Pregnant teens find solace, support at Rose of SharonBy Chris [email protected]

mber Smith has come a long way.

The Bradford resident arrived at the doorstep of Rose of Sha-ron at 15.

She was six months pregnant, confused and scared.

Once inside, staff helped the teenaged mom-to-be earn high school credits and begin to chart a path forward.

Now, due, in part, to the services and sup-port provided by Rose staff, she’s become

Aa successful entrepreneur by opening the Drive True Mechanical auto shop. She’s a mother of three and has a husband, Tom. Amber is also the president of a local busi-ness networking group for women.

But she never forgets the folks who kept her motivated during an extremely difficult time.

“I attended Rose 15 years ago; that was half a lifetime ago,” Smith said, speaking to a crowd of about 40 people during a street sign unveiling outside the Eagle Street facil-ity in Newmarket Monday afternoon.

“Once I finally admitted (I was pregnant),

I left traditional high school and enrolled at Rose. During my pre-natal days, I spent my time here getting high school credits, taking birthing workshops and working with my counsellor in setting goals for dealing with realities I now had to face.

“Through the Rose, a wide variety of services were available to me — services I didn’t even know existed. I was able to gain confidence as a parent, which is the big-gest struggle we young mothers face. I got opportunities from the Rose that shaped the person I am today. I still consider myself a young mother; it never leaves me.”

She worked against statistics — which told her she was unlikely to finish high school, rise above the poverty line and raise a child that would attend college.

“When I became a teen parent, I felt I was destined to fall into these statistics,” Smith said.

“We can rise above the statistics. I would never have a normal family. But because of this phenomenal service, I didn’t feel hopeless anymore. I’m proud to say I’m happy; I have the family I’ve always dreamed of.”

The event was part of Rose’s rebranding exercise, which includes a new website, logo and exterior signage.

It was a warm afternoon and once the sun came out, its glare on the microphone and sound system forced many to squint as they watched Smith. She stood near the entrance to the Rose and the front door was held open by a wooden toy truck.

Inside, the facility is clean but welcoming and staff offered tours to guests.

There are pictures of kids whose mothers have been helped by Rose hanging above the secretary’s desk and a cradle is in the corner

of the main foyer. The hallway and most of the public areas

are painted green and the walls of staff offices are purple. There’s a room used for schooling, a kitchen and lounge area and a childcare space and paintings and felt murals on the walls.

Rose assists more than 300 York Region mothers each year. The facility offers indi-vidual counselling, group programs that strengthen parenting and life skills, high

school education assistance and child minding services. Food, diapers and baby cloth-ing is also supplied to the young mothers, if necessary.

It has provided support for more than 30 years.

“We embarked on a jour-ney to create a logo that truly

reflects the work we do,” Rose executive director Anna Pavan said.

“We’re the only agency in the region that provides these types of services, but we still had a lot of confusion about what we do. We took a look at that.

“We looked at the rebranding as a refresh-er. People didn’t realize the old logo was an R and an S, shaped like a heart. We knew then that the logo had to reflect who we’re sup-porting.

“(The new logo) has on it a mother and child. It’s pretty clear who we work with. Whether a young (mother) is in crisis in Georgina or Markham, this is a place for them to come.”

A little wind and rain couldn’t stop the Bradford Lions Club from making a differ-ence in the community on May 1.

The group held a 5-km Walk for MOBYSS, beginning outside of the BWG library in support of the Mobile York South Simcoe Youth Walk-in Clinic, frequently located within the library parking lot.

The event raised some much-needed

funds, as well as awareness, regarding support of the program, which tends to youth between the ages of 13 and 25. The MOBYSS bus allows confidential access to health services when necessary to teenag-ers and young adults in a comfortable and trusted environment.

More than 35 participants gathered Sunday, including council members and local business owners. Event organizer and Lions Club member Roddie Saunders thanked everyone for eagerly participating

to support such an important cause.“I would like to thank all the volunteers

who came out to help set up and make this event a success. We also want to thank all the walkers for coming out and taking the time to raise money and awareness for MOBYSS,” he said.

“This wouldn’t be possible without all of you and all the generous donations made by friends, family and strangers alike.”

He also directed a big thank you to the Canadian Mental Health Association,

which allowed MOBYSS to be the recipient of all funds raised. Vida Massage was also on-site an hour before the walk, providing mini massages to walkers for a $2 dona-tion.

Nancy’s Nifty Nook and 3 Scoops Ice Cream donated raffle prizes to help fund-raising efforts before and during the walk.

The Lions Club raised $2,755, though Saunders says more donations are still expected to trickle in over the next few days.

Weather Network big fail

I rely on the Weather Network to see when bad weather is heading toward my community.

As a commuter and homeowner, it is important to me to prepare for my com-mute each morning. This is no longer pos-sible as our local forecast now shows only a small part of Ontario, with Kitchener as the focal point.

Newmarket is at the top, almost off the radar map. It has been my experience that much of the bad weather comes from the north.

How is one to prepare? Good luck if you have a cottage or are heading north, because the Weather Network doesn’t think you need to know if you are driving into bad weather.

I guess it does not understand the valu-

Ban door-to-door salesoes the bell toll for door-to-door sales?

A private member’s bill put forward this week

by Etobicoke Centre MPP Yvan Baker to prohibit door sales of furnaces, air conditioners, water heaters and water treatment devices is just the latest call to end a practice that has drawn the ire of consumers for years.

Horror stories abound of trusting homeowners, a num-ber of them senior citizens or vulnerable persons, who have signed contracts at the door with unscrupulous salespeople, only to find products or services pur-chased were either unnecessary or more expensive than had been suggested. Sometimes both.

Last year, NDP MPP Sarah Campbell tabled a private mem-ber’s bill of her own aimed at curbing the practice of selling electricity contracts at the door.

Closer to home, Aurora coun-cil has looked into ways of regu-lating door-to-door sales and a pair of Vaughan residents have launched a campaign dubbed StopTheKnocks after dealing with a solicitor who claimed to be from Enbridge who appeared

on their doorstep within days of moving.

Just last week, the Town of Newmarket had to issue a warn-ing to residents about aggressive water heater, energy and gas distribution door-to-door sales-persons, some of whom were claiming to be with the munici-pality. Markham Councillor Colin Campbell called on the province to completely ban door-to-door sales in the home services sector.

Enough is enough.Regardless of what happens

with these latest pushes to regulate or curb door-to-door sales, the fact remains it’s time for change. Anyone with access to the Internet has the ability to locate and learn about any conceivable service they could ever want or need, which makes pushy door-to-door salesper-sons and high-pressure, and possibly deceptive, tactics to sign a contract on the spot both uncalled for and unconscio-nable.

Certainly, there are some hon-est door-to-door salespersons working in the home services sector, but the numerous bad apples have long since spoiled the bunch.

Dable service it provides. Ontarians are trav-ellers; we need the old provincewide radar back. Despite much feedback from my neighbours, there has been no response to this issue.

The new mantra: Everyone stay home. Don’t travel unless you are travelling to Kitchener, which, apparently, is the new centre of the universe.

Regarding article en-titled Mixed reviews during assisted-death bill discussion: bit.ly/1NiFbvM

Ashley Constable … This may cause some debate, but I am for it. If someone has an incurable disease or illness and in constant pain or suffering, they should have the option. There are some who are bound to a hospital bed for the rest of their lives and would love the option. Why make someone suffer if there is no cure or anything that could be done. I think it would be more heart-breaking watching someone suffer like that then to al-low them to get assisted suicide to end their pain and suffering

Marsh Mash participants can breathe a sign of relief after the Ontario Marathon Canoe Kayak Racing Association announced its involvement to ensure the popular event is not cancelled.

Following a death in the family of long-time organizer Ian Craig, races involving rec-reational and amateur participants were can-celled last week. Qualifiers for the ICF Canoe

World Marathon were not affected.Thankfully, the association has stepped

up to assist in organizing a modified event on May 14 that will take a different form due to the tight timelines. Details regarding races for recreational and amateur classes will be provided as they are available.

For inquiries, email Hailey Roberts with the BWG leisure services department at [email protected] or call 905-775-2162, ext. 5012.

ith spring (finally) in the air, I want to share with you some of our exciting plans for parks, recreation and leisure services.

Shortly, we will be undertaking a lei-sure services master plan that will look out into the next 10 years to create a vision for what we want to achieve across a wide range of community needs and a plan to go about making that vision real-ity, with public meetings to hear directly from residents.

There is a lot in the works already, too. Another splash pad will open this spring, this time at Dreamfields. As well, Hen-derson Park is entering phase one of con-struction. The gift of 97 acres of woods and farmland on the Tenth Sideroad is a fantastic contribution to our town’s parks. Plans call for forested trails, more soccer fields, an amphitheatre and indoor washroom facilities.

When I ran for mayor nearly two years ago, I said, “I want to help build an active and healthy town where we can enjoy our beautiful natural heritage.”

I also identified two areas that I hope to see progress on in the coming months.

First, Bridge Street is the gateway not only to Bradford, but to Lake Simcoe from the Holland River. The town needs to spur investment in this area to beau-tify the entrance to town, create trails and promote economic growth centred around docks, marina, restaurants and other tourist attractions.

I haven’t forgotten about this goal from the campaign—right up there with keeping taxes low, it was one of the most popular suggestions I made in my policy platform.

To that end, we have had conversa-tions with the provincial government

W

about potential funding avenues through the Cycle Ontario strategy and I remain optimistic that this is an area we can improve with help from other levels of government Rest assured it is certainly an area where I see great potential to make a meaningful difference in our town’s appearance.

Second, the “old arena” at the com-munity centre sits unused too much of the year. The community centre also includes Centennial Park, a big campus of soccer fields, a ball diamond, the curl-ing rink and a run-down skateboard park. Revitalizing and improving Centen-nial Park must be a priority as it can be the heart of the old downtown, providing recreation services to an under-served area of town. I have always said that we need to ensure quality services in all areas of town, so as part of our leisure service master plan, I hope we can hear your ideas about how we improve the “old arena” and surrounding grounds.

In addition to all the good work cur-rently underway, these are two areas I hope to focus on as we embark on the next phase of building a beautiful town with great services for our residents — with your help and input.

NEW LOCATION THIS YEAR!

By Brea [email protected]

Bradford’s musical youth are invited to take part in a friendly, meet-and-mingle music competition, Gradually Get Louder, on June 12 at the Portuguese Cultural Cen-tre.

Registered contestants will have the chance to share their talent on stage in front of not just their friends, family and peers, but also a panel of judges that was hand picked by event sponsor Magic Cut Media & Promotion.

“This is an event to bring our local musical community together,” explained MCM owner James Martin.

“We want everyone to get exposure. It’ll be a fun day of music with each other and a chance to share talent.”

For the contest portion of the event, art-ists will be judged based on two categories — vocals and overall musical performance. Canadian singer-songwriters Bella Gold-win and Michala Todd have been invited to judge the competition, with a third judge expected to join the duo within the next couple of weeks.

First place for both categories will receive $500 toward services through MCM, an amount that can cover the pro-duction of a music video, promotional video or commercial.

Second place winners will receive a $300 coupon, while third place will take

home a $200 coupon.Throughout the contest, tables will also

be available for use within the building if artists wish to set up a display to promote

their music. According to Martin, the day will have a bit of a trade show feel to it, encouraging participants to promote their music alongside their performances on stage.

Applications to for the contest are due by May 15 and cost $25 per act. Tickets are now available for the general public and can be purchased for $15 per adult in advance or $20 at the door and $5 per child in advance or $10 at the door.

A firm schedule of the day’s perfor-

mances will be available on the MCM website two to three weeks before the actual event.

For as long as he can remember, Lawrence Hellings has worked with paint in some way, shape or form.

So, it only seems fitting that he and his wife, Gail, are the professional, friendly faces behind Brad-ford West Gwillimbury’s Decorator’s Edge on Holland Street West.

“My dad was a painter and eventually I landed a job at a local paint store,” said Hellings.

“In 1984, I began working with Benjamin Moore and I’ve stuck to that brand the entire time.”

Hellings and his wife, along with daughter Jade and longtime employee Carolyn Bunn, will celebrate a big business milestone of 25 years serving the community on May 7.

A public open house will be held during regular business hours, with a special visit from council mem-bers at 11 a.m.

The store, which opened in 1991, has only been situated at two locations – the first at 107 Holland St. E., until moving into its current location in 1999 at 284 Holland St. W.

“It’s been a great experience working in this com-munity,” said Hellings, as daughter Jade nodded her head beside him with a smile.

“I’m now seeing the next generation of families come into the store. People who were once kids com-ing in with their parents are now parents themselves. We are very excited to be celebrating 25 years in Brad-ford.”

The open house will feature cake, refreshments, a ribbon cutting and raffle prizes. Lawrence Hellings and daughter Jade celebrate the 25th anniversary of Decorator’s Edge May 7.

MISSING BIRDMy beautiful cockatiel Chico flew away from home on the morning ofApril 21st, 2016. She was startled with the landscaping which I wasdoing at my house and in her panic she flew out of the house. Needlessto say I was devastated! I have cried myself to sleep for almost a week.

Chico is incredibly friendly and socialized; she will fly to anyone andwill capture your heart. She is also a bit spirited and loves playingwith shiny objects, like earrings, necklace, coins etc. She also loveskeyboards and computers as she was at my office all the time and sheloved playing on the keys and sitting on the computer screen. I will doeverything I can to get her back safely.

Please let me know if you can do anything to help. My heart is brokenand I will do anything to get her back. I am also offering a $500 rewardfor her return. If a family has found her and fallen in love with her I'mhoping they will find it in their hearts to give her back to me and that'swhy I'm offering the reward.

Sincerely Yours,Houri Torossian # 416 919 1910

Upcoming construction, involving a por-tion of Hwy. 400 from Hwy. 9 to north of the Holland Marsh in Bradford, has been a cause of great concern to local farmers in Bradford West Gwillimbury and King Township.

The roadway will undergo a widening and replacement of the bridge running over the Canal River beginning in 2018. The proj-ect will be overseen by the province and is expected to last nearly three years.

As part of the construction timeline, explained by Mike Trader of Stantec during a March 15 council meeting, the province is requiring that the exit ramps at Canal Road be closed for the duration of the reconstruc-tion and replacement.

A portion of roadway between Wist and Davis roads will also remain closed for a large duration of that timeline, causing serious problems for farm owners within the Holland Marsh.

One of those farmers, David Teichroeb, told council on May 3 about the importance of immediate access to Hwy. 400 from Canal Road.

“My family and I bought the Canal Road Farmers Market six years ago and I’ve got to say, I really love running the business,” he said.

“I know that it’s been there for nearly 26 years. I’ve grown up on a farm and it’s hard work. We have worked hard to make the

market work for us and now we hear it will be taken away when the ramps are gone.”

Teichroeb worries visitors and deliveries to the market will decline. The closure of the north and southbound ramps will also take away direct access for farm and delivery trucks to land within the marsh.

‘We have worked hard to make the

market work for us and now we

hear it will be taken away when

the ramps are gone.’

Alternate routes would greatly increase travel times as well as local traffic within King and BWG.

After a brief discussion, council chose to support a notice of motion to be sent to Transportation Minister Steven Del Duca, outlining why the Canal Road ramps should not be closed down during construction.

“We need to use our connections to get a meeting with Del Duca and (Premier Kath-leen) Wynne,” Councillor Peter Dykie said.

“We have to do everything in our power to get down to Queen’s Park.”

The town will also receive support from King Township, in hopes that a face-to-face meeting can be held with Del Duca in the near future.

Ramp closure plan upsets farmers Bradford man charged with careless driving after man struck March 6

A 33-year-old Bradford man has been charged with careless driving and fail to properly wear a seatbelt following a serious accident last month.

On March 6 at around 2:45 p.m., a pickup truck, struck a pedestrian walking across the intersection of Holland Street West and Melbourne Drive in Bradford. The pedes-trian was able to grab on to the underside of the vehicle, but was dragged nearly 500 metres before witnesses could get the driver to stop.

The victim was sent to hospital with seri-

ous but non-life threatening injuries after he was extricated from underneath the vehicle by Bradford fire crews and Simcoe County paramedics. A collision reconstruction was completed by the South Simcoe Police traffic and marine unit.

On April 28, police charged the Bradford man. He will appear in court in June.

ason Churchill was a man well ahead of his time.

Several years ago, Jason – a firefighter with the city of Markham for close to three decades – started tinkering with drones.

The drones weren’t very sophis-ticated, even for the time.

His hope was to dispatch drones ahead of fire trucks to assess the fire.

“He was trying to get this drone to work,” said fellow Markham firefighter Michael Stevens, who started around the same as Jason.

“He was always looking to what’s coming. And this was four or five years before drones were even on the table.”

Jason had a reputation for thinking ten steps ahead, how to make firefighters safer so they can do their job protecting the public.

When he looked into some-

thing or tried something new, no one thought he was nuts. Instead, those around him thought he was on to something, Stevens added.

“When he tried it out, we knew it was because he thought about it,” he said. “It was only a matter of

time before we would hear people say, ‘Ok, now we have drone problems.’”

Jason died last June from cancer at the age of 50. His death was clas-sified as a line of duty death.

It was that forward thinking attitude that led him to push for firefighter safety with equipment as well as with benefits.

Safety for firefighters was a top

priority for Jason, even when there was plenty of pushback at the beginning, said long-time friend Ron Larson.

“He ended up saving a lot of lives,” Larson said. “And not just the public but other firefighters, too.”

Jason also played an important role in the Markham Professional Fire Fighters Association.

“If there was something wrong, he did what he could to make it right,” said Markham fire platoon chief Scott Daniel.

“He was always fighting for the little guy. People don’t realize, all of the things we have Jason pushed for them.”

The acquiring of equipment such as fire truck lights, foam trucks to fight chemical fires, fire retardant bunker gear, airplane crash and rescue training and post-fire rehabilitation and decon-tamination can be traced back to Jason’s efforts.

“His thinking was, ‘If we needed it, we’re gonna get it,’” Stevens said.

“It was all for us.”To commemorate Jason, a

statue was commissioned not only as a tribute to him but also as a memorial for all firefighters who died in the line of duty.

Vancouver artist Dean Lauzé carved Jason’s profile into clay using old photos.

The 7-ft. tall statue, titled Undaunted, will be cast in bronze and placed on top of a black granite block, putting his head and helmet some 9-feet in the air, Larson said.

“It will just feel heroic,” he added. The black granite base is

inscribed in gold leaf the words, “Brothers who stand together can-not fall alone”.

“He as 100 per cent about the brotherhood,” Stevens said.

An unveiling ceremony for the Jason Churchill memorial statue will take place June 29 at 4 p.m. at the Mount Pleasant Cem-etery. To RSVP for the unveiling, email [email protected]
