Braille Module 36-4

Curriculum Content

A. Initial-Letter Contractions (1 hour)

Objective BS36.1: Know the initial-letter contractions.

PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

The instructor will be familiar with LOC Manual: Lesson 9.1and EBAE XIV.45 concerning

the rules for initial-letter contractions in general.

You will need the following handouts: Lesson 9: Contraction List (36.A.1), Lesson 9:

Quiz (36.A.2) and Answers to Lesson 9: Quiz (36.A.3).

You will need a copy of Lesson 9 flashcards (Les9Flashcards.docx).

Each student will need a copy of the Contractions Chart. The instructor will have a copy

of the Answers to the Contractions Chart (Lesson 9 Contractionschart.xls).

CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION The instructor will pass out Lesson 9: Quiz (36.A.2). The quiz is an inquiry to the knowledge of the students prior to studying Lesson 9 in class. This quiz is to test to see if

the student has read the lesson prior to class.

The quiz contains all of the braille characters the students will learn in Lesson 9. This

includes the all of the initial-letter contractions. The students will be required to fill in the

table with these characters.

The outcome of this quiz is to test the students of their knowledge of the new braille

characters introduced in Lesson 9.

The instructor will introduce the initial-letter contractions by implementing the flashcards for this lesson. Use flash cards to introduce the initial-letter contractions for day, ever, father, here, know, lord, mother, name, one, part, question, right, some, time, under, work, young, character, through, where, ought, there, upon, word, those, whose, these, cannot, had, many, spirit, world, and their.

Some reminders to the students:

“Remember that the initial-letter contractions are two-cell contractions.

Use the flashcards in and out of the classroom to your advantage. The flashcards

will help you to memorize the contractions quicker.”

If time permits you may also want to review the flash cards from Lesson 8.

PROFITT Curriculum Module # 36 — Initial-Letter Contractions

Braille Module 36-5

Have the students make their flashcards for Lesson 9 using the index cards.

Continue to encourage the use of the flash cards in the class room and privately.

As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 9.1-9.1a-b introducing how the original pronunciation must be maintained and when original pronunciation is lost.

B. Exceptions to the General Rule (3 hours)

ObjectiveBS36.2: Demonstrate a growing proficiency and understanding of the exceptions

to the general rules.

PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

The instructor will also be familiar with LOC Manual: Lesson 9.2 pertaining to rules for initial-letter contractions and how the original pronunciation must be maintained and when

original pronunciation is lost. They will also be familiar with Drill 26.

You will need the following handouts: Lesson 9.1-9.2: Worksheet 1 (36.B.1),

Answers to Lesson 9.1-9.2: Worksheet 1 (36.B.2), Lesson 9.1-9.2: Worksheet 2

(36.B.3), and Answers to Lesson 9.1-9.2: Worksheet 2 (36.B.4).

CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION

As a class the students will read and discuss LOC Manual: Lesson 9.2 and EBAE XIV.45.a. This section covers the exceptions to the general rules concerning the contractions for

know, ought, one, some, and part.

Take turns as a class to read the braille (embossed) answers to Drill 26 from the Drill book.

This will help the students to get a visual idea of reading the embossed copy.

Next the students will braille Drill 26 on Page 9-3 using Perky Duck.

When the students have completed this activity, which includes proofreading their own work, they can exchange drills and proofread each other’s work using the “How to Successfully Proofread” steps.

The students will be given the handout Lesson 9.1-9.2: Worksheet 1 (36.B.1) which is an inquiry to the knowledge of the students prior to studying Lesson 9 in class. This is a quiz to see if the students have read the lesson prior to the class. The worksheet is a list of all of the initial-letter contractions and short-form words the student has learned in Lesson 9. The students will highlight or circle the correct word to the initial-letter

contraction.

The students will be given the handout Lesson 9.1-9.2: Worksheet 2 (36.B.3). The worksheet is 12 complete sentences in simulated braille. This worksheet will help the students to practice their knowledge of reading simulated braille words. Each student will

PROFITT Curriculum Module # 36 — Initial-Letter Contractions

Braille Module 36-6

be paired up with another student to practice reading braille out loud. There is an answer

key to the worksheet.

C. Review and Test (1 hour)

ObjectiveBS36.3: Review and test on the initial-letter contractions.

PREINSTRUCTIONAL ACTIVITIES

The instructor will be familiar with Lesson 9.1-9.2.

You will need the following handouts: Lesson 9.1-9.2: Test (36.C.1) and Answers to

Lesson 9.1-9.2: Test (36.C.2).

CONTENT PRESENTATION AND LEARNER PARTICIPATION

Review Lesson 9.1-9.2 of the LOC Manual. The review is designed to prepare the

students for the test. The instructor is to go over each section with emphases on areas

that will be on the test. Allow the students to ask any questions pertaining to the context

of LOC Manual: Lesson 9.1-9.2.

Pass out the Lesson 9.1-9.2: Test (36.C.1) to each student. This test is56 words for

the students to structure using the contractions they learned in the section. An answer key

is included.

The expected outcome of the test will help both the instructor and the students to

understand the students’ strengths and weaknesses. This will allow them to work together

to strengthen the students weaknesses in any area.

ASSESSMENT

This test is necessary for the students and the instructor to determine the knowledge acquired over Lesson: 9.1-9.2 of the Instruction Manual for Braille Transcribing Fifth Edition, 2009. It is expected that the students will fully grasp the rules for initial-letter contractions and how the original pronunciation must be maintained and when original

pronunciation is lost.
