Writers--from the would-be hopeshyfuls to publishing veterans--likely will benefit from the advice of a best-sell ing author who never wrote a word of non fic tion that didnt sell

Elise Miller Davis au thor of The Answer is God the million-plus seller joint biography of Roy Rogers and Dale Evans will conduct an inshyformal cou rse on nonfict ion wri ti ng beginning Feb 8

Participants enrolling in The Wr iter Isnt Always Right (But The

diLor Is) will learn that as in many cases Mrs Davis best selling book was not planned assuch At the time (1955) she was writ ing dramas in real life for Th e Readers Digest A small newspaper item about the Rogers family and the loss of their young mongoloid daughter caught her eye and whetted her investigashytive appetite

It wasnt long before she realized that her extensive research and many wEeks spent living with the family warranted telling their poignant story in more detail than a magazine-length story wou ld allow

I realized that theirs was one of the greatest stories of our1i me she said The enormity hit me squarely --whatever happened in the hearts of this home could echo in homes all over the world

Mrs Davis a third-generation Texan also is well known for her articles which have appeared in The Readers Digest N ations Business Lutheran Digest and Woman Day

Her article in Woma ns Day Dont Be Afraid to Say I Need You reportedly received the largshyest reader mail response in that magazines history

Based on her theory that the words I need you are the highest accolade one human being can say to another the article brought reshysponses from Thank you--the story was a turning point in my life to congratulatory letters on the writshying quality of the piece

In her writing course here Mrs Davis said she hopes to give particishy

pants a glimpse of the world of the professional writer of nonfiction for popular magazines She will focus on where and how to obtain story ideas handling a query to a pubshylisher following up on publishershywriter communication rewritingshyand anything else I can help the writers with

Con ltary to what many people think wrilingdoes not justcometo an author she said Every writer-shyincluding myself--freezes at the sight of that first blank sheet of paper

Course participants will meet Wednesdays 930-1130 am from Feb 8-March 15 Additional inforshymation on The Writer Isnt Always Right (But The Editor Is) a nd any of the nearly 50 additional courses currently offered may be obtained by calling the Center for Continuing Education Deborah Hays
