Physical Education – Mr. Weber

March was quite the entertaining month for Al-exander School! In early March, our Gr. 7/8 Boys and Girls Basketball team competed in their final tournament of the season. They performed at a high level and we are very proud of our student athletes. Special thanks to Mr. Murray and Mrs. Kolesar for coaching our team. Our basketball team also competed against Staff in a friendly competition that provided many laughs for all those who took part in the event. Congratula-tions everyone on a great season! Next up for Alexander Athlet-ics is the Gr. 7/8 Badminton season. Practices have al-ready started, but games won't begin until we are back from Spring Break. More in-formation will be sent out to students/ parents after the Division Badminton Meeting taking place in early April. Cross Country Running practic-es will also be starting in mid April, as long as the weather cooperates. This is open to any students in grades 4-8 and Mr. Weber and Ms. Denbow will be coaching our students. Stu-dents will be able to sign up following Spring Break. Alexander School Clothing is still available online through the Source for Sports website. The online store will close April 6th at midnight. Please contact the school if you require the links for the Students/ Youth clothing and/ or the Staff/ Adult clothing. All orders will be avail-able for pick up near the beginning of May at Alexander School. During Gr. K-4 physical education classes, stu-dents will continue to participate in some strik-ing, balance, and rhythmic activities. Majority of our time will be focused on gymnastics (static and dynamic balance) and introducing jump rope activities. Our Gr. 5-8 students will also focus on the same skills, but the expectations for their skill development are much higher. Once again, April will be a very entertaining month at Alexander School. Play safe, have fun and be active!

Congratulation to all of the students who attend-ed the Virden Festival of the Arts for recorder this March. It was a wonderful opportunity to receive feedback from another educator which we hope to in-corporate into our learning as the year progress-es. In April the Choir will be participating in Festival and notes will go home after spring break.

Grade 2/3– Mrs. Kolesar

The grade 2/3’s have been busy exploring life cy-cles in science this past month. We currently have mealworms in our classroom and have been watching them grow and change. We even have a beetle already!! We went on our first mini field trip of the year to Virden, where we were able to participate in the Festival of the Arts. All of the students who attend-ed did an excellent job! We were lucky enough to get outside and do some green day activities for St. Patrick’s Day, including snow painting and a scavenger hunt. It is hard to believe that we are already to Spring break, but let’s hope that that means the nicer temperatures are here to stay, after all, March sure seemed to come in like a lion! We hope everyone has a safe and fun spring break!

Grade 1/2-Mrs. Clayton

The 1 / 2 class had a fun filled March. We had so much fun at our penguin party and our St. Pat-rick’s Day party. We loved doing the scavenger hunt for the Lepre-chaun’s gold and painting rainbows in the snow. Thanks to everyone who brought the yummy snacks for our parties! In April, we will be do-ing patterns in math with Miss Hale. We will also being doing a big Space theme with Miss Denbow’s class. Enjoy Spring Break!

Grade 5/6 – Mr. Murray

First, let me welcome our new student teacher to grade 5/6. Katelyn Jardine will be with us until ear-ly May for her last student teaching placement and will be taking over much of the teaching in April. She will be starting a large art project with the entire class to make a Star Quilt where everyone gets a piece to show off who they are. In math, the class is finished with the Cartesian Plane and understand the big concepts we have been practicing. The next thing in math will be decimals and fractions. The students are well into designing their own circuits for our electricity unit in science to demonstrate everything they learned in the unit. We will be finishing out the month with a large ELA writing task where the students write a story using their peers from the class as the characters in different expert roles in a story about a heist. They are all very excited to tell their sto-ries. Our basketball season is over. The grade 7/8s im-pressed me and the other schools we faced great-ly. They developed as players and any single one of them could go on to play in high school. In the final tournament, they played against three differ-ent schools and the two back to back games were difficult but they pushed through.

Grade 3/4 – Ms. Kirkup

In March, the Grade 3/4s have been doing lots of fun things. The class made French books modeled after the book “Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See?” We learned colours and animals to cre-ate our books. The class has also been learning feelings in French and have

worked on asking and answering “Comment ca va?” We have a new student teacher in our class named Miss Panagiotou. Mrs. Kirkup created new Soft Entry Centers and we are enjoying building, reading and sketching to start our day. In Music, our class went to Festival in Virden and played “Country Swing” and “Hot Cross Buns with Two Variations.” The Grade 1-4 had a lot of fun on Green Day and enjoyed the St. Patrick’s Day fun!

Grade 7/8 – Mrs. McKay

The grade 7/8 class has been kept quite busy over the month of March. They have worked hard in class, had extra holidays/snow days, gone to Music Festival, played a fun filled basketball game against the staff and successfully made it through parent teacher interviews. We have recently started a large inte-grated unit on Africa that will increase our understanding on global quality of life and how we as Manitobans can be-come involved in the equalization process. This unit will also include Science outcomes that relate to ecosystems. We will practice research skills, write poetry and complete various art projects as part of our study on Africa as well. Remember that students must complete a book report each month, due on the last school day of the month. (March report is due April 2: first day back to classes
