Brazosport High School

2016 Local Scholarship Book

The local scholarships given through Brazosport High School vary in value, eligibility requirements, and

selection procedures. The information in this book is subject to change depending on the wishes of the

individuals, community groups, or organizations that are awarding the scholarships. Scholarships are awarded

based on the criteria set by the individuals, community groups, or organizations that are awarding the

scholarship. Selection could be based on scholastic performance; intended college major, special talent, or

financial need. It is important that seniors review the requirements of each scholarship. These awards and

scholarships represent a very small percent of the total financial aid available to graduating seniors. Additional

sources of financial aid are:

● Colleges or Technical Schools give scholarships to their own students- Go to your college’s web page or

go to the college’s financial aid office. The largest scholarships come from the colleges. Make sure you

apply for them.

● FAFSA- Free Application for Federal Student Aid- www.fafsa.gov This is for federal need-based

grants. Online applications for the next school year is available each January. Fill it out every January

while you are a college student.

● TAFSA- Texas’ application for Texas Grants. www.collegeforalltexans.com Similar to FAFSA, but it

is for state grant money.

● Grants- money awarded based on specific criteria. Grants don’t have to be paid back, but might have some

requirements that have to be met to receive the aid.

● Student Loans- borrowed money with low interest that has to be paid back after you graduate from college

with small monthly payments spread out over several years.

● Work Study Programs- part time work on or off campus that puts money toward your tuition and fees.

● Scholarships- money awarded to students that doesn’t have to be paid back. Proof of registration at the

college is usually required. Many scholarship contests and offers are advertised online. Do your own

searches. Many scholarships are essay contests and require you to write an essay.

STEPS TO USING THIS SCHOLARSHIP BOOK

1. Go Online to access the 2016 Local Scholarship Book with information about each scholarship and the

requirements, and the 2016 Brazosport H. S. Local Scholarship Application. Go to Brazosport High

School’s page and click on the Counseling Center’s page. You will find the Scholarship Book, and

the Scholarship Application links under Scholarship Information.

2. Read through the descriptions and requirements of each scholarship. Mark the ones for which you meet the

eligibility requirements. Plan to apply to all of them.

3. Make a list of those that require a “Special Application”, look for them on our website, if you don’t see the

ones you need you may pick them up in the Career Center from Ms. Munoz. We have copies of the

applications that you may come pick up.

2

4. Use the Brazosport High School 2016 Local Scholarship Application for all the other scholarships. Go to

the application online. Fill it out once and save it to a flash drive, then, you can print a nice neat

typed copy for each scholarship. Complete our local scholarship application and submit a printed

copy for EACH scholarship you want to apply for. If you want to apply for 6 of them, you have to

turn in 6 applications with the correct title of each scholarship at the top.

5. Make a list of what you will need for each application, essay, transcript, photo, or letters of

recommendation. You need to create a system for keeping it all organized, so that you don’t waste

time going in circles.

6. Your application should be very neat and readable with correct sentences, grammar, punctuation and

vocabulary. Get someone to proof read your applications before you turn them in. Your application is

your first and sometimes your only chance to make a good impression for the scholarship committee.

7. If a photo is requested, make sure to provide a simple picture of yourself- no friends or prom pictures.

Make sure to represent yourself in a positive manner. Ms. Munoz & Ms. Lyster have a camera up here

and can take a photo and print one if you do not have one and need one.

8. Follow directions. Be sure to fill out the application completely and include all the additional parts required

(essays, transcripts, or recommendations). Don’t be disqualified because you didn’t follow directions.

Be truthful and do not exaggerate or falsify any information on the application.

9. Please take the time to thoughtfully answer the essays or additional questions. This is your ONE chance to

let that scholarship committee know how much the scholarship would mean to you, and for you to

stand apart from the rest of the applicants. Many of the committees’ decisions go down to the

information in the essays as the deciding factor. Plan, edit and review your essays. Let someone else

read your essays to proof for errors. English teachers, as well as many others, are usually willing to

help you with your essays.

10. If letters of recommendation are required, make sure to ask teachers, counselors, principals, or community

members for a letter at least one week prior to the date that it is needed. These can make or break your

applications! Please be selective of who you ask to write a letter of recommendation. Provide that

person with a resume or a list of information about yourself. On our website, there is a

“Recommendation Information Form” that is great to fill out and give to the person. Pick someone

who knows you well and can really say good things about you. Make copies or ask the person for

multiple copies to use with other applications. It will save you and others time. If you can get three

good letters of recommendation and make copies of them you should be able to repeatedly use copies

of the letters for several applications. Give the person plenty of advanced notice. It takes a lot of time

to write these letters, so send a thank you note afterwards to show your appreciation to the people who

wrote your recommendations.

11. If a transcript is required, attach a transcript to the applications. Request transcripts from Ms. Buckheit by

signing up on her transcript request binder. Unless specifically stated “official transcript”, most

scholarships will accept a copy of your transcript. Request copies of your transcripts from Ms.

Buckheit at least two days before you need it. If you can, turn in ONE request with the total number

of copies that you need. You will need to wait two days and then pick up the transcripts from Ms.

Buckheit.

3

12. Turn in applications to the Guidance Office, on or before the due date – MARCH 1, 2016 unless the

application has to be mailed to the organization. Some scholarships have an earlier due date, so read

carefully and meet all the deadlines.

If you have any questions please ask your counselor and other guidance office professionals:

A-Gl Mrs. Mack

Go-M Mrs. Kaale

N-Z Ms. Ukeje

Ms. Tunnell, Mrs. Hendrick, Ms. Buckheit, Mrs. Lyster, and Mrs. Munoz are also available to assist you in the

Guidance Office.
