March Birthdays
2013 Distinctive Communicator Awards
Each year the USPS Commnications Committee reviews publications and websites
and considers organizations for the Distinctive Communicator Award. Criteria for
this award can be found on the national website and they are different for each cat-
egory; publications and websites. Those districts and squadrons recognized in either
or both categories reflect an effort that meets or exceeds these criteria and all
members of each district and squadron who supported these efforts are to be con-
gratulated for their work and dedication throughout the year. Their efforts not only
serve to inform their membership but also other USPS members and, of course,
members of the public. It goes without saying that every member of each district
and squadron so recognized should feel proud of their organization's accomplish-
ments.
Toledo has received both awards.

TSPS Members,
“THANK YOU” to all of you who were able to attend the Change of Watch. There were 67
adults and 2 children. I hope I didn’t miss greeting everyone at some point. It turned out the
weather cooperated and everyone had safe road conditions. The food was delicious, good
service, and lots of great conversation. I did get one complaint. D/C Larry Cole was at the last
table to be served and the last person to get served. OOPS! Guess I’ll be paying for that one all
year. HA! HA! I had a great team of people to help make it a perfect day for me. Thank you
again Felicia and Nelson Evans, Clyde Shaulis, Mary Jo Price, Bob Hardesty, Larry Cole, JoAnn
and Charlie Scott, and Jean Balogh. Our newly elected secretary, Lt/C Joyce Mease, was kind
enough to be the photographer and write the news article for The Toledo Blade. They are always
there to help and answer questions for any squadron member.
As your new Commander and the new Bridge in place were off to a great start. The new year
will be starting with the February 4th meeting being held at Jolly Roger Sail Club. Shirley
Zawodni will head the program for Founders Day. Next is the winter rendezvous at South
Haven, MI. I understand the Inn is full and we will have more accommodations at an Inn next
door. How wonderful. There is still time to make reservations. For information contact Jan
Leutz, 419-841-6979. Lt/C Chris Hoover has been hard at work getting classes and teachers set
for the 2014 year. Watch the Breeze for up coming rendezvous and class schedules.
Can you believe all the snow we have had. I think the weather is trying to make up lack of
snow from last winter. The arctic temperatures, 29 inches plus of snow, and wind for the month
of January have been relentless. Buurrrrr!!! If we were ever looking forward to Spring and the
boating season this has been one of those winters. Not much longer to wait and Spring will be
here. In the mean time stay warm and looking forward to seeing you at Founder’s Day, February
4th, meeting.

Administrative Officer’s Report The deep freeze of January is hardly conducive to writing about our first meeting in March which will be held at Toledo Yacht Club with Mark Markey, outdoor edi-tor of the Blade, as our speaker. But just knowing that warmer days are ahead and we again will be enjoying nature on the Great Lakes brings us out of our den to roar at the ice and cold. We are looking forward to a delightful evening with Matt Markey and hope for a great turnout to greet him. Our buffet menu is hearty so bring your appetite.
Again, contacting me for your reservations: If by computer: [email protected] If by cell phone: 419-304-1118 If by land line: 419-382-3456 (ask for JoAnn Scott)
I successfully survived a year as Administrative Officer with a lot of help from my
wife Barb. I am now 'promoted' to Executive Officer. Unfortunately no one ran
against me so you are stuck with me again.
I want to thank everyone involved in the Christmas party again. That is sort of a last
hurrah to bring the year and the AO job to a close. I also want to thank the almost
80 people who showed up for the party. We would have been over 80 but for a cou-
ple of no shows due to illness or other issues. That is to be expected I suppose as
not everyone stays healthy. Without you people in attendance the party doesn't
come off. In addition to a really good dinner, we had lots of nice prizes for people to try and win. Despite the fact I
left almost empty handed I am not starting any rumors the bidding was rigged. Darn!
JoAnn Scott is the new AO and has Founders Day scheduled for the February meeting at Jolly Roger Sailing Club. A
roast beef dinner is on the menu which I will unfortunately miss as we will be in a warmer climate working on our
tan during that time.
For those of you who were on committees last year I will be contacting you about this year. If you have any ideas
on someone who might want to serve or would be good please let me know. Last year I tried to get a few fresh fac-
es on committees.
Now that I am not responsible technically for the whole calendar of events and specifically the monthly general
meetings I will be scratching for ideas for articles. Maybe by mid year I will have it figured out. So watch out for
those monthly meetings and speakers and consider taking a course Chris Hoover is overseeing or volunteer in one.
In the interim I will try to figure out where to have the next Change of Watch.

A Mouse In The House…
When we depart for a summer of boating I always leave the house clean and tidy, no food or plants are left behind and everything is shut off including most of the electrical items which are unplugged (due to possible lightening strikes). The first thing we take off and bring home after our trip is our cat, Dolly, then comes the food, clothes, and sacks of mail. The house becomes an upheaval of piles and mystery bags of stuff to be sorted, cleaned, and put away, the tidy home is long gone. It was during this time, when I went to put some items in the bathroom; I noticed there was about ten feet of toilet tissue neatly piled beneath the dispenser on the floor. For some odd reason I went upstairs and checked the other bathroom only to find the same strange pile of tissue neatly on the floor yet still con-nected to the roll. Upon closer examination I noticed tiny little holes running down the middle of the tissue. I thought our cat had taken up a new hobby but a second examination found that the area around these little perfora-tions could not have been done by her.
That evening Phil called me into our den and putting a finger to his mouth, motioned me to be quiet. He showed me the opened bi-fold closet doors; on the floor sat our cat looking up to the top of the door between the two-hinged sections. I carefully looked and saw a mouse tail dangling down from the top of the door panel. Our cat was like a pointer staring at this mouse with amazing intensity, she would not move or become distracted. My idea was to get a tall waste paper basket and knock the mouse into it. Then dumping it outside, a good distance from the house. But no, the mouse jumped into the closest and disappeared into all our belongings. We were not going to unload the closet just to lose this little critter in, what would be, another mess. Instead we just walked away knowing our cat was ready and willing to do her duty.
After unloading, what seemed like a ton of stuff into the living room, we had a quick meal and went to bed. Our bedroom is quite dark but after a while your eyes do get accustomed to it and can pick up on the ambient light from the alarm clock. Around 03:00 A.M. I felt the cat jump on our bed and begin to climb up on my chest. I opened my eyes and saw Dolly standing with her front feet on me, seeing her profile clearly. There she was holding a mouse by the scruff of its neck, meanwhile the beastie was still alive and moving.
I was shocked and amazed, then my natural reflexes finally kicked in. “EEYOUU!!!”, I shrieked and threw off the co-vers. My cat was thrown one way and the mouse went the other, everyone scampered away including me. Then Phil woke up and asked what was wrong.
The following morning we wondered about the mouse and if we should set some traps. Phil found that it would not be necessary, Dolly proved diligent in her job as he discovered an expired mouse by her food bowl. I figured this mouse probably snuck in while we were bringing in our bags. The good thing was that there was no more mouse in the house; while the best thing was our cat never did that little nighttime surprise thing again.

Household Hints for the Boat…
One of the things that drives me crazy is tracking dirt and grit into the boat, especially while in storage. We winter our sailboat indoors and the floor is concrete but outside the ground is gravel. If the ground is wet you track this grit into the building on your tires or shoes. Here is a simple solution, put a scrap piece of carpet or throw rug down at the base of your ladder. This stops 95% of the dirt that just loves to chew into your wood and Gel-Coat…and it works for me.
