Brentwood Town Ladies FC was formed in 1999

following the merger of Brentwood Ursuline FC

and Brentwood Girls FC. The Ursuline Convent

High School had been running teams in the

town since 1991 and by 1998/9 had entered

three teams into the Essex County Girls League

whilst Brentwood Boys had also launched a

girls’ team in 1997.

By the spring of 1999, Brentwood Ursuline had

decided that the school could no longer support

football's rapid growth and the decision was taken to

form an independent club which also took on board

the girls' team from Brentwood Boys for the best

interests of female football in the area.

The focus has now moved to a successful Ladies side,

who compete in the Eastern Region Women's

Football League (ERWFL) having claimed successive

promotions from the Essex County Women's League

in 2003 and 2004.

Having finished fifth in their first season, 2005/6 saw

Brentwood reach the play-off finals as they pushed

for promotion from Division One East. Town could not

quite reach the top tier, and subsequent seasons

saw the club narrowly miss out again having been

placed fourth in 2007 and then third in consecutive

campaigns within the newly-realigned Division One

South.

There was some success in 2008 as the Ladies won

their first major trophy, scooping the ERWFL Plate

Competition courtesy of a 4-1 victory over Kings

Sports, as well as consecutive runs to the Third

Qualifying Round of the FA Women’s Cup.

After the departure of coach Kevin Anderson at the

end of the 2008/9 campaign, 2009/10 dawned with

a new management team in place, headed by Ian

Bent. Ably assisted by David Worsfold and Lucy

Faraday in his backroom team, Bent tasted success

at the end of his first term in charge as Blues finally

claimed that elusive promotion spot, completing the

campaign as runners-up to Arlesey Town.

2010/11 now sees the Club competing in the ERWFL

Premier Division for the first time in their history.

welcome Welcome to this afternoon’s match

against Tottenham Hotspur. We hope

that the visiting players, coaches and

supporters enjoy their visit to Essex

today.

We have now reached the halfway stage

of our first season in the Premier Division of

the Eastern Region Women’s Football

League and to sit second in the table and

only a point of the top spot is a fantastic

start. The way in which everyone

connected to the club, but especially the

players, have approached the season, and

the effort and spirit on display each week,

has been there for all to see. We must all

now focus on our aim to be just as

competitive in the second half of the

season.

Today’s game sees us take on a strong

Tottenham Hotspur side who are also going

well in their league. We met each other in a

very competitive pre-season friendly back

in August and anyone who watched the

game that night and some of the football

produced by both teams would not be

surprised to see how well both clubs have

started in their respective leagues.

The game that evening was a real test for

us and we learnt a lot that night which has

stood us in good stead this season.

Hopefully this afternoon’s game will be

equally entertaining and will give us an

opportunity to see the progress we have

made over the last three months, and we’ll

be giving it our best.

Finally I would like to say a massive

thank-you to everyone attending today’s

game and supporting the girls. It means a

lot to everyone at the club and I hope you

all enjoy your afternoon with us. May the

best team win.

Enjoy the match!

match report

Brentwood Town dug in to earn a

place in the Third Qualifying Round of

the FA Women’s Cup sponsored by

E.On with a 3-2 victory away to local

rivals Hutton courtesy of an injury-time

winner from Nikita Whinnett.

At times Blues failed to match the high

standards of previous games in 2010/11 but

they displayed a lot of guts and

determination to overcome a spirited

Hutton side that refused to lay down

despite trailing twice, to strikes from Carla

Rose and Whinnett in the first half.

“We weren’t at our best today, and it’s

probably as poorly as we have played all

season, but everyone kept going and got

the result to put us in the next round. A sign

of a good team is winning when you are

not at your best, and we did that today, so

credit to the players for that,” reflected

manager Ian Bent.

Club captain Rose put her side in front just

54 seconds into the game after a high

clearance was contested by Whinnett in

midfield. The forward’s presence was

enough to put off Nina Witteridge and the

loose ball fell to Rose, who skilfully rounded

Emma Cansell before driving her seventh

goal of the season underneath goalkeeper

Melanie Kinsella.

The lead lasted just five minutes as the

previously-unbeaten Eastern Region

Women’s Football League Division One

South side equalised from a set-piece. A

free-kick was conceded 25 yards out and

Nicole Farmer strode up from the back to

float the ball over Izzy Vian and into the net.

The match became scrappy as Hutton

pressurised the ball, and Brentwood

struggled to gain any real momentum,

leading to opportunities for the hosts’ Amy

Simmons and Lucy Hudson, who was twice

thwarted by Vian.

As the half went on, there were signs that

Town were beginning to become more

fluent and Whinnett took full advantage of

her first clear-cut opportunity to restore the

visitors’ lead two minutes before half-time.

Leah Cowan slid the ball down the

inside-left channel and the 19-year-old

sprinted away to angle her shot underneath

Kinsella from eight yards out.

Hutton levelled in the 48th minute when

Dannielle Cliffe out-muscled Nikki Allen

before stroking the ball past Vian into the

bottom right-hand corner, and shortly

afterwards Laura Allen saw an effort ruled

out for offside.

The match had entered the third minute of

stoppage time when Whinnett delivered

the decisive blow. Lovell won the ball

courageously in the centre of the park

before continuing her run to latch onto

Rose’s return pass. The defender then

threaded the ball through to Whinnett, who

made no mistake in clinically rifling her shot

into the top left-hand corner to spark

scenes of glee.

Hutton’s Allen was later dismissed for a

second bookable offence, leaving Blues to

claim their ninth victory in twelve matches.

match report

Brentwood Town Ladies extended their

unbeaten run to thirteen matches with

a 1-0 win over Arlesey Town at the

Society of Old Brentwoods as Sophie

Lovell’s second half penalty proved the

difference between the two teams.

This was a contrasting clash to the open

encounter on the first day of the 2010/11

season when Blues fell to their only defeat

of the term so far against Arlesey at the

aRMadillo Stadium. Opportunities were at a

premium throughout, which made Lovell’s

clinically-dispatched spot-kick nine minutes

into the second period even more impor-

tant.

“Today’s victory was all down to hard work

with plenty of guts to accompany an

excellent defensive display from the whole

team,” declared manager Ian Bent. “We

defended superbly throughout and limited

Arlesey to one clear-cut chance and a few

long-range efforts all game, which was very

pleasing.”

Brentwood threatened first when Jess

Tuffen’s left-wing throw was laid into the

path of Nikita Whinnett by Lucy Faraday

and the 19-year-old forward smashed a

snap-shot narrowly wide of the left-hand

upright.

Arlesey’s first opening was probably their

best of the entire match as the prolific

Katerina Hamplova wasted a fine

opportunity in the 16th minute, firing over

when Brentwood failed to clear Sarah

Tayler’s cross.

With the visitors enjoying the bulk of

possession, the half ended with Izzy Vian on

top form, producing an excellent save at

full stretch to her right to palm away Mandy

Cain’s goalbound effort, and then Nicole

Manning executing a perfectly-timed sliding

tackle on Hamplova on the right-hand side

of the penalty area.

The second half began in a similar vein as

Tayler almost scored when her 30-yard shot

from the right flank connected with the

outside of the post, but Brentwood

changed the course of the fixture when

they edged in front four minutes later.

Lucy Faraday’s corner kick was only

cleared as far as Manning just inside the

penalty area and, with her back to goal,

she was sent tumbling to the ground,

leaving the referee no choice but to point

to the spot. Lovell stepped up and drove

her second successful penalty of the season

past Becki Scott to make it 1-0.

From that point on, in a close fixture, Blues

always seemed the more likely to score,

despite Tayler again being thwarted by

Vian as the ‘keeper tipped her outlandish

35-yard free-kick over the crossbar.

Substitute Keeley Walker chipped over after

Faraday’s corner was pushed into her path,

and Whinnett was unlucky when Amie

Meager got the faintest of touches to

Lynch’s centre to deny her a simple tap-in.

The final move of the match was arguably

the best, Faraday sweeping the ball into the

path of Whinnett, who saw Scott parry her

20-yard shot out. Walker retrieved the ball

on the right to set up Whinnett again, but

Scott this time tipped another strong shot

into the side-netting, but that could not

deny Blues their seventh League win.

THIRD ROUND

Brentwood Town Ladies have been

drawn to face Peterborough at home

in the Eastern Region Women's Football

League Cup Third Round.

The fixture, which will take place at the

Society of Old Brentwoods on Sunday 5th

December, is a reverse of the Second

Round encounter between the two clubs

last season, which 'Boro won 8-3.

However, the tables were turned when the

sides met in the second ERWFL Premier

Division fixture of the current campaign as

Nikita Whinnett's hat-trick, plus a further

strike from midfielder Lucy Faraday, saw

Blues prevail 4-0 at Alconbury FC.

The match is the only tie of the Third Round,

with the remaining ten Premier Division

clubs plus Second Round winners Billericay

Town, Fakenham Town, Hutton, Norwich

City Reserves and Whitwell receiving byes

into the Fourth Round, which takes place on

Sunday 23rd January 2011.

erwfl review Hethersett Athletic retained their

leadership of the Eastern Region

Women’s Football League Premier

Division at the halfway stage of the

campaign.

The day’s fixtures represented a reverse of

the opening day matches, when the

Norfolk club had been pegged back from

3-0 up to draw 3-3 with Chelmsford City in

Wroxham. This time around, Hethersett

claimed all three points as Grace Birchall’s

double - taking her season’s League tally to

nine - earned them a 2-1 victory over the

Clarets. Helen Alder netted City’s goal.

Brentwood moved up into second spot in

the table after their 1-0 win over Arlesey

Town when Barking, who had previously

headed Blues on goal difference, lost 4-1 at

fellow promotion contenders Bedford.

The result meant that Bedford leapfrogged

the metropolitan Essex side into third spot,

two points behind Brentwood. Again there

were a multitude of scorers for the hosts as

Zara Carroll, Vicky Vickery, Sarah Saunders

and Natasha Fensome found the net, whilst

in-form Anna Ojei-Agwaziam scored for the

visitors to the Carlsberg Stadium.

Peterborough moved up into fifth place as

they recorded a 2-0 success at Stevenage

Borough, with their goals coming from

Lesley-Ann Seaman and Jade Bell.

The only other fixture to take place saw

Kettering Town extend the distance

between themselves and the relegation

zone with an impressive 3-0 success at

Haringey Borough, who remain above

Cambridge University only on goal

difference. The Poppies’ win at Coles Park

was secured thanks to efforts from Naomi

Dwane, Emma Dunmore and Simone Cook.

There was scheduled to be a further fixture

at the bottom of the table as Woodbridge

Town prepared to host Cambridge

University, but the clash was postponed

after the Scholars fell foul of a Breach of

League Rule 5 (i) pertaining to the

non-payment of League fines. The

suspension has subsequently been lifted.

CLUB HISTORY

The club was formed in 1985 as Broxbourne Ladies by the

late Sue Sharples and Kay Lovelock after the East Herts

College team folded. For the 1991/92 season, the team got

permission granted for the name Tottenham Hotspur to be

used and at the start of the 1992/93 season a reserve side

was added to the senior side.

Spurs were winners of the Greater London League Cup in

1995/96, having been runners-up in their first knockout final,

the Middlesex County Women’s Cup, in 1991/2. In 1995, the

reserve side were the proud winners of the new Sue Sharples

Memorial Trophy, named after the club’s founder and

secretary who tragically died suddenly on 19th April 1994

aged just 32.

The end of the 1996/7 season saw a major re-organisation of the Club and the two teams,

now containing many young players, took their respective places in Division One and

Reserve Division Three (West). At the end of that season, Tottenham Hotspur Ladies had

won the two respective leagues League titles with the first team dropping just two points

along the way. The Russell Cup also found it’s way onto the trophy shelf after a 2-1 win

over Fulham.

In 1998/9 the Club finished third in the Greater London Premier Division and were

runners-up in the League Cup. They once again finished third in the Greater London

Premier Division in season 1999/2000 whilst the following campaign saw Tottenham finish

as runners-up by one point to West Ham United.

donated to the team, following in the steps of Adidas, who had clothed them in previous

seasons. Sponsorship from Tottenham Hotspur FC, Thomson Holidays and Damage

Control plc are also of great help in the development of the club and such support

makes a big difference to the teams.

The club runs two senior sides and also a youth team along with four junior sides at

Under-12, Under-14, Under-11 and one at Under-10 for the first time starting in 2003/4.

As they have progressed off the pitch, Spurs have continued to flourish on it, reaching

the final of the Greater London Regional Women’s League Cup in 2003/4. Ultimately the

side were to progress to the third tier of female football in England at the end of the

2007/8 season, when a move into the London & South East Regional Women’s League

saw them claim the title by one point from Ebbsfleet United.

2010/11 is looking promising for Tottenham as they have claimed victory in nine of their

eleven matches to date, sitting second in the League table to Enfield Town. Indeed,

should they win their three games in hand over their fellow north London club, they will

jump above them in the table.
