Brief History of Ilhabela
Author: Jean Baptiste Debret, 1827
Brief History of Ilhabela - In the seventeenth century started the sugar-cane cycle in Ilhabela and differently from most of the rest of the country, this period was mainly based on the production of “cachaça” – sugar-cane brandy, and not of sugar; - There were some 30 distilleries, and by the end of the nineteenth century, the town had almost 60 thousand inhabitants. - With the end of the cycle and of the abolition of slavery the exodus was so enormous that in 1940 Ilhabela had little more than 4 thousand inhabitants.

State Park of Ilhabela - Ilhabela State Park was established in 1977 and is one of the last untouched refuges of the Tropical Atlantic Rainforest with a preserved area of almost 275 km². In it are found trees hundreds of year’s old, rich flora and thousands of rare species in diversified fauna. So much richness made it a Natural Patrimony and Reserve of the Biosphere, a title recognized by UNESCO.
Tourism and Ilhabela - With the advent of tourism, in 1960, Ilhabela started growing once again. - Nowadays, with its touristic destiny consolidated, Ilhabela is recognized for holding important sporting events, like the “Rolex Ilhabela Sailing Week”, the largest sailing competition of all of Southern America; and the X-Terra, a world-wide phase of adventure racing. - To complete the it offers the hospitality and charm of its varied hotel network. With its high quality gastronomy, lively and musical night life, tropical climate and paradisiacal restful natural refuges.
