Used Car Sales Climb as Americans Hold Onto Older Vehicles Used-car sales are continuing to climb this year, bolstered by a five-year

high for new-car sales in 2012 and an aging vehicle fleet that echoes the

tightened spending and uncertain job market faced by most Americans.

About 40.5 million used vehicles changed hands last year, a 4.4

percent increase from 2011, according to analyst firm CNW Research, which

estimates private, retail, fleet and commercial sales of used light-duty vehicles.

By the fourth week of January, sales of used car were up 4 percent year-over-

year, at about 2.3 million vehicles total. According to AAA, the average age of

all cars currently on U.S. roads is 11, up from about 9.4 years in 2009 and 8.4

years in 1995. Article compiled from autos.msn.com

Walk Off 5 Times More Belly Fat Pop quiz: Two women go walking. One finishes quickly; the other takes her

time. They each burn about 400 calories. So who sheds more belly fat?

Conventional answer: It's a tie. But a surprising new study shows that the one

speed walking actually loses more.

Researchers from the University of Virginia found that women who did three

shorter, fast-paced walks a week (plus two longer, moderate-paced ones) lost

5 times more belly fat than those who simply strolled at a moderate speed 5

days a week, even though both groups burned exactly the same number of

calories (400) per workout. Those speed walking also dropped more than 2

inches from their waistlines, pared about 3 times more fat from their thighs,

shed 4 times more total body fat, and lost almost 8 pounds over 16 weeks—all

without dieting!

The improvements didn't stop there. The high-intensity exercisers lost about 3

times more visceral fat—the dangerous belly fat that wraps around organs

such as the liver and kidneys and has been linked to diabetes, heart disease,

and high blood pressure. Vigorous exercise releases fat-burning hormones and

also increases after-burn (the number of calories your body uses post-exercise

as it recovers) by about 47% .

The Funny Bone Teaching is tough … Mr. Davis is working with Johnny

on his math.

Mr Davis: If I gave you 2 cats and

another 2 cats and another 2, how

many will you have?

Johnny: Seven, sir.

Mr Davis: No, listen carefully… if

I gave you 2 cats and another 2 cats

and another 2, how many will you

have?

Johnny: Seven, sir.

Mr Davis: Let me put it to you

differently. If I gave you 2 apples,

and another 2 apples, and another

2, how many would you have?

Johnny: Six, sir.

Mr Davis: Good. Now if I gave you

2 cats, and another 2 cats and

another 2, how many would you

have?

Johnny: Seven!! SIR!

Mr Davis (angry): Where are you

getting seven from?!?!?!

Johnny: Because I’ve already got a

darn cat!!!

Healthier Corn Dogs

6 veggie or turkey dogs

1 ½ cups yellow cornmeal

½ cup flour

1 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon baking powder

Preheat the oven to 425°F and lightly oil a 9 x 7 baking pan.

In mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, flour, salt, baking powder, and soda and

stir to blend. In another bowl whisk together the egg, milk, and oil; add to

dry ingredients, stirring until just moistened. Pour batter into baking pan.

Place hot dogs side by side in the corn bread batter. Allow enough space in

between for cutting. Gently push hot dogs down into the batter. Batter will

rise and cover hot dogs completely. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until

golden brown. Let cool 5 minutes, and then cut into rectangular blocks.

Serve with ketchup and mustard.

Dr. Seuss Was a Bit of a Gambler… The Cat in the Hat was pretty simple, Dr. Seuss created all of its magic

using only 225 words. Bennett Cerf, his editor, bet him that he couldn't

write a book using 50 words or less. Not one to back down from a

challenge, Mr. Geisel (AKA Dr. Seuss) started writing and came up

with Green Eggs and Ham which uses exactly 50 words. The 50 words

are: a, am, and, anywhere, are, be, boat, box, car, could, dark, do, eat, eggs,

fox, goat, good, green, ham, here, house, I, if, in, let, like, may, me, mouse,

Steal Back the Hour We Lose With Daylight Savings

STOP THE SCAVENGER HUNTS - Save yourself the time and stress by

cleaning out your wallet, purse, pockets, or wherever you stash those

small, essential items on a regular basis. Make a habit of dropping off

your keys and phone in the same spot every time you enter the house.

SCREEN YOUR CALLS - Caller ID was invented for a reason. So if you

don't have time to talk, don't -- and don't feel guilty about it.

MAKE YOUR ERRANDS EFFICIENT - Plan to pick up your

prescription between meetings, or grab essential items on your

way to work. That way, you won't be tempted to wander

around the store browsing, saving you both time and money.

USE SHORTCUTS - We're not just talking about your drive time. It also

applies to your Web-browsing time. Bookmark websites you frequently

visit, and create shortcuts on your desktop for applications or folders you

open regularly.

Cut Your Food Budget in Half Limit alcohol. Sigh. But maybe it will be more fun to only have a drink

when you’re going out. It can make a night out like a special occasion!

Quit buying ready-made solutions. If you use a lot of something, try to

figure out how you can make it yourself in volume. For example, it's

cheaper to buy bulk steel-cut oats and cook a pot of it for the week than to

buy instant oats.

Plan menus two weeks out before grocery shopping. Carve out time in

your schedule (about 30 minutes) to plan your breakfasts, lunches, dinners

and snacks for the next 10 to 14 days. Consider keeping a folder of recipes

you want to try. Remember to check on toothpaste and other sundries!

Grocery-shop three times a month, and stick to your list. Pit can seem

impractical if you eat lots of fresh fruits and vegetables But if you bring

them home, prep them immediately and keep them in airtight containers,

most stuff easily lasts 10 days.

Designate a "meal prep" day. Every 10 days or so, spend three to four

hours cooking big batches of stuff -- rice and beans, morning gruel, root

vegetables, a casserole to freeze, etc.

Keep a list of what's in the freezer. You might totally forget you have it!

Keep a list on the fridge that you update every 10 to 14 days.

Keep comfort food ready to go. Keep fixings on hand for things that

sound better than takeout, like a grilled cheese sandwich or Mac &

Cheese!

happened.” ~ Dr. Seuss

March  Client  of  the  Month:  Lucille  Cairns

Lucille  Carins  has  led  an  interesting  life.    In  the  past,  she’s  done  modeling  and  was  accepted  into  the  Julliard  music  program  for  her  vocal  and  piano  talent.    Unfortunately,  a  bout  with  polio  the  summer  after  graduating  from  high  school  prevented  her  from  attending.

“I  am  a  people  person,”  Lucille  said.    “My  mother  always  told  me  I  was  born  with  the  Salvation  Army  bell  in  my  hand.”

Lucille  is  most  passionate  about  her  family.    She  raised  four  children  and  now  is  blessed  with  seven  grandchildren  who  call  her  “Lulu”.

“My  children  have  done  quite  well,”  Lucille  said  proudly.

Lucille  has  lived  twelve  happy  years  here  in  Venice.

“I  was  reluctant  to  come  here  initially  because  I  love  Chicago,”  Lucille  admitted.    “My  husband  retired  early  and  we  started  out  having  two  homes,  one  in  Chicago  and  one  in  Venice.  Now  we  reside  in  Venice  permanently.”

“Venice  has  it’s  own  charm,”  said  Lucille.    “I  love  our  particular  housing  development,  Sawgrass.    At  the  time  we  moved  there  it  was  just  getting  developed.”

Lucille  enjoys  filling  her  days  with  volunteering  in  the  community  (she  has  been  known  to  play  the  piano  in  nursing  homes),  playing  tennis,  shopping,  going  to  the  beach,  spending  time  with  her  grandchildren  who  visit  every  winter,  and  traveling  with  her  husband.

“We  travel  a  lot  and  we  love  to  cruise,”  Lucille  said.    “For  our  50th  wedding  anniversary,  we  took  our  entire  family  on  a  two  week  trip  to  Scotland.”

Lucille  has  been  a  loyal  customer  of  1  Stop  Car  and  Truck  Repair  since  purchasing  an  emerald  green  Mazda  Miata  in  2001.

“1  Stop  kept  my  Miata  in  tip-‐top  condition,”  said  Lucille.  “Everyone  wanted  to  buy  my  car.    It  was  in  great  shape,  thanks  to  1  Stop.”

Lucille  was  involved  in  a  car  accident,  which  totaled  her  beloved  Miata.    Thankfully  she  was  unharmed.    She  replaced  her  Miata  with  a  Pontiac  G6  convertible.

“To  give  you  an  idea  of  how  much  I  trust  1  Stop,  when  my  Pontiac  was  leaking  transmission  fluid,  I  brought  it  in  to  1  Stop,  not  the  GM  dealership,”  Lucille  explained.    “The  dealership  would’ve  done  the  work  for  free  under  warranty,  but  I  trust  my  cars  to  1  Stop  so  I  paid  for  them  to  fix  this  issue.”

Lucille  continually  refers  customers  to  1  Stop  Car  and  Truck  repair.

“A  good  mechanic  and  a  good  doctor  is  always  hard  to  find,”  said  Lucille.    “I’ve  found  my  good  mechanic!”

“1  Stop  is  great,”  raves  Lucille.    “They’re  personable,  they’re  always  smiling  and  they’re  definitely  customer-‐friendly,  which  means  a  lot.    They’ve  taken  the  time  to  get  to  know  me.”
