best exercises for women by Br ian atteber y, c .p.t.

throughout the years i have heard different opinions about what is the best way to work this, trim that or tone this. there are exercises

that fall into better or best categories for working out. for some, certain exercises work perfect while for others, that particular exercise might not be a good choice. let’s explore what exercises women should think about incorporating into their workouts and what ones they should not.

i have never met a woman that was completely satisfied with her rear end. to understand what exercises are best for the back side is to first understand a few things about human physiology and how women are unique.

if you are a woman that carries fat in the rear end, you must first understand that you can’t reduce that area by doing exercises specifically for the rear end. if you carry fat anywhere, it must be burned off through a combination of proper nutrition, cardio and weight training. as long as you understand that all three must be done to succeed, we can look at specific rear end exercises.

Barbell squats are a great exercise to work the entire thigh area. this is an advanced exercise that should not be rushed. if you have a bad lower back, you should never do squats with a barbell on your shoulders. there are numerous ways to simulate a squat without loading the spine with a barbell. you can squat with your body weight or roll up and down on an exercise ball against a wall.

the universal truth to squats is that you do not want to let your knees go over the ends of your toes because that can place pressure on the knees. the other universal truth is to never squat so low that you lose the normal curve in your lower back.

you might have heard of parallel quadriceps, or to descend until your quads are parallel to the ground.

Page 23: BragBook SU/FA 2012

for some, that is a good idea; for others, it might be better to focus on getting your hamstrings parallel to the ground rather than the quads.

if it hurts your joints, do not do it. how is that helping if it is injuring you? find a depth that allows you to maintain good posture while keeping your knees behind the plain of the end of your toes.

the next exercise to consider is your best bet for an exercise that works your rear and thighs, while not straining the lower back: the infamous lunges. once again, if you have bad knees you should think twice about this exercise.

the same rules apply to lunges as squats regarding your form: do not let your knees push forward over the point of your toes and do not round your back. going past parallel is a “no-no” as well.

i recommend performing this exercise no more than three days per week and then taking a break from it while doing something different for your legs after four to six weeks. doing them every day is a recipe for an over-use injury and will not help you achieve your goal faster.

We also must look at who should not do squats or lunges. if you are a woman who is very muscular in the legs and has a larger “bumble butt” look, you might think twice about working your back side too hard. Weight training builds muscle. lunges, although they use no dumbbells, are a “weight training” exercise using your body as the weight.

Why would you use more weights to make something smaller? you can do them lightly, but sometimes you need to take a break from them altogether to allow your upper body muscles to catch up to your body muscles. this will improve symmetry and make you appear less bottom-heavy.

you might try to maintain your thigh muscles by performing hamstring curls and leg extensions with a moderate amount of weight. this allows your quadriceps and hamstrings to be worked without using your rear end as much.

symmetry is the key to know what exercises to include or not include, and to emphasize or not emphasize. in other words, you might be able to add the lunges and squats back in once you have achieved your

upper body proportion. to get your body into proportion, you might include exercises for your upper back such as lat pull downs or seated rows.

We can’t ignore the shoulders. shoulders help taper your waist and hips, while bringing out the definition in your arms. exercises such as shoulder presses, side laterals and up-right rows are great choices for some women. shoulder presses are the highest risk exercise. individuals with low-back problems and/or shoulder problems should not perform this exercise.

another great exercise for women is to do shrugs. shrugs develop the trapezius muscles of the neck that give body builders that “big neck” look. i do not know of many women that want that look. instead, focus on the lower portion of the trapezius muscles that run between the shoulder blades and help with posture.

focus on these muscles by pinching your shoulder blades together while doing pulling movements such as rows or pull downs for the upper back muscles. you should also be conscious of these posture muscles by maintaining a slight pinch of the shoulder blades while performing virtually all exercises in the weight room.

good posture is crucial for proper weight training form. you should pinch the shoulder blades together and maintain a “chest up, shoulders back” posture that will help assure good posture and proper body alignment. this pinching form will also utilize the rhomboids that lie deeper toward the spine underneath the trapezius muscles.

cardiovascular exercise is critical to developing that long, lean look most women seek. many times i hear about what exercise is “best” for burning fat or sculpting the legs. i think the number one consideration is that you come up with a consistent plan of how much you are going to be doing and how often.

the type of cardio needs to vary daily or at least weekly. do not perform cardio workouts on the same machine at the same level and same intensity during every workout. this will lead to boredom, burnout and lack of progress. the human body is great at maintaining homeostasis. do not give it a reason to plateau by doing the same type of cardio every time.

as far as a best cardio workout, you need to do something that challenges you. i do not believe you must run to succeed. not everyone is built for running. plus, running can be hard on your knees. Walking is something everyone knows how to do and is usually a good starting point. make sure to vary your speed and incline for a variety component.

the elliptical is a great cardio machine because it simulates non-impact running. the freemotion strider is also a great cross-training machine that will absolutely rock your world. We purchased some of the machines last year and they provide quite the workout.

ultimately, cardio workouts are designed to burn fat and strengthen your heart. Be meticulous with your schedule and how you go about it so you can take the steps to keep pushing your body to the next level.

i once heard a student say that she does “man” exercises. there is no such thing as a man exercise because men and women have the same muscles. however, there are exercises that different body types need to avoid or place focus. there are muscles groups that are more difficult to build as a woman and others that are less important to build.

find a good trainer who understands your needs and will personalize a workout for you. group exercise classes are great, but they do not specify body types. only an educated professional can help you with that.

as a woman, embrace your unique body needs and do not fear the weight room. remember, a hard woman is good to find.

dr. robb schiermeyer has worked with first-time parents before, but there was something different about a young, expectant couple who came to see him. the couple had recently moved from texas to oklahoma and was “essentially alone,” he says. the mother-to-be was eight weeks along and had concerns working with a new doctor.

after some reassurance following their first visit, the couple continued with confidence on their prenatal course. the father attended every visit to the hospital, which dr. schiermeyer calls rare.

“her pregnancy continued without problems,” he recalls. “they discovered they were having a little boy and the father was beside himself.”

as the delivery date grew closer, the mother expressed concerns about her ability to deliver vaginally. she informed dr. schiermeyer that her mother had complications during her brother’s delivery that led to her mother undergoing several blood transfusions. in fact, she had been born via cesarean section.

Because of her family history, he was worried she may have difficulty delivering an average baby naturally. according to dr. schiermeyer, one of his biggest fears is having a patient with shoulder dystocia, which happens when the head delivers but the shoulders get stuck.

“if this occurs, there are only minutes to attempt a vaginal delivery through a series of maneuvers,” he explains. “if this fails, we move to emergent cesarean section that carries increased morbidity for the infant.”

dr. schiermeyer’s concerns for his patient were legitimate due to her body shape. the young, expectant mother was tall and thin with a narrow pelvis. “her baby had been growing appropriately, which translates to at least a seven-pound term infant,” he says.

the mother desperately wanted to have a vaginal delivery birth and was afraid of having a cesarean section procedure. after several discussions with dr. schiermeyer, she agreed to wait until she went into labor rather than scheduling an induction, which heightens the possibility of a cesarean section.

around her due date at 3 a.m., dr.

schiermeyer received the call that her water had broken and she was having occasional contractions. after arriving to the hospital, integris health edmond nurses performed routine protocols and he evaluated her in the morning. the evaluations showed that mother and baby were doing well.

as her contractions became more painful, nurses administered an epidural. dr. schiermeyer was checking up on his other patients around 1 p.m. when he was notified that the fetus was showing signs of distress.

“i ran to her room expecting the worst,” he says. “i thought we would need to perform an emergency cesarean section and knew how scared she was of that possibility.”

When he got to her room, the monitor showed that there were signs of tachysystole, which means that the contractions were occurring too close together causing the baby’s heart rate to decrease. to prevent this, the nurses helped the mother change positions in order to increase perfusion of blood to the baby.

dr. schiermeyer was impressed that his patient was able to hold herself up on

Since opening in october 2011, integris health edmond offers the community a

complete range of family care services. the facility boasts a 24/7 emergency department, a spacious intensive care unit, medical and surgical suites, as well as an extensive Women’s center.

to cater to all of women’s unique needs, the Women’s center boasts advanced technology and an experienced staff.

“the hospital is state-of-the-art,” said robb schiermeyer, doctor of osteopathic medicine in obstetrics and gynecology at integris health edmond. “the patient rooms are designed to incorporate the natural landscape of the campus to promote comfort and healing.”

the hospital’s labor & delivery unit has labor and delivery, and postpartum experts on hand to help any woman through her birthing journey. coupled with the latest technology, the knowledgeable staff has one thing in mind

A Doctor’s Success StoryBy Kandace taylor

Page 35: BragBook SU/FA 2012

A Doctor’s Success Storyall fours despite being under the influence of the epidural she had received earlier that caused her to lose sensation in her legs.

luckily, the quick maneuvering worked and the baby’s heart rate improved. the medical team and the expectant parents were relieved that the cesarean section option could be avoided at that time, but they were warned that if something like that happened again, it was one of the only options in order to deliver a safe, healthy baby.

“everyone wanted what was best for the baby,” dr. schiermeyer said.

around 8 p.m. that day, he was informed it was time to deliver. dr. schiermeyer recalls driving back to the hospital as the first snow of the year was falling.

after pushing for around 30 minutes and without difficulty, mother and father welcomed a healthy 7-pound, 3-ounce baby boy into the world.

in the follow-up evaluation the next morning, the new mother told dr. schiermeyer how much she appreciated his care and patience.

“she was worried that something ‘bad’ was going to happen,” dr. schiermeyer says. “But after she saw the response of everyone, she said she knew things would be alright.”

if you’ve read anything about being beautiful in this decade, you know most of the beauty treatments involve some sort of machine. all of these machines plug in. if you want to plug into beauty today, you must know about the different electronic ways to fix aging and enhance your beauty.

laser hair remoVal – the primary principle behind laser hair removal is selective photothermolysis. this is the matching of a specific wavelength of light and pulse duration to obtain an optimal effect on the targeted tissue with minimal effect on surrounding tissue. lasers can cause localized damage by selectively heating dark target matter. light is absorbed by dark objects so laser energy can be absorbed by dark material into the skin, but with more speed and intensity. Because of the selective absorption of laser light, only black or brown hair can be removed. lasers work best with dark, coarse hair ; light skin and dark hair are an ideal combination because this pairing produces the best results. however, new lasers are now able to target dark black hair with some success in patients with dark skin.

initially you will need six to eight treatments. some patients will need touch-up treatments afterward. these treatments are accomplished between three to eight weeks apart depending on the area being treated. the number of sessions depends on various parameters including the area of the body being treated, skin color, coarseness of hair, and gender. hair grows in several phases and the laser can only affect the actively-growing hair follicles. Because hair grows in crops, several sessions are needed to kill hair in all phases of growth.

laser resurfacing – laser resurfacing is a technique used where the molecular bonds are dissolved by the laser. it is used for the treatment of wrinkles, sun damage, scars, and stretch marks. the first complete resurfacing is typically done with the co2 laser. laser resurfacing is done most commonly with a fractional laser. the term fractional pertains to a method in which the laser light is delivered. tiny pinpoints of laser light deliver the laser to the surface of the skin. several hundred or thousands of laser pinpoints may be used per square inch leaving healthy skin between the ablative areas to allow the skin more rapid healing and lower risks. co2 and yag lasers are used to treat deep wrinkles, sun damage and age spots. through the heating of the deep dermis, fibroblasts are stimulated to form new collagen and elastin helping to bring increased thickness and elasticity to the skin as well as a tightening.

laser Vein remoVal – laser vein removal is done with a variety of lasers. skin color and the size of the vein play a big role in the success rate of the removal. they all work on the same principle: a light beam is pulsed onto the veins in order to seal them off, causing them to dissolve. radiofrequencies are occasionally used to close off larger veins.

intense pulsed light (ipl) – intense pulsed light (ipl) technology is used in the treatment of medical disorders of the skin including sun damage, induced brown or red changes of the skin, rosacea, broken capillaries and vascular or pigmented birthmarks.

thermage, accent, lipo-ex, refirme, Venus freeze - radiofrequency ablation is a medical procedure where a radiofrequency wave is targeted at a specific depth to achieve either heating or injury of the deepest part of the dermis. if the waves are focused deeper, the radiofrequency can be used to melt fat. the radiofrequency machines are typically used as reshaping tools either to change the shape of the body or the contour of the skin. these machines are used to tighten the neck, lift the cheeks, lift the brows, and sculpt the waist to minimize cellulite and improve stretch marks.

ulthera – ultrasound is a cyclic sound pressure with a frequency greater than the upper limit of human hearing. ultrasound is used in the beauty business to tighten the skin. its action is not dissimilar to radiofrequency in that it focuses on the base of the dermis and creates heat, which injures the dermis. as the dermis heals, it contracts and tightens forming new collagen and fibrous tissue.

Vacuum & laser – endermology is a non-surgical treatment approved by the u.s. food and drug administration (fda) for cellulite reduction. it includes suction and motorized rollers that result in reduction of cellulite and loss of inches.

smart lipo or accusculpt - accusculpt is called laser assisted liposuction, but there is no suction involved at all. a fiber optic cannula is placed through a pin prick to the skin into the fatty layer of the neck, face or body. laser light is then emitted through the fiber optic light source and the fat is melted. laser light is also used to bathe under the surface of the skin that creates the minor injury, which results in tighter skin when healed.

zerona – the zerona laser emits low-level laser energy that stimulates the fat cell liquefying the fat within. this liquid fat

moves from the inside to the outside where your lymphatic system clears it. zerona works primarily on the fat just below the skin.

zeltiq – zeltiq is a coolsculpting procedure that takes between one and three hours. the area to be treated is marked and covered with a gel pad. a handheld vacuum applicator then draws the excess skin and underlying fat between two cooling panels. the cooling process lasts for a predetermined amount of time it takes to damage the fat cells, turning fat within the cells from a liquid to a solid. the fat is naturally flushed from your body in the ensuing two months. there is no evidence that the procedure has any adverse effects on the liver enzymes or cholesterol in the blood.

microdermaBrasion - micro-dermabrasion is used to rid the skin of the dead layers of the epidermis. it is either a diamond burr that buffs the dead skin cells into a vacuum that carries them away, or it can be a type of sandblasting procedure with crystals that knock dead cells off that are then suctioned into a receptacle.

there are so many wonderful, effective treatments available today. Be aware that each of these companies and each of these providers spend a lot of time, energy, and money to promote their products. you need to do your own research to determine what will work best for you. even the best machines and techniques do not produce the same results. lastly, i never think it hurts to get more than one opinion.

Acupuncture

and Fertility

more and more women are now waiting until later in life to have children. unfortunately, the longer you wait, the more challenging it becomes to conceive. if you

have tried every possible modern method to increase your fertility and you have not been able to conceive or to carry to term, do not give up. there is another option that you have probably never thought of: the ancient art of acupuncture.

dr. seyoung Kim, d.c., a licensed chiropractor and acupuncturist in oklahoma city, says that many couples are turning to this age-old chinese treatment to increase fertility and their chances of conception.

acupuncture involves the strategic placement of tiny needles into patterns on the body. the needles are used to stimulate certain key energy points believed to regulate spiritual, mental, emotional, and physical balance. Without the proper balance, channels of life energy, called qi, can be disrupted and can cause disease and ailments.

“But the body has the power to heal itself,” dr. Kim says. placing acupuncture needles in certain

areas of qi normalizes the body and helps your body to promote self-healing. “a host of ailments can be fixed and the body is balanced,” he says.

stress, along with environmental factors and internal factors, can unbalance the body, disrupt ovulation, adversely affect fertility, and decrease your chances of becoming pregnant. that’s where acupuncture comes in.

acupuncture helps balance the body for conception and encourages fertility by increasing and moving the flow of qi from areas where there may be too much energy, to areas that are deficient. this helps to normalize the body, alleviate stressors, increase blood flow, and improve circulation to the reproductive organs. then, the odds of conception are increased and the eggs have a better chance of being nourished and carried to full-term.

during the procedure, approximately 10 acupuncture needles are placed in strategic areas of the body specifically for stress and fertility points. dr. Kim says that women should receive three of these treatments a week for a month or until conception.

acupuncture is also beneficial in conjunction

with modern fertility treatments. studies show that acupuncture enhances the success rate of in vitro fertilization (iVf). Women receiving fertility treatments like iVf are treated with acupuncture for several months beforehand, as well as post embryo transfer.

Whether trying acupuncture in conjunction with other fertility treatments or alone, more women are looking to the ancient treatment to increase their chances of a successful pregnancy. dr. Kim says that within the last year, four women have received acupuncture treatments from him to increase their fertility. two of the women conceived and had successful, healthy pregnancies. one of these four women, christi Koehn of oklahoma city, gave birth to a baby boy, Jude, in may.

christi says that she did not have a problem conceiving, but she had difficulty carrying to full-term. she miscarried three times in the 12 months prior to trying acupuncture treatments. she says her progesterone levels were dropping early in each pregnancy, causing her to miscarry. two of the three times christi became pregnant, she took oral progesterone at the time of ovulation, but still

Page 49: BragBook SU/FA 2012

miscarried. finally, christi discovered information about

how acupuncture could help her and she gave dr. Kim a call. christi says she expected the acupuncture treatments to help her feel better, and they did. “acupuncture, for me, helped relieve stress tremendously,” she says. “each visit i would leave feeling so relaxed. that is a wonderful reason in and of itself to try it.”

christi says that even the needles that pinch just a bit are ultimately relaxing. relieving stress is extremely vital to a healthy and successful pregnancy.

after a year of miscarriages, christi’s body was out of tune. she feels that acupuncture restored balance to her body and brought her body’s flow of energy to a normal level. “there was a blockage of energy and acupuncture released it,” christi explains. “the energy could get to where it needed to go again.”

While receiving acupuncture treatments, christi was also seeing a reproductive endocrinologist. “i was put through rigorous testing to determine if there was a reason for all the miscarriages only to be told i was perfectly, painfully healthy.” her reproductive endocrinologist was supportive of christi’s choice to receive acupuncture treatments and prescribed a vaginal progesterone suppository, which she used from the date of ovulation.

“We conceived the first month of trying, which also coincided with my acupuncture treatments,” christi says. she had been receiving acupuncture for about a month and a half prior to conception. following dr. Kim’s recommendation, she stopped receiving the acupuncture treatments after she became pregnant. she continued using the progesterone supplement until 13 weeks gestation.

christi fully believes that the acupuncture treatments enabled her body to break the cycle of miscarriage. “there is no way to know if it was exclusively the acupuncture or the vaginal progesterone suppositories, but considering i had taken oral progesterone before to no avail, i feel it was a combination of the two,” she says.

once christi conceived, she and her husband were understandably apprehensive because they had already conceived and miscarried three times in the year prior to trying acupuncture. however, christi says that once they had passed the eight-week mark, they knew they were going to be successful. “and now we have a beautiful 1-month-old son,” she says.

While she and her husband do not plan on having any more children, if they ever changed their minds, she says she would use acupuncture therapy again. “i will probably use it again for

unrelated reasons.” christi also recommends acupuncture to other women trying to conceive. “it’s worth it for the stress relief alone, and if it can't hurt, then it’s worth a try.”

Brooke rivera of oklahoma city also became pregnant while receiving acupuncture treatments at dr. Kim’s clinic. Brooke and her husband, danny, had been trying to conceive for more than a year when they learned how acupuncture could help them.

danny had been visiting dr. Kim for chiropractic care when he was informed that acupuncture could increase fertility.

Brooke says that before she tried acupuncture, she had a hysterosalpingogram (hsg), which tests the integrity of the uterine cavity and the fallopian tubes. she and danny discovered that she had blockage in her fallopian tubes.

“from there i was on clomid for four months, taking a higher dose each month in hopes that our dream of becoming pregnant would come true,” Brooke says. “When it didn’t, we stopped taking the clomid and planned on starting our first cycle of iVf.”

fortunately for them, they tried acupuncture treatments first and were able to cancel that scheduled cycle of iVf. in fact, Brooke did not receive any other fertility treatments while she was receiving her acupuncture treatments. after approximately three acupuncture treatments, she became pregnant with the couple’s first child.

“Words cannot describe how happy and overjoyed we were when we found out we were expecting,” Brooke exclaims. “it was the happiest day ever!”

they credit this happy news to the acupuncture treatments Brooke received. “We feel that with dr. Kim’s help, the acupuncture played a major role in our successful pregnancy.”

Brooke was admittedly a little intimidated and skeptical of the treatments at first. “But, with dr. Kim’s experience and professionalism, he made the entire experience with acupuncture enjoyable and beneficial,” she says.

now, Brooke recommends acupuncture to other women and couples trying to conceive. “i am a firm believer in acupuncture!” When Brooke and danny are ready to have more children, Brooke says that she will definitely try acupuncture treatments with dr. Kim again.

Before you try acupuncture to enhance your own chances of a successful pregnancy, it is a good idea to see your gynecologist or fertility doctor. your doctor can find out if a medical condition or structural defect is preventing you from getting pregnant.

if you do not have a medical condition, you are an excellent candidate for acupuncture to

increase fertility. unfortunately, acupuncture cannot help you become pregnant if you have structural problems such as blocked fallopian tubes or a fibroid tumor.

there are still benefits to acupuncture and zero risks to your health if your acupuncturist has been properly trained. the acupuncture needles used at reputable clinics are also completely safe. they are disposable and thrown out after one use. the needles may cause slight discomfort the first time you try acupuncture, but dr. Kim says that most women do not even feel them.

not only are acupuncture needles virtually painless, but they are also often relied on to relieve and manage pain because acupuncture can help your body release its own natural pain relievers. Because of this, acupuncture is often used to relieve headaches, back pain, and even labor pain.

Women who do not wish to be medicated when they give birth can instead receive acupuncture during labor to reduce their pain naturally. the Bastyr center for natural health says that in studies comparing acupuncture with conventional care, women receiving acupuncture requested significantly fewer pain-relieving interventions and felt less pain during labor.

Whether you desire to manage your pain naturally, melt away stress, restore a healthy balance to your body, or increase your fertility, there is a host of helpful acupuncture treatments that can improve your health and wellbeing.

Whichever reason you have to give acupuncture a try, dr. Kim says that you have nothing to lose. he says that acupuncture treatments can only help, not hurt, by relieving stress, restoring proper energy flow, and balancing the body for a healthier, happier you.

oklahomans might recognize Jeff george from his current role as fox 25’s storm Watch chief meteorologist. But there’s much more to him; Jeff is also a military veteran, a philanthropist, and a family man.

raised in and between pittsburgh, pa., and Wheeling, W.Va., Jeff left home during the gulf War in 1991 to join the u.s. air force. he spent more than nine years on active duty in the air force, one year in the air force reserve, and one year in the army national guard.

“my ultimate career goals were to be a meteorologist and to serve our country,” Jeff says. “the air force gave me the perfect situation to accomplish both missions at the same time.”

during his time in the u.s. military, aircraft completed combat missions based on Jeff ’s weather briefings and forecasts. he also volunteered to provide forecasts during high-level visits from members of the united states congress, the secretary of defense, and the president of the united states.

Jeff says he was blessed with the opportunity to serve our

country during a time of war. “there was no better feeling than watching an aircraft take off and land safely based on my weather briefing,” he says. “mission accomplished!”

the highlight of his military career outside of his forecasting duties was receiving the John levitow award in airman leadership school. it is the highest honor presented to a graduate of professional military education.

While Jeff was making his mark in the air force, he completed his degree in Weather technology. later, he received a degree in Broadcasting and geosciences. unfortunately, a nagging injury caught up with Jeff forcing him to leave the armed forces. he says leaving his military career was one of the toughest decisions he has ever had to make and that he hadn’t planned on pursuing a career in tV.

“the opportunity unexpectedly presented itself,” he says. “i’m one of those guys who has to constantly challenge himself, performs well under high-pressure situations, and loves being in front of people. my experience in the armed forces gave me the courage to take

that next step in my career.” Jeff says that the military simply made him

the man he is today.during his time in the air force, Jeff called

many places home. his years of service took him to florida, mississippi, louisiana, and italy. for more than five years, Jeff has hung his hat in oklahoma and says he has never felt more at home in his life.

Jeff started out in oklahoma as the morning meteorologist at fox 25 and was promoted one year later. he has proudly been the storm Watch chief meteorologist at the news station for more than four years now.

he admits he is following some big footsteps as a weatherman in oklahoma. “oklahoma is fortunate to still have pioneers in the field of broadcast meteorology, and there is no replacing these guys,” Jeff says. “my goal is to carry on their passion of informing, educating, and protecting oklahomans and their families with every ounce of weather skills that i have.”

Jeff encountered his most frightening weather experience on may 24, 2011. “We

had three tornadic supercell thunderstorms bearing down on the oklahoma city metro area at one time,” he recalls. “We did everything in our power to warn our viewers and to keep them as safe as possible. But, its sad knowing something really bad is about to happen, and there’s only so much you can do.”

Jeff is passionate about preparing his viewers for every weather situation – from severe thunderstorms to tornados. Because of this, he is constantly keeping up with the latest weather technology and safety information.

When Jeff is not on the airwaves presenting viewers with daily forecasts, he uses the power of the media to raise awareness of causes in the metro. one important cause that Jeff supports is the children’s center in Bethany. the center is a private, nonprofit pediatric hospital serving children with complex medical and physical disabilities.

last year, Jeff created and marketed a cookbook, “firehouse favorites: 100 recipes to heat up your Kitchen and Warm your heart.” the cookbook features original recipes submitted by firefighters across oklahoma along with artwork from the children at the pediatric hospital. all proceeds from the cookbook go toward the children’s center.

furthering this cause, Jeff works closely with local firefighters during his monthly cooking segment on fox 25 morning news called firehouse favorites.

“i realized that the children’s center and the firefighters, although different, still share the same common mission: helping people when they need help the most,” Jeff says. “it was a true blessing that we agreed to partner on the project to make this dream come true.”

Jeff is also the current spokesman for local muscular dystrophy association (mda) events and is an emcee for the Juvenile diabetes research foundation (Jdrf).

he brings more support to the table as an executive member of the Beef 4 Battle project, a coalition of oklahoma farmers and ranchers who donate locally-processed beef to deployed oklahoma troops. “i am in charge of the fundraising efforts to ensure our soldiers are supplemented with this extra nutritional boost as they defend us in the field,” he said.

in addition to these ongoing efforts, Jeff volunteers in schools across the metro. Jeff and the fox 25 weather team visit and educate local schools on meteorology and severe weather safety.

for the 2012-2013 school year, he plans on launching fox 25’s first organized weather school program called future forecasters. “soaking up the science of meteorology and breaking down weather safety will be a blast with our simplified and highly-interactive presentation,” Jeff said.

on top of evolving fox 25’s future forecasters, Jeff ’s weather team will also focus on giving away storm shelters and weather radios this fall to many of fox 25 viewers at no cost. in the event of extreme weather, Jeff wants to keep oklahoma as safe as possible.

this summer, Jeff is staying busy in the community by serving on the children’s center’s media committee as well as co-emceeing the easter seals of oklahoma’s Blast from the past gala and the children’s miracle network’s dancing for a miracle gala. he is also assisting with the fundraising for both events.

another one of Jeff ’s big projects is organizing a run and concert for together We rise, a nonprofit organization that raises money to provide bicycles for foster children. Jeff serves as the local media representative

for the organization and believes “every kid should have a bike.”

Jeff ’s motivation as a philanthropist is solely to make a difference. “there are so many worthy, needy causes and a significant number of oklahomans who want to give,” he says. “i simply want to work hard to get these people together.”

When Jeff isn’t busy working on a community project, he spends every free moment with his wife and sons. “they are my best friends and give me purpose for everything i do.”

in addition to believing in his passion for giving back, Jeff says his family is supportive of his career. “they either help or attend most of my events. they’ve also all starred in various fox promotions and sometimes get recognized before i do!”

Jeff has two boys with his wife, angela; ethan is 9 and Jack is 6. so far, Jeff says his boys don’t seem too impressed with his television career.

“as of now, ethan wants to play for the oklahoma city thunder and Jack wants to be a pro wrestler,” he says.

long before ethan and Jack were musing about their futures, Jeff and angela had

their first meeting in an elementary school classroom in hawley, texas. he was giving a weather talk to a class while angela, now a kindergarten teacher, was student-teaching at the time.

“it was one of the worst presentations i’ve ever given,” Jeff admits. “i love trying to educate the kids, but all i really cared about that day was if their teacher was single, and if she was crazy about me, too.”

angela apparently was crazy about him… and still is. the couple has been married for more than 10 years.

over the last decade, Jeff has experienced a thrilling military career, an exciting job as a tV weather personality, and his most stimulating experience yet: skydiving. throughout all these achievements, Jeff says his biggest adventure has been finding a balance between his career, his philanthropic efforts, and his family, which he says is the most important thing in his life.

“i strive to be a good husband, to be a role model to my boys, and to lead by example at work,” he says. “Balancing these things ‘effectively’ is an adventure that i welcome everyday.”

Women have called their menstrual cycle many things over the years. infamous references such as

“the curse,” “aunt flow,” “that time of the month,” and getting a visit from our “friend” have become household code words to disguise our monthly rite of passage.

We girls know that this so-called “friend” behaves more like a foe, often inviting bloating, cramping, fatigue, nausea, and moodiness to visit us, too. these guests come with the territory and most women have learned how to deal with them. however, millions of women are dealing with a heavy menstrual cycle, a serious problem that can harm a woman’s health, wellbeing, and quality of life.

the centers for disease control and prevention (cdc) says heavy bleeding that lasts more than seven days, called menorrhagia, is one of the most common problems women report to their doctors. menorrhagia often causes more bleeding than a woman can contain with feminine hygiene products.

BragBook magazine asked dr. allison huebert, md, of renaissance physicians in midwest city about the problem. dr. huebert says that heavy menstrual cycles are more common as women approach the menopausal years in their early 40s and older. Women enter a transitional phase as they enter menopause that can cause excessive bleeding during menstruation. you might not think that this problem could affect you, but heavy periods can happen to women of any age.

the cdc says menorrhagia affects more than 10 million american women each year. this means that about one out of every five women is suffering with a heavy menstrual cycle when they do not have to.

dr. huebert says it is definitely a concern if a woman’s menstrual cycle is continuously heavy and lasts more than seven days. a heavy menstrual cycle can cause a woman to become anemic, which is having a dangerously low blood count. dr. huebert says that the two main concerns are preventing anemia and identifying the cause of the bleeding. “sometimes, abnormal bleeding indicates a serious problem like thyroid imbalance, or even precancerous or cancerous cells in the uterus,” she said.

heavy menstrual cycles may also cause severe cramping, fatigue, and uncontainable heavy bleeding that leads to women staying home from work, abstaining from exercise, and missing out on living their daily lives. “it can really affect quality of life,” says dr. huebert.

so, how do you know if you should see a doctor? if you need to repeatedly change your tampon or pad after only a couple of hours or less, or you pass clots the size of a quarter or larger during your cycle, you should see your gynecologist.

additional signs of a heavy menstrual cycle include needing to change pads or tampons during the night, a period that lasts longer than seven days, a menstrual cycle that keeps you from normal daily activity, constant pain in the lower stomach, and extreme fatigue.

it is important to note that one isolated heavy period that goes away on its own may only be a random occurrence. dr. huebert says such an isolated heavy or lengthy period can happen due to stress or a sudden change in lifestyle.

there are many causes of heavy periods. dr. huebert says that if certain hormones are not doing what they are supposed to do in a woman’s body, the result may be a heavy menstrual cycle. uterine fibroids or polyps, benign growths in or outside the uterus, can also cause heavy menstrual bleeding.

“in women over 35 years old especially,” dr. huebert says, “heavy bleeding can also be caused by precancerous cells or even early uterine cancer.”

the cdc says other causes of heavy periods are liver, kidney, or thyroid disease, irregular periods, irregular ovulation, cervical cancer, pelvic inflammatory disease, and bleeding-related disorders.

despite this, dr. huebert says that many women have a heavy flow without any underlying health condition. the cdc reports

How it’s Affecting Millions of Women & What You Can Do to Improve Your Quality of Life

Menorrhagia:

Page 65: BragBook SU/FA 2012

that doctors have not been able to find a cause in half of all women who have heavy periods. even without a detectable cause, there are many options for women who want to lighten a heavy menstrual cycle and improve their quality of life.

dr. huebert says one of the easiest things that women can do to lighten a heavy period is to take anti-inflammatory medicines, such as ibuprofen. taken at the beginning of a cycle, anti-inflammatory medicines can lessen the severity of a heavy flow.

however, dr. huebert says this is only an appropriate solution if a woman’s flow is mild to moderately heavy.

Birth control pills are an appropriate solution for most women who want to regulate their periods. Birth control pills can give women a lighter period with less bleeding and less pain for fewer days. dr. huebert says that all birth control pills work well, but it sometimes requires a bit of trial and error to find the right birth control pill that makes you feel good and controls your period optimally. if one pill doesn’t provide the results you want, talk to your gynecologist.

there is also an entire new category of birth control pills called extensive cycle pills that allow you to only have one period every third month. dr. huebert says, “it’s a safe thing to do for women who have painful or heavy periods.” she says it is especially beneficial for women who are anemic, because they will only menstruate once every three months.

if birth control pills are not a good option for you, try hormone therapy with progesterone taken daily or even just part of the month. there is also a new medication that is hormone free and specifically designed to decrease menstrual bleeding.

intrauterine contraception (iuc) is another option for women who want to lighten their heavy periods. a drug-releasing device is placed inside the uterus to help make periods more regular and reduce the amount of bleeding.

antifibrinolytic medicines can also reduce the amount of menstrual bleeding by stopping a clot from breaking down once it has formed. in addition, there are medications that release a clotting protein that helps the blood to clot and stop the excessive menstrual bleeding.

surgical therapy is an option for women

who are finished childbearing and are experiencing heavy menstrual cycles. dilation and curettage (d&c) is an outpatient procedure in which the lining of the uterus is scraped off and removed.

a more advanced option is endometrial ablation. instead of scraping the lining of the uterus as in d&c, this outpatient surgery uses lasers to burn the uterine lining and cells. dr. huebert says, “this surgery has a high success rate and a very good recovery rate.”

myosure, or polyp removal, is another surgical option for women who are finished childbearing and have heavy periods caused by uterine polyps. myosure is an outpatient surgery utilizing instruments that enter the cervix and remove the polyps. no incisions are necessary and the recovery time is fast.

a more extensive procedure with a 100 percent success rate is a hysterectomy. the uterus is completely removed from the woman’s body during this surgical procedure. dr. huebert says that as with any surgery that requires incisions, general anesthetic

Dr. Allison Huebert, MD, is a Shawnee, Okla. native. She is married with four children. She attended medical school at the University of Oklahoma where she also completed her residency in obstetrics and gynecology. Dr. Huebert is board-certified and currently completing her tenth year of private practice. She joined Renaissance Physicians at Midwest Regional Medical Center in 2009 where she offers comprehensive obstetric and gynecologic care, including robotic pelvic surgery.

complications, bleeding, infection, and damage to nearby structures in the body are risks that patients take.

however, these risks remain small. dr. huebert says, “advances in surgical techniques, including robotic hysterectomy, lead to smaller incisions and faster recovery.”

operative hysteroscopy is another surgical option for some women. the cdc says this procedure uses a special tool to view the inside of the uterus. this tool can be used to help remove polyps and fibroids, correct abnormalities of the uterus, and remove the lining of the uterus to manage a heavy menstrual flow.

there are many good options your doctor can suggest to control your heavy menstrual cycle. some options may be better solutions for you than others. the bottom line is: if you are suffering from the symptoms of a heavy period, you deserve a better quality of life.

talk to your doctor and make a plan to take control and regulate your monthly menstrual cycle.

W ayman t i sda le ’s life was filled with a lot of love. the former professional

basketball player loved the sport as well as music, church, and his high school sweetheart and wife, regina. after his untimely death in 2009, regina saw a way to carry on Wayman’s compassionate spirit through a foundation they launched shortly before his passing.

the Wayman tisdale foundation provides limbs for those without insurance throughout oklahoma and the united states. Wayman and regina started the foundation after being inspired by their personal journey with Wayman becoming an amputee. in early 2007, the tisdales discovered bone cancer in Wayman’s knee. after some attempts were made with chemotherapy, the decision was made to amputate part of his right leg in late 2008.

certified prosthetist scott sabolich is the owner and executive director of sabolich prosthetic and research center. he first met Wayman in 2008 to fit him for a prosthetic limb. “When we fit him [for the prosthesis] and he heard how much prosthetics actually cost, his question was: ‘what about the people that can’t afford them?’” sabolich recalls. “he got very emotional.” through working with Wayman, sabolich developed a bond with the tisdales. he chose to get involved with the foundation to carry on Wayman’s dream. “Wayman was an amazing man to work with and it really tugged at my heart strings to see him pass,” sabolich said. “i am glad to see regina carrying on one of

his last wishes: to see that those that need a second chance at life get one.”

sabolich par ticipates with the foundation by fitting recipients with prosthetics. this year, the foundation focused its fundraising effor ts on the Wayman tisdale memorial golf tournament held in early June. the funds raised at the golf tournament benefit individuals who are in need of a prosthetic. regina was thrilled to announce at the tournament that the foundation selected a deserving recipient, a man who lost his leg below the knee after suffering complications from an accident in 2007.

in an effor t to give back to the community, or thopedic associates, inc. made the decision to host the golf tournament with proceeds benefiting the foundation. the physicians joined regina in bringing in funds and raising awareness of the foundation. dr. michael Kiehn, an orthopedic sports medicine specialist at orthopedic associates, says the organization was honored to help host the golf tournament and join the foundation in its efforts to provide limbs for those in need.

“our goal for this golf tournament is to help the Wayman tisdale foundation provide funds to benefit individuals who are in need of a prosthesis,” dr. Kiehn said. “We hope that this tournament will be an

bragBOOK Magazine.com 7 7

annual event and continue to grow and raise more money to benefit more people who could not afford a prostheses.” regina says the process of choosing a recipient is fairly easy. foundation board members go through applications of individuals in need of a limb. soon after they are selected, they are contacted and begin the fitting procedures.

since launching, the foundation has already experienced many success stories including helping a man who was in a farming accident and a diabetic patient who lost a leg. “they are both now working and returned to a normal lifestyle,” regina says. “the success is helping individuals return

to a normal lifestyle.” regina’s hope for the future of the Wayman tisdale foundation is to continue the progress. for her, the foundation keeps Wayman’s larger-than-life spirit and dreams alive, which makes her happy.

“Wayman was known for his infectious smile, his ability to make a perfect stranger feel as though they had been friends forever,” regina says. “With that being said, what i want remembered was his good will toward man. it doesn’t matter what you may be facing, never stop fighting.”

Let’s face it – we all have stress in our lives. stress

can affect every aspect of our everyday life with detrimental physical and mental strain. it is important to have the ability to step back, take a deep breath and priori-tize your life in order to overcome stress.

douglas riddle, m.d., is a physician at deaconess family care – rose creek and is experienced in family medicine and dealing with stress. dr. riddle says it is important to determine the cause of stress as well as prepare for unexpected stressors.

“for most of us, there are multiple things that are adding to our stress on a daily basis,” dr. riddle says. “We must establish a priority system for our lives and stick to it. the higher priority items take precedence.”

Prioritizing Your Life Don’t Let StreSS Affect

Your HeALtHby Kandace Taylor

according to dr. riddle, the items higher on the list of priorities should consume most of our time; as you work down the list, things should consume less time.

for him, religion comes first. “if you put god first, you can’t do any

of the rest of it wrong,” he explains. “next comes family. i would put hobbies and time with friends third, followed by job/career.”

oftentimes careers inexplicably move up on our priority list. While this is completely normal, dr. riddle says we need to keep in mind that careers are simply a means of doing things you enjoy such as extracurricular activities and spending time with family and friends.

sleep should be high on the priority list as it can directly affect your health. getting an adequate amount of sleep

helps your brain handle stress and anxiety better. additional effects of stress include a variety of mind and body functions such as overall mood, weight management and development of chronic illnesses.

for some of his stressed patients, dr. riddle will prescribe that they take a vacation for a week. he instructs them to evaluate all aspects of life including stress levels, frequency of headaches, their sex life, and depression or anxiety levels.

the typical finding is that the patient’s high levels of stress will disappear once they pull themselves away from their work computer or phone, and take some time to spend with loved ones.

if you’re feeling stressed, take dr. riddle’s advice and prioritize your life. “once you prioritize your life,” he says, “everything else begins to fall into place.”

William Banner, M.D.

It’s that time of year again. The sun is out, and so are all the things that creep, crawl, slither, bite and sting. It’s also the time of year when kids love to explore, hike, dig and see what’s hiding under that big rock in the backyard.

There aren’t many poisonous creatures in Oklahoma, but the ones we have can do serious damage: brown recluses (“fiddlebacks”), black widows, rattlesnakes, copperheads and water moccasins (cottonmouth). With the right care, these bites are almost never fatal, and at INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center, we have everything needed to treat insect and snake bites, including the metro’s foremost bug expert: Dr. William Banner.

Dr. Banner is a pediatric physician working in the dedicated pediatric unit at Baptist, but he’s also the medical director for the Oklahoma Poison Control Center, and no one knows more about treating spider and snake bites. So when the spiders and snakes bite, bug Dr. Banner.

DON’T CaRE fOR BITES?We Do.
