Dean Burns spent 20 years in the Na-vy, most of it as a submariner, and re-tired from the Navy as Senior Chief So-nar Technician E-8. Dean was born in Nashville Novem-ber 1933 the third of 5 boys and one sister. He knew from the age of 12 he wanted to be in the Navy so on Decem-ber 1951 he joined the Navy. After his initial training, Dean was assigned to a ship. His first 4 years in the Navy were spent on surface ships. Dean spent time on the landing crew assisting marines as they made landings at differ-ent areas of conflict. After his first 4-year enlistment end-ed Dean reenlisted as a submariner. When Dean’s “sub school” training was completed he was assigned to a sub. He later requested a transfer to become a sonar technician and graduated first in his class in late 1958. Dean was later selected to be an instructor of sonar technicians.

Dean was assigned to his first nuclear sub in 1965, the brand new USS Von Steuben. This assignment required

Dean to spend 120 days every year un-der water. Dean reports that one reason he joined the Navy was to see the world but as a submariner did not see it! He passed by the Rock of Gibraltar at least 8 times in his career but since he was un-der the water, he never saw it. When Dean completed 20 years of service, he and his wife decided it was time to return to west Nashville where they bought a house in Charlotte Park and where their children, 3 girls ages 15, 13, and 9, would have a more stable environment. After retiring from the Navy, Dean got a job with the USPS. He retired after 17 years of service as a supervisor of letter carriers. Dean and his wife bought a condo in Braxton as one of the first residents in 2013 and became an active part of “life at the Braxton.” You would often find Dean sitting in the lobby in conservation with visitors and residents that came by. Dean was also sure to attend all Braxton parties where he was a favorite. Dean said he always wanted a mo-torcycle so after a couple of years here he bought one and you would see him in the parking lot riding his bike. In 2017 Dean and his wife sold their condo at Braxton and moved back to Nashville. There he enjoys life and looks forward to riding his motorcycle and having a lot of fun. When Dean moved to Nashville it was Braxton’s loss and Nashville’s gain. We were all glad to see Dean again dur-ing his recent visit with us at Braxton.

Stories Police Officers Hear

The Light Turned Yellow

The light turned yellow, just in front of him. He did the right thing, stopping at the crosswalk, even though he could have beaten the red light by accelerating through the intersection. The tailgating woman was furious and honked her horn, screaming in frus-tration, as she missed her chance to get through the intersection, dropping her cellphone and makeup. As she was still in mid-rant, she heard a tap on her window and looked up into the face of a very serious police officer. The officer ordered her to exit her car with her hands up.

He took her to the police station where she was searched, fingerprinted, photographed, and placed in a holding cell. After a couple of hours, a police-man approached the cell and opened the door. She was escorted back to the booking desk where the arresting officer was waiting with her personal effects. He said, "I'm very sorry for this mis-take. You see, I pulled up behind your car while you were blowing your horn, flipping off the guy in front of you and cussing a blue streak at him and I no-ticed your 'What Would Jesus Do' bumper sticker, the 'Choose Life' license plate holder, the 'Follow Me to Sunday School' bumper sticker, and the chrome-plated Christian fish emblem on the trunk, so naturally ....... I assumed you had stolen the car."

(I received this story from Tom Boles and couldn't pass it up.)

The Seminar

At 1 A.M., the police officer stopped an old man in questionable con-dition.

"What are you doing out so late, sir?" the police officer asked.

"I'm going to a seminar on the harmful effects of alcohol," the man re-plied.

"Right," the officer said sarcastically. "Who would hold a seminar like that at this hour?"

The man sighed. "My wife."

The “Card Ladies”

If you like to play cards you can find these ladies having fun in the “card room” (Media Room) every Thursday from 1:00 PM til around 3:30. As you can see these afternoons are filled with laughter. Every Christmas the fun continues (as you can see) when they get to-gether for a “Cookie Exchange”. They fill the table with all kinds of great cookies. Come join the fun!
