In search of images of the futureBram Goots Lorsque Bram Goots a fini sa formation en arts

plastiques à l’Université du Middlesex avec une spécia-lisation en multimédias, il n’est pas parti à la conquête du marché de l’emploi pour les jeunes artistes de l’audiovisuel. Il a choisi de développer et mener un projet indépendant et pluridimensionnel qui allait le forger en tant que photographe et vidéaste.

Bram et moi, qui ai un doctorat en études des médias et qui m’intéresse à la recherche social pure et dure, sommes les heureux parents d’un projet que nous avons baptisé Agence Future (AF). Notre objectif : tra-vailler sur des images du futur. Afin de traiter ce sujet incroyablement vaste, nous sommes partis en voyage d’exploration la première année du nouveau millénaire et avons parcouru 30 pays sur cinq continents. Nous avons mis 30 mois et interviewé presque 400 person-nes à travers la planète sur leur vision du futur.

AF mêlait les études sur le futur, le journalisme, la photographie et la vidéo dans un projet unique de voyage (dans le temps) et est devenu un voyage vers le futur créatif et expérimental. Nous dispo-sions de deux vélos couchés pour la plupart des déplacements sur la terre ferme. Tout le matériel hi-tech nécessaire pour enregistrer les futurs que nous découvrions se trouvaient donc dans nos sa-coches. Plongés dans le vide du sujet, nous étions à la recherche de perspectives quotidiennes, inat-tendues ou uniques du futur partout dans le monde : allant de capitale à villages isolé, parcourant les vastes étendues, les régions montagneuses, les fo-rêts ou les côtes, de l’Europe à l’Afrique de l’Ouest, du Moyen-Orient à l’Inde, ensuite l’Australie, les Etats-Unis, Cuba et enfin l’Amérique latine.

Bram interprète le concept peu évident de re-cueillir des images du futur tout en dialoguant avec mon approche scientifique. Ces images, créées aujourd’hui, font référence au futur, aux visions qu’ont les personnes lorsqu’elles abordent les différents futurs possibles. Les interviewés du projet AF proviennent de tous les horizons - de Sheik Kiftaro, le Grand Mufti de Syrie, au musicien cubain Eliades Ochoa, des gardiens de nuit au Sénégal, Mali, Ghana, en Inde et au Guatemala à des professeurs d’universités du monde entier –

After Bram Goots finished his BA Fine Arts at Middlesex University with a specialisation in multi-media, he didn’t set out to conquer the job-market for young audio-visual artists but developed and carried out an independent and multi-dimensional project that would be his apprenticeship as a pho-tographer and video-artist.

Bram and I, a PhD in media studies interested in hard core social research, developed the project under the working title Agence Future (AF). Our collaboration focused on images of the future, and has done so ever since. To tackle the overwhelmingly broad subject of the future, we set out on a journey of exploration in the first year of the new millennium and travelled to 30 countries in five continents. We were on the road for thirty months and interviewed almost 400 people across the planet about their views on the future.

AF combined work in the fields of future stud-ies, journalism, photography and video in a single (time-)travelling project. It became a creative and experimental journey into the future. We used two recumbent bicycles for much of the overland travel, carrying the hi-tech equipment needed to record the futures we discovered, in our pannier bags. Immers-ing our lives in our subject, we searched for everyday, unexpected or unique perspectives on the future everywhere in the world: in capitals and remote villages, open landscapes, mountain regions, forests and along coasts, from Europe to West Africa, from the Middle East to India, followed by Australia, the US, Cuba and finishing in Latin America.

Bram interprets the not so obvious idea of collecting images of the future in dialogue with my scientific ap-proach. His images, created today, refer to the future, to the perspectives people take when they talk about different possible futures. In the AF interviews, people from all walks of life -from Sheik Kiftaro, the Grand Mufti of Syria, to the Cuban musician Eliades Ochoa, from night-watchmen in Senegal, Mali, Ghana, India and Guatemala to professors at universities around the world- are asked about personal, local and glo-bal futures. In the final stage of each interview they can suggest a place where the future could already

Nadat Bram Goots zijn BA Schone Kunsten afwerkte aan de Middlesex University met een specialisatie in multimedia, stortte hij zich niet op de jobmarkt voor jonge audiovisuele kunstenaars maar ontwikkelde een onafhankelijk en multi-di-mensioneel project dat zijn leerschool als fotograaf en videokunstenaar zou worden.

Bram en ik, een PhD in communicatiewetenschap geïnteresseerd in hard-core sociaal onderzoek, start-ten het project onder de werktitel Agence Future (AF). Onze samenwerking concentreerde zich op toe-komstbeelden en is dat sindsdien blijven doen. Om het overweldigend breed onderwerp van de toekomst aan te pakken, trokken we in het eerste jaar van het nieuwe millennium op verkenning en reisden naar der-tig landen in vijf continenten. We waren 30 maanden onderweg en interviewden bijna 400 mensen verspreid over de planeet over hun visies op de toekomst.

AF combineerde academisch toekomstonderzoek, journalistiek, fotografie en video in één (tijd-)reis project. Het werd een creatieve en experimentele ontdekkingstocht naar de toekomst. We gebruikten twee ligfietsen voor een groot deel van de route over land en droegen in onze fietstassen het hi-tech mate-riaal nodig om de toekomsten die we ontdekten vast te leggen. We dompelden onze levens onder in ons onderwerp en zochten naar dagdagelijkse, onver-wachte of unieke toekomstperspectieven overal ter wereld: in hoofdsteden en afgelegen dorpen, open landschappen, bergen, bossen en langs kusten, van Europa tot West Afrika, van het Midden Oosten tot India, gevolgd door Australië, de VS, Cuba en Latijns Amerika, eindigend in Chili.

Bram interpreteert zijn niet zo evidente opdracht om toekomstbeelden te verzamelen in dialoog met mijn wetenschappelijke aanpak. Zijn beelden, die vandaag gemaakt worden, verwijzen naar de toekomst, naar de perspectieven die mensen hanteren wanneer ze over verschillende toekomstmogelijkheden praten. Pour décrire ces lieux et ces idées, ainsi que les sujets des innombrables conversations sur le futur, Bram pose son regard sur la multitude d’environ-nements humains et naturels rencontrés au cours du voyage de recherche. Des thèmes tels que les questions environnementales globales, l’architectu-re, l’urbanité et le quotidien ressortent. Lorsqu’on travaille sur le futur, il est possible de laisser libre cours au sujet et oser laisser des questions sans réponse. Le futur constitue un terrain ouvert qui offre des occasions uniques de montrer la diversité et l’éternel tout comme la ressemblance et l’éphé-mère. Alors que le futur n’est pas encore réel, les photos sur les futurs ne sont pas de la fiction et peuvent recréer le présent.

To depict these places and ideas, the topics and themes of countless conversations about the future, Bram looks at the multitude of human and natural environments that he encountered on the research journey. Themes such as global environmental issues, architecture, urbanity and daily life emerge. When studying the future you can leave space and freedom to the subject matter and dare leave questions un-answered. The future is an open terrain that offers unique opportunities for showing diversity and time-lessness as well as similarity and transience. While the future is not real yet, photos about futures are not fiction but can be a re-imagination of today.

In de laatste fase van elk interview kunnen ze een plek sug-gereren waar vandaag al een stukje van de toekomst opgevangen kan worden. Om af te sluiten, stellen ze zich voor hoe de plek waar ze zich nu bevinden, er over nog eens 500 jaar uit zou kunnen zien.

Om deze plekken en ideeën, de onderwerpen en thema’s van ontelbare gesprekken over de toe-komst te verbeelden, bekijkt Bram de veelheid van de menselijke en natuurlijke omgevingen die hij op de veldreis tegenkwam. Thema’s zoals glo-bale milieu kwesties, architectuur, stedelijkheid en het dagelijks leven komen te voorschijn. Als je de toekomst bestudeert, kan je ruimte laten aan het onderwerp en durven vragen onbeantwoord laten. De toekomst is een open terrein dat unieke moge-lijkheden biedt om verscheidenheid en tijdloosheid, maar ook gelijkenis en vergankelijkheid, te laten zien. Terwijl de toekomst nog niet echt is, zijn foto’s over toekomsten geen fictie maar kunnen ze een nieuwe verbeelding zijn van vandaag.

Nous avons enregistré la plupart des interviews sur vidéo, et nous en avons fait un film de 40 minutes pour une exposition qui a eu lieu à la fin de la recherche sur le terrain. Cette exposition, appelée Futurescales, montrait la structure des interviews du projet AF il-lustrée par des photos et des citations. Un deuxième film de 30 minutes, commandé par Muhka_Media, présentait une série d’interviews effectuées à Anvers dans le contexte de ce que nous avions recueilli à l’étranger. Une expérience, toujours dans le cadre du projet AF, a aussi été menée à Prague, à l’Université Charles. Un groupe de futurologues et d’universitai-res s’y étaient réunis pour un séminaire et nous leur avons donné la possibilité de commander des images du futur de Prague qui leur seraient utiles aujourd’hui. En quatre jours, Bram a réalisé les clichés et tous les participants ont reçu des images qui correspondaient à leur commande. Aujourd’hui, nous travaillons sur Bruxelles avec IrisFutures, un projet sur deux ans pour lequel nous interviewons 110 personnes et nous réunissons une nouvelle série d’images photo et vidéo. Bruxelles est le dernier lieu en date d’un travail en cours, où Bram est à la recherche d’images du futur en tant qu’apprenti-voyageur dans le temps.

We recorded the majority of interviews on video, re-sulting in a forty minute film for an exhibition at the end of the field research. This exhibition, titled Fu-turescales, showed the structure of the AF interviews with photographs and quotes. A second, thirty minute film, commissioned by Muhka_Media, presented a col-lection of interviews in Antwerp in the context of the international material. Meanwhile an AF experiment was also held in Prague, at the Charles University. A group of futurists and academics meeting for a seminar there, were offered the opportunity to order images of the future of Prague that would be useful to them today. In four days Bram shot the final series and all participants were offered images to fulfil their orders. Today we have zoomed in on Brussels with IrisFutures, a two year project for which 110 interviews are being held and a new series of images and video material is being put together. Brussels is the latest in a continuing series of locations where Bram is in search of images of the future as an apprentice time-traveller.

We namen de meerderheid van onze interviews op met video, resulterend in een veertig minuten durende film voor een tentoonstelling aan het einde van het veldonderzoek. Deze tentoonstelling, onder de titel Futurescales, toonde de structuur van de AF interviews met foto’s en citaten uit interviews. Een tweede, dertig minuten durende film, op commissie van Muhka_Media, stelde een verzameling interviews in Antwerpen voor binnen de context van het inter-nationale materiaal. Ondertussen werd ook een AF experiment gevoerd in Praag, aan de Charles Univer-siteit. Een groep toekomstonderzoekers en academici die daar bij elkaar kwamen voor een seminarie, kon-den beelden van de toekomst van Praag bestellen, die vandaag nuttig zouden zijn voor hen. Bram fotografeerde de uiteindelijke reeks op vier dagen en alle deelnemers ontvingen beelden met betrek-king tot hun bestellingen. Vandaag zoomen we in op Brussel met IrisFutures, een twee-jaar durend project waarvoor 110 interviews gehouden worden en een nieuwe serie beelden en videomateriaal samengesteld wordt. Brussel is de laatste in een zich voortdurend vernieuwende serie locaties waar Bram als leerling tijdreiziger op zoek is naar toekomstbeelden.
