How does her fathers murder change her life?Having grown up in a small town on the north shore of LakeSuperior, creating a fictional town in the heart of Minnesotabecame the perfect vehicle for a story of murder in the dead ofwinter. I wanted readers to feel the bone-chilling cold and thecreeping fear along with Maja Cleary as she left the safety of herhome in Ottawa to unravel her fathers murder. The frigid settingfit perfectly with the subject matter a narcissist and thedestruction they wreak on their family, even years after thechildren have grown and moved away.
The idea of a flawed parent came following brushes withnarcissistic colleagues in the workplace, seminars by experts in thefield of personality disorders and research into this disturbing yetstrangely fascinating field of psychology. The idea was not to tellthe story of a flawed individual so much as to delve intothe psyches of those left in their wake.
Is Maja based on anyone in particular?
No, but I think she encapsulates all women who are getting olderand starting to question where they are in life, and regrettingthat theyve given up on their dreams and belief in themselves.Ive known many women grappling with the same issues asMaja that is with the exception of solving murders!
How does the Minnesota setting fit into the murder mystery? The setting is almost another character in the book the dark, frigid landscape, unrelenting snow, battering winds all anchoredby the stark beauty of Lake Superior. Winter in Northern
Minnesota proved to be the perfect vehicle for building suspenseand racheting up the fear factor.

als and, to deepen the chill, witness two savage murders.Brenda Chapman's "In Winter's Grip" has

"In Winters Grip by Brenda Chapman sent more than one chill through me. She so perfectly captures
winter, in reality and metaphorically. The bitterness, the harshness, the yearning for home and warmth
and love. And all wrapped in a terrific mystery. Wear a sweater, set the fireplace, brew a cup of tea and
enjoy this book."
-Louise Penny, author of Bury the Dead
"Brenda Chapman has created a taut and atmospheric tale
suitably set against a wintry Minnesota landscape. The reader
is drawn to the gutsy conflicted protagonist, and held captiveby the complex and intriguing family dynamic and the
dangerous fog of secrets. I couldn't put it down."
-Mary Jane Maffini, author of Closet Confidential
