SO LONG, FAREWELL,

AUF WIEDERSEHEN, GOOD BYE

As you know I have been planning to retire in 2016 but have been deliberating about when to go. On January 25th, Debbie will turn 65 and we will both be on Medicare and we feel like that’s a good time to retire. So, on January 31, 2016 I will retire after 29½ years as a Pastor. I will be very sad to leave you. You have been an absolutely wonderful congregation. After 10 years, I still feel like we are on our honeymoon. You have accepted change gracefully. You have spoken the truth in love when you were upset about something. You are quick to laugh. Worship here is sincere and beautiful but also delightfully fun and playful. Thank you for all the love you have shown me and my family over the years. I am not exactly sure what I am going to do in retirement. I already volunteer at the Marshy Point Nature Center in Middle River and lead nature-ecology talks for the Skipjack Martha Lewis in Havre de Grace. The church needs interim Pastors for missionaries overseas who go on home leave and that sounds like fun. I want to spend more time with my 92 year old Mom and my Granddaughter and Grand #2 who is due in November. More than anything, I look forward to a slower paced lifestyle. While working here is extremely pleasurable and joyful, there is a lot of responsibility and that has its own weight. I look forward to passing that on to Pastor Wiener. Again, thank you for being you. You will always be in my prayers.

In Christ, Pastor John Thank you for your strong giving. We were 15th in the total amount of giving out of 192 churches in the Delaware/Maryland synod. Considering our small size that is an achievement that we can be humbly proud of (a church oxymoron). Well done everyone.

HELPING THE ANIMALS

Four times a year we set aside a Sunday to collect old sheets, towels, small blankets, rugs and wet and dry cat food (no dog food) for the animals in the Fallston Animal Rescue Shelter. The shelter is located at Crossroads Station, 2725 Fallston Road, Fallston, MD, 410-557-6161, FallstonRescue@aol.com

On Sunday, September 6 we will be collecting your donations. There will be a box for your old rags, rugs, towels, etc and a plastic shaped container for your donations located in the Narthex.

Up coming dates are , Dec 6, Mar 6,2016 June 5, Sept 4, Dec 4.

DONATION OF GLASSES AND PHONES

EYE GLASSES - There is a box for them on top of the coat rack. The glasses are refurbished and are given to the less fortunate who cannot afford glasses.

CELL PHONES - There is a box for them on top of the coat rack. They go to Men and Women in our Armed Services.

FOOT HEALTH

Be kind to your tootsies- after all you need them for a life-time. Each step involves a complex motion of muscles in the foot. There are 33 joints on the foot that can be affect-ed, and/or injured. The aver-

age foot carries an individual 75,000 miles by age 50. The feet have one tough job, each day they may be required to stand, walk, and run.

Take care of your feet

Wash and dry completely (include between toes)

Moisturize

Exercise (stretching/curling toes/rotating ankles)

Massage

Raise your legs when sitting

Pedicure (make sure nails are cut

straight/do not cut cuticles)

Wear smart shoes.

The shoes that we wear can and will impact the overall health of your feet. Studies show that half of the population wears the wrong size shoe. It is important to have your feet sized regularly as an adult because your feet continue to change size. The time of day can impact your foot size; people who stand and walk on the job will generally need a larger size when shopping in the evening. Functional, activity appropriate foot wear is imper-ative for continued foot health.

Summer causes a unique set of prob-lems for our feet; as we walk bare-foot and wear shoes that are less protective. In the summer pay spe-cial attention to sunburn, athletes foot, planter warts, ringworm and

other infections. If your shoes are wet change them; do not continue to wear wet shoes. During the winter wear proper-ly fitting waterproof shoes with warm dry socks.

If your feet hurt and you have any of the following, get help by going to a podiatrist.

Swelling

Recurring pain

Redness

Limited or painful motion

Rash or new growths

Cramping

Change in color or temperature

Pain or fatigue

Decreased or abnormal sensation in toes

MY STEWARDSHIP TRIP STARTING AT ZERO

I was raised by parents who were always active in their church even though they had 4 kids and no wash-er, drier, or dishwasher until the third one arrived. Time never seemed to be an issue. Sundays were al-ways a day of rest when we went to church and almost always spent the afternoons visiting grandparents listening to the adults talking for hours. (boring) But people never talked about stewardship or anything to do with money. I got married and had children, we always went to church and participated in activities, but I never thought of stewardship as loving God or using what God gave me to help other people. I viewed my offer-ing as the price of admission when I went to church and of course I didn't have to pay anything on the Sun-days when we didn't go to church. I viewed people who gave stewardship talks as being very different from me. The early years were financially challenging what with starting a family and buying our first house. Half of my pay some months went to the mortgage and we sometimes had to decide which bills to pay with the other half. Our greatest financial pleasures came from buying stuff – furniture, toys for the kids, and other things that caught our fancy like the antique spinning wheel and chair, and the antique ceramic jug. Meanwhile I was hearing some really good sermons from Pr. Allen about the importance of going to church every Sunday and the importance of stewardship and why we should be good stewards. After a few years things got a little easier and we were able to spend money to do things like beach, camp-ing, and site seeing trips. As I look back on those times I realize we were enjoying making those memories much more than buying stuff. We also started making the money we gave to the church part of our budg-et, and we gave our weekly commitment even if we didn't go to church. And we were getting even more involved in committees and the church council. As time passed, the kids got through college and left home and our involvement in the church continued to grow and our stewardship continued to grow every year and we started to think about what it meant to tithe, and I think we might be there. It is not just what you give to the church, it is everything we do and give to help other people. We current-ly give to over 32 charities every year and it gives us a great deal of pleasure and some degree of guilt, be-cause there are so many desperate people and charitable organizations in need out there, and we could and should do much more. So maybe stewardship is a never ending opportunity for growth. We are still using money to create memories, but we are much more focused on stewardship - (using what God has given us to “Reach out and share God's love”) And as for buying stuff, we are now spending a lot of our time trying to get rid of stuff. We couldn't sell the antique spinning wheel, chair, and jug we hauled around for 50 years in a yard sale, so it ended up in the a land fill. What were we thinking? I recently read that using money to buy stuff creates the least amount of pleasure. Using money to create memorable experiences creates much more pleasure, And using money to help others, whether it is through the church or a charity, creates the most pleasure. When I read this, it absolutely hit home, and that is why I wrote this article. Anonymous HCLC member

HOLY STITCHERS and those who like to knit and crochet are invited to join this group that meets on Mondays twice a month. They gather to make quilts for a variety of recipi-ents. Some of the group stays into the afternoon to practice knitting and crocheting. Experience not required! Since be-ginning this group in September of ‘09, they have made 54 quilts for various organizations. Call Debbie Burk (410-574-4758) or Susan Hood (410-877-0574) with any questions.
