A n d all o f a sudden th ey had wha t they wan te d.

'Shameless ' The Savage had rushed at her l i k e a madman,

s t r ik ing her violently w i t h his whip.

She had turned to run f r o m h i m i n ter ror, had caught her foot

i n the root s of the bushes and had fallen o n her face in the l on g

grass. 'He nry , Hen ry ' she shouted. Bu t her red-faced friend had

r u n away and hid den behi nd the helicopter.

Th e cr ow d rushed towards the spot whe re the Savage stood,

s t r ik ing at that soft body l y i n g i n the grass.

O h , the flesh, the fle sh 'Thi s ti me it was on the Savage's own

shoulders that the wh ip carne down.

D r a w n by the strange att racti on o f the h or ro r of pain, and

driven on by that desire to act as all others acted, that the i r

condi t ioning had roo te d in them, they began t o imitate his

violent action, striking at one another as the Savage struck at his

o w n flesh or at that shapely, shameless body twis t ing and turning

i n pai n i n the grass at his feet.

K i l l i t , k i l l i t , k i l l i t . . . ' the Savage wen t on shout ing.

Th en suddenly somebody started 'O rgy -p or gy' , and i n a

mom e nt they had all caught up the tune a nd, singin g, had be gun

t o dance. Orgy-p orgy, ro un d and rou nd and rou nd, beating o ne

another i n time to the song. Or gy- po rgy . . .

I t was after mid ni ght wh e n the last o f the hel icop ters t oo k its

f l i g h t . Stupid w i t h soma an d tired ou t f r o m endless uncontrolled

hours o f passion, the Savage lay sleeping in the rough grass. The

sun was already high w h en he woke. He lay for a moment, the n

suddenly remembered everything.

O h , my Go d, my Go d ' He covered his eyes w i t h his hand.

That evening the sky was black w i t h helicop ters mak in g thei r

w a y across the sky to the l ighth ouse i n an endless stream. The

'Savage ' called the first arrivals, as the y stepped do wn f r o m

their machine. 'Mr Savage '

There was no answer.

Th e do or of the lighthouse stood h a l f open . The y pushed it

wide ope n and walk ed in to the low l i g h t inside. Th ro ugh a

doo rway on the other side o f the ro o m the y coul d see the

bot tom o f the stairs that l ed up to the hi gher floors. Just under

the top o f the doorwa y hu ng a pair of fe et .' Mr Savage '

Slowly, very slowly, l i k e two unhurr ied compass needles, the

feet turned towards the right ; north, north-east, east, south-east,

south, south-south-west ; the n paused, and, after a few seconds,

tu rn ed as unhur ri edl y back towards the l e f t . South-south-west,

south, south-east, east . . .
