Breaking Words ApartSegmenting is the ability to hear the individual sounds in words.

Think of segmenting as the opposite of blending. When we speak, we blend sounds together very quickly to form words. In segmenting, we take the individual sounds apart and say each one separately. For example, there are three separate sounds in the word ham: /h/–/ă/–/m/. In this activity, your child will learn how to hear the sounds in short words so that later he will be able to represent each sound with a written phonogram.

Breaking Words ApartPrepare the Activity

1. Print and cut out the segmenting cards on pages 4-5 and 9-10 (color) or pages 6-7 and 11-12 (black and white).

2. Place the cards in two stacks. One stack will have cards with two colored circles (representing two sounds) and the other stack will have cards with three colored circles (representing three sounds).

Instructions: Segmenting Words with Two Sounds

1. Place the segmenting cards with two sounds in front of your child. Use the tie card to demonstrate the activity.

“This is a tie. Say tie.” Tie.

“Watch as I break up the word tie.” Working from left to right, touch a circle for each sound as you say it: “/t/–/ī/. Tie.”

2. Have your child repeat the exercise with the remaining cards. Name each item so your student doesn’t have to guess what it is.

3. Use the answer key on page 8 as needed.

Instructions: Segmenting Words with Three Sounds

1. Place the segmenting cards with three sounds in front of your child. Use the pig card to demonstrate the activity.

“This is a pig. Say pig.” Pig.

“Watch as I break up the word pig.” Working from left to right, touch a circle for each sound as you say it: “/p/–/ĭ/–/g/. Pig.”

2. Have your child repeat the exercise with the remaining cards. Name each item so your student doesn’t have to guess what it is.

3. Use the answer key on page 13 as needed.

Note: Throughout this activity, your child will be segmenting the words orally; he will not be writing the words.
