I'm Stanka and I am fourteen, too. I live in Martin-Ľadoveň.

It is about our capital city Bratislava.

Basic facts -Area: 367.6 km2 (141.6 sq. mile)

-Population: 446 819 (31.8.2002)

-Other city´s names: Breslava (Slavonic), Prešporok (old Slovak), Pressburg (old German) and Pozsony (old Hungarian)

Bratislava lies at the southwestern edge of Slovakia only a few minutes drive from Austria and Hungary. On both banks of the River Danube you can see the Carpatian mountains. Bratislava is the largest city in our country. There are about 450.000 people. It´s a very interesting city with some big shops and supermarkets.

Location of Bratislava

The Devin Castle is one of the most archaeological localities in Slovakia. It's a National Cultural Monument. It has got a very advantageous situation, because it stands on the place where Morava and Danube are flowing together. The oldest section of the present castle dates from the 13th century. Its peak is from the 15th-16th century. Napoleon's soldiers destroyed it in 1809. Since 1965 the City Museum is ready to make an archaeological research here.

You can see the Slovak National Theatre its building is very nice although it was constructed in 1886.

It is the place of some famous people – actors or actresses like Andrej Bagar,Ján Borodáč and Oľga Borodáčová-Orzsaghová. It's a place of Slovak national culture.

The public transport of our capital is varied. There are buses, trams, cars, cabs. People and visitors can use them every day, but they must pay for their tickets and use them for more transfers. The validity of basic ticket, which costs 14 Sk, is 10 minutes. There are also 30/45-minutes (18 Sk), 60/90-minutes (22 Sk) and reduced-fare tickets (for children from 6 up to 15 years old and for retired). You can also buy 24-hours, 48-hours and 7-days tickets in ticket machines, trams, trolleys, buses, shops or newsagents.

The University was found in 1919. It is a place where Slovak language was taught for the first time.

Jan Amos Komensky was born in 1592 in a small town in the Czech Republic and he died in 1670 in the capital of the Netherlands. He is an important person not only of our history but also of the Czechs history.
