Now is the time to prepare for a potential hurricane

The American Red Cross is gearingup for this year’s hurricane season.

You should, too.“Waiting until after the disaster is

the wrong time to respond,” said JoelHass, CEO of the American Red CrossMid-Florida Region. “People need tothink about what they’re going to doright now.”

He encourages local residents to beproactive in preparing for hurricanes, and offers three pieces of advice to doso.

First, Mr. Hass advises people tostock up on enough supplies to last for72 hours. With blocked roads fromfallen power lines and lasting rain andwind, sometimes it takes a long timefor help to arrive when needed.

“People need to think about howmuch food and water they are going toneed,” he said. “They need a 72-hoursurvival kit. And if they’re on medi-cine, in that survival kit needs to betheir prescriptions – enough medicine

to get themthrough 72hours.”

Secondly, Mr.Hass suggestsimportantdocuments, such as pass-ports, insurancecards andweddinglicenses, shouldbe stored in anaccessible, grab-and-go pouch.

“That way, when it’s time togo to the doctor or insurance compa-ny, all of your very essential docu-ments are ready to go,” he said.

Third, Mr. Hass recommends thatpeople develop a contact list of thoseoutside the affected area.

“If you have family in Tennessee orfriends in Atlanta, where they aren’tgoing to be affected, they need to haveyour contact info and you need tohave theirs,” he said. “Everyone in thehousehold should know that if you get

separated, those are the people youneed to call.”

Aditionally, Mr. Hass said residentsof this hurricane-prone communityshould stay informed of the currentsituation by keeping connectedthrough battery-powered radios andcell phones, which he suggestspurchasing an extra battery for.

He emphasized that readiness andpreparedness saves lives.

“At the end of the day, we thinkthere’s only 40 percent of people whoare ready for that 72 hours,” he said.“That’s a huge number who areplacing themselves in great danger.”

He said after witnessing threehurricanes, Charley, Jeanne andFrances, sweep through Florida in2004, people were calling the Ameri-can Red Cross and actively engagingin hurricane preparedness.

“Now, it’s been a while since ahurricane in Florida,” Mr. Hass said.“And I hope that people don’t forget. Itruly believe that readiness, prepared-ness and early listening saves lives.”

Local leaders recall storms that hit the Space Coast

BREVARD — While Brevard Countyhas been fortunate enough to slidethrough the past few hurricane seasonsvirtually unharmed, memories of stormdevastation still linger in the minds ofits residents.

Five hurricanes have directly affectedthe Space Coast since 1950, accordingto the National Weather Service, includ-ing David in September 1979, Erin inAugust 1995, Charley in August 2004,Frances in September 2004 and Jeannein September 2004.

While not classified as hurricaneswhen passing through Brevard, stormsFloyd in September 1999 and Irene inOctober 1999 also had an impact on thecounty, as well as Tropical Storm Fay,which dropped a record rainfall of 26.75inches in 2008.

Joel Hass, CEO of the Mid-FloridaRegion of the American Red Cross, hasmany recollections of the hurricanesthat have affected Brevard County, and,as a result, said he was quite amazed bythe resiliency of the community as awhole.

“I think it’s very important to thinkthat, especially in Central Florida, peo-ple have either moved away or come toFlorida since Charley, Frances andJean,” Mr. Hass said. “There are a largenumber of people who don’t know whathappened at that time. It was wide-spread devastation. They have no ideawhat it’s like to experience a storm thatlasts 24 or 36 hours.”

But because our area is prone to suchsevere weather and other natural disas-ters, Mr. Hass said he believes the coun-ties and cities within the mid-Floridaregion, as well as the county as a whole, are far better prepared than many otherareas of the United States.

“Neighbors help neighbors and thegovernments, along with agencies suchas the Red Cross, are quick to respond,”he said. “The ability for our communityto attract and train volunteers for suchemergencies on a long-term basisalways amazes me.”

Some of Mr. Hass’ most memorablestorm experiences occurred while heserved on the call panel at the county’semergency call center.

“Many of the calls were calls of frightand fear because they had never experi-enced anything like that,” he said.“They were afraid for their lives, and allof a sudden felt they weren’t ready for

something like this. It was a very scarysituation for many.”

As a news reporter with WESH 2News Orlando in 1987, Dan Billow hascovered nearly every hurricane to hitthe east coast of Florida since that time.

“The triple blow from HurricanesCharley, Frances and Jeanne in 2004was the most memorable hurricaneevent on the Space Coast,” Mr. Billowsaid in an email. “These three storms hitwithin about six weeks of one another.

“Charley came from the west andpounded Scottsmoor, and I rememberan elderly woman who couldn’t getpower for the oxygen system thathelped her breathe,” he said. “Francesblew and blew for two solid days andleft Cocoa Beach in sand. Jeanne hitthree weeks later and smashed homesto bits in Satellite and Melbournebeaches. The wreckage of some is stillthere.”

Aside the vivid images he recalls fromHurricanes Katrina and Andrew, Mr. Bil-low said the most memorable scene heremembers from Brevard County was ofa Melbourne Beach woman looking upat the sky through the ceiling of herwrecked home.

“She was trying to pick up the piecesof her home and was utterly over-whelmed,” he said. “I also remember aguy trying to ride a bicycle through Hur-ricane Erin in 1995. And I’ll never forgetlooking out over the Banana RiverLagoon during (Hurricane) Jeanne,

watching the blue-green flashes ofexploding electrical transformers light-ing up the entire horizon.”

For Indialantic Mayor Dave Berkman,Tropical Storm Fay is the storm thatsticks out most in his mind.

In the aftermath of the storm, herecalls his son, Brett, kayaking with afriend atop at least a foot of water, cov-ering Eighth Avenue in Indialantic.

“Luckily, we only had a few homesthat were damaged, even though justone is too many,” he said. “Since then,(our town) has become much moreproactive in putting drainage swales athomes with flooding problems, whichcan now be installed free of charge tohomeowners.”

Melbourne Beach Mayor Tom Davissaid what he remembers most from thestorms that hit Brevard was the sense ofcamaraderie that came in the after-math.

“After the back-to-back storms of2004, I was uplifted to see our residentshelping one another,” he said in anemail. “Folks who did so much to helppeople who they didn’t even know, onceagain, showed how we have pulledtogether in such difficult times. I feltvery defeated by the forces of nature, just as many of my fellow residents, butwith all the support and positive thingswe accomplished, I felt better.”

Lt. Jeff Taylor, public information offi-cer for Brevard County Fire Rescue, alsoshared his memories of the storms that

hit the Space Coast, on a professional,as well as a personal level.

Lt. Taylor was on a cruise in August2004, celebrating his honeymoon, andremembers the unsettling feeling of notbeing able to reach friends and family atthe time Hurricane Charley blewthrough Central Florida.

While both he and his wife’s parents’homes only suffered some minor dam-age, Lt. Taylor performed his first act asson-in-law on the day the couplereturned home, helping his wife’sgrandfather repair his damaged fence.

On a professional level, Lt. Taylorrecalls a wind-blown streetlight crash-ing onto his rescue vehicle during oneof the storms, as well as flooded streetsand many downed power lines andtrees.

After seeing such devastation first-hand, Lt. Taylor reminds residents toalways be prepared during hurricaneseason by stocking up on supplies early, staying up-to-date on emergencyroutes and shelters and being advised ofany alerts in their area.

“Just because it hasn’t happened inthe past few years doesn’t mean wewon’t be affected by such storms thisyear,” he said. “Early preparation is thekey to successfully riding out thesestorms.”

8 SOUTH BREVARDHOMETOWN NEWS Friday, May 25, 2012HURRICANE GUIDE

ne of the hottest topics todayin home ownership is the costof the Hazard insurance pol-icy. It is no secret that many

people are paying too much for theircoverage and know little about theirpolicy. There are many factors to con-sider with your policy that I will dis-cuss. The truth is many people onlyread their insurance policy – after aloss.

Homeowner's insurance can be verycomplex and riddled with exclusions. As Florida law changes your policyevolves. Whether its sinkhole coverage, mechanical breakdown or water back-up and sump overflow it is importantto know what is and isn’t covered. SinceHurricane season is approaching it istime to dust off that Declaration page!

So how are policy limits calculated?Dwelling coverage is typically based onthe replacement cost of the structure. This figure is not the actual marketvalue as this number changes depend-ing on market conditions. The replace-ment cost should include tangiblessuch as debris removal and interiorupgrades. When rebuilding the newestFlorida building codes also may berequired. Fire and smoke alarms, spe-cial electrical breaker, receptacles andminimal floor elevation requirementsfor the concrete slab are factors thatneed to be considered in the calcula-tions.

Another important coverage is con-tents. Knowing whether you are sched-uled for replacement cost or ActualCash Value when a claim is paid onyour personal items is very important!Don’t forget to document these itemsregularly with video. Don’t rely on yourmemory during claim time as you willbe under enough stress.

So where will you stay? Have a planfor your family and pets. Your policyshould cover your temporary livingquarters through “Loss of Use”. Alsoknowing your Liability coverage is moreimportant than ever. New changes arebeing made to Florida’s largest propertyinsurer, Citizen’s Property and Casualtyto reduce their exposure. If you have anUmbrella policy you might have a gapin liability coverage because of some ofthese changes!

There are several other ways to saveon a Homeowners insurance policy. One of the best ways is to take advan-tage of wind mitigation discounts. I

have heard many people complain thatthey had this inspection in the past.Well I am here to tell you there is a newversion of the form again effectiveFebruary 2012 and many insurers arenot accepting the older versions. Themost recent version is intended to solveissues that were problematic in olderforms. The language formerly was toovague and misinterpreted. Also thenewest version gives homeowners theadvantage to receive discounts theymay have not qualified for before. Some of the positive changes madewere how Roof geometry type is mea-sured, the number of truss strap nailsneeded and the ability to certify tileand metal roof systems.

More ways to save money is byincreasing deductibles or adjustingyour policy limits utilizing more realis-tic replacement costs. Some insurerswill allow you to decrease a coveragethat doesn’t necessarily apply to yourrisk. Again it is never smart to pay forcoverage that you don’t need. Shoppingwith other insurers can also be a goodidea especially if the company you arewith doesn’t have the “appetite” foryour type of risk. This can result in youpaying too much!

Replacing your roof if it is not 2001Florida Building Code equivalent isanother way to save money whileHurricane hardening your home.Realistically with a new roof, secondarywater resistant barrier and re-naileddecking you could potentially savethousands of dollars. If you financeyour new roof you could nearly saveenough on your insurance premiumover time to pay for the upgrades!

People don’t plan to fail they fail toplan. Start planning today. In shortthere are ways to save money. In thiseconomy it pays to be frugal andmoney smart.

Trustworthy business is worth its weight in gold

By Meagan McGonemmcgone@hometownnewso l . com

MELBOURNE - StanGoldfarb grew tired ofwitnessing individuals receiveless than they deserved whenselling their prizedpossessions.

"Quite frankly, people weregetting ripped off," said Mr.Goldfarb, who owns SquareDeal Gold Buyers with hispartner, JR Bott. "There was aneed for a trustworthy gold-buying business in the area."

So three years ago, SquareDeal Gold Buyers beganbuilding its business on trust inthe Melbourne Square Mall.

"Based on that, we'vegrown our businesstremendously," Mr. Goldfarbsaid. "All of the trust that we'vebuilt over two and a half yearshas led us to be the No. 1 goldbuyer in Brevard County."

Now it is located in theChase building adjacent to themall, in Suite 102 West of 1990W. New Haven Ave.

"Our concern is somepeople think we're out ofbusiness right now," Mr.Goldfarb said. "We are herewith the same great people andthe same service."

In its new location, SquareDeal Gold Buyers ensuressafety among its customerswith the installation of 14cameras that monitor alltransactions made, as well as asecured entrance to the officeitself.

To prevent fraud andundervaluing pieces, trainedappraisers evaluate karatpurities in front of the clientsby performing various tests.

"We talk to people abouttheir jewelry and its worth,"Mr. Goldfarb said. "We willcheck the exact karat puritiesand current spot market price. We will explain how themarket and process works, what types of equipment weuse for testing and answer anyquestions they may have."

And when it's decisiontime, Mr. Goldfarb said there is

no pressure."We do not

attempt to pressureour clients to sell, butin fact do our best toeducate our clients onthe value of theiritems so they can seewhy we offer what wedo," he said.

He said when offering cashfor a client's gold, Square DealGold Buyers can offer up to 30percent higher than other, similar businesses. On oneoccasion, he offered a woman$1,400 for a piece that she wasgoing to sell for $250 to a mail-away cash-for-gold company.

"You have some people thattry to rip people off and make aliving," he said. "Our plan is acumulative thing. We'd ratherhave many customers whocontribute a little bit each.

"We're a for-profit business, but we're local guys," He said."The money stays in Brevard. We're not mailing it away. Allour employees are fromBrevard. It's a really good

business model."For the local guys, the next

step is called Metallum, acompany that buys and sellsprecious metals, bullion, coinsand diamonds for exclusiveclientele. The business shouldopen within a couple ofmonths, Mr. Goldfarb said.

"This is a professionalatmosphere for gold buyers, and we want to expand onthat," he said.

Square Deal Gold Buyers isopen from 9:30 a.m. to 6:30p.m. Monday throughSaturday, and from 10 a.m. to 5p.m. on Sunday.

Reducing hurricane damage

Although hurricane forecasts havepredicted a less active hurricane sea-son in 2012, the Insurance Institute forBusiness & Home Safety cautions thatit only takes one storm to result in cat-astrophic damage.

“Hurricane Irene was the only stormto make U.S. landfall in 2011,” JulieRochman, IBHS president and CEOsaid, “but it caused more than $4 bil-lion in damages and caused wide-spread devastation on the East Coastall the way to Maine.”

Reducing hurricane-related proper-ty damage begins with preparation, and IBHS’ website, www.disastersafe-ty.org/hurricane, offers property own-ers detailed guidance to help themreduce the risk of property damagefrom hurricanes.

Specific resources include: Fortifiedfact sheet, roofing the right way, resi-dential hurricane brochure, residentialhurricane brochure (Spanish), IBHSshutter guide, manufactured homeinspection checklis, IBHS buildingcode ratings, IBHS Research Centervideos: “Hurricane Testing” and“Sealed Roof Deck” demo.

IBHS is a leading national expert onpreparing for, and repairing andrebuilding structures after, a catastro-phe to make them more disaster-resistant.

To arrange an interview with IBHS,contact Joseph King at (813) 675-1045or (813) 442-2845, [email protected] or visit www.Disaster-Safety.org.

IBHS is an independent, nonprofit, scientific research and communica-tions organization supported by theproperty insurance industry.

Florida Power & Light storm tips

Keep your family and home safe duringhurricane season.

At FPL, safety is a cornerstone of ourcommitment to customers and employ-ees. FPL urges Floridians to be preparedand be aware of potential electrical haz-ards at all times, especially before, duringand after a severe weather event. Beloware electricity-related tips to keep youand your family safe during hurricaneseason.

Before a storm threatens• Before storm season begins, have

your trees properly trimmed to minimizetheir potential impact on your home andneighborhood. Make sure debris iscleared prior to a hurricane warningannouncement when trash pickup is sus-pended.

• Do not attempt to trim any vegetationgrowing on or near any overhead powerlines. Only specially trained line-clearingprofessionals should work around powerlines. Check your local listings to locate acontractor qualified to trim vegetationaround power lines.

• If someone in your home is depend-ent on electric-powered, life-sustainingmedical equipment, review your familyemergency plan for back-up power ormake arrangements to relocate when astorm warning is issued.

Preparing for an approaching storm

• Before lowering a TV antenna or satel-lite dish, make sure to turn off andunplug the TV, and avoid power lines.

• Turn off all swimming pool pumpsand filters, and wrap them in waterproofmaterials.

• Turn your refrigerator and freezer totheir coldest settings ahead of time tokeep food fresh longer in the event of apower outage.

• Turn off and unplug any unnecessaryelectrical equipment.

• When working on a ladder, look upand note the location of power linesbefore you begin. Be sure that ladders orscaffolds are far enough away so that you– and the ends of the tools you’re using– don’t come within 10 feet of power lines.

Portable generator tips • Always read the manufacturer’s

instructions thoroughly to avoid danger-ous shortcuts and ensure the safe opera-tion of your generator.

• Never run generators inside yourhome or garage, as they produce poten-tially deadly carbon-monoxide fumes.

• Keep generators away from all openwindows, including neighbors’ windows,to prevent deadly exhaust from enteringa home or business.

• Buy a battery-operated carbonmonoxide alarm, which will alert you ifcarbon monoxide levels become danger-ous.

• Don’t directly connect your generatorto your home’s wiring. Power from a gen-erator connected to a home’s wiring will“back feed” into utility lines, potentiallyseverely injuring or killing a neighbor orutility crew working to restore power.

• Turn off all connected appliancesbefore starting your generator.

• Turn connected appliances on one ata time, never exceeding the generator’srated wattage.

• Don’t touch a generator if you are wetor are standing in water or on dampground.

• Never refuel a hot generator or onethat is running – hot engine parts orexhaust can ignite gasoline.

• Ensure you have plenty of gas foroperation stored safely in gascontainers.

After the storm: When is it safe?

Here are a few simple guidelines tohelp you and your family avoid injuryafter a storm passes:

• Stay away from standing water anddebris, which could potentially conceal alive wire.

• Don’t venture out in the dark becauseyou might not see a downed power linethat could be energized and dangerous.

• Watch for downed power lines. Call911 or FPL at (800) 4OUTAGE to report

fallen power lines that present a clear andimminent danger to you or others. Donot attempt to touch any electrical powerlines, and keep your family away fromthem. Always assume that every powerline is energized.

• If your roof or windows leak, water inyour walls and ceiling may come intocontact with electrical wiring. Immedi-ately turn off your circuit breakers, dis-connect all electrical appliances that arestill plugged in, and turn off all wallswitches. Remember, never stand inwater while operating switches or

Mitch Kloorfain/chief photographerEditor’s note: Don’t get complacent! While the hurricanes of 2004 didn’t leave much of a mark on the Space Coast, theydid wreak havoc on areas of the neighboring Treasure Coast and south. In this photo, you couldn’t tell where one boatends and another begins at the Fort Pierce Marina following Hurricane Frances in 2004. As longtime Florida residentsknow, vigilance and preparation are the keys to surviving the devastation nature can bring during hurricane season.

unplugging any electrical device.

FPL’s restoration prioritiesAll our effort is guided by one principle — find and fix

the damage that will safely bring power to the most peo-ple in the fewest hours.

We follow three steps, which may overlap, to accom-plish this:

First, we fix the power plants and transmission linesthat move electricity to communities.

Second, we fix main power lines that send electricityto neighborhoods. Here, we work with county emer-gency officials to restore power to the health and safetyservices that communities need first (such as hospitals, police and fire). At almost the same time, repairs beginto lines that will bring power to the most people in thefewest hours.

Third, lines serving smaller groups are fixed until wereach individuals with isolated problems, like brokentransformers. We do that last because it doesn’t help tofix the transformer until all the lines that feed power tothe transformers are repaired first.

Crews restore power as they converge on the hardesthit areas and will stay on the job until everyone haspower again.

Throughout the restoration, FPL will communicatefrequently through the news media, the FPL website(www.FPL.com), FPL’s Mobile Storm Center(mobile.FPL.com), Twitter (www.twitter.com/insideF-

PL), Facebook (www.facebook.com/FPLconnect),YouTube (www.youtube.com/FPL) and FPL’s blog(www.FPLblog.com) to provide updated restorationexpectations and other progress reports.

A storm preparation checklist from FPL

• Update the phone number and email address onyour FPL account so we can serve you faster. When youcall us, our computers recognize your phone numberand automatically match it to your FPL account.

• Keep a copy of your FPL bill with you. Having yourFPL account number handy will help us serve youquickly.

• By calling (800) 4OUTAGE and entering youraccount number, you will be able to receive informationthrough our automated system.

• Call your local emergency management office forassistance if you or anyone you know has special needsin case of evacuation.

• Emergency operations officials urge residents to pre-pare to be self-sufficient for up to 14 days. Keep a bat-tery-operated radio and a two-week supply of fresh bat-teries on hand. A battery-operated radio may be the onlyway for you to receive emergency public informationduring a disaster.

Also stock up on:• non-perishable food • medications• baby supplies• pet food• extra batteries.• Purchase bottled water. The American Red Cross rec-

ommends one gallon of water per person per day.• Check your emergency equipment and replace any

important items that aren’t working:• flashlights• battery-operated radios• extension cords• emergency generators• If your preparation plans include the operation of a

portable generator in the event of an outage, after thestorm has passed, be sure to set it up outside and con-nect appliances directly to it. Do not wire your generatordirectly to your breaker or fuse box, because the poweryou generate may flow back into power lines and causeinjuries. It’s also a good idea to have a carbon monoxidealarm inside your home. For more information, visit ourGenerator Safety web page.

• Install an approved hurricane shutter system overwindows and doors, or use alternate coverings such asplywood.

• Trim trees that are not near power lines and cleardebris. Once a hurricane warning is announced, trashpickup is suspended. For more information on our treetrimming policies, visit Trees and Power Lines.
