Background Information
The Bible is not just one book, but an entire library, with stories, songs, poetry, letters and history, as well as religious literature. The Christian Bible has two main sections, the Old Testament and the New Testament. Western civilization has been shaped by the moral teachings, laws, culture, theology, and even the language of the Bible.

Christmas, December 25th, is a Christian holy day that marks the birth of Jesus Christ, the son of God. The history of Christmas dates back over 4,000 years. Many of our Christmas traditions were celebrated centuries before the Christ child was born. The 12 days of Christmas, the bright fires, the Christmas log, the giving of gifts, parades with floats, carolers (欢唱颂歌的人) who sing while going from house to house, the holiday feasts, and the church processions are the typical symbols of Christmas celebration.

Pan Gu
In the beginning the heavens and earth were still one, and all was chaos. The universe was like a big black egg, carrying Pan Gu inside itself. After 18 thousand years, Pan Gu awoke from a long sleep. He felt suffocated( 窒 息的 ), so he took up an ax and cracked open the egg. The light, clear part of it floated up and formed the heavens; the cold, thick matter stayed below to form the earth. Pan Gu stood in the middle, his head touching the sky, his feet planted on the earth. Pan Gu stood between them like a pillar, nine million li in height, so that they would never join again.

After God created the earth and the heaven, He created man from the
dust of the earth and breathed life into him. Then God made a garden in the
east, in Eden; and He put the man in the garden. God made every tree
come out of the earth, and in the middle of the garden God planted a
wonderful tree, called the tree of life. Whoever might eat the fruit from this
tree would live on forever.
God said, “It is not good for the man to be by himself. I will make one
like himself as a help to him.” God made the man fall into a deep sleep,
took one of his ribs, and made it into a woman. He took her to the man. The
man, Adam, and the woman, Eve, lived happily in the garden, for God had
given them good things to enjoy.
Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden
God wanted Adam and Eve to prove their love for Him, so He planted in
the garden a test-tree, the tree of knowledge. “You may eat the fruit of
every other tree,” God told them, “but you must not taste the fruit of this
tree. If you do, you shall surely die.”
One day a sad thing happened. A snake crept into the garden. It came
first to Eve. “Has God said that you must not eat the fruit of every tree in
this garden?” the snake asked.
“ We may eat the fruit of every tree except one,” Eve answered. “God
has told us that we must not eat the fruit from the tree of knowledge;
otherwise we will surely die.”
“That is not true. You will not surely die,” the snake replied. “God
knows that if you eat fruit from this tree, you will become wise and know
good and evil, just like Him. Therefore He has forbidden you to eat it.”
Until this time Eve had not touched the forbidden tree, but now she
looked at its fruit and thought that if it really would make her wise, like God,
she wanted to taste it. So she took and ate the fruit off the tree, and then
she gave some to Adam, and he too ate it.
At once their eyes were opened, and Adam and Eve understood they
were naked. So they tied leaves together to cover their bodies.
Soon they heard God’s voice in the garden, and they were afraid. They
hid themselves in the forest. But God called, “Adam, where are you?”
Adam answered, “I heard you, but I was afraid to come before you
because I was naked.”
“ Who told you that you were naked?” God asked, “Have you eaten the
forbidden fruit?” Then Adam told God that Eve had given him some of the
fruit and he had eaten it.
“ What is this you have done?” God questioned Eve. She told Him the
whole story.
God looked at all three and said, “Because you did not obey me, you
must be punished. You, snake, must crawl forever, hated and feared by
mankind. Eve, because of you, all your daughters will suffer pain in
childbirth. And because of you, Adam, all your sons will have to work very
hard to make a living from the earth. You human beings are dust, and you
shall return to dust in the end.”
God drove them out of the Garden of Eden and placed an angel at the
gate of the garden to prevent them from coming back to eat the fruit of the
tree of life.

Sentence Translation:
No matter who might taste the fruit from the tree, he would enjoy a life that never ends.
Sentence Paraphrase:
在这里 whoever 引导的是主语从句,相当于 no matter who 。带 ever 的wh-疑问词在引导条件状语从句时可与 no matter + wh-疑问词互换,例如:

但请注意下一句In need of money, Bob had to take whatever job that was offered to him.
在这句中只能用whatever, 而不能用 no matter what,因为在这里whatever 做的是定语而不是引导条件状语从句。

The chief god, Zeus, was annoyed by the trick Prometheus, the creator of Man, played on him. In order to punish Man, Zeus took fire away. However, Prometheus flew to the Isle of Lemnos to bring back fire to mankind again. This time, to punish Prometheus and Man, Zeus asked his son Hephaestus to create a woman, Pandora, and sent her as a gift to Epimetheus, Prometheus’ brother. Out of curiosity, Pandora opened the box given to her by Zeus as a wedding gift. Immediately there came out all terrible things except the spirit of hope.

Successful language learners are independent learners. They do not depend on the book or the teacher to explain; they discover their own way to learn the language. Instead of waiting for the teacher to explain, they try to find the patterns and rules for themselves. They are good guessers who look for clues and form their own conclusions. When they guess wrong, they guess again. They try to learn from their own mistakes.

It is about Thanksgiving Day, which falls on the fourth Thursday of November, a different date every year. Almost every culture in the world has held celebrations of thanks for plentiful harvests. The American Thanksgiving holiday began as a feast of thanksgiving in the early days of the American colonies almost four hundred years ago. Turkeys, corn, pumpkins and cranberry sauce are symbols which represent Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is a time for reunion and sharing. Even if they live far away, family members gather for a reunion at the house of an older relative. All give thanks together for the good things that they have.

As shown by the pictures, one person’s hard work is not only for his own benefit, but also for the benefit of future generations. It reminds us that the existence of our valuable national heritage is due to the struggle of our predecessors. We, in turn, should also work hard in order to guarantee the comfort and safety of generations to come.
Sustainable development has become a topic of heated discussion in recent years. While it is justifiable to satisfy current demands, we cannot neglect the needs of our descendants. Our children also depend on Earth’s natural resources and we should not deprive them of such necessities. While making great efforts to increase our current quality of life, we must simultaneously consider how our actions will affect future lives.
