These four components are the fundamental, non-negotiable, building blocks to determine howhigh your performance ceiling is. 3P’sofLeadershipPerformanceAkeyphase,inBreakingTheCEOCode,thatwillmakeanimmediateimpactonyouasaleaderandperson,isPhase2–PERFORMANCE.Let’sexpandthe3P’sofBreakingTheCEOCode.

Periodization originally comes from the process or study of categorizing the past into discrete,quantifiednamedblocksoftime.Insportitisprocessofdividinganathletesannualtrainingplanintoa series of manageable phases or cycles of stress and overload with a period of recovery. CEOPeriodizationisaboutplanningyourfutureenergyandperformancestate.Theexcitingthing isthatmany of the fundamentals of athlete periodization can easily apply to you as a CEOor leader andanythingyoudoinlife.Itisimpossibletoholdhighlevelsofenergyandperformancecontinuouslyoveralongperiodoftime.Energyandperformancewillriseandfalldependingonthelevelsofstressandrestappliedtoyourlife.We call this, PerformanceOscillation.Whenpeople thinkof highperformance, the first imagethatcomestomindisusuallyatopathlete.Atopathletewillgenerallyapplyastressloadwithrestata rate of three to one. Their performance plan is based on rest and recovery, with training loadsapplied to stimulate a stress response that leads to an overall increase in performance over time.Whentheydoitwell,theyareabletoincreasetheiroverallperformanceoverayear,evenwiththeirperformanceoscillating.Ingeneral,weseea lotofCEO’sandpeople in important leadershiproles (GENERAL),continuouslyapply stress over a long period of time, without planning appropriate levels of rest and recovery.Athletes have a strong trigger when they get recovery wrong as they aren’t able to achieved thetimes,numbersorfeelingduringtrainingoratanevent.Itisdifferentintheworkingworld,formanypeople, as unless there is a catastrophic event the decline in your energy and performance is sogradual, that thebodynaturallyadjustsandyoudon't recognize it.Overayear thepersonsenergyand performance continue to drop as they continue towork hard,miss sleep, work an extra day,exerciselessandtakeonmoreworkandwaituntiltheirannualthreetofourweekholidaytoworryaboutrest.Theywonderwhytheyalwaysgetsickwhentheyhaveaholiday!

CEOPeriodizationisallaboutplanningandschedulingrestandrecoveryonadaily,weekly,monthlyyearlyandevenawholecareerbasis.TherearefivelevelsofCEOPeriodization,whicharerelevanttotheperiodoftimeyouareplanningyourworkloadandrecovery:

1. GIGANTO (Career) – How are you going tomanage your energy and performance over acareer?Youcan’tgofullthrottlefor11-12monthseveryyearwithoutexpectingtogetsick,fatigued and “crash and burn”, so to speak. The best example I have seen of effectivelyperiodizinga career, is formerTriathlonAustraliaCEO,AnneGripper,who takesa role forfiveyearsandthenhasafullyearoff.InheroffyearsshehasstudiedaMasters,createdacharitablefoundationandcycledtheworld.

2. MACRO(Year)–TheMACROlevelcanbelookedatintwocomplimentaryways.First,ratherthanworking11-12monthsstraightduringtheyearandhavingfourweeksoff,howcanyouscheduleinaweekorafewdaysoffeverythreetofourmonths?Secondly,howcanyouplanyour year so that you have a period of weeks where you have increasedmeetings, workhard,maytravel lotsandfocusonakeyprojectorprojects;andthenfollowitwithonetothreeweeksofreducedworkloadandstress.

3. MICRO(Month)–ThenyoucanbreakitdownfurthertoaMICRO(month)perspective,and

breakthethreemonthblocksintofourweekblockswhereyouhavethreeweekswhichcanbemoreintense,mayhavehigherlevelsofstress,youmaybetravelingregularly,havemajorprojectsandthenoneweek,whereyouschedulenoprojects,lessmeetings,havenotravel,reducethehoursyouworkandspendtimewiththosewhoaremostimportanttoyou.

4. MESO(Week)–Howdoyouplanyourweeksothatyoucanhavehighlevelsofenergyand

performance throughout the entire week? Especially during peak project times, it isimportanttomakesurethatyouhavemanagedyourenergyduringtheweeksothatyouareinapeakperformancestatecomeeventday.

5. NANO(Day)–Manypeopleworkcontinuouslythroughoutthedayforlongperiodsoftime

withoutabreak.Theyusestimulantssuchascoffee,RedBullandsugartospiketheirenergylevels. There is evidence that we can only effectively concentrate and hold high levels ofproductivityfrom45-90minutesatonetime.Ifyoutakeabreak,evenforjust1-5minutestostretch,takeawalkorevenmeditatecanresetyourmentalenergyandfocussothatyoucanmaintainproductivityandperformance throughoutanentireday.The foodyoueatduringtheday,theamountofsleepyouhaveandschedulinginexercisecaneitherhaveapositiveornegativeeffectonyouroverallperformance.

You just can’t rely on exercising regularly, eatingwell, freeing yourmindandrecoverywithpurpose,youalsoneedtotreateveryinteractionasaperformance.According to AlbertMehrabian, in his book SilentMessages, 93% of communication is non-verbal.Albert assigned7% toourwords, 55% toour body language, and38% to the tone&music of ourvoice.Ifyournon-verbal’s;suchasface,eyes,voice,bodyandbreathingaren’tcongruentwithwhatyouaresayingthenyourmessagecouldeasilybemisunderstoodormisinterpreted.Withthisinmind,howmuchtimedoyouspendpreparingforaninteractionwithapersonorgroupofpeople,inregardstothecontent,desiredoutcome,moodyouwanttosetandthewayyouneedto present to achieve the result you are aiming for?
