LOCAL CHAMPION CHOSEN AGAIN AS

BRENDA’S SET FOR BATTLE AGAIN !

Brenda lives in the centre of our ward, beside Fawdon Metro, and isvery well known to many local people and groups for her tireless workas a councillor for this area over the past twelve years, and in an earlier

spell in the 1980s.Brenda speaks her mind and always puts the interests of residents of

Fawdon, Red House Farm, Little Grange, Coxlodge and North Kenton

The state of our neighbourhoods is getting worse - grassed areasovergrown, roads and pavements in poor repair - and litter everywhere.

Councillor Brenda Hindmarsh says "Labour say that decentneighbourhoods are a priority - what a sad joke that is! Nothing has beencut more by Labour than the neighbourhood cleansing teams that the Lib

Dems invested in when we ran the Council".

BRENDA SAYS - IT’S TIME FOR LABOUR TO BE HELDTO ACCOUNT FOR NEIGHBOURHOOD LITTER

The Lib Dems in this ward have been working with local residents toclean up North Kenton Park - but when the council won't even do itsbasic job to empty litter bins (as shown here by Fawdon shopping

centre) then it's a losing battle. "People are saying that Labour aren't up tothe job - what are we paying our council tax for?" says Brenda.

“NO COLD CALLING” ON LITTLE GRANGENo councillor in Newcastle has been as active as Brendain pushing the “No Cold Calling” campaign. Lea GreenCourt in Coxlodge was one of the first areas in the city

covered, followed by parts of North Kenton, Red HouseFarm, Fawdon - and now Little Grange to come.

“Evidence shows that the signage in the streets anddisplayed in windows by residents is a deterrent to thispractice, which is a worry and inconvenience to many

people, especially the elderly” says Brenda.

The long-promised car parkto relieve pressure on AlnAvenue and Shaftoe and

Ewart Courts, fought for byBrenda alongside theResidents Association

in Little Grange, is underway at last!

Working with the North Kenton Tenants and Residents Association (TARA) andthe sports centre, your Lib Dem councillors David Faulkner and Brenda Hindmarshhave been closely involved with a park community litter pick day, the painting of

park benches, and the clearance of overgrown bushes (see right) where youths usedto gather, making for better and safer sightlines.

Brenda had previously campaigned for the two play areas - including replacementplay equipment, recently installed. Your councillors have also obtained new ward

grants for a bike shed and a wildife garden outside the sports centre, and equipmentfor the TARA’s local clean-up and conservation volunteers.

ACTION TO IMPROVE NORTH KENTON PARK

YOUR CANDIDATE FOR FAWDON WARD

First. She’s available at all times, and isn’t afraid to get stuck in to challenge council neglect, waste and inefficiency when it’s called for, but she’s respected for being open and forthright.

An “old battleaxe”, someone called her recently - less of the ‘old’ says Brenda !

The police and wardens have been alerted by us about a recent rise in anti-social behaviour in the park.New, larger litter bins are also due soon in the park but they need to be emptied regularly.

We were grateful for the mention and thanks of the TARA in their annual report for“taking the time to attend our meetings and support issues raised by the group” (no mention

of Labour because everyone says that they’re not seen much here.)

BRENDA HINDMARSH has been chosen again asLiberal Democrat Candidate for Fawdon Ward in the

local elections on May 5th

The work goes on all year round !The Environment Agency is to work in partnership with local charity

Groundwork, Northumbrian Water and the council between now and summerto identify projects to improve the full length of the Ouseburn. It says that thebenefits might include “improved water quality, improved river and surface

water management, improved wildife habitat and better amenity value for localpeople”. Residents of Red House Farm will be particularly interested and we

invite ideas to be sent to [email protected]

Your local Lib Dem team has been carrying out street surveys over the pastfew months in different parts of the ward. Recently we were in the newHazel Walk estate in North Kenton between Carsdale Road, HazledeneAvenue and the A1 Western Bypass. Like many of the residents we are

unhappy with the finishing of the estate. It still has to be “adopted” by the City Council as there is much work yet to

be done – uneven roads and pavements, rubble left, the promised greenarea in the centre of the estate not delivered.

Residents also tell us that they suffer from a lot of litter – much worse since the closure of the cut between RedlandAvenue and the path to the bridge/ Tesco, as is the noise and low-level anti-social behaviour. £150,000 was divertedfrom North Kenton Park to the “western corridor” for landscaping but we don’t think it’s good value for money andnot finished either (see photo above) We are raising these issues with Barratts and with the Council. Brenda asks:

“Perhaps a residents’ action group might help with progress? Let us know if you would join it”.

HAZEL WALK ESTATE NEEDS TO BE FINISHED PROPERLY

Local Liberal Democrats have chosen Gateshead Councillor Dr Jonathan Wallace to betheir candidate for Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for the Northumbria force.PCCs were created to oversee police services. Only one in six people voted in the first elections in2012 - the next is on May 5. Labour’s PCC has been invisible in many areas of the Northumbria

force and Dr Wallace aims to be active and visible in local communities if he wins in May.“As a Lib Dem PCC, I will work to ensure we get the best deal for Northumbria Police,” saidJonathan “and with a special focus on neighbourhood policing which seems less of a priority forLabour these days The truth is that we could save a great deal of money by scrapping PCCs and

using the money to employ more police in our local communities”

Or drop in any 2nd or 4th Tuesday, 5.30-6.30pm, St Mary’s, Mapledene Rd, Fawdon.

Jonathan for PCC

In addition to the projects supported in North Kenton and Little Grange, mentioned overleaf, over recent months Brenda and Davidhave supported these projects through Ward Committee funding: * Pathway to the green re-laid for Gosforth Empire Bowling Club(Coxlodge) * Recreational activity programme for North Kenton Veterans Club * “Play in Newcastle” junior youth club sessions inFawdon and North Kenton *Cutting back of overgrown vegetation in Ancroft Way, Red House Farm * Bedding plants, vegetablestarter growing kits and other stock for the shop at Coxlodge Allotments * Sports Sessions to be run by the organisation “Hat Trick”for young people around the ward * Replacement of damaged and missing litter bins in Little Grange, Fawdon and Red House Farm

* New table tennis table at Fawdon Community Centre * Planters for Lea Green Court, Coxlodge and in Little Grange

We’ve had the dangerous and unsightlysurfacing replaced but what now? It’s time forsome new thinking. Contact us and tell us what

you think should happen. Would you join apark clean-up and development group?

For several months now we have been trying to get to the bottom ofcomplaints about unpleasant odours in the area which it is thoughtcome from the Crown Packaging plant on Edgefield Avenue.

Councillor David Faulkner alerted the Council’s SeniorEnvironmental Health Officer who has advised residents to keep

monitoring diaries and has been regularly in touch with the company. They say that they have had faults on certain production lines which

could cause odours, and they promised a full investigation and responseby the beginning of March - but we haven’t seen it yet. Recently thesmell was detectable as far away as Red House Farm South andGrange First School on Wansbeck Road. It’s not good enough - we

need it sorted out now. Contact [email protected] if youhave any information to give.
