Well Said, Sir Lincoln, Auckland Reactor and Betterthancheddar will have small contingents at the Australasian Classic but many more a day later at the Premier, while the stock of Lucky Chucky, Raging Bull, Imperial Count, Stunin Cullen, Always A Virgin and Superfast Stuart will debut only at the Premier.Well Said has a colt from Impish (6 wins) at Karaka, one of 14 live foals from his first season. There’s a bigger range to choose from in Christchurch where he has seven colts and a filly from the family of Beaudiene Bad Babe.Well Said, a son of Western Hanover, was a huge winner and a very fast horse, taking a record of 1.57.6 at three and earning $2.5 million.Sir Lincoln starts off at Karaka with a filly from the winning Live Or Die mare Gottabeseptember, one of his 83 first season live foals. The offering goes from four there to 11 in Christchurch where there will be interest in the filly and the 15th foal from No Paba, dam of the brilliant Group 1winning racemare Nearea Franco, who won 11. Sir Lincoln, a son of Mach Three, had an impeccable racing career, winning 21 including eight as a 3-year-old and the Auckland Cup when he was older.Chase Auckland, a colt from the winning Falcon Seelster mare Delicata, will open the batting for Auckland Reactor at Karaka as a prelude to a huge innings at the Premier. Five at the Karaka will be followed by 24 later in the week – 19 colts and five fillies. They include a colt from Miss Bubbles (8 wins), a colt from a Live Or Die mare in the family of Lyell Creek, and a half-brother to the Group 1 winning mare, Secret Potion. They come from 156 foals in his first season.

By Mach Three, Auckland Reactor won an incredible 32 races from 53 starts, and more than $1.8 million. A multiple Group winner with an award on every hook, Auckland Reactor won his first 17 starts in succession.Betterthancheddar comes in with only one at Karaka, the colt from the Christian Cullen mare Baptism Of Fire, who is notable as the dam of the huge winner Highview Tommy, 15 wins, $885,062, and now at stud. The numbers are up at the Premier, where five colts and eight fillies from 76 live foals will be offered, with the colt from Bella Arden (5 wins) near the end of the day, meaning the sale should end on a strong note.Betterthancheddar is the fastest and biggest winning son of the all-conquering Bettor’s Delight. At three he won the Cane Pace and the Breeders Crown, and he retired after 19 wins from 33 starts and more than $1.6 million.Lucky Chucky starts and ends his sale with the filly from the Sundon mare Sunny Moment in the family of Take A Moment, Dr Hook and Quite A Moment, and she is the only entry from his first crop of seven foals.Lucky Chucky was a trotter of the highest class, winning 14 of his 23 starts, all at the age of two and three. He won more than $2m and at two and three was the US Trotter of the Year. He is by Windsong’s Legacy, by Conway Hall, from a Muscles Yankee mare.

Raging Bull has two colts being offered, one on the first day and the other on the second, both part of the Cavalla Bloodstock draft that includes the first foal from the outstanding racemare Carabella, 17 wins. They come from his first cop of 29 foals.A son of Christian Cullen from a Sands A Flyin mare, Raging Bull had a short but impressive racing career. He raced only 10 times, won five, earned more than $100,000 and never finished worse than second.Imperial Count is the sire of Success Counts, a colt from a Sundon mare who sells on the second day.He is one of nine first season foals by the son of Angus Hall who won 17 at 2, 3, 4 and 5.Stunin Cullen is another son of Christian Cullen about to make his mark, and with eight colts from 54 first season foals he shouldn’t find it hard – first up is Courage Is Stunin, whose grandam left Terror To Love (30 wins).Stunin Cullen was brilliant when he was young, winning the Great Northern Derby, the 3yo NZ Sires’ Stakes Final and the Elsu Classic; later the Ashburton Flying Stakes and the Northern Southland Cup; all told 16 wins.Sweet Mary is a filly by Always A Virgin, one of six from his first crop.Always A Virgin was a superbly-performed son of Western Ideal who won more than $1.1 million and took a mark of 1.48.8 at three.Superfast Stuart, a son of Kadabra, had 35 foals in his first season and Trouble Lodge is selling two of them.Superfast Stuart won 15 races, for modest earnings and set a track record at the Meadows.

Breeding Matters Page 11

Most Standardbreds destined for the racetrack will endure a short but intense period of yearling prep before entering training as young as 18 months of age, with many racing in their two year old year. Feeding these young horses is a challenge because nutrients must be supplied to cater for both growth and exercise. Additionally, little research has been done to quantify the nutrient requirements of horses this age, particularly during the transition period from untrained yearling to intensely exercised two‐year‐old.Ideally the yearling Standardbred should have been on a sound nutritional program from birth, giving it the best opportunity to develop a strong skeleton, able to withstand the rigors of training. If purchased at a yearling sale, the animal will likely have been on a high plane of nutrition for several months, so it is important to taper off the energy intake if the yearling is going to be turned out for some time before pre‐training. Yearlings fresh from the sales can be maintained on good quality forage (1‐1.5% of body weight) including good pasture, and a feed formulated for breeding and growing horses such as NRM Assett or Evolve. If the yearling is a ‘good‐doer’ then cutting back the grain concentrate and feeding a balancer such as NRM Equine Balancer at 1kg per day is a good approach to keep the kilos down, while still providing essential nutrition.

Feeding Programs for Two‐Year‐Olds

Once the yearling has entered the training environment, a real concern for trainers is how differently to feed rising two‐year‐olds compared with older horses in the stable. A typical feeding program for an adult harness horse in race training consists of good quality forage (grass and/or lucerne hay, chaff, pasture turn out if available), grain/commercial concentrate and supplements if necessary.

Forage must be fed at a minimum of 1% body weight per day – that is a minimum of about 4‐5kg hay per day. The energy and majority of the nutrients are provided by grain and/or a commercial grain concentrate. Commercial concentrate feeds are usually fully fortified to contain all the energy, protein, minerals and vitamins the horse needs provided it is fed at the recommended amount (usually about 4‐8kg per day) and is fed alongside good quality forage. Some commercial racing feeds are formulated so that you can add your own grain (oats/barley/maize) to top up the energy intake. Rising two year olds will require more protein, calcium, phosphorus and trace minerals than mature horses because they are growing as well as working. If we look at an example – An adult Standardbred in race training and his rising two year old stable mate in moderate work. Both horses are fed 5 kg of high quality grass/lucerne mixed hay and a 13.0% protein commercial grain mix that supplies 13 MJ DE/kg (NRM Race13). The adult racehorse would require 6 kg of grain per day to meet its energy requirement, while the two‐year‐old requires 5 kg/day. Figures 1 and 2 show how well these rations meet the nutrient requirements of the two types of horses.

Although the hay and grain are not excessively high in protein or minerals, the adult racehorse’s ration supplies more protein, lysine, calcium, and phosphorus than needed because of the high level of intake required to meet the racehorse’s energy requirement. A ration using the same hay and grain mix also meets the nutrient requirements of the two‐year‐old in moderate work. Again, a fairly high level of intake provides adequate nutrients from feedstuffs containing fairly low concentrations of protein and minerals. The bottom line from this comparison is that most rations fed to adult racehorses contain adequate protein, calcium, and phosphorus for rising two‐year‐olds. If energy intake must be restricted in a rising two‐year‐old (if they’re a ‘good‐doer’ for example) higher levels of fortification may be needed. In these cases topping up the diet with a ration balancer (such as NRM Equine Balancer) would be appropriate. In conclusion, the nutrient requirements of the rising two‐year‐old fall between the growing weanling/yearling and the adult performance horse. If the rising two‐year‐old is in training, feeds that are typically formulated for adult performance horses are appropriate because the elevated level of feed intake required to meet the energy required for exercise will provide the extra protein and minerals needed for growth. In addition to correct nutrition, it is important to note that from the recent research into confinement during training, some level of turnout time is important to maintain bone mineral density in young horses entering the training environment. For more information about feeding the racehorse in training or equine nutrition in general, contact NRM on 021 945 400 or email Kentucky Equine Research at [email protected]. Page 12: Breeding Matters - Yearling Sales Issue 2016

Hello and welcome to our Yearling Sales edition of Breeding Matters for 2016!A big thank you to the vendors and preparers who took the opportunity to advertise. We have worked extremely hard to produce a publication that will not only do your yearling(s) justice, but also give them the all-important pre sales exposure they deserve.A big thank you also to the racing bodies and industry participants that also supported this publication, there are too many of you to name but your pages and advertisements have also made this possible.Lastly, thank you to the team around me. John & Rebecca Mooney who are instrumental in guiding and influencing my writing and the overall direction of the magazine. John, your efforts in the last few months to help me settle in this role are beyond words. My writing team in Duane Ranger, Mike Grainger, Peter Wharton and John. Again, your passion pours onto the pages for us all to enjoy and I’m extremely grateful.Sob stories over. A quick update from myself and what we at the NZSBA are up too.I am hoping that you have seen and opened your email accounts and read our new publication Breeders’ Weekly. Over 1000 emails are opened every week so many times! While we will continue to run our print publication Breeding Matters, we wanted to provide the breeders and our members with a more regular stream of communication and this has been the result. The uptake has been tremendous and we have received numerous letters and emails of encouragement and support. The online publication is putting a spotlight on the smaller breeders who are as much the lifeblood of this sport as the larger commercial ones. As the Weekly has grown in both

readership and size, we are now entering a phase whereby we will ‘chase’ the advertising dollar. If you would like to feature your business or product in a online quality publication read by 2000+ industry participants, don’t hesitate to contact me directly. In two months our Facebook page has grown from 600 followers to over 1000!In recent years the NZSBA has increased the level of recognition given to breeders and their achievements. One thing I have noticed in my short time in the role is just how passionate the breeding community is about what they do. While not everyone will breed a Group One winner, what I have learned is that everyone has a story to share and insights we can all learn from as every breeder seeks the ultimate success. In the coming months you can expect to see a new look website and re-branding from The Breeder as we look to take the next step forward with the organisation. We will also look to bring in new sponsors to further fund some of the many ideas and initiatives we would like to pursue. You can trust that the NZSBA and our affiliates are working hard to bring you more, but talk is cheap and I would much rather let my actions do the talking.Six hundred of you are members of The Breeders. I encourage others to join and support our work for this great sportHope to speak with you or catch you at a race meeting soon..

Brad ReidExecutive ManagerNZSBA

Yearling A lot of blood sweat and tears has gone into making this publication in a short time, to give you, the breeders, preparers and, vendors the best opportunity to promote your yearlings ahead of the sales. Also for prospective purchasers to grab an eyeful of something they like and then follow it up through the catalogue and an inspection. A big thank you to all who supported us and helped in making this publication.

The owner operator of Five Star Yearling Prep has been doing so since 2012 when he had a draft of three yearlings which has now increased to an incredible 23!“I moved to a lifestyle block with my parents when I was about 14 but Dad has always had quite a few shares in horses off and on. “When we moved out to Ohoka, Brent Lilley was training our horses at the time and he was around for dinner one night and said how about you come give us a hand in the holidays?“He ended up dragging me round there and showed me the ropes. Then one day he asked me if I wanted to have a go in the cart. After a few laps he gave me the reins and said,“So you know how to stop? And you know how to steer?“I said yip and he hopped out and said I’ll see you in twenty minutes!”Trent continued his working at the stables whilst completing his University degree graduating from Lincoln University in 2012 with a Bachelor of Agricultural Science. However as his love for the horses grew, so too did his sense that harness racing was where his future lay!“As the horses came along, my interest slowly got bigger and bigger and I sort of decided I could turn it into a business. Then the Dancingonmoonlight opportunity came on board and I got the opportunity to combine both passions!”Plenty has changed over the last four years but one thing that hasn’t has been his commitment to excellence and innovation in everything he does.“Everything I do is based on science,” said Yesberg who when asked about his education being applied to his yearling prep was able to offer the following;“Theres a lot of old stigmas and people have their ways of doing things but a lot of mine is self-taught. I like to do a lot of research so all my feeds are all scientifically balanced and I know exactly how much each yearling is getting per kilo and bits and pieces like that. I have access to all the online databases through my uni degree so I look up all the journals and I know exactly how long to exercise my horses etc.”So there is a method to the madness!Trent prides himself on bringing innovation to his job and doing the one percenters that others may not give any thought too. As one of (if not) the youngest preparers, Trent’s ability to market his yearlings for clients is another aspect of his trade that shows he is a young man

with a good head on his shoulders. “That’s another aspect of it I try and bring to my role, as you know I’ve got the Facebook page, Twitter, the website. I put out a brochure every year and just try to go that extra yard for my vendors to get them the best possible price on sales day.”The best possible price isn’t something Trent has struggled with in recent years either with some of his yearlings going through the ring being snapped up at princely sums to some of Australasia’s biggest and best known buyers of stock.Emilio Rossati purchased Lot 316: Lipstickonyourcollar in 2014 for $95,000!

For someone who didn’t grow up around horses, one might wonder how

a city kid came to be the largest preparer of yearlings in the South

Island at only 25!

“To be honest I get just as much thrill from putting them through the ring as I do watching them progress as racehorses. “Mark Purdon came round to have a look at some horses and he didn’t have one of the fillies on the list. “I said to Mark, you’ve got to come have a look at this one, she’s a beautiful filly!”Purdon agreed to the tune of $75,000 in purchasing Northern Velocity who went on to win $150,000+ as a two-year-old including the 2YO Sales Series Final.Situated on a twelve acre block in Ohoka, Yesberg has eight large paddocks, four large yards and 10 boxes.  All of the fences are done in Gallagher’s EquiFence - which is the safest fencing available for horses and he also has an eight-horse walker with a crusher dust base which he says the yearlings love. With such a big team of nicely bred yearlings in this year’s draft it is impossible for Yesberg to narrow them down to one or two he likes.Taking the onus away from him, it must be hard to not get a little bit excited about putting De Lovely’s first colt, Lot 185 through the ring when he has an interest in the yearling himself!

2016 Premier Yearling Draft

Page 16: Breeding Matters - Yearling Sales Issue 2016

Five-win Christian Cullen mare Citylight will have her first foal presented at a yearling sale when Royal Gamble (by Bettor’s Delight) will make his appearance at the New Zealand Premier Yearling Sale in Christchurch.Five of Stephen Baucke’s seven training wins came via Citylight and now he’s hoping the 8-year-old bay mare will also deliver in the sales ring.“This colt looks and moves like his Mum. He is a very precocious animal. He comes racing to the gate when he sees you and always wants to be with you.“He floats along the ground like his mother did so I don’t think he will have too many problems being broken in and then adapting to pacing. He’s a lovely mover,” Invercargill-based Baucke said.Baucke and his wife Carol relocated from Waikato seven years ago where they now farm 330 cows. He said his harness racing passion had now developed into a hobby.

“I’ve also got a lovely A Rocknroll Dance filly out of Citylight. She is also a nice type. I’ve since put her back to Bettor’s Delight and the scan is due back next week (late January),” Baucke said. The Bauckes have had success at the New Zealand Premier Sale previously – albeit under nervous circumstances.“We sold Belkmyster (by Mach Three) at the ‘Earthquake Sale’ in 2011. He’s a younger half-brother to Citylight’s dam Operative Asset (by Armbro Operative).

“Belkmyster was a nice horse and went on to win 11 races and more than $100,000 for Graeme Anderson. Hopefully this friendly colt can do the same,” Baucke said.

STEPHEN AND CAROL BAUCKE (Lot 165): Conon River: Raffaello Ambrosio - Diedre’s Girl (by Roydon Boy)

Last year’s 2-year-old Trotting Colt/Gelding-Of-The-Year, Conon Bridge will have a full brother go through the ring at the New Zealand Premier Yearling Sale at Addington next month. The Raffaello Ambrosio – Diedre’s Girl colt named Conon River was bred and is owned by Designer Investments Limited and will be prepared in Christchurch by Jan Hamilton of North Canterbury.Conon Bridge has won six of his nine starts ($120,784) – three each in Australia and New Zealand.Diedre’s Girl leaves big correct horses and the Raffaello Ambrosio crossseems to work perfectly.“Sadly he died last year and these two colts are the only ones he left from the mare. This colt is going to be bigger than Conon Bridge.

“I fell in love with Conon Bridge when I first saw him and this one could be just as good, if not better. He moves beautifully like his brother,” Hamilton said.Conon River is the 10th and last foal left by Diedre’s Girl (Roydon Boy – Diedre Hanover). Conon Bridge is her best performed foal in New Zealand. From Dec 1998 until December 1999 the now 21-year-old broodmare raced 23 times for trainer Fred Fletcher. She won three of those starts and placed in one other for trainer Fred Fletcher.

JAN HAMILTON (Lot 181): Royal Gamble: Better’s Delight - Citylight (by Christian Cullen)

“Our sport consists of breeders and preparers handling large and small drafts. The NZSBA would like to acknowledge some of our smaller folks who are doing an outstanding job preparing for this year’s Yearling Sales in the South Island.”

His great grandparents are a mix of Albatross, Noodlum and the mighty 21-win mare Hilarious Guest so don’t be surprised if King Of Heroes fetches a nice price at The New Zealand Premier Sale in Christchurch next month. He’s the only yearling his breeder and owner Karina Vermeulen (Loburn) will have at this year’s Sales and it comes with a tinge of sadness.“His dam (Radiant Guest) has done a super job and sadly this colt is her last foal. She has left us 14 foals and this last one is the only one by Washington VC.“She’s been so good to us and you just know when their time is up. I wouldn’t be able to live with myself if she had birthing complications with future foals.“She’s 23 now and this fella is her last,” Vermeulen said.Radiant Guest is by Vance Hanover and out of the un-raced Noodlum-Hilarious Guest mare, She’s The Best. She had four trials in 1995 and 1996 but never raced because of injury.“She was a lovely kind mare who left some really nice foals. It’s important that I look after her in her twilight

years after what she did for us,” Vermeulen said.Radiant Guest has an impeccable record at yearling sales.2006 Christian Cullen - A New Sensation filly sold for $125,000; 2005 Mach Three colt He’s My Hero sold for $50,000; 2007 Christian Cullen filly Perfect Sensation sold for $50,000; and 2010 Art Major colt - Explosive Art sold for $35,000.“I was really happy with most of the prices but I thought I would get more for Explosive Art, so even though this latest colt is well bred I’m not taking a big price for granted,” Vermeulen said. He’s My Hero (10 wins) and Explosive Art (six wins) and her first foal Fake Rose (by Fake Left) six wins have been Radiant Guest’s best New Zealand performers so far.“Whatever price he goes for the owners are in for a really nice horse,” the North Canterbury horsewoman said.

KARINA VERMEULEN (Lot 350): King Of Heros: Washington VC – Radiant Guest (by Vance Hanover)

Alistair Roberts of Gravel Plains Limited in North Canterbury is no skite but the Swannanoa horseman is hoping a yearling with the same name can do the business at the New Zealand Premier Sale in Christchurch next month.Skyte (Skyvalley – Damage Control) is the only horse that Roberts is preparing for the South Island Sale, but rates the bay colt as one of the best yearlings Gravel Plains has produced.

“Just before the PGG Wrightson reps came and saw him I was looking at the colt thinking what a beautiful athletic type he was. Then when PGG Wrightsons arrived they said exactly the same thing.“We have high aspirations for him. We just love Skyvalley. We would go back to him forever and a day if we could,” Roberts said.He said that unless he went to the three major commercial trotting stallions like Monarchy, Majestic Son and Skyvalley the only option was frozen semen.“We couldn’t get her in foal to Lucky Chucky last year so we will try again with her in 2016. Her progeny have fetched smallish prices in 2008 and 2009 and we expect a lot bigger with this lovely Skyvalley cross,” said Roberts.

It will be the third time Roberts has prepared a Damage Control (Armbro Invasion – Bouquet D’Etoile) foal at the yearling sales.“In 2008 Oliver Cromwell (Monarchy colt) fetched $8,000 and a year later we got $10,000 for The Main Squeeze (Sundon filly).

“This one looks way nicer and I’ll be very surprised if his price isn’t way beyond what those two got,” Roberts said.

Damage Control only raced three times for Fred Fletcher for an 11th and two 10ths. She has left nine foals between 2004 and 2014.Her best New Zealand performer so far has been the Kyle Cameron two-win Monarchy 5-year-old gelding – Foreverman. He is foal number six.

In mid-December, NZSBA Chairman, John Mooney and I ventured north to meet with the people who help keep a non-profit organisation like ours ticking over, the sponsors, breeders and advertisers.

Having at the time only been in the role for six weeks, it was a good opportunity before Christmas to catch up and put some faces to names. We also took the time to find out how we can work better together to deliver more value for sponsors, but also you, the NZSBA members and breeding community.

Whilst on the trip I got my first practical experience in breeding standardbreds. We made the trip at sparrows fart down to Clevedon to visit the wonderful facility at Woodlands Stud. It was a scan/serve day and a big thank you must go to Andrew Grierson, his vet Petra and the rest of the team for taking the time to walk me through the process. While I wasn’t literally getting my hands (or hand) dirty, I came away from the experience with some valuable knowledge you don’t get from reading books.

Just down the road we visited Paul and Mary Kenny who had kindly arranged for us to meet with Charlies Roberts, his wonder mare Adore Me and get a picture or two with the breeder’s miniature New Zealand Trotting Cup presented by us to Charles at our Cup Eve Breeders’ function.

Adore Me was in sensational order, and the second she heard the clicking of the cameras, the ears were pricked and she knew exactly what was going on. Even taking the time to pull the equine equivalent of a curtsey. Mary Kenny told us a great wee tale about the retired champ saying she was no diva in the stables, so as long as she was the first to be fed!

As many of you will know she is heavily in foal to first season Woodlands sire, Sweet Lou. We are so fortunate to bring you the first published pictures of

the champion mare in foal for the first time and a big thank you to the Kenny’s and Andrew Grierson for helping us arrange this.

I was also lucky enough to be able to visit Graeme Henley and the incredible smooth-working establishment that is Alabar Stud on Friday and early Monday morning. This was another chapter in my breeding education as I was kindly allowed to attend on a morning of a ‘stallion collect’.

It was an incredible sight to see first-hand and I have the upmost respect for his stallion handlers Nigel Fahy and Wayne McNamara who have the tricky task of retrieving these equine beasts and coaxing them into what is now their life post racing. I must say Auckland Reactor and the other stallions were in sensational order, and a big thank you must go to Graeme and his staff for again taking the time to walk me through their processes from collection to dispatch.

While on the trip I was ecstatic to receive a text from Sara Smith telling me I was going to be a father! Before the rumour mill goes into overdrive, Sara had been trying her darndest to get the former open class trotting mare (Tui) Toomuch To Do in foal via the frozen semen of Muscle Hill. Being an older mare this isn’t the easiest task. I want to thank her for helping me so much thus far on my breeding journey.

My breeding education came full circle whilst landing at Christchurch airport when John received a call to inform him his grand old mare, Lucinda Midfrew had foaled whilst we were in the air. She has left a gorgeous Rocknroll Hanover filly and it was special to see a foal so young in its infancy making sense of her new surroundings. I can’t wait to experience that feeling with a foal of my own one day soon, and with that our trip was a resounding success

Don Bates does not expect to end the Premier Sale next month in a state of euphoria.Next year it should be different; but this one he says will be nothing special.

He knows the outcome will be the result from his own cautious endeavours two years ago.He went into the 2013 breeding season with a high degree of uncertainty.

The founder of Norwegian Wood Breeding was considering two options.

“I tossed up between getting out altogether or sending the mares to cheaper stallions. Although I might get less for the product, I thought the margin of profit might turn out better,” he said. With one each by Bettor’s Delight, Mach Three, Betterthancheddar, two by Auckland Reactor and four by Changeover on offer this year, Bates will soon find out if his mix brings that profit. As a vendor for more than 20 years, Bates is an old hand at the game. As an owner and breeder, he started 20 years before that with the purchase of Carnroe, an Eagle Armbro mare whose granddam was Elsinore, dam of Robalan, 26 wins.

To Good Chase, Carnroe left Norwegian Wood, the winner of one from 25 starts but the matriarch of a lovely family that includes Hey Jude, Lennon, Revolution and Penny Lane.

Bates has fond memories of his early days at the sales.

“In my first year I got $85,000 in total for three yearlings. That was a pretty good return, and in the first five years I grossed $250,000.

“I’ve been breeding and selling every year since.“On the breeding side I’d be well ahead but not on the racing side.”

In the past, and while he had a small racing team, Bates did not prepare his yearlings; this year he’s doing them himself.

“This is the first time I’m doing them on my own. I’ve got nine, and I’d find it too expensive getting that many done outside.”

By Mike Grainger

Don Bates expects a quiet year while

re-invigorating his breed

Page 23: Breeding Matters - Yearling Sales Issue 2016

2016 CANTERBURY & SOUTHLAND YEARLING TOURSFeaturing over 50 quality lots!

What also has changed recently is the introduction of new blood to his band of mares. Artishake (6 wins) is an Artiscape mare with a Bettor’s Delight colt on offer; he will sell an Auckland Reactor colt from Miss Bubbles (8 wins) and the dam of Major Bubbles (9 wins), Dixie Belle is a McArdle mare with a filly being offered by Betterthancheddar, and there is a Mach Three filly from the family of Marika (11 wins) and Russian Road (6 wins). And just recently he paid “good money” for Glenferrie EJ, a 1.55 Art Major from Maikona, one of his old Norwegian Wood breed.

Glenferrie EJ is in foal to Bettor’s Delight and one of 17 mares he has put in foal this season. Ten have gone to Art Major, and the others to Bettor’s Delight (4), Angus Hall, Christian Cullen and Betterthancheddar.

And it’s turned out pretty good. Next year I’ll have nine colts in the sale by Bettor’s Delight – from Miss Bubbles, Penny Lane, Something, Strawberry Fields, and some others, and the Majestic Son colt is from Escapee.

“It may be a bonanza for me. Last year the Bettor’s Delights averaged about $50,000, so if I can average the average I’ll be very happy.”

While Bates doesn’t expect “a great sale” he knows from long experience that any well-presented yearling will sell.

Frequently asked questions Every Standardbred horse owner has their own individual requirements for their horses. JLT Bloodstock provide flexible, customized insurance cover to meet every one of their clients needs. Here is a sample of some of the most commonly asked questions Standardbred horse owners ask us. These should give you an idea of the type of insurance that’s best for you and your horse. Why should I insure my Standardbred? Next to your home, property or car, your horse may be one of the most expensive purchases you will ever make. If the worst should happen, many of us can’t afford to pay expensive vet bills, or purchase a new horse. That’s why it makes sense to protect yourself, your investment and your horse with quality insurance cover. Does the insurance policy cover transport? All policies include transit within and between NZ & Australia. The geographical limits can be extended to include other countries on request.

Do I need a Vet Certificate? Veterinary examinations are required for all Standardbred horses with a sum insured of $100,000 and over unless under fall of hammer cover. All horses under 30 days and 15 years and over are also subject to a Veterinary examination. All other Standardbred horses from 30 days to 15 years are subject to an acceptable Declaration of Health. What are my payment options? You can pay by direct credit, cheque, Visa or MasterCard. Other options including monthly payment options can be arranged on an individual basis. What happens if I have a claim? You will need to call us on 0800 383 071 immediately. A post mortem & Vet Certificate are required.

Good type, a powerful pedigree, a strong upbringing and superior presentation are the overriding factors in Australian buyers flocking to the annual NZ yearling sales conducted by PGG Wrightson at Karaka and Christchurch.

A recent poll of leading Australian horsemen and women, who have enjoyed success with NZ sale graduates in the last few years, shows that Aussie interest in the NZ product is at an all-time high.

The interest has no doubt been buoyed by the results of feature racing in Australia in the last decade.

The last four Australasian Grand Circuit champions namely Christen Me, Im Themightyquinn, Smoken Up and Monkey King were all born and raised in the ‘Land of the Long White Cloud’.

Furthermore, the last six A. G. Hunter Cup winners, the last eight WA Pacing Cup winners and three of the last six Miracle Mile victors were bred in NZ, while in the 2014/15 season NZ breds captured no less than 21 Group races in Australia.

Perth horseman Gary Elson, a whiz with young racing stock, bought 10 yearlings at sales in NZ and Australia in 2014 and eight have raced and six have been successful.

Topping the bill is the brilliant Sprinter, a $34,000 purchase at the Karaka sale who has returned $162,243 from eight wins and three placings from 11 appearances.

Last year’s WA 2YO of the Year, the big son of Mach Three and Forgotten Dreams captured the Group 1 Golden Slipper and Group 2 Champagne Classic.

Other winners for Elson from the 2014 NZ sales round have been Mustang Bromac (Bettor’s Delight-Morad), Estocada (American Ideal-Queen’s Reach) and Good Times Ahead (Mach Three-Maheer Princess).

“I only buy by good stallions and I like a really strong maternal line with a bit of Group 1 up close. I’ve found that you don’t do any good buying ones from old mares,” Elson said.

“I just look at them on type. They must have a good eye and be square up front.”

Fellow WA horsemen Trevor Lindsay, Justin Prentice and Mike Reed have been other major players at recent NZ sales from over in the West.

Lindsay, the manager of Karnup Racing Pty Ltd, has enjoyed plenty of success with members of the fairer sex.

“I’ve bought a few handy mares over there. Obviously, Bettor Cover Lover is the best of them. We bought her for $12,000,” Lindsay said.

Bettor Cover Lover (Bettor’s Delight-Front Cover Lover) won 19 of her 36 starts – including six Group 1’s - and finished up with a stakes tally of just over $1-million.

The Christian Cullen mares Robyn’s C C, Anna Faye and For Your Eyes Only and the Live Or Die mare Smart By Design were all capable racemares for Lindsay, while the Falcon Seelster mare Miss Anaconda (dam of this season’s top 3YO filly Bettor Boa) and the Christian Cullen mare Jacinta Jones (dam of two 1:57 winners) have been top producers.

“We’re looking to buy fillies, so we’re looking for a nice pedigree page. We look for nice types with straight legs,” Lindsay said.

“We have found that we haven’t got any that we wish we had left over there!”

Gun Perth horseman Justin Prentice, a keen student of bloodlines, bought Major Reality (Art Major-Reality Check) for $31,000 at the 2013 NZ sales.

A winner of 10 of her 17 starts and $189,787 in stakes so far, Major Reality’s principal successes have been the WA Oaks and Solid Gold Bracelet.

The Parade (Real Desire-Hearty Lass), the winner of 16 races and $247,369 to date, Quite A Delight (Bettor’s Delight-Cullen’s Creation), seven wins and $76,799, and the Courage Under Fire three-year-old filly Zuleika are other astute NZ sale purchases by Prentice.

Prentice said: “I do all my crosses before I go over. Then I plan which lots I want to inspect. I then mark them on their overall appearance and conformation. I have only bought from the South Island, mainly because the North Island yearlings are too expensive.”

Huge Aussie interest expected for NZ yearling sales

Mike Reed, who developed such topliners as Another Party and Libertybelle Midfrew, has been a buyer at the NZ sales for the last three years. Apart from Libertybelle Midfrew (bought as a going concern), Reed’s recent NZ purchases include the siblings Katie Maguire (by Bettor’s Delight) and Robbie Maguire (by Mach Three), both Gloucester Park winners.

“I have to like the way they stand and the way they walk. I like a nice head on a horse. Nice strong bones and a horse with quick reflexes,” Reed commented.

Premier Victorian trainer Andy Gath has achieved unprecedented success over the past 18 months with a couple of Auckland sale graduates, Burnaholeinmypocket (Bettor’s Delight-Kelly Maguire) and Padrisimo (Bettor’s Delight- LC Tricky).

Burnaholeinmypocket, a $25,000 purchase, has netted $131,999 from 10 wins in 21 starts including the Group 1 Queensland Nursery, while the diminutive Padrisimo has returned $92,695 on a $20,000 outlay highlighted by the NSW Tatlow Memorial and Victoria Youthful Stakes.

Gath said: “I select them mainly on type. They need to have good conformation and be good walkers. I have to like the sire and the broodmare sire. The rest of the pedigree page in my opinion doesn’t matter that much. I have a leaning for colts.

“I only attend the Auckland sales, mainly because of the timing with our feature racing back home. Most of the vendors in Auckland prepare their yearlings at a very high level,” he added.

Merv Butterworth, a major buyer of NZ going horses and owner of NZ Cup and Hunter Cup hero Arden Rooney, said “the climate, the grass and the racing fraternity are an added bonus when you purchase a PGG yearling, particularly as all yearlings are inspected and sorted out by PGG before they are eligible for acceptance by PGG.”

“This means heaps of credibility,” Merv stated.

“The climate for raising foals in NZ is superior to most parts of Australia.”

Motu Premier (Bettor’s Delight-Motu Pocket O’Jewels), a $100,000 yearling purchase, is the best of the three youngsters secured by Butterworth at the 2014 Premier Sale.

Out of a half-sister to Merv’s multiple Group and Listed winner Motu Crusader ($361,343), Motu Premier has won four and been placed nine times from 16 starts for $143,823 in stakes.

G I Joe (Bettor’s Delight-Breath Of Life), an Ashburton three-year-old winner last October, and the promising Beaudiene Firefly, a ‘Courage’ filly closely related to Butterworth’s dual Derby winner Best Deal Yet, were other purchases at the 2014 sale.

All were broken in by Mark Smolenksi and are trained by Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen.

Meanwhile, Merv purchased a filly, Crystal Sparkles (Rocknroll Hanover-Taylor Kate), for $50,000 at last year’s Australasian Classic Sale, and two colts in Motu Meteor, a Bettor’s Delight half-brother to Motu Crusader; and President Roydon (The Pres-Dear Diedre) for $97,500 and $10,000 respectively at the NZ Premier.

The trio have all shown up at the trials and look like making the grade.

Melbourne owner-breeder Jean Feiss, who shelled out $52,500 at the 2014 Premier Sale for NZ 2YO Colt of the Year Chase The Dream (Bettor’s Delight-Christian Dreamer), commented: “I look for good conformation, a good walker, strong hind quarters and a nice head. The performance of the sire and the dam is important.”

“I also like to see what the horses are staked for. A lot of breeders let themselves down by not nominating for some stakes races.”

The wait is almost overThe very first

Auckland Reactor yearlings are about

to enter the sale ring

Page 30: Breeding Matters - Yearling Sales Issue 2016

The wait for the first yearlings by Auckland Reactor has been a long one.

This wait has been made even more tantalizing by the exceptional siring deeds of Somebeachsomewhere.

After all, in 2008 the two best pacers in the world were Somebeachsomewhere in the Northern Hemisphere and Auckland Reactor in the Southern.

They were both three-year-old sons of Mach Three, both had breed-changing speed and both were cutting a virtually unbeaten swathe through the records books and the premier race calendar.

Somebeachsomewhere retired at the end of his three-year-old season and has become a siring superstar.

Auckland Reactor raced on, winning the NZ Free-For-All, Auckland Cup, Taylor Mile, NZ Messenger, NZ Jewels and a clean sweep of the Inter Dominion Heats at Gloucester Park.

He retired to stud in 2013.

Auckland Reactor has attracted the books of mares he so richly deserved. He has rewarded breeders with his outstanding fertility and by leaving so much of himself in his foals – his good size, excellent conformation and lovely temperament.

His story has been one of breathtaking triumphs interlaced with adversity and misfortune – a wonderful story that has caught the imagination of so many, brought harness racing to the attention of the mainstream media and even saw him introduced to the Prime Minister.

But the story is only just beginning. The next chapter is now about to unfold.

Sales Graduates By Duane Ranger

LAZARUS (3 B c Bettor’s Delight - Bethany)  New Zealand’s best 3-year-old male pacer Lazarus was always a lovely little horse who had no problems sussing out what the racing game was all about.“He was a quick learner,” said Brian West. “He was a kind little fella who had a nice Bettor’s Delight nature. He was quite intelligent. In many ways he was just like his mother Bethany (by Christian Cullen). She was kind, nice and easy to handle as well.”West is the managing director of Studholme Bloodtsock. Together with Gavin Chin the company bred Lazarus. But West never thought the gifted bay would fetch $75,000 at the New Zealand Premier Yearling Sale in Christchurch two years ago.“It was a very strong Sale and even though I picked him in the top three in our draft I didn’t expect him to get the price he did. I thought he was a nice wee colt but not $75,000 nice. “We generally have a draft 15 yearlings and it’s sometimes sad to see them go after having weaned them and watched their characters develop. I remember we had 12 in that draft that year,” West said. He said up until Lazarus came along the 20-win New Zealand pacer Bit Of A Legend (Bettor’s Delight – Soky’s Legend) was the best that he had bred.“In terms of excitement and reward this horse has surpassed what Bit Of A legend achieved. He placed in a couple of Group Ones here but this little fella has already won a couple of Group Ones and almost $500,000,” said West. The Mark Purdon and Natalie Rasmussen trained Lazarus has beaten stablemate Chase The Dream twice in two big 3-year-old races this season. On (NZ) Cup Day he won the $160,000 NRMZ Sires Stakes 3yo Final at Addington Raceway, and then last start on December 31 he nailed the Group One $200,000 PGG Wrightson New Zealand Yearling Sales Final at Alexandra Park. For the record when Phil & Glenys Kennard, Trevor Casey, and Kevin Riseley bought Lazarus at the Sales his original name was Better Than The Best.He has now won 10 of his 12 starts and placed in two others for $488,262.Other 3-year-olds who have kicked on from PGG Wrightson’s two annual yearling sales at Karaka and Christchurch in 2014 have been:

CHASE THE DREAM: (3 B c Bettor’s Delight - Christian Dreamer)  Sold for $52,500. Now won eight of his 16 starts and placed in five others for $294,546 for Purdon and Rasmussen. Both of his Group One victories came as a 2-year-old in the Breckon Farms Young Guns Cardigan Bay Stakes on March 6 at Alexandra Park and the Garrard’s New Zealand Sires Stakes Final at Addington Raceway on May 15. “He’s a really tough little guy and I think the best is ahead of him. He’s so strong and versatile,” said regular pilot Natalie Rasmussen.

Sale of the

ART FORM (3 Br c Art Major - Highfields Diamond) Sold for $40,000. Won four of his 12 starts and placed in four others for $66,502 for Steven Reid and Simon McMullan. He won this season’s Northern 3yo Stakes at Alexandra Park and he did place behind Lazarus and Chase The Dream last start in the Group One $200,000 PGG Wrightson New Zealand Yearling Sales Final at Alexandra Park.“He has surprised me a bit this season. He came back a lot stronger this time in and I think he has a bright career ahead of him,” Reid said.

Lazarus

Chase The Dream

SHANDALE (3 B c Art Major - Delightful Dale) Sold for $52,000. Has won three of his 16 starts and placed in six others for $94,051.His best performance so far was runner-up behind Lazarus in the Group Two Elsu Classic at Alexandra Park in December.Regular driver Maurice McKendry said:“He is a handy horse who seldom goes a bad race. He isn’t that inferior to the best going around. I think he will make a nice late 3-year-old and 4-year-old.”

Page 39: Breeding Matters - Yearling Sales Issue 2016

FRANCO CHRISTIANO (3 B g Bettor’s Delight - Cherish A Franco)Sold for $92,500. Now won four of his seven starts and placed in one other for $30,895.He finished down the field in his only Group One race (Sires Stakes Final) on Cup Day but he’s way better than that.He won his first four races in a row and here’s what trainer Robert Dunn had to say about him:“He is a very nice pacer in the making. He is a bit green still but is very classy, He has a bit to learn, but the raw talent is there”.

BEAUDIENE BEAUFIGHTA (3 B c Bettor’s Delight - Beaudiene Babe) Sold for $140,000. Winner of one of his four starts and placed in two others for trainer Ray Green. He is yet to line up in a Group race but he did win on debut in a sedate time at Alexandra Park on October 1. All four of his races were in October and he hasn’t been seen since.“He’s a nice colt who possesses quite a bit of talent. He’s the type of horse who just needs time. I can see him making a nice late 3-year-old or 4-year-old

Fight for Glory (4 B m Art Major - Breath Of Life)Breeder Diane Cournane’s pride and joy Fight For Glory (Art Major - Breath Of Life by Village Jasper) has taken Diane and her racing partners on an amazing journey. From starts in Australia and New Zealand, 12 wins and $645,421 in stakes make up an impressive portfolio. With a basket of Group wins the filly was named Australian Pacing 3YO Filly of the Year, missing out in NZ to the brilliant The Orange Agent. Lot 524 Fight For Glory’s full brother should bring a strong buying bench to Christchurch for the second to last lot of the Sale!

Speeding Spur (4 B h Pegasus Spur - Della’s Speed)Speeding Spur went to the Sales and no-one wanted him. What an opportunity missed! The Woodlands Stud bred son of Pegasus Spur and Delia’s Speed (by Chiola Hanover) won the New Zealand and Northern Trotting Derbys, the PGG Wrightson NZ Yearling Sales 3YO Trot before heading across the Tasman claiming the Victoria Trotting Derby and the Breeders’ Crown 3YO title. Speeding Spur, raced by All Blacks Kieran Read and Andy Ellis, Crusaders forwards coach Dave Hewett, Commonwealth Games gold medal winner Dick Tayler and the Woodlands Partnership Syndicate, Speeding Spur has banked an impressive $376,000 from 24 starts and 15 wins.

Conon Bridge (3 B c Raffaello Ambrosio-Diedre’s Girl)This talented trotter is closely related to Hurricane Flyer, Thanksgiving, Deidre’s Pride and the emerging star Monbet. By the lovely but prematurely gone Raffaello Ambrosio (USA) out of Deirdre’s Girl (Roydon Boy) his 6 wins (9 starts in Aust/NZ and $120,784) included the PGG Wrightson NZ yearling Sales Trot and the 2YO Australian Breeders Crown. Lot 181 gives buyers the option to secure the full brother to the 2015 NZ 2YO Trotter of the Year

Have Faith in Me  (4 B g Bettor’s Delight - Scuse Me)What is there to say about this wonderful 4YO gelding that swept all before him last season and stunned with a Auckland Cup win a few weeks ago. Breeding royalty gave us this horse to watch and enjoy being by the world’s best stallion Bettor’s Delight and New Zealand’s broodmare doyen Scuse Me. This Sales graduate took all the major 3YO races last season. Dennis Dunford, who races Have Faith In Me with his son Mark, is on a journey that is hard to believe. Several times after being in awe of the horse’s performance Dennis has said the “it’s hard to believe what he has done. Everybody talks about this horse because he was so good at three so there is a lot of expectation’. May that expectation continue. We need champions. What a thrill for breeder Charles Robert, the Dunfords and the All Stars team if Have Faith in Me can follow his sister Adore Me’s example and win the NZ Cup in 2016.

The grand old gal of the sales is not the wonderful racemare Under Cover Lover but she’s close to it.No Paba, aged 23, and with her 15th foal heading into the ring, is one who beats her for age.Part-owner Graham Pearson said at the age of 21 Under Cover Lover is still wearing well, but the commercial clock as breeders is ticking for both of them.Pearson says “it’s possible” her Big Jim colt selling at the Premier could be her last and if he succeeds “in trying to cut down” his term as a vendor might not be far behind.“It really depends on her.“She’s just about done enough, and she’s not as commercial as she was.“But she’s still healthy, and with a positive to A Rockinroll Dance she’s still getting in foal.”Since her remarkable career, in America after New Zealand, Under Cover Lover has been a consistent if not spectacular breeder of good horses: 11 foals, seven to race, five of them winners. They always had a tough act to follow. From 70 starts, the In the Pocket mare won 21, ran 11 seconds, 11 thirds, and earned $864,923. Her wins included the Great Northern Oaks, NZ Sires’ Stakes Final, New Zealand Oaks, Ashburton Flying Stakes, NZ Standardbred Breeders Stakes and in the US she took a mark of 1.51.8.For the second part of her career, each year Pearson and co-owner Jerry Tulley have put her progeny on the market.Affairs Of State, by Presidential Ball, sold for $90,000 to the Breckons; Art Lover, by Artsplace, was bought privately by Graham Court; Exotic Lover, by Artsplace, went through the ring for $62,000; Fortune Lover, also by Artsplace, was sold at the Premier for $55,000; Under The Odds, by Bettor’s Delight, was bought by Ian Dobson for $70,000; High Valour, by McArdle,

went for $35,000; Grand Cru, by Bettor’s Delight was a $58,000 purchase and went to Perth; Artistic Lover, by Art Major, was bought back for $25,000; A Bettor Lover, by Bettor’s Delight, was rejected and was bought later for $5500 and is racing, and LA Confidential is an American Ideal sold privately as a weanling, and working up now for Kirstin Barclay. And finally comes Alanya, a colt by Big Jim who might be as good as he looks.“We sent her to Big Jim because it’s a matter of what you can afford and we didn’t want to spend too much, not on her at the age she is.“But Kerry Shaw has been to inspect him and said ‘I’m going to mark him a standout’. He said he couldn’t fault him. He’s just a nice size, a good, dark bay all over.”Pearson was hardly out of his teens when he fell for the breeding game. He bought Charlotte, a mare by Caduceus off Iris Litten, sent her to Bachelor Hanover when he first arrived, and bred a colt he sold as a yearling at the auction. The numbers have grown to as many as 10 broodmares at times and always a small racing team. Now the racing team is just Alburqueque, who’s in foal to Terror To Love. His four foals this year are A Rockinroll Dance colts from Under Cover Lover, Oaxaca Lass and Princess Alberta, a filly by the same sire from Artistic Lover. This season Under Cover Lover, Artistic Lover and Oaxaca Lass have been served by Auckland Reactor and Princess Alberta went to Gold Ace.In the meantime, Pearson has his glass fill running his boutique vineyard and winery, now under the Mon Cheval label and available in the top end restaurants.“The horses have been paying for the wine, but I hope soon the wine will be paying for the horses,” he said.

Under Cover Lover still wearing well … but will her Big Jim colt be the last?

“We sent her to Big Jim because it’s a matter of what you can afford and we didn’t

want to spend too much, not on her at the age she is”.

The catalogue is strong again this year and much anticipation and tentative optimism is in the air. Breckon Farms consider their 2016 draft to be their strongest ever and this has been reinforced by feedback already received on the very high quality and standard of horses they are presenting

The Breckon family’s involvement in our Harness Racing Industry really began back in 1995, when an article in the NZ Herald first ignited brothers Pete and Ken’s interest in harness racing. A visit to the upcoming sales resulted in their purchase of a filly called Megaera. She quickly became a very successful racehorse giving them a ‘thrilling ride’, winning 8 races and $250,646 in stakes. On retirement Megaera became the foundation of their developing breeding establishment and so this initial sales purchase began a long friendship and business relationship with Sandy Yarndley. In recent years after the unfortunate death of Pete, Ken and Karen Breckon purchased Yarndley Farms to set up their own breeding establishment, as Breckon Farms.

The farm, with a lot of additional input from Ken and Karen, has become a show place for the Standardbred Industry and in recent years won an environmental award in biodiversity for Habitat Protection and Management.

The Breckons, quite overwhelmed with their early success, quickly saw the benefit in giving back to the industry from which they have had so much enjoyment. Initially they began with local race sponsorship, which as their horses progressed, has spread to a national level. Being keen to involve many of their family and friends in the fun they experience in harness racing, in recent years they have established a racing syndicate annually for a number of their fillies. The success of Group 1 winning fillies Linda Lovegrace and High Gait, as well as many other winners, see the syndicates fill very quickly each year.

The Breckon Farms draft this year, expertly prepared by Scott Yarndley and his team at the Te Awamutu farm, is once again the largest in the sale and certainly has some class acts amongst it, with many

yearlings from some of New Zealand’s best families and closely related to current top performing racehorses. Among those on offer are first foals from classic racemares, half-brothers and sisters to top performers, yearlings from top performers, all by leading sires in this part of the world and globally.

This year the standout lot could possibly be Lot 83, an impeccably bred trotting filly. Aptly named Girls On Film, she is an impressive looking individual, with the backing of a red hot pedigree, being all-American bred by brilliant racehorse and now leading sire in Muscle Hill (1:50.2, $3,273,342) out of the race winning Malabar Maple mare Regal Volo ($25,231) who is compiling an outstanding record at stud, having already left from her first three foals (Our) Twentyten (1:58.9, 14 wins, $235,,834, Breeders Crown Champion), Alannah Hall (1:58.6, 5 wins, $33,033) and High Gait (2:00.7, 8 wins, $151,451, Breeders Crown Champion, NZ 2YO Trotting Filly of the Year, Australian 2YO Trotting Filly of the Year). Her fourth foal is the Love You 2-year-old filly Regal Love who was a very impressive trial winner at her first public appearance and is held in very high regard by the All Star Stable.

Sale Day for the Breckon Farms Draft is set to start with a bang with Lot 1 an impressive Rocknroll Hanover filly very closely related to champion pacer and now successful sire, Changeover (1:53.4, 29 wins, $2,426,765).

You can view the Breckon Farms draft, together with photos and videos on their website at http://www.breckonfarms.co.nz/2016-sale-yearlings/, or visit http://standardbred.pggwrightson.co.nz/Sales/UpcomingLots/84. As always the Breckon Farms staff will be ready to personally parade any of their draft for you from the afternoon of the 20th February and look forward to seeing you at the Parade Day on the 21st February and then ready to go the next day at the Sale on the 22nd February, all of course at Karaka, Auckland.

Hamish Scott realised this upon purchasing his first broodmare and duly consulted his dear partner Kim before making the purchase in a hilarious anecdote that plays out below. The rest as they say is history. His band of ‘Kiwi’ progeny took our racetracks by storm and few will forget the deeds of Kiwi Ingenuity before she was suddenly retired to the broodmare barn. More recently, Kiwi Legend (since sold) which ran second to Beaudine Boaz in the Gold Nugget on Interdom final day was spanking his NZ opposition before heading to Australia. We caught up with Hamish for our fifth instalment of ‘Breeders’ Profiles’.

NZSBA Breeders’ Profile: Hamish Scott

Few men in a relationship (and the women will agree) will argue the adage, ‘happy

wife, happy life’.

Whilst at Otago University I went with some friends to Forbury Park – I think that was my first harness racing meeting. Before that I used to go to the Riverton Races at Easter with my Mum and Dad. I ended up working for Ernst & Young in Invercargill for a few years and was in a Syndicate at work organised by Mark O’Connor (who has gone on to grander things!). Kim got involved by default – but she is very understanding!

What got you interested in Harness Racing?

How long have you been breeding Standardbreds? Our first broodmare was the first filly we purchased. We purchased Kiwi Express off Allan and Sarah Donaldson around 1998 as a yearling. When I say we, I actually mean “I” as I purchased Kiwi Express

without mentioning it to Kim, I then told Kim during her lunch-break when she was a House Surgeon at Christchurch Hospital (we had shifted to Christchurch by then) knowing that she would be too busy to care – which worked a treat as she basically forgot about it until Kiwi Express was due to qualify!

She won 2 of her 5 starts but had some injury issues so was retired to stud in 2002. She was the first Horse we bred. It is fair to say she has been very good to us. All of the Horses we breed that originate from Kiwi Express have ‘Kiwi’ in the name. The Kiwi name really “belongs” to the Donaldson Family, but we have used it as it is really their family.

First race winner you bred? The first race winner we bred was from Kiwi Express called Kiwis Can Fly. She won her second race, and then three of her next five, retiring with 4 wins and a 2nd from 7 starts.

Why do you breed Standardbreds? We quite like the “thrill of the chase” in breeding horses. In most years we have purchased from the sales, but get a far bigger thrill from winning a race with one we bred – whether we still own it or not. Kim also enjoys naming foals.

We race, breed, buy at the sales and have purchased the occasional going horse. From experience the biggest risk is the breeding bit. The compensating factor is that breeding a winner is the most satisfying bit.

What is your favourite horse (or) the best one you have bred?My favourite Horse is Kiwi Express. She started it all for us. The best one we have bred is Kiwi Ingenuity, although the Kiwi fillies have all been quite good to us, including Kiwis Can Fly (4 wins from 7 starts and the dam of Kiwi Legend), A Good Kiwi Chick (4 wins from 9 starts) and Givematasteofkiwi (1 win from 3 starts to date). We have a number of progeny now starting to come through from this line and look forward to them racing in the future.

Favourite Stallion? My favourite Stallion of all time is Christian Cullen – mainly because he was the sire of KiwiIngenuity. He was such a super Race Horse and showed that NZ bred Horses are also stud propositions.

Have you bred anything this season?I think we have ended up breeding 12 of our 15 broodmares, including Kiwi Ingenuity, Kiwis Can Fly, A Good Kiwi Chick, Front Cover Lover, Front Up (a full sister to Bettor Cover Lover), Bella Arden, Harem Franco,Laurent (a half-sister to Lancome) and a few others. We have a few others that we will race with a view to entering the broodmare band at some stage. We have around 28 horses all up, plus a share in another six.

Something you would like to see change for Breeders? What would I like see change? I would like to see more of our money stay in New Zealand instead of heading off to America to fund their industry. That is money that is no longer in our industry. This is easier said than done – but it is achievable. I do have some ideas, but there is probably no room in this forum to expand on these without causing insomnia!

Also, although we prefer to breed horses ourselves, I do believe that there should be a greater focus on establishing breeding partnerships/syndicates with a view to making breeding more accessible and affordable to more people.

(Editor’s Note: Watch this space with the NZSBA in 2016)

Page 50: Breeding Matters - Yearling Sales Issue 2016

Not sure how everyone else does it, but at Perretti our doctrine was always “get them out and get them looked at” in deference to Joe O’Brien’s sentiment that a horse in the barn is useless. We figured we could never sell a horse in the stall; he had to be out on the floor as quickly as possible in order to get looked at. That said, stalling was always ultra-important as we felt “like with like” should generally be the rule of the day. It wasn’t necessarily the colts or fillies who we thought were best, but those likely to attract the most interest from the buyers. That said, we always had overachievers (individuals far superior to their pedigrees) in close proximity and we were well-known to sneak them out without being asked. While it wasn’t always possible, I would endeavor to keep some horses in similar proximity to the way they were stalled at the farm.    Generally speaking, a buyer will indeed inspect an add-on to his list if it’s correct, good-looking and available at the turn of a head. And should the buyer then say, “Got any more like that?” get them out. Pronto! Another reason to put like with like is so that one aisle might be trotting colts grouped together by sire as many buyers would ask to see “All the ‘Muscles’ colts,” meaning those by Muscles Yankee. The same buyers were more selective about the Enjoy Lavecs or Dream Vacations, but during  Muscles Yankee’s heyday, most wanted to see them all. It behooved us to make sure they did! Much the same applied to the Rocknroll Hanovers and No Nukes (when we had them), but again we’d have the overachievers by other leading sires in the immediate vicinity. Generally speaking, most buyers will mark the inventory cards with what they want to see. This provides a great opportunity to add a few more, but again, they’d better be worth looking at or you’ll have considerable egg on your face. The key here is the consignor knows his inventory better than the prospective purchaser; therefore, once one senses what they’re looking for, adding a couple more is seldom a problem. At the Perretti consignments, many trainers simply said “Show me what I should see,” meaning bring out the good ones.  At that point I’d also bring out some of the not-so-good, blue-blooded colts or fillies, illustrating that while you may not like this one, you should see him as your owner will undoubtedly ask.

They would almost always agree.  Try not to clutter up your aisles or you’ll get bogged down in times of heavy traffic. Have the showers show and the runners fetch or return the horses to their respective stalls. Some buyers might ask to see a horse in the aisle for a variety of reasons, but we always discouraged that unless the place was virtually empty.

It is always vital to have an answer about the requested horse’s immediate sibling as catalogs printed early do not necessarily show all the updates. A typical answer might be “Last year’s colt was small and turned out a bit, but as you can see, this guy has enough size.” The prospective purchaser can then judge the appearance and conformation for him or herself. One thing I tried never to do is look at the horse with the prospective buyer. Rather, I would watch him looking at the horse and see if I could glean from his body language what he might be thinking.  A word of caution, however: just because it seems he likes the horse doesn’t mean he intends to bid on it as there may be others on his list in other consignments that he likes better. Those others may go beyond his price range, which then might leave him eligible to bid on this one. Never dissuade a potential looker, even though you suspect the horse he’s asking for might bring far more than he may have to spend. The name of the game is “under bidders” and I can’t account for the number of people over the years who said “I love your horses, but I can’t buy them, as they bring too much money.” To that I would refute “stand next to a bid spotter and go to your number. If it goes beyond, walk away.” Not sure how many satisfied customers came up to me after the fact, to boast about “getting one of ours,” but over the years, that number was huge.

Organized ChaosThere’s something about

a horse sale that sends the creative juices into

overdrive—especially when you’re there as a consignor,

which I was for some quarter century for Perretti Farms and before that for a few years for

Boardwalk Associates.

Sales week will be bigger than Texas for Cambridge breeder/vendor Russell Nelson. The 68-year-old semi-retired farmer will marry his fiancée Jane Walker five days after the Australasian Classic Yearling Sale at Karaka, but before that he hopes Crackafellow will give him some much welcomed spending money.“He’s the only one I’ve got in the Sale this year. In fact he’s the only one by Well Said at the Auckland Sale. His 2 and 3-year-olds have won more than $12 million in the United States, so I’m hoping for a nice price.“I put my mare to him via frozen semen and this brown colt was the result,” the former Ashburton farmer said.

Nelson bred his first horse 40 years ago but then moved to England before returning to Mid Canterbury.“It was tough farming in the 1990s and I’ve only got back into it again in my retirement,” said Nelson.Crackafellow is the 10th  of 11 foals left by Impish (Falcon Seelster – Smarty Pants). She is currently in foal to Auckland Reactor and is likely to go back to him this year. The best she has left is foal number six – Bettor’s Delight black 6-year-old mare, The Fascinator, who has won 10 of her 42 starts and $155,162.

Vinibaka: Christian Cullen – Presidential Belle (Presidential Ball) Oneover isn’t the best 4-year-old racing in Perth but he’s not that inferior to the best – and stablemate – Beaudiene Boaz. Ross  Mackay  of Leanach Lodge in Cambridge prepared Oneover (Changeover – Presidential Belle) for the PGG Wrightson Yearling sale at Karaka in 2013. The brown colt fetched $26,000 that year and Mackay is confident Presidential Belle’s second foal can beat that price at Karaka on February 22. That foal is Christian Cullen bay colt Vinibaka. “He’s good looking and more physical than his older half-brother. He looks like that old school Colonial Christian Cullen type of colt. The other one was quite stylish but this fella is more robust and can do a good job,” 32-year-old Mackay said. Presidential Belle’s (Presidential Ball – Nuclear Atom) won five races for trainer Dave Odlum and owner C. B. McLean. In 2012 her Real Desire foal died and a year later she missed to Bettor’s Dream.

Mackay, who has long been involved in thoroughbred breeding and ownership, said he was glad to be preparing Vinibaka for Karaka. He thought the colt would fetch a nice price because his brother had now won 10 of his 31 starts and just over $160,000 since he was exported from Paul Kerr’s Ohoka barn to Gary Hall Senior in Perth in March last year. Oneover won three of his 16 starts in New Zealand for Paul and Mitchell Kerr. “He’s gone a 1:53.4 mile rate and he’s a Listed Classic winner who ran second to Beaudiene Boaz in the $125,000 Group One 4yo Classic at Gloucester Park in December. I think his young brother is destined for a bright future as well. “Whoever gets him will have themselves a nice horse,” Mackay said.

Vinibaka was bred by Miss W. M. Cameron and is owned by C. B. McLean.

ROSS MACKAY (Lot 104)Vinibaka: Christian Cullen – Presidential Belle (Presidential Ball)

“Our sport consists of breeders and preparers handling large and small drafts. The NZSBA would like to acknowledge some of our smaller folks who are doing an outstanding job preparing for this year’s Yearling Sales in the North Island.”

Page 53: Breeding Matters - Yearling Sales Issue 2016

Five-win Evander’s Gold brown mare Hanover The Gold will be represented by her eighth foal – More Shades Of Gold (by Majestic Son) at this year’s Australasian Classic Yearling Sale at Karaka. It will be also the third time Kumeu-based Megan Lloyd will have prepared Hanover The Gold’s progeny for the elite Sale on February 22. “I’ve prepared Show horses over the years and this isn’t much difference really. I love working with standardbreds. This fella is a nice colt and we are hoping he fetches the mare’s top price yet. “I think this fella is a more fashionable breed than what she has produced in the past and he’s a big strong guy, so fingers crossed,” Lloyd said. At the 2012 Sales her fifth foal – the now 5-year-old

Sundon colt, Bad Habbott was passed in but later sold for $9,000, while last year I’m Just Awesome (by Pegasus Spur) was also passed in. “Bad Habbott was later (July 2013) sold to Australia while the filly is now with James Stormont and is yet to race. This colt is nicer than those two. He’s sensible and a bit colty with a mind of his own. He will be missed,” Lloyd said.  Bad Habbott won two races in New Zealand for Stormont before going on to win 11 more and $111,482 in Australia. Hanover The Gold was trained by Lloyd’s father Bruce at Kumeu. As well as her five wins from 56 starts she also placed 23 times and won a smidgen under $50,000.

She would have almost been 10 now but the memory of John Taylor’s little grand-daughter – Georgia Brooke - will be strong as ever at the Australasian Classic Yearling Sale at Karaka on February 22.The little girl who died eight years ago at just 18 months of age not only has a Waikato Stud farm named after her but she also has an 8-year-old Christian Cullen broodmare named after her.It will also be her first representation at the Sales when Lot 15 – Georgia’s Baron (by Art Major) will enter the Sales ring. Taylor said he would be proud as punch when the bay colt made his appearance.“This is her second foal. We kept her first foal and she is now a 2-year-old filly. Her name is Georgia’s Belle and she is also by Art Major. We will keep her for breeding and racing purposes,” Taylor said. The Taylors only recently relocated from Huntly to Cambridge where they set up Georgia Brooke Lodge.

“We also ran Georgia Brooke Lodge from Huntly. We set it up in memory of our grand-daughter when we sold our sheep and beef farm. The colt is the only one we have in the Sale this year. “Last year we got $8,000 for an OK Matao Yearling. However we did put this colt in the Weanling Sales last year and got offered $40,000 for him but turned it down. “I think I will put the same $50,000 reserve on him this year. He is a special horse. Every time I look at him and the filly I think of dear wee Georgia,” Taylor said.

JOHN TAYLOR (Lot 15) Georgias Baron: Art Major – Georgia Brooke (Christian Cullen)

Archer Park will have one representative at the Auckland Sale, that being Somebeachsomewhere – Twice As Great colt named Duplicated - and if past Sales are anything to go by the team could be in for a lucrative day out. “He’s a lovely looking colt. He is very correct and has a similar body to the one we sold two years ago. If we could get the same price as what he fetched we would be rapt,” Drury-based Cherie Archer said. Big brother - Ideal Stride (by American Ideal) fetched $75,000 at the 2014 Australasian Classic Yearling Sale. He never raced in New Zealand but was exported to Australia in September last year and is yet to make his race-day debut.

“The two colts look the same in many ways but this one his legs are different, a bit more bonier. I absolutely love preparing horses for the standardbred sales. The people are a great bunch,” said Archer who also prepares thoroughbreds. Her father is galloping trainer Clarrie Archer while her sister is jockey, Trudy Thornton.

Shane Kirwan of Wibble Holdings said he entered harness racing after “a rush of blood to the head”.It must have been a heady brew because the results have been quietly spectacular. He’s bought well, he’s raced with great success, and soon he’ll know just how good he’ll go at selling.Kirwan will make his debut as a vendor when he offers Master Moonlite on the first day of the Premier. He should command huge interest, being by Art Major from the wonderfully performed Christian Cullen mare, Miss Moonlite, and he’s her first foal.Campaigning twice in Australia, where she won four races, Miss Moonlite handled racing and travelling well. She raced 67 times, won 13 of them and was placed in 27 for earnings of $213,165. At 4, she won the Breeders Crown mares Final, and the season before she ran third in the New Zealand Oaks.“She had ability and was a bit unlucky in some of those big races,” said Shane.Miss Moonlite was trained in Rangiora by Andrew Stuart and Davinia Harrison is doing the preparation, not far from Ashley where Kirwan has a small holding.“The colt is a neat bay, with a bit of white on his forehead, almost identical to his mother.“I like to support the locals,” said Kirwan,

whose key employment is consultancy in the telecommunication industry.“I’ve always had a passing interest in harness racing, but more in the breeding line.”I started off with a half-share in Let’s Go Cullen, a Christian Cullen mare who won three and I’ve bred three from her so far.”The first was Stagger Lee, who was impressive winning on the first day at Nelson, his third win from a handful of starts. He also has a 2-year-old brother (by Motion In Art), a yearling by Shadow Play and she’s been served by Art Major. He bought Miss Moonlite more or less by accident.“I was looking for a foundation mare at the sales and this filly by Christian Cullen from Dancingonmoonlight ($82,044) came into the ring. She was not one I’d picked out to look at, but was going in the 20s and I bought her sight unseen for $25,000 … I didn’t know what to think.”At the same sale, he bought Valour Under Fire, the winner of four races for Robert Dunn and Gavin Smith.Miss Moonlite has since left a filly to Bettor’s Delight and has returned, and Kirwan has leased the unraced Whirlwind Cullen and she’s also been served by Bettor’s Delight.

Hi Brad. Thanks for this and, yes, I’d love to get involved as a “feature breeder”.After another win today in South Australia, with a son of Artsplace, I’m even more enthused.I totally agree with your comments about syndication. We need new blood, but many of our best efforts seem to focus just on existing players. We must look after current participants of all persuasions of course, but without new people, we’re in strife. When I first started corresponding with John, I tossed in some thoughts on how we might help do that. I’ve taken the liberty of copying some text from that early email exchange, started by my respect for John’s article in a Breeding Matters edition. This is taking a risk - it was so long ago, and things may have developed or changed - but it supports my view that syndication, and extending that to breeding, is well worth consideration.“I got my first taste  of “trotting” by being taken to Hutt Park back about 1958. We had a great platform for harness racing there, back in the day, as people like Charlie Hunter had horses in the area, and horses came from north and south, and we got to see many of the best. Cardigan Bay, Geffin, Oreti, Control - just a small number that I recall watching while the mince fell on my pants from the very ordinary pie I was enjoying! I soon moved on to Madras Curry and Rice!My father was a keen punter and correspondent with Best Bets and Friday Flash. Although he was more a galloping man, I got right into harness racing from the intricacies of who drove better, Bob Young or Maurice Holmes, and decided Young was the man for the trotters, but no-one got them off the fence like Maurice.

Today, do kids get that? Do they care? I guess some do, if they grow up in the game. It’s up to us to spread the word, as you say well in your article. Watching Dexter Dunn is a joy, and also Blair Orange or Rickie May, especially when they drive one of ours! Our own children aren’t really racing people, but they and their spouses never miss watching when one of ours is on the track, and they love it. Ditto some of our friends, three of whom now own harness horses (shares of ) because of what they’ve seen from being around me too long. Yep, many positives. The necessary gambling dollar needs continuous work, but attracting more owners/breeders brings more competitive racing and more interested parties, so more gambling.I like the slant on leasing broodmares from people who don’t want them currently, to people who have the urge but not the right mare. Maybe there is also room to sell rather than lease in some circumstances. People do this today, as you say, but we could establish a “service” to facilitate more folks doing it, and promote the whole idea.Another “wild idea”, establish a professional, business approach to encourage new breeders into syndicates. Many (most) small breeders do it as a hobby, and have little idea of budgeting, etc. They do it while they enjoy it and can afford it. I’m suggesting two things really. The development of a business plan aimed at the higher end new participant, and maybe a “financial model” for people to use when considering and planning a breeding venture, however large or small. Help people see what they are getting into and why they can actually do well out of breeding from better quality mares, maybe by the newly-promoted lease arrangement or by participating in a new breeding syndicate.

The Musings of a Breeder

For the last couple of years Kevin Stanley, a New Zealand breeder, now based in Sydney, and John Mooney, Chairman of The Breeders have been exchanging thoughts and ideas on growing our sport. Brad Reid has now joined the

conversation and after Brad congratulated Kevin on his Nelson win with the Mark Jones trained I Get Around, Kevin continued the conversation …

By Kevin Stanley

Kevin enjoying a cold drink with his wife, Linda

Page 58 Breeding Matters

Page 59: Breeding Matters - Yearling Sales Issue 2016

At the higher end of town, coming up with a prospectus for a breeding syndicate must be worth considering. Mares are not expensive today, comparatively. Certain stallions are well established with good average yearling prices. Some farms must be interested in taking a few top mares for such a venture. Doing it well, with paying clients, may make staying inharness racing more attractive than shifting to other “livestock”. New participants might then buy racing stock, and bring others into the sport”.Just fun to look back on the preceding email text…… Brad, I also like the fact your first breeding venture is in a trotter, and that’s where you plan to focus. Bravo! Trotting is a key aspect of our sport that we must promote further, particularly to new players. I have friends who still think pacers are gallopers with their legs tied together. Well, not quite, but almost! It’s much  easier to attract the attention of someone with no knowledge of the sport to a trotter. Pure,  classically stylish, internationally popular, and no gear to get worried about. Once they’re in, they probably can respect the pacer too…...Then there’s the fact that our trotters are not generally world class, while our pacers are. Room for upside and general improvement? You betcha. Most pacing bred youngsters now pace, and most can get to the races, mostly because of breed improvements. Back in the day, many just couldn’t be taught to pace. We worked on the old “truth” that 50% never raced, 50% of those who did, never won a race, and 50% of those never won more than one race. Today the odds are much better, assuming you are talking about  reasonably  well bred animals. If you look at the more “average” bred horse poulation, the odds are probably much as they were. Trotters are getting

that way, slowly. As you allude to, new stallions are making the difference. We (NZ and Victoria - my State of NSW is years behind) have good maternal trotting families. Bring in top USA and European stallion lines, and we can get a lot better a lot faster. Look at Monbet!I bought the last lot at the last Christchurch Sale - a trotting colt by Muscle Mass. He’s a beauty and I doubt I’ll buy another pacer before we have some more trotting stock. The challenge for the trotter, certainly in Australia, is how long you might have to wait to get a yearling purchase, or worse, one you breed, to the races. New sires will help this with earlier going, more natural trotters, as will training and focus as racing becomes more competitive for 2 and 3 year olds trotters. We just have to promote and believe in trotting as a key component of the sport, for the longer term. I’ve recently joined up with a trotting group under the banner of HRNSW, to promote trotting racing and breeding, but I suspect it will be like rearranging the deck chairs unless we get some real top-level support. I remain optimstic. My fellow trotted 2:10 and a quarter in 30 about 3 months ago. He wasn’t even really 2, and he was just playing around. When I got started, even about 10 years ago, that would have won feature 2YO races.Debate will rage about racing young horses, but reality is if you want a successful breeding/selling market, you need 2YO racing for good money, and a broad base of races for those who are not top-draw at that age, but can be comeptitive in good fields.Off to have some dinner and toast our good weekend of racing.

CheersKevin

Since making the move from the beach to Dancingonmoonlight Farm, former Southlander and trainer/driver Gavin Smith has really started to bear the fruits of his labour.Part of that he credits to his team and facilities, but he places just as much emphasis of his improvement in the stock he has in the barn.“It is the nicest group of young horses I have ever had and I am quite excited about a few of them.”“If a couple make the step up, then the stable could be in for some really exciting times,” Gavin said. His emphasis on quality over quantity sees him working a smaller team these days, and you won’t hear Gav or his wife Sara complaining much about that. At time of writing (mid-January), the strike rate for the Smith stable sits at an impressive 13 wins and 15 placings from just 61 starters. Good enough for the fourth best UDR of trainers inside the top 25. He also sits seventh on the driver’s leader board showing his versatility as a horseman is as good as they come. One area Gavin has had recent success sourcing hidden gems is at the PGG Wrightson Yearling Sales.“I generally in the past have had a rough price bracket and haven’t had a lot to spend so I’ll go through the book and pick out the ones I like on pedigree. “I try to look at sort of 80-90% of the yearlings being prepared down here and when I’m with the preparers I’ll ask them if there is anything extra they think I should look at. Quite often there will be something that will slip under the guard that I didn’t have written down on type that they like. “Occasionally I’ll see one walk across the ring or someone will be looking at it on Sales Day and it will catch my eye. A couple of the better ones I have bought have been like that! Two of those were Naughty Maravu (seven wins, five placings) and the very smart three year old filly Scarlett Banner who is being aimed at the Sales Series Final on the 12th of February at Addington. One thing that stands out about the hardworking Southlander is that he isn’t afraid to put his money

where his mouth is come Sales time.“I generally don’t have clients to buy for at the sales, I’ll go and buy them myself and then send some emails out to my client base and see if they are keen to take a share and start to put them together a few months after the sales. “I always look to take a share in the horse myself to show that I stand by what I am selling and I believe that gives my clients some good confidence when going in on a horse with me.”When asked about recent sales purchases showing ability, one in particular stands out.“I have a colt here at the moment I really like called Red Moon Rising, I’m probably not going to push him as a two-year old, but he’s well above average. Great Things Happen was another to go through the ring I liked but that ended up being a buy-back and he’s done a good job so far for me also.”When asked what new sires he is interested in keeping tabs on, Smith was quick to mention Sportswriter as a stallion with a future.“I’m really keen on Sportswriter, I bred one mare to him last year and put two back in foal to him again. They were beautiful types last year, and I’ve got friends in Australia that really like him so I think he’s a good one for the future.”With so much horse flesh going through the ring, and some high price tags being fetched for a lot of them, it’s imperative that first time buyers and even those with experience seek advice from our leading horseman. “Talk to someone whose been there and done that,” said Smith“I’ve made a lot of mistakes in the past when I first started buying. I used vets back then to guide me a little bit but every year you will buy one and think oh I don’t like that or it’s doing this and you pick up little things that you wouldn’t do again. So obviously the longer you’ve been doing it the better you get.The bottom line as Gavin points out. “Don’t be afraid to ask for advice from someone who has been there and done that!”.
