T he Air Ambulance is a rapid responseemergency craft covering 3,000square miles across Nottinghamshire

and Lincolnshire. Travelling at 154 mph it takesapproximately nineteen minutes to travel fromits base at RAF Waddington to the furthestpoint in either of the two counties. It isoperational every day of the week all yearround completing an average of three to fourmissions a day saving many lives across theregion.

The helicopter provides a fast, smooth, efficient journey to hospital, avoiding trafficjams and reaching accident sites which areoften inaccessible to land ambulances. A highproportion of “call outs” are to road trafficaccidents and they average at least five leisureactivity incidents a month.

Speed is essential in the battle to save life andlimb. The patient can be transported to hospitalwithin 7-12 minutes, well within the “GoldenHour” which gives the best possible chance ofmaking a full recovery. There are always twoparamedics on board who are trained tooffer specialised trauma treatmentMany residents of our counties live in isolat-

ed communities, often 45-60 minutes awayby road ambulance from the nearesthospital and have benefited on manyoccasions from the speed of the helicopter.

“We are one of only 18 Air AmbulanceCharities in the country and financially werely heavily on voluntary contributions withthe balance of our income coming from thevaried activities with which we are involved. To ensure that the air ambulance can contin-ue flying across both counties saving manylives each year we need to raise £1.5m eachyear”.

“Volunteers are especially valuable to thecharity. We are always happy to speak toanyone who can give of their time to help uswith our fundraising and this can be as littleor as much as they want it to be”.For further information contact: Lincolnshire & Nottinghamshire Air Ambulance, Unit 2, Chase Park,Daleside Road, Nottingham, NG2 4GTTel: 0115 941 2255

‘In the 1970s Liz Luddy firstdiscovered a dress agency inNewark, loved the idea ofselling nearly-new clothesand accessories at genuinlyaffordable prices and wantedto develop the idea into astylish, guilt-free andenjoyable fashion experience.

In 1993 Liz and her husband Tom, coming from a design background, were able to create Renaissance’s impressive interior with its welcom-ing atmosphere where carefully selected fashions and accessories arepresented using colour co-ordination and extensive displays.

Mindful that customers often experience difficulty in finding whatthey want in dress agencies, there are separate areas for women’sfashion, men’s fashion and younger fashion, within which are sectionsfor designer labels, occasions wear, ‘extra’ fashion and even maternitywear.

Variety and the highest of standards are the watchwords forRenaissance. Items selected are displayed in the shop for just eightweeks, which means, of course, that stock is changing on a daily basis. With the onset of the recession, a record amount of sellers is resulting

in the best stock ever and featuring all the favourite labels such as PaulSmith, Hobbs, Jaeger, Karen Millen, Whistles, Ted Baker, Fat Face,Topshop, Zara. It can be a difficult time, makingimportant decisions about yourchild’s future. Will my daughtercope in a huge school? Will shedisappear in large classes? There is a real alternative. Someparents have never even consid-ered private education; maybeit is time for you to have a look

at a school which helps girls develop their individual strengths andabilities.

“Hollygirt School takes girls of all abilities, not just high fliers. Girls areassessed before they join, so that their educational needs can be met, wherever they are in terms of their ability. In 2009, 92% of Hollygirt girlsachieved 5 or more GCSE A* - C grades (including Maths and English),compared to 47% in Nottinghamshire. However, our girls are not statis-tics. They all make excellent progress and we are proud of their achieve-ments at whatever level. It is the unique environment of a girls’ schoolwith small classes, where everyone knows each other and teachers havethe time to get the best out of each child that really works. Everyone isstretched and girls with difficulties achieve more than they thoughtpossible”.Entry to Hollygirt can be at any time, not just the start of a school year.

Most new girls join without knowing other pupils, but soon makefriends in the warm and homely atmosphere. The quality of care wasrated as outstanding in the school’s last inspection in 2008.

Go along to their next open day on Thursday 13th May with sessions at 11am and 2pm. If youcan’t make it, call them to call in for achat and a look around. Holygirt School, Elm Avenue,Nottingham NG3 1GFTel: 0115 958 0596www.hollygirt.co.uk

breeze through the ages

Pioneering personalities fromNottinghamshire’spast, feature in ‘A Hundred YearsAgo’, a new bookwhich explores theearliest days ofGirlguiding in the

county.

Writtenby localhistori-

an Rowena Edlin-White,‘A Hundred YearsAgo’ adds anotherdimension to theactivities currentlyunderway inNottinghamshire tocelebrate the

centenary of Girlguiding UK. ‘It would makea great memento for anyone connected withus during this special year,’ reflects Dee Miles,County Commissioner of GirlguidingNottinghamshire. ‘The book shows whatenergy and drive these inspirational womenmust have had to establish Guiding inNottinghamshire a century ago, a drivewhich is matched by the enthusiasm that somany girls and young women still have forGuiding today.’

Author Rowena – who confesses that, whilst she was certainly a Brownie in the1950s, she never quite made it to Guides –was asked to write the book following herstudies of Nottingham women of theVictorian and Edwardian eras. She admitsshe was not surprised at encountering somany familiar names during her research forthe new book. ‘Local women like Lady MaudRolleston, who was one of Nottingham’s firstwomen magistrates and Guide Commissionerfor South-West Notts from 1928, crop up inall sorts of contexts,’ Rowena explains. ‘Theywere obviously the real movers and shakersof their day!’

Other key characters highlighted in thebook include Agnes Maude Andrews,Superintendent of the YWCA Institute in1905 and leader of the first Guide Companyto be formed in Nottingham, Lady SibellPierrepont, who was County Commissionerfrom 1916, and the Duchess of Portland

Winifred Cavendish-Bentinck, who becamethe first County president in 1916 and heldthe post until her death in 1954. Many of theearly Guides and Guiders have families still inthe area: Minnie Trease, for example, wholed the 11th Nottingham All Saints unit forover 30 years from 1917 and who has aplaque in the local church commemoratingher long service, has descendants whocontinue to run the family business - WeaversWine & Spirit Merchants - in Nottinghamtoday.

The book looks at Guiding’s first 21 years inNottinghamshire and Rowena’s researcheshave untangled some of the mysterysurrounding the formation of the county’svery first Guide company. This was ‘almostcertainly’ started at the YWCA Institute inLong Row in 1911, and early photographs, documents and newspaper cuttings showthat the movement quickly flourished acrossthe county. Anyone with more recollectionsor souvenirs of pre-war Guiding is invited tocontact the archive office at GirlguidingNottinghamshire headquarters in Carlton.

‘A Hundred Years Ago: The Beginnings ofGirl Guiding in Nottinghamshire’ by RowenaEdlin-White is published by Smallprint forGirlguiding Nottinghamshire with assistancefrom the Jessie Spencer Trust.

From her late teens Kim has always struggled to control her weight. Formany years she has tried every diet on the market, only to result in yo-yo dietingand ending up putting more weight than when she started.Realising that for her health’s sake she had to do something about it. Kim joined

a local slimming club and set about on her journey that would change her life forever in more ways than one. Not only did Kim start to lose weight but shedecided to become a weight loss consultant. She took to this role like a duck towater and soon became very successful as a weight loss consultant. In 2009 Kim decided she wanted more than being a weight loss consultant, she

wanted to learn more about food, nutrition and healthy eating, and furthermore to run her own healthy eating and weight loss business. Kim knows all towell about the practicalities of running her own business as she is already owns asuccessful mobile hairdressing business. She studied very hard on a diet andnutrition course to become a Nutrition Advisor, and in February 2010 all the hardwork paid off as she became a fully qualified Nutrition Advisor.

So with experience and qualifications in place Kim has started her new weight loss and healthy eatingclasses called ‘The Health Weigh’ which start on Tuesday April 13th at Chilwell Memorial Hall. There willbe three classes every Tuesday 9.30-11am 12.30-2pm and 5.30-7pm

Kim says “I am very excited about this new venture, I feel very passionate about helping people withweight problems, and with obesity hitting an all time high I feel that there is a lot of people out there thatneed my help. After all, I know how difficult it is to lose weight and to keep it off. Most people needmotivation and a lot of support and they will certainly get that from me. I also remember how difficult itwas to be able to afford slimming classes each week, especially in today’s financial climate so at £2.50 perweek with no joining fee, I think everyone will agree its a very reasonable and affordable price.

Why not join Kim at her class or telephone 07792 314 869 for more details

“I’ve always been regarded by my family and friends as a bit of a ‘Whizz Kid’ and I am always being asked to setup their TV’s, VCR’s, printers, computers, internet, in fact - pretty much anything with a plug on or batteries! So I decided, why not turn my skills and experience into a full-time business of my own”.Phil wishes to establish and grow a local, friendly and honest business, sharing his expertise with new customers at a fair and reasonable price. He believes it

is important that his new business also tries to cater for the elderly and local student population and offers a generous 10% discount. “I want to help anybody having problems with any piece of technical equipment in their home. Typically, this could be a problem with their computer or they

need help installing and setting up a new piece of electronic equipment they have recently purchased i.e. HD/TV, Wi-Fi, PVR, Freeview, Freesat, DVD, Blu-Ray,Sky, Virgin etc How often do you hear someone say that they hate so many messy wires everywhere and they can’t work out where they all go? Or they haveread the instructions and are still totally confused. Listening to my customers needs, being patient and able to communicate with them at their level of techni-cal understanding are my key strengths. It is important not to blind anybody with science and technical jargon”!

B road-leaved cannas,hostas, deep orangedahlias, fiery crocos-

mias and tender bulbs such asgloriosa will all add heat to the scene, whileplants of architectural interest such as Fatsiajaponica, palms, cordyline and phormium canall add to that tropical feel.

Put sun-loving palms and succulents in thehottest spots, and position shade-tolerantplants, such as hostas, beneath the canopiesof large-leaved plants.

It will be too late now to grow your tropicalspecimens from scratch, but you'll be able tofind them in garden centres and nurseries.Remember, though, that some of your plantssuch as cannas and bananas are tender andwill need extra care to overwinter them.Tropical styles tend to look best in urbansituations and work well with modernfurniture and accessories.

Remember, with exotic schemes theemphasis is on the bold plants, not the pots.So don't use elaborate, brightly-coloured potsfor an exotic effect, and avoid anything greenin the background, such as a lawn, so that all

the leaves are clearly visible.Good backdrops include: Trachycarpus

wagnerianus, a neater version of the Chusanpalm ('T. fortunei'), with smaller, stiffer leaves, able to withstand a windy sight; orChamaerops humilis, a slow-growing dwarffan palm which comes from southern Europebut is happy in colder areas.

Tropical scenes need careful, sparing use ofreally vibrant colour. Red hot pokers(Kniphofia), ginger lilies (Hedychium) andcannas can provide this.

Good varieties include 'C. striata', which has45cm (18in) paddle-shaped, green and yellowstriped leaves and produces sizzling orangeflowers in midsummer. The rich orange flowersand variegated leaves of 'C. pretoria' create anexotic feel and another good choice is 'C.president', which produces scarlet blooms, orthe golden yellow 'King Midas'. Cannas needloads of humus in the soil and do well in largepots in a sheltered, sunny spot.

Alternatively, go for small pots of sizzlingscarlet geraniums placed in front of the largerfoliage plants.

If you're not going away this year, you might like to introduce an exotic

corner to your patio.

Vibrant ornamental grasses can also beused in tropical schemes such as Imperatacylindrica 'Rubra', which makes a clump ofbright green leaves whose tips turn bloodred and then the rest of the leaves followsuit, reddening almost to the base. Fluffysilvery-white flowers appear late in thesummer. This one needs fertile, moist soilrich in humus and should be placed in fullsun or part shade. You'll need to mulch it inwinter if it is to survive.

Try to keep each pot reasonably simple, giving stand-alone space to foliagespecimens such as hostas and palms. Placeyour architectural plants such as cannas, cordylines or phormiums in the middle ofthe pot and fill the gaps in front with smallerflowering plants to complement.

Then, on those hot summer days whenyou're sitting on your patio, you'll feel likeyou could be a million miles away.

Best of the bunch - LupinNo mixed border should be without lupins, with their impressive spires of flowers in avariety of colours. There are many varietiesof Russell Hybrids - tall ones to stick towardsthe back of the border, or smaller types tobe used as fillers. They are easy to growfrom seed and will thrive in sun or partialshade, flowering in June, but protect youngplants from slugs, which love them. Thebigger types will need staking in exposedgardens in rich soil. Deadhead them oncethey have flowered to encourage a secondflush of flowers.

Lupins have a relatively short floweringperiod, so plant the tall ones at the back ofthe border with Japanese anemones to hidethe fading foliage. Smaller varieties, such as'Gallery Series', can be planted betweenshrubs and evergreen ground cover. Goodtall varieties include the Band of Noblesseries, while if you want a dwarf variety lookout for 'Gallery Series' and 'Lulu', both ofwhich are a mixture of colours.

Good enough to eat - Keep peas pest-freeIf your peas are in flower now, they are atrisk from pea moth, which lays its eggs onpea flowers in June and July. You won'tnotice them until you open the pods to startshelling your peas and find that one or moreof them have been attacked by a smallwhite grub, which is usually still inside thepod. To avoid pea moth, make early sowingsof peas which flower in May and early June,or later sowings which flower after July.Alternatively, grow mangetout, which ispicked before the peas have developed.Pea and bean weevils can also be a problemearlier on in spring, nibbling notches out ofyoung leaves, however they don't generallycause serious harm and will not needcontrolling.

If you have gaps in your rows of peas itmay be due to mice. Start peas off in pots orsow extra seeds to fill the gaps later.

£715 was raised for the Rainbow Children's Hospiceafter a good result with a ‘Grease’ fundraiserorganised in part by Penny Johnstone.Hiring the cinema at Long Eaton, the group charged

everyone £12 a ticket, which covered the cinema hire, lucky ticket draw and a drink after the film. They alsolaid on lasagne and french bread afterwards so it wasa great social event as well. They also ran a rafflewhich contributed to the total raised.

The cinema at Long Eaton has just been refurbishedand makes an ideal venue for an event like this saysthe group. In February they ‘did’ Mama Mia andraised sponsorship from local shops as well which meant they were able to give TreetopsHospice £1120.“We all had loads of fun dressing up for both films, and we sang along and danced in theaisles to the superb scores - a good time was had by all!” This is a great venue for an event like this - any group of people could run something like it -- just needs someone with a bit of get-up-and-go to co-ordinate it!
