PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

Dear Chippewa Garden Club Members,

I have chosen “Celebrating the 100th Anniversary of the Cleveland Metroparks” as the theme for 2017. This park system has been a big part of most of our lives.

The theme of our flower show, titled “This Land Is Our Land” to be held July 22-23, is also the 100th anniversary of the Metroparks.

My parents’ home was a short distance from the Rocky River Reservation, what we called “the valley”. It was my playground growing up. My father and I rode horses there and he taught me to drive on Metroparks roads. My family’s hobby was archery, and we all had bows and practiced at a Metroparks range. My father taught me to swim at Huntington Beach (by throwing me into the lake!). My friends and I hiked the woods, and I caught crayfish in the Rocky River. I first played golf at Mastic Woods Golf Course.

I have wonderful memories of the Cleveland Zoo before Cleveland Metroparks took control and made it even better.

In this yearbook, we have featured a part of the Metroparks for each month. Many of these reservations are very familiar to you, and some you have never visited. Take time this year and visit some new areas of this wonderful system.

Respectfully,

Kathy Habib

2017 President

The garden was designed, prepared, and planted by members of Chippewa Garden Club, Inc. and is maintained yearly. Garden tours are given to school children and at historical events. • Library Program: Chippewa Garden Club supports the library system by hosting a gardening-related program for children each year. • Garden Therapy: This program started in 1999. Members provide gardening-related projects and work with seniors at a local nursing home. • Earth Week/Arbor Day: CGC’s Annual Tree Seedling project involves CGC members visiting elementary schools during Earth Week. Each third grader goes through an assembly line and bags their own white pine seedling to take home and plant. (Instructions are provided). They also learn the history of Arbor Day. • Home Days: Chippewa Garden Club has a booth at Brecksville’s Home Days to promote interest in our club, and highlight our civic activities. • Community Gardens: This project helps construct, organize, implement and mentor community gardens within our communities. Currently we are actively supporting both in the Greene Acres Community Garden in Broadview Heights and the Recess Gardening Team at Central School.
