Here We Go Again ...A busy time for all,as players sweat to attain fitness, coaches devisedevious plans and effective player formations, andAdministrators bite their finger nails waiting to see howthe DCC will support Football South’s ‘Home of Football’plan, and the laying of artificial Turf playing surfaces.

Chris and the FSouth staff have also been settingup this season’s Fixtures which are available on theadmin website.

The new ODT sponsored Southern League has to be an improvementmoving up from the ‘seven team and a bye’ league of last year, increased nowto nine teams since Queenstown has returned along with a welcome Southlandpresence. Pity that Timaru did not enter - but that’s probably work in progress.

Some Extra away trips will really please club treasurers, and preparethose with ambition for the return of a South Island League - which will providea stepping stone to the standards required for National League.

Had to be disappointing, our Southern United finising bottom, despitelots of work and effort at all levels. But its that old cliche that nowadays youhave to run hard just to stand still - in the ratings.

Most other Nat. Lg. clubs had budgets that dwarved Southerns, and forPaul O’Reilly.... its back to the drawing board. Scouring the Southern Leagueand beyond, to strengthen Southern.

One brilliant aspect of this year’s competition was Mosgiel’s maddieswho formed ‘ Paul O’Reilly’s Blue’n Gold Army.’Skip on, a page or twoand you’ll find theundiluted origin of the‘Army, ‘ warts and all -plus how the much lovedVuvezelas were acquiredand the long hours spentlearning how to producethe melifluos cacophanythat we all loved,

Well done thePlainsmen, top marks forInitiative andEntertainment, cheers

Football South, Level One, Coaching Course

FSth Chief coach Paul O’Reilly brought some old mates along to helpout, and after some fun ice-breaking games, the participants were fed sometheory, then did practical sessions in the afternoon - on a day that was initiallydamp, but improved with sun that had heart rates rise.

We definitely need more qualified coaches - OK looking after youngteams aint Rocket Science.... But everyone who does a coaching course, comes away with a better grasp of targets to aim for, and how to organise atraining session that keeps eveyone active, learning and enjoying themselves.

Last years AGM

Chris

Last year, Football South held its AGM for the 2015 calendar year. We had agood turn-out which, being my first, I am told is the highest attendance ofrecent years. Between Chairman Matthew Holdridge and myself we provideda summary from the previous year, an update on the financial results, andcovered a variety of highlights from 2015 from throughout the Federation.

Matthew and fellow board member David Smillie were voted back in asboard members for another 3 year term through great support from theattending members. We also thanked players, parents, clubs, referees, coaches, our patron Blair Davidson and all other volunteers for your continuedcontribution to Football and Football South. Myself and the board also thankedFootball South staff for their continued hard work and passion.

Finally, I provided an update to the attendees on the strategic plan, our relationship with the Polytechnic, the proposed turf facility at Logan Park, and Southern United. These updates will be released via our website andsocial media over the coming days, so if you missed out on the AGM – keepan eye out for these.

Thanks to everyone who came to the AGM, it was great to speak withyou all during or after the event. Kind Regards,

We’ll be there...

‘ Otaaago ! ‘

The SuperCup squad has intensified training as the departure date forinternational flights gets closer, and there is a ‘ buzz’ generated, that coachesNeil Mackenzie, Andy Duncan and Matt Scoles are harnessing to aim foroptimum fitness - which will be needed against top opposition.

Just as important as fitness, will be the ‘football understanding’ neededon the park, playing against hard-nosed Irish County sides, and thesophisticated continental teams that apply pressure in subtler ways. In a fewweeks the draw will be made by Irish organisers, and the lads will have realopposition club names to look forward to....

July 23rd - July 28th, 2017

Now the Premier League has decided topublicly pay tribute to the invaluable rolethe tournament plays in developing youngplayers by offering a three-year financialsupport agreement. Before they were famous, DavidBeckham, Sergio Busquets, Paul Scholesand Northern Ireland heroes such asMichael McGovern, Gareth McAuley,David Healy and Aaron Hughes all cuttheir teeth in the Province's hugelysuccessful competition for aspiringteenage footballers.Current England internationals MarcusRashford, Jesse Lingard, and RyanBertrand all paraded their skills in venuessuch as Coleraine, Limavady andBallymena.

A LookBack...

State of theArt timekeeping

Roslyn coach Colin Thomfaces another teamrebuild, as several youngplayers head over thehorizon, but he has beenthere before, andwelcomes the challenge.

Blessed with twoquality young keepers inTom Stevens and NicoCockerell, there is still anexperience core with MikeSannum’s skills, and thecombative qualities andskills of Tom Connor, &energy of Reid Huilleman, plus the young veteranstrikers TennesseeKinghorn and NathanWilkie to add pace and cutting edge.

New faces are mostly unshaven, Tim O’Farrell and Dom Madden lookgood prospects, as does Shae Thom, and the trio went well in Pre-season,among the resident Roslyn regulars.

Against a good Mosgiel side, Roslyn knocked the ball around well, andlets hope that spectacular goal by young Wilkie is the forerunner of many moreto come.

Last year Roslyn finished in fourth place, with a plus 5 Goal Diff. CoachThom will be keen to boost thegoals and padlock his goalmouththis season in a nine teamSouthern League that will featurea couple of demanding ‘away’ tripsto Invers and Queenstown. Firstmatch is away to Caversham atTonga park onSaturday

Jamie Whitmarsh has been the Queenstown coach fora few years now, and looks forward to the comingseason and a re-entry into Southern League - so whatbrought the big Englishman to Enzed ?

Said Whitmarsh, ‘ My career started in IT, ofall things. IT related to banking in London. I did that forabout twenty years, then got bored of it about tenyears ago… I was doing the job with my eyes closed.

So I started teaching PE (Physical Education)in schools and getting my football coaching badges. Iloved working in schools, but then I spotted a jobopportunity coaching the New York Red Bulls.

I was one of 75 people invited to try out on aday of horrendous weather. It was a really awful day;

the pitch was soaking. We each had a turn to do our thing. I was a motor mouth and they pulled me

off after about ten minutes and asked me where I’d got my training schedule from – Isaid I’d Googled it.

I got through to the second try out, where there was about 30 of us. We had toput together a theoretic board and I chose Thierry Henry. Why? Because he’s like aRolls Royce.

I got the job and coached the New York Red Bullsfor a year, then returned to the UK to finish my badges.

I came to New Zealand on holiday (a friend lives inQueenstown) and ended up being asked to do a couple ofcoaching sessions with the Falcons. I went for a few drinkswith the Queenstown Rovers Club President and, after a fewbeers, at three in the morning, I agreed to coach the team.

Craig Whitson has taken over from Andrew Brook at theMosgiel helm this season, and while this is his first‘senior’ appointment, the affable afficionado has been atMosgiel almost all his adult life. Yep, a true Blue...

He said,’ Overall I am pretty happy with Mosgiel'spreseason. The players have worked on their fitness andthe style we want to play is coming together.

‘A win and a draw against Northern and Roslyn inour local preseason game's has provided confidence tothe players that we will be competitive. Of course westill have areas to work on which will be a focus this week before our firstcompetitive game.’

Among the goals scored were several well constructed sequences, thathad Isaac Snell, Andreas Hirzcy, Jess Wright and Rory Findlay hitting the net, while Connor Neil and Reg Coldicott are sure to boost scores.

The ‘Peter Pan’ of Dunedin football, Phil Kelly looked as sharp as everin Pre-Season, an invaluable weapon to introduce from the bench. Battling

back to full fitness after a double kneeoperation ( ouch ) is Cody Brook - itchingto get back in harness.

Mosgiel finished in third place lastyear on 37 points, three behind secondplaced Technical, and an eye wateringdistance of 17 points behind championCaversham.

It's looking to be an exciting season this year forVarsity. We're going into the season with 5 men's teams, 3women's teams and it's looking like there will even be a fourthwomen's team that is going to be a joint Northern/Uni mix!

Our Div 4 Men did so well in their season last year thatthey've been promoted up to Div 3, giving us 2 men's teams

fighting for top spot in thisdivision.

Our Men's prems, stillunder the seasoned eye ofDarren Hart, are lookinghopeful with a bit more experience under mostof the player's belts and a few strong newadditions to round it all off.

Women wise, our prems are very happy towelcome aboard our new head coach, JamesCoombes, who will have as assistant thetalented Tess Nicols.

The team is quite new this year, however, thanks to a strong influx of talented girls andour quality coaches it is shaping up to be anexciting season. We're all very excited to seehow everything plays out ! Meg

With a large portion of Southerns games being playedout at Peter Johnstone Park this season we thought itwould be a good idea to open the clubrooms beforehand , have a quiet bevvy and wander over to watch aquality match.

Like all good things it took time to get off theground and despite weekly debates over a brown bottlewe didn't get it sorted and in the early games thegeneral crowd werent really getting behind the boys andthe atmosphere at the grounds was a bit flat. The ladswere really playing well and with a bit of luck and the rubof the green they'd have picked up a few more points and we knew that with ashow of noisy support the lads would respond.

It took a rather disparaging comment or 2 about the wisdom of playingon a rugby pitch in mosgiel plus the obligatory " why the imports" before wedecided to implement Choppers plan of meeting beforehand and having one ortwo beforehand

We understood the effort Football South took to secure a ground in thesummer that would meet NZFootballs standards and saw thebenefit of the Irish lads experienceto rub off on the best of our localtalent and wanted to make surethey knew they were appreciatedafter their first few games wereclose but without reward.

It was a bit of a team effort - withPikey making sure we were kittedup, Social media bunny TK ralliedthe troops to turn up, Chopsupplied the flags and I drummedup the monotone sound. ( More )

or, how I learned the Vuvuzela... by Nev Watson

We even managed to track down an artist for Paul O'Reillys banner. With safety - orstupidity in numbers and tucked away in a tin shed we found our voice and had fun incoming up with unique chants - we'd almost try and out do ourselves with the chants -some were hilarious, some slighty risqué and more than a few were binned.

Meeting at the clubrooms before hand and wandering over Memorial en masseto PJ Park we were hoping to let the lads know that as they were warming up we hadtheir backs.

Wanting to make as much noise as possible - we scoured the $2 shopsDunedin wide for the vuvuzelas, and had to go back for replacements a few times. Onone occasion we went round 10 shops before paying over the odds for plastic horns .They certainly made for plenty of(unharmonious) noise along with a couple of timberplanks in the isolatedtin shed for thedrumming.

For some ofus it was a throw backto our OE in Englandand being on theterraces - for some ofthe younger onesthey realised howclose they'd nearlycome to being in Millwalls Bush Whackers.

There was couple of Fairweather ones amongst us - think chelsea and cityfans ( you get the picture) who turned up occasionally but most of us turned up for eachgame and whilst We weren't quite in the league of the Barra bravas we did certainlyappreciate the one off bar tab - thanks footie south .

With travelling into Forsyth Barr we had to skip past the rigorous securitychecks - fortunately a nod and wink in the right direction at the right time allowed uspast and into the inner sanctum - incredulous to think a couple of nasty cheapvuvuzela might not have got past security.

Once started we were never going to miss the trip to invercargill which wasamazingly easy to arrange and fun to organise - we nearly had to arrange 2 mini vans. -who'd have thought last year of travelling 400 kms to watch footie - just like theProclaimers we coulda done 400 more.

With big plans for an upswing in membership next year we certainly will bethere again to support Paul and show him his army is behind him and would like tothank him and Terry for their top effort in getting things RIGHTED on the ship andstarting to turn it around

REMEMBER good things take time, unless your a Liverpool supporter (thenthey never will - hilliarious.) So make sure next year- even if you haven't got thestomach to wear the plainsmen kit - get your crew organised and get behind Southernand support OUR team and let's show thoseCanterbury types that football does have ahome in the deep south.

Under new coachMalcolm Fleming,Caversham aims tocontinue the successachieved by formercoach Tim Horner - animmaculate record of -18 games played, nodefeats, no draws, and an average goal tally of over 3.5 per game, a total of 64 in 18games, and a miserly 6 goals conceded - thats about a third of a goal per game.... WellDone.

Malcolm will bring his own brand of coaching to Caversham. He is employed extensively by Kings HighSchool, and runs his own Dunedin FootballAcademy.

Also involved with the English WestHam club system, Fleming has worked inAustralia for the Hammers, and recentlyreturned from a coaching tour of the UK witha group of 42 young players selected fromAustralia, and New Zealand.

Coaching sessions were held withDunfermline FC, Dundee Utd, Rangers FC,West Ham, Wolverhampton FC and withHugh McCauley ( who coached Liverpool FCAcademy for a great number of years), pluswe attended the Gordon Strachan Academy.

It was also interesting to meet somevery high profile coaches and members ofclubs that have been very successful overthe years.

People like Gordon Strachanhimself, Sandy Clark, Craig Levein, DonaldPark, Allan Johnson, Dave Boardman, alsoRay Stewart, who played plenty of topfootball in England and Scotland.Roll on Saturday.

Cheers

We unfortunately had to say goodbye to 8 premplayers at the end of the season due to work andplayers graduating.

I have to be honest I was a little worried by this, however after a very productive pre-season this haschanged to excitement and optimism. I believe thesquad we have going into the season is stronger thanlast.

We were lucky enough to recruit 3 lads fromWellington in Ben Kaveney-Gibb, Tom Simpson and

Caleb Redstall and Henry Smithfrom Southland. All 4 of the ladshave added quality to the squadand have fitted right in.

The most pleasing thing forme however is the development ofthe high school lads from lastseason. Yugen Miyahara, Seanvan Dyke, George Gray and HarryFraser have really progressed inthe last 12 months and will bepushing for a starting spot.

To add to the young ones,we welcome one of the brightestprospects in the region EnWatanabe who has impressedduring pre-season.

After 2 wins over Tech andUniversity and a narrow defeat toMosgiel in pre-season I amlooking forward to the weekendand getting underway. We will belooking to continue to improvefrom last year. Best of luck toeveryone for the season.Cheers , Lewis

Fluro yellow shirts rather than black in the top federationdivisions this season.

New Referee Development Manager Jeff Clampexplains “we are trialling the use of the new Fluro Yellowreferee shirts from the national leagues this season.

Clashes with playing strips is always an issue andhopefully using the Fluro yellow will minimise that”.

Referees began their pre-season preparation with aworkshop in Dunedin on 4 th March, which involved both

classroom and practical game video sessions, led by ex-FIFA assistant referee WayneStapley from Christchurch.

Regular regional referee group meetings and training have also commencedthis month. Referee numbers are similar to last season, with some losses and gains. Acouple of referees have retired and some have moved away for jobs.

We have gained Dan Woulahan from overseas and Jack Henderson fromMainland, and a few have returned to Dunedin to continue studying including Will Whiteand Sam Kirk-Reeve.

There are also a few ‘walking wounded’ Craig Campbell and Craig Smith inInvercargill and Francois Cuccurullo in Dunedin, who we hope to have available as soonas injuries heal.

Along with recruiting new young referees, Football South would like to hearfrom any ex-players interested in continuing to be involved by refereeing.

To encourage females, they also have a goal of having an all-female team ofofficials for the national women’s league in the coming seasons.

A reminder to check out the Laws of the Game changes for 2016/17,NZF Code of Conduct and Referee Respect program, all availablefrom the Football South websiteor contact Jeff, [email protected]. or 021 242 4067.

I am pleased with the focus the players have shown in pre-season and we have a little more experience in the squad thanlast year.

Matt Mitchell is the Captain for 2017 supported by localboy Blake Porteous.

Most of last years team returns to the Fray and some ofthe younger players take their experience to the Fletcher Cup.

We are excited by our new members passion to play and by theircommitment in training which has increased intensity since we started back inJanuary. Kevin Scouller is assistant coach with John Lang as Manager.

We are looking forward to our new clubrooms being available soon tohost teams and supporters a like and hope that officials will also feel welcome.I wish all of the other coaches and teams an enjoyable season !Richard Kerr-Bell

Technical senior coach Tony Martinreports, ‘ again we have lost a fewplayers. Ten of last years squad arenot returning. It was nine theprevious year to that so the face ofthe Tech squad has changedconsiderably over the last twoseasons.

Legit reasons like finishinguni, retiring or moving back to ChCh.All of the young lads you havenamed are from out of town and arestudents. Liam Watson was amember of the squad last yearthough, as was Ashley Watson. “

However there is enough class in the Tech side, with a top keeper, ZaneGreen, steady defenders in Dave Hayman, Cam Higgins, and Liam Lockhart, plus the dashing Ross Howard and dangerman, Tim McLennan, plus anyonecalled Kal Bouma-Tucker - must be a good player eh?

The “old school” casual pre-game jog hasbeen given the red card by New Zealand Footballand ACC who have teamed up to launch a revolutionarynew warm-up programme aimed at tackling the growingfrequency and cost of injuries to players.New Zealand Football’s Fit4Football initiative has

been developed as a complete guide to matchpreparation, performance enhancement and injury

prevention for players of all ages and level ofcompetition.

Fit4Football’s 11+ warm-up component incorporatesFIFA’s 11+ programme, a 20-minute training and match-preparation routine used by many of the top club and nationalteams that has reduced acute injuries by up to 50 percent, and non-acute by up to 30 percent.

“Fit4Football changes that mind-set and canbenefit players of all ages and ability social to competitive, but our focus is on younger players especially, to help themdevelop new and far more effective routines and habits.”NZ Football and ACC have partnered to build a nationalinjury prevention and performance enhancing team, locatedaround New Zealand in the seven Federations.

“We’d encourage anyone involved in football, be they players, coaches, referees or team managers, to get along to a roadshow near them to learn about howFit4Football can significantly reduce the risk of injury.

“We want more people loving and playing football to the best of their ability,injury-free, for life. It’s about performing on the park, notsitting on the side-lines injured.” There have already beentwo Fit4Football sessions held by the Injury Prevention teamin Nelson and Christchurch and there are more to come inthe next two months.Come along to The Oval on 8th April, and see whatFit4Football is all about. There will be fun live demonstrationsof our 11+ warm up programme, face painting, inflatablehunger ball, prizes, giveaways and much more. Lot's of funto be had, and a great start to the football season.
