About Sassy, Our Mascot

Sassy, our pet wallaby, was a beloved member of our family. She was born at Dave’s Animal Farm in April 1999. She was taken from her mother’s pouch and placed in an old-fashioned clothespin bag which her surrogate

mother wore around her neck. This “pouch” and a child’s playpen were her home for her first year.

When she outgrew the playpen, Sassy enjoyed grazing in our one-acre walled back yard in Phoenix, often hopping up to the back door to beg for treats. Her favorite foods were Cheetos® and corn on the cob.

Affectionate but independent, Sassy had one and only one “mom,” and everybody understood who that was. An avid RVer, Sassy traveled more than 19,000 miles from coast to coast. On one trip, she left our motorhome for an independent hop around the neighborhood. By the time we found her, Sassy had inspired at least one eyewitness to give up drinking – he could have sworn he saw a “kangaroo”! Sassy met her untimely death in November 2006 to a coyote attack. But she will always be in our hearts, and Sassy’s Outback Café, is dedicated to her in loving memory.
