• Maintenance costs are increasing• Expensive remedial or repair works performed sooner than expected.• (Reinforced) concrete is the most commonly used construction material in severe environmental conditions (e.g. marine environment, cold/hot climates, etc.)• Infrastructures (now) expected to have 100 (150) years service life!
Durability of concrete infrastructure is a major issue because:
• Reliable service life prediction models are needed!

General conclusions:
• Cracking has a marked influence on chloride ingress in concrete
• Self-healing of cracks has potential to slow down chloride ingress in cracks
• Fine-scale numerical modeling provides a step forward in understanding complex phenomena such as chloride ingress and corrosion induced cracking of concrete

Recommendations for future work:
• Test other concrete types and/or loading conditions
• Testing of coupled degradation (e.g. chloride + freeze/thaw)
• Extend the model for non-lab conditions and coupled deterioration
• Model ingress of other species too
