are disappointed that the Editor of the Queensland Bowler, supported by the Board, has decided that the content for the umpire pages in the magazine will no longer be provided by this committee. They have said that should we need to communicate with bowlers and umpires throughout the State then we should utilise the BQ memo system or the BQ website. As this committee is no longer a contributor to the Queensland Bowler umpire pages we obviously cannot endorse or support any comment, interpretation or advice contained in it with regard to any Laws, Domestic Regulations or Conditions of Play.

As previously reported Bowls Queensland held an Umpire Discussion Group last year with representatives from all districts invited. It was very well attended and was supported by Bowls Australia. It would be interesting to see if there is sufficient interest for another one in the future.

Committee Co-ordinator, John Dawson

Coaching

Committee Co-ordinator, George Franklin

Since being appointed Coordinator on the 28th October 2011 the Coaching Committee consisting of Dennis O’Toole, Barry Gable and myself have been extremely busy working for all Clubs and Districts in Queensland.

Our first priority was forming Coaching Committee’s in all Districts. We have forwarded this information to all Districts via BQ Memos. We have had one request for assistance in forming a District Committee and also a skills workshop.

Our second priority was the initiation of Coach Skill Workshops. These workshops will commence in 2012 with one district already expressing an interest. A representative/s will visit this District on the first weekend in February 2012 to assist in setting up a District coaching committee and whilst there conduct a coaching workshop.

The reaccreditation of Intro & Club by Districts coaches was agreed to being most practical for District Committees to expedite. They are in the area and know their coaches. Districts should be receiving a copy of the requirements for reaccreditation early in the New Year. We discussed ways of coaches gaining the 60 points required. We suggested that Districts conduct Development workshops focusing on:

(1) Proper Communication Skills (2) Correct Demonstration Skills (3) Team Skills - such as Game Tactics, Head Building and

Beneficial Shot Selection. This workshop would attract 20 points toward accreditation,

providing proof of attendance was recorded.

Other issues that the Coaching Committee felt needed more attention are as follows;

- Increase confidence and competence in coaching ability;- Promote ongoing progressive improvement of knowledge

and expertise;- Incorporate a broad base of learning enabling a more in-

depth approach to coaching;- Promote the use of safe and correct techniques;- Improve communication skills;- Encourage the development of innovative coaching

techniques;- Increase the enjoyment of sport for coaches and players;- Encourage coaches to follow the coaching pathway to elite

coaching. Our committee’s goal is to change the generally held adverse

culture associated with Coaches and Bowls Queensland. We want to improve the credibility of coaches, the bowlers attitude to being coached and therefore obtain a level of respect.

It was resolved that each member of the committee hold a skill improvement coaching workshop in different Districts at least once or twice per year. Also that each would formulate a program suited to their own personal coaching style. This will be forwarded for discussion at our next committee meeting to ensure the coaching aims are followed.

I am very pleased with the cooperation of the BQ staff and support from the Board, the coaching committee needs this inspiration to make a valuable commitment for all Districts.

Men’s Section

It has been an honour and a privilege to serve as President of the Mens Section in 2011 and I thank the members for giving me the opportunity.

The Section started the year badly, as there were only two nominations submitted at the Annual General Meeting, that of myself as President and David Cunningham as Executive Member. This necessitated seeking members to fill the positions of Vice President and a second Executive Member. Kevin Goldie came to the fore after the Annual General Meeting and after a period as Executive Member assumed the position of Vice President. In April Des O’Neill was appointed Executive Member. With this appointment the Section was fully operational.

This year has provided a number of challenges. There has been some difficulty in identifying the respective roles of the section and the board. They have not proved in my view to be entirely satisfactory. We seem to have slipped away somewhat from the original concept of unification, where the board was to handle all administrative matters and finances, with the sections running the bowls events in their entirety. With further discussions between the board and sections, maybe this may change. Both the board and the sections may work better as a result.

I thank the members of the section for their commitment and support throughout the year.

My special thanks to the match committee, whose approach and dedication to all matters relating to our competitions ensure things continue to run smoothly. They have worked extremely hard throughout the year and are to be congratulated on the success of all State events.

The State Junior Championships hosted by the Sunshine Coast were a credit to both the Sunshine Coast and the match committee. The juniors are to be commended for their play and for their conduct on and off the green.

The District Sides were also very successful and congratulations go to the Brisbane North District for the conduct of the event and also winning the event.

The State Championships were equally successful.Other events held later in the year were also successfully

completed. The Mixed Pairs were held at Hamilton Bowls Club and the Champion of Club Champions was hosted by the Bribie Island Bowls Club.

The State Pennant finals were hosted by the Tweed Heads Bowls Club and were also very successful.

Congratulations to the winners of all these events and I wish to thank all the clubs that have hosted events for us.

I was able to attend a number of Districts for their President’s Days in an official capacity during the year and I thank all those Districts for their wonderful welcome and hospitality.

The results of the interstate matches are published in the selectors report.

Congratulations to all our representative players for their efforts.

I also congratulate our selectors for a job done extremely well. The results achieved reflect their experience and dedication.

To all the staff at Bowls Queensland I wish to express my sincere thanks for the assistance given to

myself and other members of the section throughout the

year.

Zone 1 – Raymond Rowles Zone 2 – Geoff HicksZone 3 – Lewis Breen Zone 4 – Peter StantonZone 5 – Carlo Campana (Committee Co-ordinator)

On behalf of the selection committee I have much pleasure to present this year’s report.

QLD vs VIC

Last February the Open side and Under 25s team travelled to Darebin Bowls Club (Victoria) to play at the annual interstate test series Queensland vs Victoria. I am pleased to say that in a very close encounter Queensland won two tests to one – the player of the series was Kelvin Kerkow.

At the same venue Queensland’s Under 25’s team, playing under the sets play, defeated Victoria two tests to one – the player of the series was Dean McWhinney.

Australian Sides

Last April the open and super six teams travelled to Nelson Bay Bowls Cub (NSW) to play at the National Championships. The selected Queensland side on paper looked strong, but on the field did not produce what was expected as they finished in fourth position. The Queensland Super 6 team came away with one bronze medal won by Brett Wilkie (singles) achieving an overall standing of fifth position. Prior to the National Championship Queensland defeated Tasmania two tests to nil.

QLD vs ACT

In September the Queensland open side and Under 25s played test series against ACT at Tuggeranong bowls club in ACT. The Queensland side performed as expected by going through undefeated to win three tests to nil – the player of the series was Nathan Rice. At the same venue Queensland’s Under 25’s also defeated ACT three tests to nil, as they

performed very well – the player of the series was Dean McWhinney.

Over-60’s

The Over 60’s side travelled to Warilla Bowls Club (NSW) to play at the annual round robin test series. The Queensland side played very well to win five of their six games. This was a terrific result, achieved by this (not so old) but very experienced side, to bring home the big cup – the player of the series was Geoffrey Brown.

QLD vs NSW

Queensland’s open side and Under 25’s teams played their annual test series against New South Wales at South Tweed Sports Club. On perfect sunny days, fast greens, with strong swirling wind, it was impossible to play consistent bowls. The three tests played went down to the wire, but a very poor performance by one of the Queensland’s teams, which lost three games, cost Queensland any chance of retaining the (Wall Currie Shield). The two other teams went through undefeated by playing top bowls – the player of the series was Kelvin Kerkow.

At the same venue the Under 25’s team, with two new players in for the first time, were playing under international rules, alternating players in different positions (singles, pairs, triples). Over the three tests this young talented team performed well and were unlucky to lose the series two tests to one – the player of the series was Dean McWhinney.

Under-18’s

Last July Queensland Under 18’s side, with three new players in the squad, played the annual test series vs New South Wales. This series was played at Cronulla Bowls Club (NSW). Queensland played quite well, but in the end New South Wales defeated Queensland two tests to one – the player of the series was Sean Ingham.

Junior Nationals

Last October Queensland’s Under 18’s side travelled to Darebin Bowls Club (Victoria) to play at the National Championships five-a-side. Queensland’s side performed quite well by winning two medals, bronze (singles), silver (pairs), to finish in third position overall – the player of the series was Sean Ingham.

Note: Sean Ingham and Rohan Wilson were selected into Australian Under 18 squad.

Finally congratulations to all players that represented Queensland in 2011. Congratulations to Nathan Rice, Sean Baker, Mark Casey and Brett Wilkie on winning international events while representing Australia. Thank you all for your efforts in representing your State and Australia. Thanks

My thanks to Bowls Queensland Mens Section and Bowls Queensland Board of Directors, Keith Fullerton and his office staff for your co-operation during year 2011.

Men’s Match

Another year has come and gone. We have witnessed great bowls with even greater bowlers. All events have seen some changes. The 2011 juniors at the Sunshine Coast was a great event even with the shortening of the event due to Easter and with the wet weather. The competitors should be congratulated for their assistance. We are hopeful of a rise in competitors in 2012 in Bundaberg Port Curtis DBA .

District sides and State Championships was another great event and well hosted by Brisbane North.

2012 will see us at the Gold Coast for both the Sides and the State Championships. The Sides will see the introduction of 20 Districts for the ladies with the inclusion of Southern Downs. The Committee has again been proactive by playing 3 man sections in singles thereby Clubs not having to find Markers till Post Sectional play, we have also initiated the over 60 pairs for the ladies.

My Thanks to Laurie Broomhead for the way he assisted us during the Champion of Club Champions. The State Pennant finals were played at Tweed Heads for the first time and the Club went out of their way to make all welcome.

I would like to give a special mention to Hamilton Bowls Club, Bribie Island Bowls Club and Tweed Heads Bowls Club for the way they not only assisted in the running of the events at their clubs but gave both committees every help and more to make the events special. Thank you.

Our ongoing relationship with Ladies Match committee has been great and as we say we are a great team and a good one at that. Thank you to Alison and her team. We both have had new members this year

The Match Committee worked extremely hard this year and has always tried to be proactive and not reactive. We are always looking to improve on what we do and in 2012 there will only be one entry fee for the State Championships which will include all green fees.

If there is a negative it is that the State will have to look at the boundary and group review sooner rather than later as we always encounter problems where two amalgamated Districts disagree.

In closing I would like to give a special thank you to the Bowls Queensland office staff for their tireless work that they give to our sport.

I wish the incoming committee all the best for 2012. Good bowling to all.

Committee Co-ordinator, Nev Galbraith

The joint Match Committees’ responsibilities to organise and run the state competitive program for 2011 is now complete.

The first event as always was the state junior titles, run at the Sunshine Coast. Our thanks to the Caloundra, Pelican Waters and Kawana Clubs for the hosting of this event, which required major re-scheduling due to the closure of Caloundra RSL Club, even though the sponsorship of the event continued. It was particularly pleasing to see the number of under 15’s entering, which may indicate a promising increase in our junior girls ranks. Allocation of the event to the Bundaberg/Port Curtis District in 2012 has met with a positive response, so it will hopefully be followed by good entries.

District Sides followed in the Brisbane North District, and State Championships in the metropolitan area. Thanks to all host clubs and their members. Numbers were very disappointing, but given the disastrous weather conditions that impacted so widely around the State in January, it was hardly surprising that entering in the state titles was not a top priority for many of our members.

Reviewing the program afterwards has led to a change of entry fees so that a small increase in the green fee component will mean that no post sectional green fees will be required. Singles sections of three instead of four will provide for a marker in each of the three sectional games, and much less impact on the host clubs. Sectional play in all four disciplines run on the first four days of the event will allow entrants not winning their sections the option of not extending their stay on the Gold Coast. And we introduce an over 60’s ladies pairs. Hopefully these modifications will meet with wide acceptance. The discussion item at the AGM re running championships locally with central finals met with little support.

The year’s competition was completed with Mixed Pairs, Champion of Champions and State Pennant finals, at Hamilton, Bribie Island and Tweed Heads respectively. We thank these clubs and their management and members for their hospitality and support in the conduct of these very prestigious events, which are always keenly contested.

Finally, my very grateful thanks to my committee ladies, Helen Doherty and Colleen Ryan, Neville Galbraith and the men on the match committee, our Section President Bev Higgins and her committee members and the Board Chair Ron Chambers and members for support of all our events. John Dawson and the umpires have been invaluable support in consideration of conditions of play and running of all events. The office staff, and Events Officer, Roxanne in particular have been constantly helpful and supportive. And to all our membership who have entered and supported the competition program. All our efforts would be futile without your support.

Committee Co-ordinator, Alison Duffey

Ladies’ Section

Section President, Bev Higgins

I am very pleased and proud to present my first report for the AGM.

It has been a fruitful year and to my committee Vice President Dawn Forrest, my two ladies who are serving on the section for the first time, Kay Ainsworth (Maranoa Warrego District) and Necia Creighton of (Southern Downs), I say a very big thank you. The experiences these ladies have had, has given them an insight into how BQ runs (section).

To my match Co-ordinator Alison Duffey and her hard working committee, what a great job you have achieved. The running of the state’s events is a massive task and to have them run like a clock is the best complement any committee can be given. Well done to your ladies.

To my selection Co-ordinator, Di Cunnington and her zone selectors, congratulations to you all for carrying out your selection duties. It would be a hard task, but nevertheless when the hard calls are to be made with selecting sides (state) you have done so with great dignity, as it would not always please everyone, but we must remember these hard calls are for representation of our state and that is the job that is expected of our selectors. Keep up the good work ladies.

As Section President I am extremely proud of these ladies, as we must never forget what they give of themselves in carrying out these positions because they love the game of bowls. I salute all voluntary workers no matter what capacity they work within this great state of Queensland.

I have attended various events during the year and it was indeed a privilege and honour to wear my state ladies uniform.

The events attended are• 21st birthday of the Black Douglas at South Tweed and

the cutting of the cake with finalists Kelsey Cottrell and Karen Murphy. Thanks for your hospitality

• Golden Nugget-Tweed Heads• Ipswich United Services Bowling Club• Queensland Qualifying• Presidents at home at Downs DLBA Toowoomba• Condomine District at Tara• North Toowoomba City

The ladies were so pleased to see a Bowls Queensland representative in attendance, which has opened up many doors and that we know about them…great PR.

A great week at Bribie Island for the Champion of Club Champions events. What magnificent bowls were played it was a great to see the manner in which some of these games were finalised even though the games did not alter the results. Well done to all players and a well run event. At the conclusion, it was a pleasure to present badges together with Bowls Queensland Chair Ron Chambers, who made the prize money presentation. Thank you Bribie Island.

I travelled to Tweed Heads for State Pennant. I thank my Vice President Dawn for doing the honours as I was playing with my club West Toowoomba. A great experience. Congratulations to the winners.

I was grateful to the Board approving the section’s meetings with the delegates who came for the Council Meeting. The reason was for the Delegates to put a face to my name and to let my selection co-ordinator and match co-ordinator address the delegates. Both Di and Alison spoke of their positions and then we had question time. So I hope all the delegates took this information back to their districts. Hopefully this will be done all the time now.

The main thing that I have seen is that the country and others are pleased to see our section visiting their District. I know we can’t visit all Districts but to have our hat band in these area is good for bowling and Bowls Queensland.

My thanks to Bob Fraser (Men’s Section President) for your friendship. At various stages during the year the two sections have conducted combined meetings, which went well.

To the Board, under Chair Ron, it has been a pleasure to work with you and I feel we have had a good year.

To the staff at Bowls Queensland, you are indeed a great band of people and I thank you for your kindness and hospitality that you have always given to my section and myself.

To my committee, Vice President Dawn, Di (selection) Alison (match) Kay and Necia, it has been a pleasure and a privilege to work with you and may the ladies section continue to go ahead and promote this great game of ours, bowls, under the guidance of Bowls Queensland.

In closing it has been a great honour and privilege to have served as President of Bowls Queensland’s Ladies Section. Thanks to the Downs District Ladies Bowling Association and West Toowoomba for nominating me to this position.

Ladies’ Selection

Committee Co-ordinator, Di Cunnington

Year 2011 has brought further success for our Mighty Maroons. The selection committee takes great pride in the sides selected, in a fair and unbiased manner, from the various squads, to represent Queensland, which have brought distinction to our State, from the under 18’s, under 25’s, open squad and, for the first time, the over 60’s. We all share the accolades. Full results of all events in which Queensland ladies participated appear elsewhere in the Bowls Queensland Annual Report 2011. It is also very satisfying to have members from any of our squads selected to represent Australia and/or be selected in any national squad with the prospect of representing.

At this point, I sincerely thank my committee ladies, Joan, Betty, Gwenda and Pamela, your support is appreciated.

Compared to Year 2011, 2012 will be a much quieter year with respect to the number of events for selected State Sides however, training will be most important and each and every player is encouraged to carry out the extensive training regime compiled diligently by our State Coach, Bill Cornehls and, at this juncture, my personal thanks to Bill for the manner in which he has carried out the training days for the squads at Coorparoo Bowls Club during the year, to which I have made the effort to attend as well.

Once more, members of the selection committee were given the opportunity to attend all major events, giving them the opportunity to observe players in the positions in which they were selected.

Also, during the year, selectors, at their own volition, have attended numerous events, in and out of their respective zones, such as district events, Super Challenge, Premier League, Champion of Champions and Pennants. All results are spread around the entire committee.

As the 2018 Commonwealth Games have been awarded to the Gold Coast, the selection committee considers it is now most important to move forward and ensure our athletes be given every chance to participate in major events to have exposure where they can show their skills. We, as a selection committee, together with our supportive state coach will endeavour to have this occur.

Thanks to all of the clubs for your hospitality at any time members of this committee have been in attendance at events. Also, to those district personnel who have supplied us with comprehensive results, this is much appreciated.

Thank you, once more, to CEO Keith and your loyal staff members, for your help and guidance throughout the year.

To Board Chair, Ron Chambers, Directors, Section President Bev. Higgins and members of the ladies section, many thanks for your support. Also, to match committee for supplying my committee with results of all major events.

Once again, on behalf of the selection committee, I wish each and everyone good health and enjoyable times in year 2012, may we tread the path with resilience.

Finance Report

I have pleasure in once again presenting the Financial Report, this time for the year 2011.

There has been a marked improvement in the returns from investments. Some monies were returned and re-invested with Westpac. There has been a drop in the amount of bank charges due to the change from Bank of Queensland to Westpac. The Company is showing a reasonable surplus once again.

2011 was the year where floods ravaged the Toowoomba region which then literally flowed on down to Brisbane causing loss of life and hardships for many. Appeals for assistance were made and whilst many were able to give hands on help, others gave generously financially to those in need. Bowls Qld administered a flood appeal which saw Districts, Clubs and even individuals donating monies to assist their fellow bowlers. Bowls Queensland’s contribution to the appeal was $30,000. The end result was, $47,000 which was distributed to the Clubs deemed most affected by the disaster. Well done to all those who helped their fellow Queenslanders by direct action or when that was not possible, by their financial donation to the appeal.

My thanks to all staff members at Bowls Queensland with particular mention of Stu Taylor, who has kept me informed at all times of our position.

Best wishes to all board and committee members and volunteers and thanks for a job well done.

Director of Finance, Isobel Rhind
