BEA AGM - Saturday 29 October, 2.00-4.00 Bramley Community Centre, Waterloo Lane

In January we organised a well-attended public meeting with Councillors to discuss the future of Bramley Community Centre on Waterloo Lane. We are pleased to announce that we plan to submit a formal expression of interest to LCC's Executive Board this year to take on a lease for the building. We plan to help keep the community centre open by acting as 'caretakers in residence', working with the community to have a centre that is well used by the people of Bramley. If successful, we would eventually move our office and staff to the centre which will allow us to be more accessible and available to members. We will continue to run activities at Bramley Lawn and in other community venues. The expression of interest is the first step. If approved, we would develop a business plan that supports a future where more people, organisations and groups can benefit from the space and be part of its development. With this in mind we are holding a drop-in event at Bramley Community Centre on Thursday October 13 (12.00-8.00) for you to come and share thoughts on our plans. We welcome your ideas as to how the space might be best used for the benefit of the community. You will be able to look round the building and refreshments will be provided. Protection from ‘cold’ phone calls

Many people receive annoying ‘cold’ phone calls. Older people may feel very pressured by these, which can include ‘silent’ calls which may cause anxiety. These are usually caused by call centres with automatic systems which make more calls than staff can handle. There are a number of things you can do to help reduce the number of cold calls, and to prevent the consequences of calls that you do get. Remember - you don’t have to talk to anyone. You can just hang up, or say ‘I’m not interested thank you’ and hang up. ····························································································

Don’t give your personal details when you answer the phone. Avoid saying your phone number and name when you answer the phone and on your answerphone message. ····························································································

Register with the Telephone Preference Service (TPS) – it's free and it allows you to opt out of any unsolicited telesales calls. You can register your landline and your mobile. It is a legal requirement that companies do not make such calls to numbers registered on the TPS. This includes companies based abroad who call the UK on behalf of UK based companies. Allow 28 days for the registration to become fully effective. Registration with TPS will not stop all unwanted calls. ····························································································

Talk to your phone company about services they offer such as caller display and incoming call blocking. Different companies charge differently for such services. ····························································································

If you are getting ‘silent’ calls, or a company is making marketing calls when you are registered on TPS, you can complain to Ofcom, the Communications Regulator. ····························································································

Read the small print before you opt in to receive any marketing information so that you're only getting information you want and need. If unsure, don't opt in.

Meet the money buddy Drew Dodds, Leeds Money Buddies

Drew Dodds describes being a Money Buddy as “The most rewarding job I’ve ever had.” Drew helps people maximise their income. He can check whether people can claim benefits such as pension credit and council tax benefit; find cheaper tariffs for electricity, gas and water; help with budgeting, and talk to companies people owe money to. His clients often gain the confidence to do these things themselves. Drew takes great satisfaction from helping people, and that they usually leave much better able to control their finances. Drew has been a Money Buddy for about 9 months. He works in a number of venues and has just started a regular Tuesday session at Bramley Lawn. Drew finds it frustrating when people get into financial difficulties through no fault of their own, which can take a while to resolve. Leeds City Council are very helpful, but not all companies are supportive. The one-to-one time Drew spends is particularly important for older people. Many people are very reluctant to discuss money. And if they don’t have a computer they have another barrier which Drew can help overcome. Drew hails from Ayr, (Robert Burns’ country ‘…of honest men and bonny lassies’), and has been in Leeds for about 25 years. He likes walking, cycling and going to concerts and is an active member of the Rotary Club of Headingley. If you’ve got questions about money, Drew says “Just come and talk to me”. Money Buddies are at Bramley Lawn, Tuesdays, 2.00-3.00

I’m a BEA Volunteer Ian McPhail 1. What’s your volunteer role? I volunteered to design the BEA

database, and I now support and develop it as new requirements arise. I also help deliver newsletters, assisted in the past at Singing for the brain and do occasional poetry recitals at Bramley Lawn..

2. How long have you been a volunteer? Since September 2012 3. Why did you get involved? My hours in my paid job at WEA had to be reduced, so I had time on

my hands. As I’ve got older I’ve realised the value in supporting the older generation. It won’t be long before I’ll be there myself!

4. Three words that sum up BEA for you? Concerned, enquiring, compassionate 5. What do you get out of volunteering? A feeling of wellbeing, and networking with my local

community. 6. What else do you like doing? Opera (listening to and going to), cycling, visiting charity shops in

search of bargains, reading poetry 7. Where were you born? St Mary’s Hospital, Armley 8. What’s your favourite film? Any film with Charles Laughton (such as Witness for the

Prosecution) 8. And your favourite book? Too many to mention! The one I’m reading at the moment is a

biography of Mozart’s librettist, Lorenzo da Ponte. 10. Tell us one interesting fact about yourself I have, and have always had, a secret

yearning to be an opera singer! See https://bramleyea.org.uk/join-bea/im-a-bea-volunteer/ for more volunteers’ stories

Woman of Steel! BEA member Betty Cole has been officially recognised as a Woman of Steel! Betty, now 93, was one of thousands of women who worked in Sheffield factories during World War Two. All surviving ‘Women of Steel’ have been honoured with a special medal. Betty was among about 100

survivors who took part, with 2,000 family, friends and public, in a ceremony to unveil a statue in Sheffield.

Chair-based exercise: the movie! Leeds City Council has made a video on chair-based exercise. It helps people with limited mobility to build strength and confidence and eventually go to a more structured class. See the video on bramley elderly Facebook.

Bramley Library latest The Council has been consulting with residents about Bramley Library. Their draft plan is to adapt the building to a 'hub', with library, housing support, IT suite and space for groups. This would mean the library staying where it is. Councillors reassured residents that there would still be as many books. If you would like to see the plan or contribute to the discussion please contact Cllrs Gruen, Ritchie or Heselwood 0113 247 4047

YEP reader panel The YEP is looking for people with a passion for Leeds and not afraid to voice their opinion, to join its new reader panel. You’ll get a chance to help decide campaigns, shape the future of the paper, and visit the newsroom. If you are interested, please email [email protected] saying why you would like to be considered, with name, age, area of the city and a photo.
