Science FairBrainstorming Session
Ideas?
● Incorporate hobbies/interests into your research
● What are you curious about?
Science Categories● Biology● Chemistry● Physics● Technology● Earth Science● Computer Science● Psychology● Other● Don’t know
Qualitative vs. Quantitative Data
Qualitative
● Data is categorical● Examples: eye color, softness
of a cat, smell ● Displayed using either a bar
graph or a pie chart
Quantitative
● Data is numerical - uses units that can be broken down
● Examples: temperature, length, height, weight
● Displayed using either a histogram, dot plot, or line graph
Why Quantitative?
● Easier to analyse with statistics● More scientific
Experimental Design
● Title and Hypothesis● Independent Variable (IV)● Dependant Variable (DV)● Trials ● Control● Constants
Past Projects
Title: Clean Energy from Soil based Fuel Cells
“If you use garden soil with varying temperature, water, nutrients and sunlight, then electrical energy (voltage, power) can be generated from the bacteria in soil.”
Past ProjectsTitle: The Effect of Bleach on Different Colors
“Once dry, all samples were laid out with the same lighting and pictures were taken. These pictures were then downloaded onto the computer, where I used a program to measure the color by identifying the amount of red, green, and blue light. Then averages of the measurements were found. I then compared the amount of change between the original color and the bleached area.”
Questions?
Let’s get Brainstorming!!
Creating a Successful Project
Experimentation
● Make sure you are changing the Independent Variable (IV) and measuring the Dependent Variable (DV)
● Multiples levels of the IV● Keep other conditions constant● Repeated Trials
Layout
● Keep fonts consistent and readable
● Poster should be eye-catching but simple
● Text should be LARGE enough ● Include diagrams when you
can
Writing and Language
● Use language that is easy to understand● Define all science terms● Active or Passive Voice?
● Passive: The hypothesis was tested and the effect was examined
● Active: We tested the hypothesis and examined the effect
