Family Day – The Treaty of New Echota: Prelude to the Trail of TearsNortheast Georgia History Center. The Treaty of New Echota, ratified by the U.S. Senate in 1836, sealed the fate of the Cherokee in Georgia – enabling the process that began with the Removal Act and that ended with the infamous Trail of Tears. Though recognized by the United States, the treaty was negotiated and signed by a minority faction of Cherokee leadership – resulting in internal conflict among the Cherokee, which only made the Trail of Tears more bitter. Come experience both Cherokee and Georgia pioneer culture

and daily life in coexistence and conflict with Museum Theatre performances, hands-on activities, living history

interpretation and demonstrations. Free and open to the public. Information: 770.297.5900 or [email protected]

B renau has one of the finest art collections housed in a private university in the

Southeast. There are currently more than 6,000 works in the Brenau University Permanent Collection, which include paintings, drawings, sculptures and textiles, among other things.

The art collection was inaugurated in 1986 by the eighth university president, Dr. John S. Burd.

He reached out to art dealers, collectors, artists and patrons for donations, and the collection steadily grew. The first donation, a piece by renowned American artist William Merritt Chase, set the stage for the caliber of work that would be donated to Brenau over the following years.

Brenau University has since then established three galleries on the main campus that host

rotating exhibitions throughout the year. A fourth gallery within the Brenau University Downtown Center, the Manhattan Gallery, opened in 2014 to serve as a space that merged the arts and sciences. A number of pieces from the Permanent Collection can be seen there, including works by Robert Rauschenberg, Helen Frankenthaler, Andy Warhol and other renowned artists who lived or worked in New York.

The Manhattan Gallery may be viewed during business hours for the Downtown Center, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m to 5 p.m. For more information, call 770.534.6263.
