DESCRIPTION

4 billion people live with less than $8 per day, and this is why innovation is important there, as it helps to empower people who can in turn be entrepreneurs and create growth in their markets. In this review, you will find case studies and examples of breakthrough and innovative technologies, from crazy projects and ideas to already operational and used solutions in Nigeria, India, Kenya, Argentina, Dominican Republic, Chile, Thailand, Singapore, France... Most of these projects are inclusive businesses, meaning: - People at the base of the pyramid are taken into account as consumers. The products are designed for them. Giving the poor an access to affordable products and services will increase their quality of life and productivity. - People are also taken into account from a supply chain and production perspective: they become designers, producers and distributors. Training allow new skills to spread into communities, giving them more autonomy, income, and a chance to break out of the cycle of poverty. I had the opportunity to meet some of these project holders during the Ashoka Globalizer 2014 in India and my work. I will update these slides as I explore more of these tech opportunities which are low-cost, low-tech, and empowering. Let me know if you see or know about similar ideas, projects and initiatives, I'd be happy to know more about it! Anne-Laure Herrezuelo

3D printers are both cheap and empowering communities to (re)build a lot of things, locally.

W.Afate is the first 3D printer to be built with e-waste in Africa, solving two problems at a time.

Project Daniel empowers war amputees in South Sudan: not only do they get a new pair of 3D printed arms, but they are trained to build more by themselves and to maintain theirs.

This 3D printed trachea helped to save a baby’s life

Comment:

• Today, BOP market often means TOP selling to BOP

• 3D printing = Empowering BOP to be entrepreneurs and makers of mass products

3D PRINTING & EMPOWERMENT OF COMMUNITIES

Open-hardware makes available both products and methodologies to allow anyone to build and create on top of what has been shared.

It’s even more important in emerging countries, where infrastructure is weak and populations always more vulnerable to crisis.

Protei’s DIY boat costs technically nothing and helps monitor environmental sea data (oil spill, radioactivity)

Jerry Can is a DIY server with a low cost of production. With the “product” comes a strong community of empowered makers

Comment:

• Extreme waste management: most is made out of reuse material

• Close to the 3D-printing concept of building an autonomy for BOP populations

OPEN-HARDWARE: CHEAP & COLLABORATIVE
