Looking back at the activities that we have engaged in and projects that LEA has worked on during the first quarter of 2016/2017, it reminds me just how dynamic we are as an organisation.

Despite the busy agenda in the business fraternity, we have remained true to our core Value Proposition, “Empowering the entrepreneur to start and grow their business”. As you peruse through this newsletter, the one thing that I hope will strike you is the sheer range and diversity of work that LEA engages in.

LEA continues to focus on its strategic objectives and works to provide quality business advisory services to various enterprises across Botswana. The interventions LEA provides to entrepreneurs would not be possible were it not for all the stakeholders that we work with. During the month of April 2016, LEA hosted the SMME Pitso and Seminar that brought together the SMME sector development institutions, local SMMEs across all sectors, the private sector, Government departments, Parastatals and the public at large; to deliberate on issues concerning the SMME development sector in Botswana. The platform availed an opportunity for SMMEs to share their success as well as challenges they face in running their businesses.

We continually strive to make positive contributions in the lives of Batswana. LEA renders services that integrate sustainability into the very heart of each enterprise, where our efforts create value for our clients and the business community.

The month of May 2016 marked yet another celebration of the success of two Palapye based Local Enterprise Authority (LEA) clients trading as Isabel Guest Suites & Tours and Lifestyle Architects. The LEA hosted a graduation ceremony to celebrate the successful completion of the capacity development plans designed for clients to advance their businesses into competitive and sustainable enterprises. The clients have proven that they can successfully run the business on their own through a series of interventions received from the Authority.

In the spirit of staff wellness, we continue our commitment to inspire happier, healthier lives through engaging our LEA Stars in various sporting activities. LEA engaged

in the annual All Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) games, on the 4th of June 2016, where they were competing with other MITI Parastatals. The LEA team through its commitment, team effort and winning spirit, became the overall winner.

In conclusion, we are proud of the businesses we have assisted from when they started to where they have grown. We continue to support and hand hold these businesses with the guidance of the LEA dedicated workforce throughout our branch network. We are committed to building on their successes, by integrating sustainabil ity into their business.

Thank you for your keen interest in the Authority, we welcome your feedback.

The Local Enterprise Authority (LEA) hosted the sixth annual Botswana SMME Pitso and Seminar at Fairgrounds Holdings in Gaborone, on the 21st of April, 2016.

In its quest to promote and facilitate entrepreneurship and SMME development in the Southern Region, the LEA Kanye Branch organized a workshop on property development on the 12th May 2016.

This was triggered by the fact that most people have been allocated commercial as well as business plots and they are failing to develop them. The hindrance has been identified as limited knowledge on property development as well as property markets. The workshop was held at the Branch premises.

The Kanye Branch saw it befitting to create a platform where clients and stakeholders could converge to deliberate on pertinent issues pertaining to property development in the Southern District. Some of the stakeholders who attended the workshop included CEDA, Stocker Fleetwood-Bird, Council Physical Planning Department, Wise-touch Botswana (Moladi Building Technology) and the Botswana Building Society.

The objectives of the workshop were to:• expose clients to information, knowledge and ideas on the Property Industry. • diversify the regional economy away from high reliance on Dry-land Farming.

• stimulate interest in the industry and motivate the businesses to explore opportunities within the Real Estate Industry. Among the invited audience were clients holding commercial plots for various uses such as Shopping Complex, Office Space, General Dealers, Guesthouses and Multi -Residential.

During the deliberations, SMMEs were enlightened on the following:-• Market feasibility study on property industry in Botswana• Property Leasing (Pre-lease Contract)• Property Development• Property Management• Available property markets identified in the Southern District• Financing Requirements

The winter season, in her adolescence, saw the Local Enterprise Authority stars shine bright on one eventful Saturday, as they emerged winners during the Ministry of Investment, Trade and Industry (MITI) Parastatal games. The first Saturday of June had acquainted itself with an unforgiving cold, hell-bent on separating the Olympians from the spectators.

The annual spectacles of games were hosted by the Copyright Society of Botswana (COSBOTS) at the Bank of Botswana grounds in Block 5, Gaborone and pitted the usually corporate looking men and women to compete against each other. Amongst the list of parastatals who competed were the defending champions, Citizen Entrepreneurial Development Agency (CEDA), who were undoubtedly looking to retain their title as the Overall Best Organization but in order to do this were to fend off teams from LEA, Botswana Bureau of Standards (BOBS), Competition Authority (CA), Botswana Development Corporation (BDC), Botswana Investment and Trade Centre (BITC) as well as hosts, COSBOTS.

With three sporting knockout codes to be contested in volleyball, netball and football, coupled with the athletic competitions that comprised of the 100M and 200M sprints,100M 4 by 1 relay sprints, the CEOs’ race and the tug of war, LEA coaches and teams had their work cut out for them. The sporting codes were not the only

consideration on the judging criteria that LEA team(s) had to be vigilant against. Judges were also very particular on the branding of the Parastatals stalls, having the Best Branded Stall as another award that was up for grabs.

The organization that acquired the highest collective points would be legible for the most prestigious award of the competition being the Overall Best Organization. This totalled the number of trophies to be won to seven: Overall Best Organization, Best Branded Stall, Best in Athletics, Best in Tug of War, Best in Volleyball, Best in Netball and Best in Football, with teams occupying either position one, two or three under each judging criteria.

The LEA football team showed relentless determination in winning the football trophy, having beaten rivals BDC 5-1 in their first match, but succumbed to fatigue in the second match, inadvertently losing to COSBOTS 4-1, which saw them being eliminated from the title race. The netball team also failed to win the Best in Netball title when they finished third after a loss to CEDA.

The evening was filled with jubilation as LEA was crowned the Best Overall Organization after scooping first places in both athletics and tug of war competitions.
