Assistant Professor, Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science Department Rice University, July 1, 2005 - present

Education

University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign

Ph.D. Mechanical Engineering 2005 Dissertation: Multi-scale Model of the Stability of a Laterally Heated Liquid Bridge

under the Influence of an Axial Magnetic Field

M.S. Mechanical Engineering 2001 Thesis: Numerical Study of the Linear Stability of Flows Related to Float-zone

Crystal Growth Processing in Microgravity with and without an Applied Magnetic Field

B.S. Mechanical Engineering 2000 (with honors)

Course Development/Enhancement

Mech 200 (Classical Thermodynamics) Implemented TEST: The Expert System for Thermodynamics (thermofluids.net) from SDSU. Collaborated in Bucknell study in misconceptions in thermodynamics. Arranged for guided tours of new chilled water plant. Mech 407/408 (Capstone Design) Added modules on technology transfer, business planning and Engineering Economics (covered on the FE Exam) to Mech 407 – 408 (Capstone Senior Design). The interdisciplinary nature of the course was enhanced by planning projects that incorporate BIOE’s, ELEC’s and CEVE’s on design teams. In collaboration with Dr. Fathi Ghorbel and Schlumberger, teams also collaborated with French engineering students in Paris, France. The visibility of the department will be increased via a poster presentation session in the spring of 2008. Representatives from industry, academia and government agencies will be invited to attend the poster session.

Mech 372, 473/573 Assisted in combining Mech 372 (Fluid Mechanics II) and Mech 573 (Advanced Fluid Mechanics I) into a cross-listed course Mech 473/573 (Advanced Fluid Mechanics I) to replace the previously mentioned courses. It is envisioned that Mech 473/573 will be offered in the spring, beginning in spring 2008. This restructuring places Mech 473/573 at the proper level, consistent with other cross-listed courses, and in-line with the requirements of the ABET and SACS accreditation agencies. It also improves the efficiency of the department’s teaching load, while offering both a graduate and undergraduate level course regularly. This course had not been taught at the graduate level for several years prior to 2006. Mech 574 Reinstated Mech 574 (Advanced Fluid Mechanic II) in the Fall of 2008. This critical graduate fluid mechanics course cover topics such as inviscid flow, inviscid and viscous stability theory, transition and isotropic turbulence. Examples including magnetohydrodynamic stirring and damping are introduced from my research. This class had not been taught for more than four years previously.
