Camp Living Waters August 5-9 State Mandates Minutes What makes a camp successful?

◦ Structure◦ Firm Guidelines/safety◦ Parent/adult help◦ Progress, activities, fun

Page 3: BRHS Band Camp Chaperone Meeting

Page 4: BRHS Band Camp Chaperone Meeting

Daily Requirements◦ Follow Daily Schedule – keep kids on time◦ Parents Needed on Down Time and Rest time◦ Meals◦ Lights Out Rule – GO TO BED!◦ Needed most when kids are between activities

and after the last rehearsal◦ Nightly Chaperone Meetings

Page 5: BRHS Band Camp Chaperone Meeting

Staff – hired to assist in teaching students music and marching on the field and in rehearsals

Chaperone – Parents that are there to provide assistance when students are not on the field or between activities

Both staff and chaperones are to provide safety and uphold BRHS and Camp Living Waters camp rules

Staff are not nightly chaperones nor have any “parental” responsibilities

Camp Rules (BRHS) Sight Rule – Kids ALWAYS in sight State Guidelines

◦ Do not deny food/water/shelter/basic needs◦ Student is sent home after 2 warnings

We must have a Nurse on-hand at all times (Nursing license copy needed)

Day Chaperones not needed as much as night (My staff, CLW staff and teachers count during the day – perhaps one parent plus the nurse would suffice)

Need at least 1 adult per cabin at night

Page 7: BRHS Band Camp Chaperone Meeting

Observers needed (camp usually provides this)

Students must pass a basic swimming test before going out to ice berg (sometimes not always available – I’ll be sure to ask)

We’ll do this a few times at camp, usually not until Friday◦ This an optional activity dependent on student

progress/work ethic

Page 8: BRHS Band Camp Chaperone Meeting

Any rules violation needs to follow up the chain – if a rule violation gets to you, tell Mr. Todd or Mr. Balch

Severe safety violation – Tell me, wake up entire camp and bring to Jackpine Lodge

All Rules and issues need to be discussed at nightly chaperone meetings and then to Mr. Balch

Please keep me in the loop of even minor issues – these tend to blow up quickly if left unresolved.

Students must check all meds in the morning of the 5th

Not allowed to have any medication whatsoever, including Tylenol, etc.

Only exception is prescription inhalers, EPI pen and insulin pumps

Medical room/bed at campsite Do not allow kids to miss meds during the

day

As discussed with night occurrences Bell Emergency numbers in packet Health forms with Mr. Todd and Mr. Balch

Page 11: BRHS Band Camp Chaperone Meeting

There are legitimate injuries that will likely be first to occur – chronic knee/ankle, etc.

Other kids see them “sitting out”, then decide they are “injured”

It’ll may be HOT… more tempting to lay out

Dig out the root if you suspect faking Give benefit of doubt, then tell Mr.

Balch Student will likely “change their mind”

once they realize they won’t swim if they pretend to be injured

Make sure ALL kids are eating, resting, sleeping, etc.

Push water/Gatorade Push sunscreen Push deodorant Watch for burns, loss of color, excessive

No one may bring any snacks containing peanuts or peanut butter due to allergies

Page 14: BRHS Band Camp Chaperone Meeting

Watch for loners◦ Section leaders are told to help with this

With whiners – talk to them, they are likely homesick

Probably too busy and tired to sit around and sulk

Page 15: BRHS Band Camp Chaperone Meeting
